  3. This is a horrible pic because they were way at the edge of my lens' range, but I snapped away anyhow. The story that leads up to this is the best part. I'm so happy to have been there to witness it all first hand! I'll load some more from this encounter when I have time!

  4. I agree .......................rob! Alcohol and the internet don't mix. I left my room mate alone one time and came home to find him passed out on the couch with a bottle, while logged onto my computer, under my user name. No big deal really, until I found out he was watching KITTY PORN,lol!

  8. It's easy to point a finger at the X-Box and iPhone and say that's the reason but that's sort of like admitting defeat. Sure it's a tough adversary but does that mean you shouldn't try? Generally, people won't have an interest in something if they never realize it's even an option. I never thought of hunting and camping growing up. No one in my family took me fishing or hiking. I went to college in Michigan and made some friends there. They went camping and invited me to go. I said, sure, why not? Fast forward almost 20 years and I'm here trying to promote outdoor activities. I've taken a few first timers out hiking, camping, or hunting. Some still do it. Some were one and done. But every single one of them has a much better appreciation for outdoor activities and now value our national parks. In the rural parts of the state, I'm sure every kid at least has one family member who participates in outdoor activities that'll introduce them to the sport. Even if they don't, it's right there in front of them. In the city who doesn't have anyone to introduce them to outdoor activities and they think you have to travel to some distant unknown land to do something like that. This is why people in the city are an untapped group because it is not like they had a choice between the X-Box and a fishing rod to choose from. The X-Box is the only choice they think they have.

  10. Haven't hunted blacktail, but I did hunt whitetail late August in South Carolina, their rifle season starts 8/15. Had on a T-shirt and light pants. In this part of PA, archery season starts mid September. I'd rather hunt in the summer than freeze in January, just need to dress right, bring some water or Gatorade, and don't forget the Thermacell. Got to get your meat in the refrigerator quick, flies are a bigger problem than meat spoilage.

  15. Thanks for the comments and checking them out everyone! Fehyd643- I only say that when I get frustrated when my gear falls short on some of the long range stuff. I wish I had a nice LOOOOOONG lens for those situations, but dumping a few grand on a lens for "fun" toys ain't happening. Also, I didn't spend much time on editing those before I slapped them up here so I'll leave you all with a few last bonus shots from that series that I put more effort into.

  22. Many here crack me up. You guys are saying that this is being made out as a racial thing like some of you are so pro black? LOL. Whether you want to hear it or not, the truth is that the majority of blacks are definitely NOT into the outdoors or outdoor activities. Whether it's because they can't afford it, can't get to rural places, or just a lack of interest, the facts are that only few participate. I've worked with many blacks over the years, and it was completely foreign to them that I liked outdoor activities such as hunting, hiking, etc. To most of them it seemed like a total waste of time and effort. Other races may not be interested either, but most seem at least a little more inquisitive about it. You can take this for what it's worth, but this has been my experience on this matter. There is usually a good deal of truth to most stereotypes, whether you want to accept this fact or not.

  24. I really wanted to leave this alone but..Here goes...I put a book in my pants to help ease the pain from the boots about to hit my a$$. "Inner city youths" and minorities is an odd way to still keep putting it these days. in my area, which is considered low income or "slum" if you like, white people of any age are out numbered about 6:1 by all other ethnicities. But, I don't think that matters anymore. It comes down to prying kids away from the cell phone, Face Book, game consoles, and flat out having no interest in anything not associated with technology. Sleeping in a tent and waking up to a great view of a lake isn't something many kids want to take part in. I am not saying all, but most kids brought up in a city or even rural environment have no interest being in the woods any more. I also hate to say this as well, but most parents are either too busy or just don't care about the outdoors them selves. We live in a time where even adults can't be anywhere without a cell phone connected to the web. So you expect kids to be any different? Some of these programs work to a small extent. But most don't. NOTE! This is just my personal point of view! Not intended to troll, font war, disrespect, or otherwise create chaos.

  25. OH, I love my Heineken and Stella Artois! Even Becks on occasion. Guinness is mud with foam on top. But when we camp we usually have other people. I am not taking really good beer for the cooler raider clan to chug down on me! So it's usually Bud, Bud Light, or Coors Light. I have been thinking a lot about the past lately. How when I was a kid we didn't have a tent at times, but my mom had a big old station wagon that was our camper. I was remembering a hunting trip when I was 15 where again my mom, my sister and I spent a very cold night sleeping in the back of a station wagon. Remembering family camping trips, and camping trips with the guys. How for some odd reason, I always knew the sound of my sisters b/f's ( the man that got me into hunting ) guns when he shot, and always knew there was a dead deer to be dragged out. About the first deer I shot at with a bow, Used the wrong pin, the arrow landed a few feet in front of her and she took off. I remember thinking "Damnit!" and cussing myself out. Then deciding to head out so I hung the bow, lit a cig and poured a cup of coffee. That doe circled came back and sniffed the arrow! Bow hung on a branch, coffee in one hand, cig in the other.... The time I went camping with a new backpacking tent to try it out. It wasn't a backpacking trip, me and a buddy just went for a night to get out of the city. It was raining and I hadn't water proofed my tent yet. We set up our tents, hung a tarp over the picnic table ate raw hot dogs because we couldn't get a fire going , drank beer and talked about women. I now know exactly why they call bottoms of tents tub bottom! I woke up and my pup tent was a bath tub! I had 3 inches of water in the bottom! I remember my mom trying to be the best dad she could be. Just been thinking a lot lately. About how though life hasn't been the easiest road, but there have been some great sights along the way worth remembering.

  26. it would be great if programs like this existed in the areas you mentioned...instead they resorted to contraception and sherpshooters........that's why I say take full advantage and be grateful they see the important rolls that hunters can play in deer control in suburban areas.

  27. If you want a "challenge" then challenge yourself to make a clean kill. If you only have a small caliber to use then use the right bullet and go for the lungs. Don't try to impress yourself or your friends, with head or neck shots. You can impress on paper at the range. If you have a 308 cal. use that.

  28. Last year I saw a male land on a shepherds hook. His tail was split/fanned out into a "Y" shape and he had some feathers that flared out on both sides of his neck. I only saw him from behind and it was the only time I've ever seen a hummer display like that. You inspired me to go out to try to get a hummer this evening and I did manage to get a few of one female. They're buzzing everywhere now that the rain stopped.

  32. Very cool, TF...I have never witnessed hummingbirds mating... I HAVE watched pileated woodpeckers copulating on a limb while I was spring gobbler hunting. Does that make us EVEN ?? (grin)... Aside to Curmudgeon...The first time I bowhunted elk in New Mexico, I was amazed at the variety of hummers..Lots of wildflowers in the Rocky Mountains in September for them to work on. After that trip one of my partners started bringing a hummingbird feeder to camp with us, and it provided lots of entertainment during the mid day hours when were were lounging around camp because the elk were shaded up.

  33. Valued member of the game community. If they displaced a native species or negatively impacted habitat I might change camps, but that's a long shot. There's a brief bit about this in the new issue of Grays Sporting Journal from their resident culinary contributor. Unfortunately not available on the net but worth the quick read at the newsstand.

  35. I once shot a deer that I heard at about 50 to 75 yards. Yes I heard it, because of a very loud wheezing sound that it was making. She was coming through with her head down in very obvious distress. It turned out that the wind-pipe had been severed by a slug without a whole lot of other damage. Obviously a neck shot attempt. Another deer had the lower jaw blown apart and swinging from the deer's head like a dangling piece of hamburg. Another attempted favorite shot, the "head shot" gone astray. I don't understand why people purposely go for these low percentage, limited sized shooting areas. I'm not sure whether it is some belief in their shooting prowess, or some kind of macho thing. But I know people who will pass up broadside shots where that huge heart/lung area is completely exposed, for a risky head or neck shot. Yeah, I know about the "messes up less meat" argument, but when you mess up a deer with high risk shots, you likely will wind up with no meat and an animal condemned to a slow lingering death. Again sorry for taking the thread off topic, but there is a very obscure similarity in that risky shots can also include using calibers that may not be completely satisfactory with similar results to risky shot selection. Ok, rant complete.

  36. My wife loves hummingbirds. So I have four feeders set up around our deck so she can watch at least one bird most times. I've never seen "the dance", so cool you got to witness one of natures seldom seen wonders. These little bundles of energy with their acrobatic flight are a joy to watch. Bunnies and gardens don't mix well. Good luck with that!

  37. One of the nastiest wounds I ever saw on a deer resulted from a friend of mine taking a neck shot on a PA buck with a varmint type bullet in his 22-250. If he were hunting in thick cover rather than open woods he very well may have lost it. The bullet left a shallow, pancake type wound on the surface, blowing away what looked like 2 pounds of meat, but failed to break the neck..He had to track the deer and finish it. It was still on it's feet when he finished it with a head shot. I saw a similar wound once from a muzzleloader.. The guy was usuing a saboted pistol type bullet ahead of a heavy load of pyrodex.. The bullet blew up on the shoulder and left a massive surface wound but failed to penetrate the chest cavity.. He was lucky and managed to reload and finish the deer, but it may well have escaped..

  39. If I had no other hunting opportunities, perhaps I would consider it. I watched that program on TV about the urban/suburban bowhunters (Chasing Tail), and frankly, they got involved in some rather ugly problems that I would just as soon not be confronted with. Plus, that sort of "public" hunting lacks a lot of the necessary ingredients of any hunts that I would like to be a part of. Atmosphere, nature, solitude, and all those things of that sort, are essential to the quality of the hunt ..... for me. It's a personal view of hunting that I am not trying to talk anyone into or promote. It's just the way I look at the activity and what I personally need to enjoy it. I will say that it is fortunate for city dwellers that all hunters don't have my attitude toward hunting and the environment that I personally choose in order to enjoy the experience. And I have to admit that it is a good way to fill the freezer. I personally would never try to discourage anyone from that kind of hunt. I believe that it satisfies a need and handles a very difficult management problem for urban/suburban dwellers, and thank heavens there are those that will do it. It just isn't for me.

  42. So I climbed into my observation stand last night and spotted a sneaky coyote several hundred yards away. He stuck around so long, I figured something was up. About 100 yds out he stopped and patiently stood there testing the air. That's when he finally made his move and began leaping through the tall grass jumping the buck in the first pic. The chase didn't go on for long. I believe the yote was hunting fawns and realized he may have bitten off more than he could chew! The buck would run a short distance and stop to look back to make sure the yote wasn't still on his tail. He eventually made his way right under my stand before heading off into the timber. He appeared again with another buck and they fed around the field for a while. They made their way off together and showed up one more time just before dark!

  44. Another massively satisfying hunt would be to build from scratch a long bow from some native tree (hickory?) and build some arrows with knapped stone broadheads and turkey feather fletching, and take a deer (any deer) with that rig. All equipment as carefully faithful to the details of historical Indian archery equipment as possible.

Look, I could give a crap how you or anyone get their kicks, BUT when you are the ones causing the loud booms in my neighborhood for several weeks BEFORE the 4th of July that make the dishes rattle inside my cabinets, then I will surely call YOU and THEM idiots! Yes, you must have nothing better to do than to disturb the peace and quiet of others.
