  3. I am from the same place a ncountry. This did take place on 37 in the area he said. That being said, I know this young lady. she has an associates degree in criminal justice and graduated Saturday with a bachelors in police administration or something like that. She failed the physical part of the test for the border patrol 2 weeks ago. She is a distant friend of my daughters. She has been fired from at least three jobs for her attitude. She went there looking for a fight with her chip on her shoulder. She now may be facing federal charges for a few things. She wanted her 15 minutes of fame and has gotten it. Now it will cost her dearly in the end. Check out her facebook page if you want to see the real her.

  5. A 6 foot medium action spinning rod is a good all around rod. Get a decent quality reel (the guy in the fishing Dept. SHOULD be able to help you choose one) spool it with 8lb. line. Lures all depend on what you're going for, but different sized Rapalas and spinners are a good bet. Other than that,, worms, minnows and good old bobbers.

  6. After the winter that we had it is very surprising that the birds are weighing in so high this spring. We have killed 4 longbeards in the family so far (all two year olds)and currently the lightest is mine at 19.5. The other three went 22, 22.75 and a 23.5 pounder that my cousin shot today. This bird breaks the record for the heaviest in the family. The old record was 23# that my dad killed 20 years ago and that is out of approx. 150 adult toms over the years...

  7. I killed another adult this morning at 9:30am. I had one on the roast in a precarious position, not easily approachable from the side I thought he'd pitch into. Went to the less desirable spot and sure enough he hit the ground after all my best sexy calls, gobbling his fool head off and headed towards a road. Then I heard another bird flap out of the tree and start making some yelps.....damn, a hen. Off they went, ignoring everything I had. The heck with them, I went south and mooched around for a bit. Took a nice 30 minute nap, called my wife and buddy then started to the east. After about 400-500 yards of walking and calling I stopped to make another call and got an answer! It's around 9;15 and he is close! Maybe 125 yards away but in a field by the sounds of it. He gobbled his head off too and it took about 10 minutes for him to make it within range. One shot at about 35 yards and his partying days are over. I hope he left his seed......................... He was a pretty good bird; 21lbs, 10" beard and 1" spurs. Man it was a warm morning and FOGGY early. I have a couple buddies I may take out now but I'm looking forward to some more springtime pan fish!!

  8. Man one of the best days I have had in the woods to date!!! It all started at 4am this morning when my friend charlie meet me at my house to head to my property. We got out there and go set up on either side of the ridge. When the woods started to wake up we had gobbles all around us from 100 yards to 400 yards. After about 15 mins I heard a bunch start flying down .I was facing the north and had a swamp to my west that isnt really deep but they dont like to cross it.The other side was 85 yards and deosnt the Tom strut right past on that side to use the high spot right behind me.I couldnt move or he would have saw me and if he went about another 100 yards he would walk into the barrel of my friends shotgun.Well I am totally expecting to here BOOM when I hear spitting and drumming right behind me at 10 yards!!! He strutted back and fourth for 20 mins while my friend was watchin and thinking WTF is he doing shoot already. He went down towards the swamp shere my friend couldnt see him and the damn bird does the same damn thing to him that he did to me only at 20 yards behind some small pine trees. After the tom left we regrouped on another tom that had hens in the field,we set up on them and the tom answered my calls by cutting me off for a half hour np tmoving other than strutting back and fourth on a hill in the field dancing for his harem.I decided to make a move to the north to a logging road that they usually go through later in the afternoons so I thought its worth a try at 8 am.We got set up and I started calling and immidiatly had him answer along with another tom to the east. After 5 mins I knew the tom to the west was coming in.I couldnt let out one sound without him cutting me off so I stopped calling.Thats when I saw him strutting through the woods at 100 yards coming towards us in a "S" formation. He was heading right towards me till he got to a few downed tree so he turned north to go around them.BIG MISTAKE!!! My friend dropped him at 45 yards.1 inch spurs 22 pounds and a 10 inch beard So when I start giving high fives and congrats to my friend he says hey look what I sat on when we came here!!! Then I get a call from my friend that he killed his first bird.Did it all by himself also.20 pounds 3/4 spurs and a 8 1/2 inch beard Heres a pic of both hunters So his wife yelled at him not to get the new car all bloody,he had to drive home like this!!LOL

  12. Need a few more details. Fish species you may go after, in a boat, from the shore, etc.? I have spent a lot of time fishing, no clue if it is done the way It is supposed to be done , but I catch fish and have fun

  13. You hear the old timers tell tales about being able to walk across the rivers on the backs of spawning fish...Now, thanks to a great restocking program it may be possible again..Lol The DEC is posted in this spot 24 hrs a day for the peak of this run to prevent some of our local outlaws from ruining it.

  14. Obviously deer management is not as delicate a science as some may believe. We always describe it all in terms of perfection, but there is an awful lot of resilience to deer as a species. Management failures on our part as humans will be handled to a certain extent simply by the forces of nature and the resourceful features of the deer species themselves. That's not to say that gross mismanagement and harvest goals never have catastrophic consequences, but there is a whole lot of leeway before serious permanent damage is done. And so, in general, I would have to say that NYS seems to do a passable job of management. No, we don't have trophy deer behind every tree, and there are no guarantees to hunters, and there are highs and lows and cyclical swings, and the herd never lives up to our expectations of perfection. But, on a macro level, and given the fact that resources are finite, and in spite of the constant whining and occasional disappointments, perhaps the job really is being done to the best that all the practicalities of reality allow. Of course that will not stop me from whining and complaining, but sometimes it is useful to sit back and look at the realities of what is really happening in the world of deer management.

  16. Some WMUs are too big. However, managing on a micro level - smaller then the home range of a deer is a fool's errand. I have 2 large properties within a mile that allow no hunting at all. How do you manage that? Even if you can manage your local herd, what metrics do you use? Do you judge the population on how many deer you see or kill? How much sign? The only meaningful metric for determining whether there are too many deer is the quality of native vegetation. Are invasives being favored because deer are suppressing natives? Are you seeing barberry, buckthorn, bush honeysuckle increasing? If you have oaks, are they regenerating? Do you know the scores of plant species on your property - or those that should be but are missing? Yes, do you own management but make sure you educate yourself first.

  17. I've got an engineer mind so I've really only read one, but I've got no complaints. Strategies For Whitetails by Charlie Alsheimer. seemed like it had lots of useful factual info. Haven't read more of a story with heart, sole, and emotion kind of deer hunting book.

  21. It was pretty obvious to me what she was trying to do. Just a rotten little snot trying to provoke and catch something on her little spy cam, which she conveniently didn't have running during the initial stop. She got exactly what she wanted…her little burst of fame. It worked. So don't feel sorry for her.

  22. I've been out 7 times already and have only heard gobbling from the roost. once they fly down, it's been silent. been seeing hens but none of them have made a peep or had boys with them. saw 2 jakes strutting on the 3rd and no bearded birds since, except for in the roost. tried to get close to them before fly down and they were gobbling their heads of but they flew down to the neighbor's field on the other side of the creek and had no interest in my calling. definitely my most frustrating season yet.

  23. Get an ugly stick medium to medium heavy. Very durable for a beginner, 8-10 lb casting line should be good. Get a reel with a METAL handle.
    1 point
  24. Yes, a 6- 6.5' medium action pole with 8-10# test has served me we well for just about everything..Personally I have always preferred the longer rod to facilitate a longer cast. Maybe an ultra light pole for going after crappie, panfish, and trout. Now a days I do most of my fishing out of a boat on small lakes and rivers. if I could only have 3 lures it would be a 5" salt impregnated senco type worm, white spinner bait, and a 3" black curly tailed jig. If I could only have one it probably would be the white spinner bait. Or a hook and use live bait for the foolproof method.

  25. Even if less permits were issued, the overwintered population of survivors might not necessarily be much larger. Instead of hunters taking them, more would just have starved. If there wasn't enough resources for a small post hunt population, there wouldn't be enough resources for a larger post hunt population. Even (IF) fewer permits resulted in better over winter survival, recovery of the population is not as intuitive as it seems either. The first thing to come to mind is a bigger base of doe means quicker recovery. Sometimes that is the case, but not always. A smaller over wintered population might have better reproduction than a larger overwintered population.

  26. IMO don't go crazy on the expensive rods...i buy mid level walmart rods and have had good luck. Just put new line on them...as far as lures and bait I prefer live bait for most part minnows worms crayfish all depends on what your looking to catch...lures spinners (rooster tails) top water and divers are the basics all work for each own situation.

  27. Phade - One of the years in question was a record harvest at the time. DEC was making a serious effort to reduce the population. The goal - helped somewhat unexpectedly by lots of deep snow - was clearly met. They could not anticipate the amount of winter kill when they gave out the DMPs. The problem was that the reduction was not evenly spread across the state. There was a lot of pressure on DEC to increase deer numbers in Delaware County - which took a harder hit than Otsego (4F). I suspect the same occurred in other areas. My thinking is the lower gross numbers were part of the plan. Is there somewhere where you can find long term trend data?

  28. My 40th anniversary of killing my first gobbler is coming up next week. I was glancing over my "memory shelf" just tonite and spotted a turkey wishbone. The date written on it in pencil reads " May 15 1975".. It's from my first spring gobbler.. I hunted them 1n 1973 and 1974, but never killed one until 1975.. I was 25 years old..A mere wisp of a lad..I have killed at least one gobbler per year in NY except for 2 or perhaps 3 years.. I have been fortunate to have taken some other birds over the years in PA,Virginia, Kentucky and Ontario.. I've always been somewhat of a duffer at turkey hunting, although I have persued it passionately.. I have never been very good at it, but I have worn them down with persistence..

  29. This is a baseless racism complaint. If they sue on that issue, they will lose, as Illinois denies almost every request for a carry permit. race has nothing to do with it. Now if the leftists believe blacks should be approved while whites continue to be denied, that is an issue to be concerned about. That would be racism.

  31. Back in '00 and '01 two winters with deep snow pack followed a couple of years of high DMPS in western R4. Deer numbers dropped noticeably. Speaking to some people you would have thought it was the end of the world as we knew it. A couple of years later numbers were right back to the highs of the late 90s in 4F. Deer are resilient.

  32. I've been lusting after one of these since someone posted a thread about them last fall. http://www.fanaticoutdoors.com I'm too old & "girthsome" to sit on the ground for turkey hunting. I also like a seat that sets up quickly for hunting deer on the ground. Having a comfortable seat that sets up quickly makes it easy to stay put when I find hot sign while still hunting.

  40. There are many police officers who take the job simply because that is a job that they can make a decent living off of but there are also those who take the job because they want to make a positive difference in society. There isn't a single one of them who don't understand that they may not make it home when ever they put on the badge and walk out the door. But it does hit me a little more when a police officer dies in the line of duty than when a life long petty criminal does. Mainly, one of them died while trying to improve my quality of life while the other died while trying to ruin my quality of life. The fact that they know this is the inherent danger that comes with their job makes it more heroic. Some of you may look at a police officer who dies in the line of duty and say it was simply another guy or gal trying to make a living like any one else. Or you can look at a police officer who dies in the line of duty and think this was someone who really wanted to make a difference and was willing to die for it. For me to be indifferent to his willingness to put his life in danger is similar to if someone jumped in front of a me and took a bullet for me to save my life and for me to shrug and say, "his dumb a## should have known he would of died saving me."

  44. The one thing that the disclosure of these results will do is to quantify in hard numbers, the uselessness of tougher gun legislation. It takes it all out of the realm of emotion, and puts hard numbers to the futility of heaping worthless gun law on top of worthless gun law. The results will lend credibility in legal cases and also the bills in progress to limit or repeal the so-called Safe Act. It is also useful as some pretty strong talking points in any other campaigns against future gun control efforts. Shining the light on these things is the best way to make gains in the court of public opinion. It is always far better expose the failures of gun laws than to just let the emotional arguments against guns go unchallenged.
