  1. Here are some knives I put together as groomsman gifts for my brothers and friend. The blades are Western USA L66 blanks that I found on ebay. I crafted the handles myself and fitted/finished the sheaths as well. The acid etching was a fun process; battery charger on 200 amps, a little finger nail polish, a q-tip, and some heavy duty acid... The next step will be to make the blades by hand as well, but this was a fun intro into knife making. This is what they looked like before I started: The top one is an original L66 that has seen years of use. The next one down is the 1st one I made using antler and mahogany. There are some mistakes (2 different antlers used, so 2 different colors, etc.), so I kept this one for myself. The bottom one was the 2nd one I put together. I used antler and buckthorn. The buckthorn is an interesting wood to work with, but doesn't contrast as nicely with the antler. The one that is 2nd from bottom was the 4th one I put together. I'm not normally a big fan of handles made out of one piece of antler, but the piece I used was pretty straight, so I gave it a go. This was the 3rd one I did, using antler and Ipe, a very dense South American wood. I like the contrast a lot. This particular antler was one my younger brother found when he was 10 years old or so. I regrettably broke tines off it using it for rattling, so I used what was left of it for my brother's knife. I figured it was the least I could do.. Not a really good picture of one of the sheaths, but high quality full-grain cowhide. It's a process to get them fitted properly to the knife, but well worth it. It was tempting to get carried away with the acid etching... I ended up putting a silhouette image on each side of the knives. My best man is a bird hunter first and foremost and he always has a pointer riding shotgun, so this was what I did for him: Some of the other etchings:

  4. Everybody worries about how long our gun season is. From what shooting I have heard in recent years, anytime after opening weekend is only sporadically used anyway. I think there comes a time when you could add a couple weeks onto the gun season and still not impact he take significantly. I am beginning to think that most hunters completely lose interest after opening day. Even Thanksgiving day is just a shell of what it used to be. I wouldn't get too concerned about the length of NYS's gun season. I don't think it makes a bit of difference one way or the other.

  5. Well after some consideration I decided that rather than spending the money on a camera arm I am gonna make my own with stuff I have laying around... Here's what I ended up with Sent from my Galaxy S4 using Tapatalk 2 (Not sure why the one image is posted twice....)

  6. Made offer last year, but no takers. It doesn't get used any longer since I have more toys. I have an older CVA Wolf that I no longer use. It's not the prettiest thing in the world since it's had a fair amount of days in the field, but it'll still shoot and good starter mz. Can include a scope. Would like to be in the Rochester area so I can meet w/Parent etc.

  8. I get a laugh from the different ways the weather people describe the snow in their broadcasts......"crippling, pounded, devastating, unrelenting, blinding etc. etc. etc." Helps to spread the paranoia.

  9. The so called "blizzard" has turned out to be a bust. Hardly any real accumulation anywhere they said we would get clobbered. Seems to me these news people and weather people like to stir up panic at minor events these days.

  10. I think you have to look at traditional archery much like any other sport that doesn't rely on gadgets to help you get it done...I know great golfers, ball players, dart players, who 9 out of 10 ten times are on their game...then there is that one day when they can't get anything right, same goes with traditional archery....only difference is there is a living creature at the other end when you screw up...my brother went to the recurve a few years back and is 4 for 4, but there are days at the range that are just plain terrible.

  11. Take 1-2lbs Chopped Venison I add a little pork fat when gridding. Take the chop meat mix in Onion soup dry packet and 1 egg, Mix it together Make patties I like big 1/4lb put on wax paper let sit for about 1hr before cooking. I like BQ put tastes just as good in frying pan, you can add cheese. The best tasting burger you ever had, you will never scape meat again.

  13. Let me know how the Henry shoots.. I really like the rifle, except I am not too crazy about the way it is loaded...Seems like a regular side loading gate would be more convenient than the rimfire type loading port on the magazine tube.

  14. Bought a Marlin 336 SS in 30-30 when rifle opened up in WNY. Took a doe with it fist time out. I prefer the lever to bolt action due to being left handed.

  20. Once I do my zero check before season, I do not touch a cleaning rod unless I get caught in signifiacant rain. Even then, I just run a dry patch through the bore to remove any moisture. A perfectly clean and/or oily bore can & usually does shoot to a different POI than a fouled bore. Since I routinely make shots between 200 & 250 yds, this can change POI several inches @ those ranges. After the season, I thoroughly clean the bore as described in the post above & run an oily patch through before storage.. While a "bore snake" can adequately clean a smooth bore shotgun barrel, it is woefully inadequate for a rifle except for a quick wipe. It needs to be followed up by @ least an oily patch. Eventually, copper will build up & need to be removed to keep pin point accuracy.

  24. I read NY Outdoor News as one way to keep up on whats occurring. HOWEVER, I find them extremely biased in their "reporting". They often don't objectively report news, rather they add their spin and slant articles to one side often. I've sent letters to the editor who admits they write and report on many stories according to their personal opinion (and I'm speaking outside of the editorial section). As for the survey, if they offered a six pack of bud light to be allowed as you hunt, I'm sure most of the "no change" votes would be swayed.... our "majority" is less than impressive.

  25. Frankly I don't give a damn what hunters are thinking. All I want right now is for the DEC to be working on perfecting their methodology for controlling deer populations relative to localized habitat. I don't want them wasting one more minute or dollar worrying about how to get older deer, or bigger racks, or any of that meaningless crap. I don't think that anyone including the most deluded DEC employee believes that they have maximized deer population control (which is their prime directive), and here we are running around talking about NYS becoming a trophy state, and whining about 1-1/2 year old bucks being taken. Somehow we have to get our priorities straightened out. So they can run all the polls they want, whether it is some supposed wonderful Cornell scientific poll/survey or some newspaper running a just-for-fun poll. It all means nothing as long as they still cannot perform the most basic management function....population control. Get the fundamentals perfected, and then maybe it's time to worry about adding a few bells and whistles. Hunters are not the management agency that we pay the big dollars for, and since when do we rely on hunters as being the college trained biologists that should be running the DEC. Who the hell is running the show anyway? I hate to see our taxes and fee money going to an agency that relies solely on polling hunters to determine wildlife management and what directions that management should be heading. How about they make their own decisions for a change based on what they were taught when they got their degrees in their fields of expertise. That's what we pay them for.

  26. I can"t imagine that any responses to any random survey or poll, regardless of the source, are anything other than the personal opinion of those responding.........I can't imagine the majority of people apply any scientific thought other than what they want...now if you're telling me these random selections really aren't random, but more a selection of people they specifically want responding to the survey then I get it........and I understand that they break them down by region, wmu, age..etc. But, my main point was, that the info they get back can't certainly be looked at anything other than personal opinion can it?
