  1. 9 point I took on state land in southern 9P on 10/16. Sitting in the middle of a bunch of oaks, he came out with two minutes left before sunset. Saw a total of 8 deer and a bear that day. First bear I've seen with my own eyes, awesome night. Barred owls talking like crazy as the day came to a close. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  2. I think that was a "word malfunction". Belo probably meant to say SMALL bucks. I remember having a "word malfunction" once. I meant to say to my wife " Pass the Cheerios, Honey"... Instead I said " You've ruined my LIFE, you F*****G B***H..!! "

  5. Killed an 8pt buck tonight. I'm going to be crippled up as I had a long uphill drag and I swore I'd never drag another. He's probably a 2.5 year old I'm guessing. I'll pull the lower jaw and see what the DEC has to say about it. One of the biggest bucks weight wise I've ever killed, actually the third heavyset I think, he dressed out at 172 lbs. The drag was about 200 yards. I took this pic as soon as I found him, no hero shots in the field. I'll grab some pics for the contest tomorrow.

  7. Yes, getting a little of the blood lust out early on makes it easier to let one like that walk.. Just to make it clear- this is definitely the biggest buck I ever let walk and he would been my third biggest by bow if I'd taken the shot, but at the same time I feel accomplished knowing I could've had him but let him go. As close to 'catch and release' as you'll ever get with hunting. I'm also finding that killing one is becoming a little less important to the quality of my hunt as it used to be.

  8. We have had a lease agreement with C&H for I would guess 15 years now. The communication with Bob has been very very good. During this time it has been logged off once just recently. Bob made contact way before this process took place, any concerns we had were addressed, the loggers did a really clean respectable job, there was zero damage to any of our trees stands. With Bobs approval we have even put in some food plots, he called us when the logging was done just to tell us we were more than welcome to seed the logging trails also and he even had the loggers leave a few extra logs near our camp to cut up for firewood for the deer season. We could not be happier with our lease.

  11. If this guy says he takes 200yd shots at a deer, with buckshot, then I would consider him to be irresponsible, or full of s#!t at best. Most people wouldn't try a 200+ yard shot with a slug.

  12. I have been shooting firearms at paper for several years and this year I decided to take my hunter safety courses and pick up a bow since that is all that is allowed to hunt with here on Long Isand. I joined Suffolk Archers and have been fortunate to have had some great coaching from some of the members there. I have never hunted before this season. I have spent some time scouting and lots of time reading and studying. After about five to ten sessions of ground hunting in Greenport, I harvested a small buck from a tree stand less than 1/2 hour from using it for the first time. Needless to say, I am eager to continue learning as much as I can.

  15. I think what happened is that the guy shot at a deer at 200 yards with buckshot and saw it go down and die. Problem is, the deer was actually shot and killed by somebody else with a rifle.

  16. I'd really like to see some ballistic charts showing how much penetration you'd get at 200 yards with buckshot? Maybe one of the pellets flew into the bucks mouth and there was no one around to give him the heimlich maneuver and he choked to death?? LOL

  18. Last night turned out to be a bad day for deer but a far worse day for turkeys Shot entered from roughly 30 yards just behind armpit area and exited through the throat. No meat damaged. Not my ideal shot but a dead bird nonetheless and some fabulous dinner ahead for me and my poultrytarian girlfriend. One turkey down, at least 14 more left and one more with my name on it for this season! Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk

  20. To begin, let me apologize for my ignorance in posting pictures.. However, today's pull from my trailcam is worth talking about. It has been about a 10 days since I've checked it, and I think I have the greatest variety of wildlife that I have ever had in such a short time.. I have numerous deer ( does and 3 or 4 bucks) 8 or 10 turkeys, a grey fox, NUMEROUS coons, a porcupine, a possum, a bear and two coyotes( both coyotes in the same frame). About the only thing missing that I have had in the past is a bobcat, and perhaps WOOLY in his shorts... There is a scrape in the view, and I have pictures of several bucks and a couple of does working the licking branch. Cool stuff.

  21. All those critters must have come through after I freshened your scrape with my special "Wild and Wooly Sauce",lol. Make sure you wash your hands...... I chased the bobcat away after he lost the pissing match over territory, and we may have got a little overspray on your cam. Let me know if you need help loading the pics and I'll see if I can get one of these guys to help you out!

  22. I'm always a lot more concerned with the widow-makers overhead being dislodged and taking me out. I don't cut firewood in heavy winds for this reason. Riding that tree in your photo to the ground probably wouldn't kill you, but I'm not going to put the experience on my bucket list.

  25. I grew up hunting with buckshot, it's all my father ever used. Beyond 30 yards, it's not that effective. A body shot is an iffy proposition, it doesn't pass through or leave much of a blood trail, if any, and many deer limp off to die a slow death. I've had more success taking head/neck shots with it, but I switched over to slugs quite some time ago. 200 yards? Doubtful...

  26. I hunted deer in NJ for decades in my youth. When I started hunting, buckshot was the only thing that was legal. We fought the state for many years to legalize slugs. Many hunting clubs in NJ used 00 Buck for years, especially in thick areas and where deer drives were the norm. It was traditional, and traditions die hard. I have seen deer killed at 75 yards with buckshot fired from a 10 gauge, which many hunters used then. A SxS with buckshot was not an uncommon sight in the NJ woods in the 1960's and 70's. But I know of a few guys that hunted deer with 3 1/2" buckshot in 12 gauge as well. Many prefer 0 Buck to anything bigger because it has more pellets in it and tends to pattern better. Patterning is paramount with buckshot. Many guys think a full choke is the way to go with buckshot, but more often than not, the pattern will look like a donut, with a big hole in the center, just where the vitals on a deer are. That's why many deer shot at with buckshot are only wounded. No pellets hit anything vital. They just hit muscle and intestines. It only takes one pellet in the head or heart to kill a deer though, and it's possible one could hit a deer just right at 200 yards, but I'd have to see it to believe it. If one takes the time to pattern a shotgun for buckshot, it is possible to get very good patterns, with good pellet counts, out to 75 yards. My Mossberg 835 patterned very well to 75 yards with 3 1/2" 0 Buck using a Modified choke. A friend got good patterns at 75 using the same load with a Cylinder choke. Buckshot has real advantages when shooting at running deer, especially at 50 yards or less, when the gun throws a good pattern. It works OK in brushy areas too, because a couple of pellets will usually get through. I feel it has it's uses and it can be very effective if used properly. I see no reason for it to be illegal, especially in shotgun only areas. BTW, it's still legal in NJ. But if given the choice, I prefer an accurate rifle, or even an accurate slug gun, that I can use to shoot one shot at a standing buck and close the deal.

  30. Look at the bright side, they tried something that the antis have been pumping for years, and proved that it doesnt have the desired effect. Maybe the results will become more well known, and it can be used to show the antis how much of a farce their idea is. Could be a win for us hunters.

  31. I butchered a deer yesterday solo and spent hours grinding, wrapping then canning 7 quart of venison. It wouldn't have been too bad but around 3:30 my wife was called into work and I had to get dinner together for the kids & I: breaded pork chops, mashed potatoes (when I mashed them I worked in a wad of crumbly blue cheese and light sour cream!!) and a butternut squash. Then toss in all the cleaning of knives, cutting boards, grinder parts, pans, dinner dishes then the canning jars, lids, canner etc and my arse was wupped. No chef but I do enjoy my cooking!

  39. Not a fan of the "brown it's down" saying myself either. I prefer the old saying....., "they're all pink on the inside"! Pretty sure that phrase was coined by an old upstate deer hunter who spent too much time alone in the woods and didn't get lucky often, lol

  40. I didn't weigh him... he wasn't that big.. maybe 160-165... I believe he is at least 3 1/2... but he just doesn't have that "old buck" body... a very handsome specimen of an ADK buck just not an ADK slob buck... but I'm very happy.. especially as the smoke pole patch & roundball... it was a great hunt.

  42. Cabelas Wooltimate outerwear. It's mostly fleece with a bit of wool mixed in for warmth. Underneath it's Under Armour cold gear underwear. If it's super cold out I add a 100% polyester fleece shirt. Gloves are wool and hat is fleece. Wool socks and Muck boots top it off. Remember, cotton kills

  46. Using an Aimpoint 9000sc on a Savage 220 (20 ga.) Shoots crazy good. Also run a Aimpoint H1 on a 8x57 and sometimes swap it to the 270Win, good performance in a tiny package for low light or dark targets.

  48. I've been hunting with 1.25 to 1.5 pound triggers for 10 years or so. Ever since I got the Weatherby SubMOA. Those are factory set at 1.5 pounds. Never had an issue. Safety is on until the rifle is shouldered. As far as a snag goes you can have a 5 pound pull, just the weight rifle pulling on a snag is more than that. By that logic we should be hunting with 8 pound triggers. It's 1 1/4 not a set trigger at .33 pound.
