  2. It seems to me that once the animal has been reduced to non-edible carrion, it is no longer a "harvest", but simply a search of antlers. The only salvageable part of the find is the antlers, so the shooter is no longer looking for a deer. ....just the antlers. At that point the antlers become the same as sheds and whoever finds them gets the ownership.

  4. Which is why I tell gun hunters they don't know what they're missing. Bow season is great but tough because harvesting can be very tough. But you get to see deer in the natural environment. Not spooked. I'm also a firm believer that bow hunting makes you a better gun hunter. You're more patient. See the woods differently. But that's just me.

  8. Raccoons have a similar bone, and many years ago when I was a young buck, I gave one to my girlfriend's college roommate and told her it was a turkey call. I can still see her blowing on it and wondering why it didn't make any noise. She left school shortly after that and entered a convent. TRUE STORY, except for the third sentence...<<grin>>...

  10. The deer was found like 3 weeks after being shot... If the story the OP gave us was true and it was 80 yds from where they lost blood chances are it was dead within a 24 hours. The cape would've been LONG gone. The hide starts slipping after a few days. Sent from my XT907 using Tapatalk

  13. I know what didn't work. All scents I bought. Doe estrous and buck lure. Never saw anything from the direction of the scents and sometimes didn't see anything when I used it. Also my combo doe and buck call didn't seem to do anything, except maybe chase a buck away once. I grunted at it and it turned tail and ran.

  14. REAL men drink whiskey straight, or at least on the rocks. It IS permissible to chase it with beer( preferably) or water (if no beer is available). Only gay guys ruin perfectly good whiskey by mixing it with soda pop. This must be where the penis bone swizzle stick originated.

  21. I have done several now with Van Dykes skull bleaching kit. It comes with Sodium Carbonate, you mix this with the boiling water and the flesh literally comes right off the bone. I flesh it best I can and then boil for 1 hour total with the Sodium Carbonate. I can literally take a head with nothing done to it and have it totally done in 4 hours. 1 day start to finish including bleaching (let it sit overnight). http://www.vandykestaxidermy.com/Skull-Bleaching-Instructions-W377.aspx

  24. I would think "possessed" means just that, you are in possession of the means to fire it regardless of where you have it. To the one above who talked about store policy vs law, I don't think you get the point. If you have a 50 cal muzzleloader rifle and supplies and buy a 50 cal muzzleloader pistol you are technically in violation of the law if you do not have it on a permit since you do possess the means to fire it. Whether the authorities find out or not is irrelevant, it needs to be licensed.

  25. I generally skin while still warm. Last one I did was a bit concerning, luckily for me, I had a buddy with me that enjoyed torturing them by popping them. He said something about the sound of them popping soothed his inner hatred towards them or something of that affect. Hey, don't judge! 27. Most people think there is a deer shortage yet they spend every minute they get trying to kill one during deer season, yet there is a coyote overload apparently and very few hunt them... So all of the studies done are wrong and your "studies" of which you have no facts or proof are in some way correct? Makes sense...Sent from my XT907 using Tapatalk

  28. Dang , you almost hurt my feelings I'm all for shooting as many as I see. As soon as we get some snow I'll be out there with the caller and #4 buck. I know they impact deer population and any avid turkey hunter will SSS them all spring season long. This was the first spring season in a long time I didn't see one coming in to try and kill a turkey ( me )!

  29. Funny thing..........For quite a few years at my uncles cabin in Naples (on the south side of Hunt Hollow) we would often hear coyotes in groups howling at night. One evening when we had an over load of guys sleeping in the cabin, my buddy and I slept in the barn. Sometime well after midnight a group (who the hell knows how many, may have only been three but sounded like a half dozen) of 'yotes started making music RIGHT OUTSIDE THE BARN! It was scary and unreal at the same time. For all those "howling packs" over the years I've only ever got more than one 'yote on my trail camera a couple times and those were young pups. FWIW, for the most part the past 4-5 years all I've done is 20 second video from my cameras giving ample time for multiple 'yotes to make it to the big screen.

  37. Welcome to our addiction - time outdoors with a little (or alot) of time hunting. Don't sweat it - still have 2 more weeks to go for gun season. Getting a deer your second season is good. I didn't even see a deer my first 2-3 years.

  38. Well i guess you do. I don't know how to make this story short 33 years old and never hunted until this season. No one in my family has ever been into hunting so it never really appealed to me. in the last 10 years I've always thought I may enjoy hunting but never had time to take the safety course. Recently my 5 year old has been so interested in hunting that I decided I needed to learn so he could have his dad be his mentor even though one of my closest friends is an avid hunter. My friend weather he knew it or not was going to mentor me. I managed to get a safety course finished the day before opening of gun and bought a crossbow so I could practice quietly for a few days. I got accurate enough that I decided to go out sunday am of opening weekend. Spent every morning and afternoon I could sitting quietly after that. Saw lots of doe. 11 walked through one day but I didn't have the range. Even had a small doe walk almost right up to me on two separate occasions but didn't feel right about shooting such small deer. Finally my friend tells me I have to sight in the shotgun I bought, practice and get up off the ground in a stand. Okay so he sights the 12 gauge in for me. I take a shot at a target at 50yards and hit close enough that I'm comfortable. I don't really like firing the gun so I leave it at that. One practice shot. Please don't judge me or my friend for the lack of practice. I get in a stand on my property with only a small area that I can hunt legally but I feel comfortable with. I begin using a new trick of rattling fake antlers and using calls. 10 minutes before sunset I wipe my nose and sniffle from the sinus infection and bronchitis I happened to get and decide to climb down when I realized my calling was working because all I saw were white tails running. I stop, call a doe noise and they all stop. I waited 5 minutes and did it again and they started back. One nice doe makes it on my property. She looks up at me, kicks her front hooves at the ground a few time. I stayed very still at the ready. She put her head down and turned. I shoot. I do all the safe things you're supposed to do next and go to the spot where she was. No blood, no fur and dark now. I call my friend and get a flashlight. Found tiny bit of blood 25 or so ft away and start tracking. not much blood but I did find a little frag of bone so I knew I must of hit her somewhere decent. Finally found her with the help of my friend and come to find out it was a high hit through the lung so she had to fill with blood before letting much out. 2nd bullet ever shot besides a .22. My 5 year old came out to the barn while it was hanging and saw it after warning him it was bloody and dead. His reaction surprised me. "awww cool....This is a nice deer daddy. Nice size. good job." what 5 year old is so calm and collected like this. Family liked how it taste so I went back out for Sunday the last day for gun. No rattling but just calling because I figure with all this talk about no deer around I would just try for another doe. As I'm about to leave my stand and call it a morning I hear something in the woods so I hang out and call like a doe. I see antlers for the first time in my life as a hunter. Heart pumps very differently than when I shot the doe and this thing is still deep in the woods I can barely even see him. He heads away so I call the best I can. He turns and I finally get to hear how a buck really grunts. He cautiously heads towards me. Shots go off way in the distance. A large doe comes booking across the field from where the shots fired and right at me in my stand. I call again to stop her. She stands 5 yards from the tree I'm in and the buck now sees her. All of a sudden my sounds were very real to him. He head straight at me and I have to shoot before he gets too too close. He jumps into the brush and only makes it maybe 20 yards away. Shot through the shoulder a little and got a lung. Third bullet ever shot. My friend and his dad come over to help me out. This time my 5 year old comes out to see the entire gutting process. Again very calm and a little excited he said because this one had horns and again was a good size. I gutted both deer myself due to the responsibility I felt in killing these two animals. With the coaching of my friend of course. Apparently this is a big buck. They told me I need to mount it so I guess I will even though that is not really what I did this for. That is also why you won't see me in a picture with the animal. I did it for my son who has such an interest in hunting and to have good quality meat for my family. Wegmans is right down the street but this meet came from our backyard. How's that for a carbon footprint. Thanks for reading

  39. wild venison can't be sold legally but farm raised definitely can. doesn't matter if or how it's processed. it's dependent on the source of which the deer came from. I'd think they'd reimburse you the $300 but not the cost to actually replace it as it can't be determined. they probably won't reimburse for the cost for purchasable farm raised venison at $23+/lb for anything other than ground because it's not the same.

  45. Wont do anything. not enough people will care as well as all the research pointing to the fact that coyotes will bread more now that the population is being thinned. It would take a MASSIVE statewide effort to get rid of the coyote problem. If the fur prices were back to where they used to be before they plummeted and there weren't as many restrictions on the type of traps then maybe it would be better.

  48. Eastern coyotes are very skittish and leery compared to their Western cousins. I have hunted coyotes for approx. 10 yrs. I would recommend a couple of mouth calls to start. There are so many to choose from on the market. I have the Foxpro Fusion electronic call which is a premium electronic call which is out of your budget. I would look at used Foxpro FX5 models on ebay you might be able to get one around $250. or a little cheaper. The best tips I have for you: 1) Set up downwind of an electronic call approx. 50-75 yds. in light cover. Coyotes tend to not come out in open fields in daylight hours but do occasionally to calling. 2) When using mouth calls try to have a partner set up downwind to catch the coyote circling downwind same goes for electronic call. Both calling situations you are set up to catch the coyote circling downwind from the electronic call or the mouth caller. 3) As I stated above coyotes are skittish and leery you need to stay on stand for approx. 40 min. to an hr. I have had them come in at 5 min. but usually don't show till 20 min. + Note: I love using an electronic call and treestands with caller set upwind of me. Good luck!
