  3. FIRST POST ON THE KILL THREAD! Saturday morning was hunting at my aunt's property in Rome for the early season. Saw 5 does in the morning and almost got a shot at one but it was a little to thick so I passed on it. About 8 I left the corn field I was sitting next to for a little still hunting. I started walking down an old logging road on the property trying to walk up on something possibly bedded in the beach trees. Got about 150 yards into the woods from my aunt's hay field and saw a black squirrel which I was very tempted to shoot (and almost did!) Thought it through though, didn't want to use up a rage and possibly break an arrow. Well its after 930 now and I had stuff to do with my nephew and girlfriend so I turned around to work my way back to the car. Didn't even take a step and I see a deer walking from my left to righ crossing the logging road I was standing right in the middle on. I could see it was a buck but he was about 80 yards out so I just watched and couldn't believe he was just going to walk right by me. Well he turned towards me and took a few steps then stopped. Then took a couple steps to the right and stopped again. He was teasing me! He finally turned back towards me and was coming right to me! About 40 yards out he got behind a big tree so I quickly and quietly took three or four steps forward and got into a position for a shot. He stepped out from behind the tree slightly quartering away, I drew, stopped him and let it fly! Watched the Nokternal laser right into his ribs. a little back but with the angel still a good shot. I got my composure and texted my girlfriend to tell her plans were going to have to push back a couple hours. I waited maybe ten-fifteen minutes and then looked for my arrow and blood. Found good red blood right from the shot so I got on the trail. about 60 yards into it I found my arrow feet from a stand my father and I built years ago. About another 100-150 yards I found him in a cedar swap dead! Apparently I wasn't the first one to find him....damn coyotes already started to open him up where my arrow went in. luckily no meat was lost. He was my best bow buck so far! Good mass at the bases, good brows and the best part...the hunt itself less than an hour from shot to finding him 0945-1040

  5. Going out, but don't have any expectations of killing a deer. Mainly, doing it to relax, enjoy the view, and to celebrate the season kick-off. Would rather hold off on filling any doe tags, until it's cooler, and I don't need to feel so "rushed" to get one cut up and in the freezer. (No electricity at camp, butcher myself, and would prefer to leave it hang a day or so.) I was on the fence about whether to take the opener off or not. I was out at camp yesterday doing some last minute jobs and it was absolutely beautiful with fall colors and relaxing! It was a still afternoon, birds were chirping, and it was very relaxing just watching the leaves falling, hearing them ticking off other leaves on their way down, as they slowly drifted to the ground. Made up my mind. that mentally, I need a day off to de-stress and unwind, and I know just the place to do it! Taking 3 days vacation off every week from Oct. 1st - Dec. 1st. (Can probably get use to working 2 days/wk! LOL) Plus, camp is right on my way home, so even if I do work, I get out early enough that I can hunt every afternoon/evening if I wanted to. Good luck, but most of all, BE SAFE everyone! Do yourself, your family, and friends a favor and PLEASE USE THOSE SAFETY HARNESSES!!!!

  11. Last spring I stopped in to a local flea market that I have been going to for a few years now. I have gotten to know this one vender, well enough to say hello and shoot the bull for a minute or two. This trip the vender had some hunting items for sale. Two tree stands, some knives fanny packs etc….I picked out a decent box call. Then the vender starts on me. She says "don't tell me you hunt" "You seem like such a nice guy" She starts rolling her eyes and shaking her head in disapproval. I ask her why she is selling hunting equipment if she is so against hunting. Her only reply was that SHE doesn't use the stuff to kill animals. We went back and forth, but it was civil. She doesn't talk to me as much anymore, but when I stop in, I make it a point to always ask her if she has any hunting gear for sale. LOL!! She just grins...

  14. I had a cool experience this morning. I was walking out of the wood, with my climber, back pack, and gun. When I looked up the hill, and to my surprise stood two game wardens. They got a little chuckle watching me coming up the hill with all my gear, as I said give me a minute I'll be right there. First thing I did was remove the primer from my muzzleloader, when I realized they were there, and I was approaching them. Shows respect, and safety to the warden to make sure they understand everything is safe. So I finally made it up the hill out of breath, and sweating like I had just played a football game. I know these two guys got a kick out of watching this action. After the gentleman checked my licenses, we proceeded to have about a half hour conversation about DeerLogic. I was showing them data that was logged in the area, and they were most impressed when I showed them 3 hunt group members in other areas hunting. I'll tell you what these guys were pretty cool. I hear so much negetivity about wardens. But personally I have never had a bad experience with a warden. These people are the ones that are out there protecting us, and our wildlife. I will say that most people that look down on our wardens, are more than likely the ones breaking the law. Keep your nose clean and follow the law, and everyone can have a great relationship with their local wardens. We at DeerLogic have the up most respect for these men and women, and thank you for all you do for our great sport of hunting. Anyone else have a cool warden story??

  15. I see a few young bucks but what do you say is the age of the "older" lad, maybe 3 1/2? He is nice and wide past the ears but looks pretty young. And yes if he presents a shot,it wont matter anyway.I'm seeing way more buck than doe this year which bothers me.

  16. I always figure with aa accurate rifle/good optics it removes a variable from the hunt.(And poor shooting puts the blame squarely on me!) That said some good practice time probably accounts for more than itty bitty groups. Good luck on the hunt!

  20. I think we're on the same page. But for what it's worth, as a salary person I'm paid to do a job. If said job takes 50 hours a week or 38, i'm compenstated the same. If it takes 38, perhaps i can take on some more responsibility and earn a promotion. And maybe it only takes 38 because of my skill. To your point, yes promotions come with performance. But within performance is the ability to take on more. A smart man knows when he must push back. A smart man knows when the additional work wont get him anymore. There is no black and white answer to any of this, but simply... a person has to pick his own path. Hard work will generally always pay off. Doing your best everyday will almost always pay off. But refusing to work a little harder, go above and beyond or to do the right thing because you don't feel compensated for it? That will never get you to the next level. And these are the employees who i would rather not work for me. You will not just get promoted for giggles. You need to earn it.

  25. 12 plus a pop up and for gun a portable seat blind...he did say I could use the enclosed ones for they are only and 8ft climb up so those two........I didn't tell him I'm still working on the 12 ft platform for another blind...Ya know 12ft is taller than I realized. ..lol I stopped at a nearby neighbor to ask permission to park the gator in her barn yard...then walk back on level road to our property...We own on two roads ..the other road is 2600+ ft down the hill and then 1600 ft to where I can enter I normally walk to it...this will allow me to drive to with in 300ft park the gator in a safe area then go hunt. I'm actually hoping I can talk the surgeon into a knee brace now....Or maybe get lucky and have the big boy stop out tomorrow...I did win the wishbone pull the other night...

  27. went down to camp this weekend and pulled my cards for the first time. I was hoping the 160"+ 12 point i have been after for 3 years survived (posted pictures last year), but it looks like it is on to other deer this year. This is so far my #1. The one on the RIGHT! The one on the left needs another year or 2. He is about a 140" 9 point.

  31. Omg 140" 8s are not rare or unheard of. Many hit the ground no one even hears about. Just talked with a guy who shot 2 last season one bow 1 gun kill. One was low 40s other mid. Saw pics with date and we share mutual friends. Guys think it's near impossible for an 8 to score that high. It happens people. ..

  35. I'd probably laugh at you Grow if it hadn't happened to me too. No drag rags, just an accidental spillage of deer piss on my hunting duds the day before while filling my scent canisters.. The next day on my hike in, I had a little 3pt that decided we were going to have a "bull fight" before the sun came up when I spotted his glowing eyes in my headlamp at a scrape near my blind, lol I'm pretty sure it was buck piss if memory serves me correct. We both got a little bloody from that pre dawn encounter, but fortunately neither of us were seriously injured.

  37. Nice pictures, Larry !! I love hunting geese and I haven't even got my stamp yet..Go figure.. I'll start watching for feeding fields for the next season. In the places I hunt I often get some duck shooting too. I love to shoot geese, but I prefer to EAT ducks.. I have two dozen shells and access to two dozen more.. (hint, hint).. You'll have to take someone along who can shoot next time so poor Jenny will have more birds to fetch.. <<grin>>....

  39. Grow hit it on the head. Required "sweat equity" can open a whole host of issues. Payment does not have to be money and with "consideration" you lose this protection. New York Consolidated Laws GENERAL OBLIGATIONS LAW ARTICLE 9: Obligations of Care TITLE 1: Conditions on Real Property § 9-103. No duty to keep premises safe for certain uses; responsibility for acts of such users 1. Except as provided in subdivision two, a. an owner, lessee or occupant of premises, whether or not posted as provided in section 11-2111 of the environmental conservation law, owes no duty to keep the premises safe for entry or use by others for hunting, fishing, organized gleaning as defined in section seventy- one-y of the agriculture and markets law, canoeing, boating, trapping, hiking, cross-country skiing, tobogganing, sledding, speleological activities, horseback riding, bicycle riding, hand gliding, motorized vehicle operation for recreational purposes, snowmobile operation, cutting or gathering of wood for non-commercial purposes or training of dogs, or to give warning of any hazardous condition or use of or structure or activity on such premises to persons entering for such purposes; b. an owner, lessee or occupant of premises who gives permission to another to pursue any such activities upon such premises does not thereby (1) extend any assurance that the premises are safe for such purpose, or (2) constitute the person to whom permission is granted an invitee to whom a duty of care is owed, or (3) assume responsibility for or incur liability for any injury to person or property caused by any act of persons to whom the permission is granted. c. an owner, lessee or occupant of a farm, as defined in section six hundred seventy-one of the labor law, whether or not posted as provided in section 11-2111 of the environmental conservation law, owes no duty to keep such farm safe for entry or use by a person who enters or remains in or upon such farm without consent or privilege, or to give warning of any hazardous condition or use of or structure or activity on such farm to persons so entering or remaining. This shall not be interpreted, or construed, as a limit on liability for acts of gross negligence in addition to those other acts referred to in subdivision two of this section. 2. This section does not limit the liability which would otherwise exist a. for willful or malicious failure to guard, or to warn against, a dangerous condition, use, structure or activity; or b. for injury suffered in any case where permission to pursue any of the activities enumerated in this section was granted for a consideration other than the consideration, if any, paid to said landowner by the state or federal government, or permission to train dogs was granted for a consideration other than that provided for in section 11- 0925 of the environmental conservation law; or c. for injury caused, by acts of persons to whom permission to pursue any of the activities enumerated in this section was granted, to other persons as to whom the person granting permission, or the owner, lessee or occupant of the premises, owed a duty to keep the premises safe or to warn of danger. 3. Nothing in this section creates a duty of care or ground of liability for injury to person or property.

  43. Calling for 70* here... which should keep deer patterns right on track with what the rest of the summer has been like weather wise to this point. Just planning a couple prime time sits in the mornings and evenings early on. I ain't gonna sweat it. Better days to come no doubt, but I wouldn't miss the opener for the world. Seeing plenty of late afternoon activity around a few of my stands, so keeping my fingers crossed for an opportunity at a shooter no mater what.

  45. I hunted yesterday morning. I missed on the setup as the wind was nil..........I should have remembered that when it is dead calm, they will usually come in from the north east due to the south west prevailing wind. (at least in my experience) The first group came in just outside of shooting range and totaled about 25 birds.........damn. They landed and hung around for a few minutes before Wonder Dog sent them packing. I gave her the green light as I figured any other birds would just land there and present no shot. They flew off and about 10 minutes later about a dozen came in. Bam, bam and bam........nothing. Nice shooting stud. WTH, I was excited. The next group came 10-15 minutes later and to be honest I don't recall how many were in that group. One fell to my second shot. (the first shot was just a warning shot. ) At that point I grabbed a couple more shells and found I had been using my 3" BB and in my bucket I had some 3.5" BB loads. I know, I know.......who needs 3.5" loads ?? Well I emptied the chamber and magazine and reloaded with the Roman Candles!! At least that was the plan!! I moved a bit further down the hedge row to the north to see if I could get a better angle as they came in and it worked. A pair came in and gave me the PERFECT shot opportunity; I pulled up as they were just about to touch down and CLICK. SOB what they frig??? Oh yea, when you reload the gun you should toss one into the chamber too. UGGH! They flared and were never seen again. Word got out to the rest of the resident birds and no more came in. All I saw after that were a couple very distant flocks of geese, some mosquitoes and a ship load of doves. All in all it was another great day to be alive. The weather was stellar and we had a great time Miss Jenny and I. I'll see if I can get a pic or two up from my phone.

  46. When I was a young lad I shot 8 months out of the year. now I pick up my bow about a month before and shoot maybe once a week. for me it doesn't matter how much I practice..results are the same....center ring. I know some guys who are awesome at practice but not so much while hunting. Many other factors than muscle memory etc comes into play while hunting.

  47. I've trained myself to always draw with my trigger finger behind the trigger, actually pushing the trigger forward. Having shot with my fingers for many, many years, I found it almost impossible to retrain my brain to keep my finger from occasionally putting pressure on the trigger of a mechanical release during the draw. Even the release-to-fire setup didn't work for me, but I haven't had an inadvertent release since. It acts like a safety: my finger doesn't move to the 'active' position 'til I'm ready to shoot. One less thing to think about when the adrenaline is going.
