  1. I’d like to share a treasure. It may not be as much a treasure to you (the readers) as it is to me. But, I want to share it just for my own gratification. The inspiration came from a forum post on this website where a few of you were talking about keeping journals. Your journals were probably different reasons but I’d like to express the increase in value to the family when the author is no longer around. It’s nothing more than a portion from my father’s journals that describes his very first hunting trip to the Adirondacks but first let me give you a little background. Dad, at this time, was a single farm boy, 22 years of age, sixth grade education and trying to get by working for the town and doing odd farm work to get by during the depression. That being said here is the journal excerpt copied into text just as he wrote it. November 1929 1 F We put up snow fence. I got my deer license. I got a check for $63.00. 2 S We did not work today. I went out town and got the rest of my hunting outfit and got everything packed. We start at 6 Oclock in the morning for Star Lake. 3 Su Thirteen of us started for the mountains about 9 Oclock. We got to Star Lake about 6 Oclock. We had supper at Young’s Camp and stayed all night. 4 M We loaded our camping stuff on a wagon and went back in the woods about 9 miles and got our tent set up and some wood cut and beds set up in time to go to bed. 5 T The guide come this morning and we started hunting. We did not git any thing. 6 W I saw the first deer I ever saw runing wild. two does and a fawn standing about 50 ft away. They stood and look right at me for about a minit. We got one buck today an 8 point. 7 Th We didn’t get anything today. 8 F We didn’t get anything. 9 S We got two bucks. It got dark and we had to leave one over across the river. One 6 point and one 12 point. 10 Su We went over and got the one we left last night. I missed the first buck I saw. We got one other one today a 12 point. 11 M We got one today a 6 point. 2 points on one side and 4 on the other. 12 T I shot mine - a 6 point. Hugh Moag got his about twenty minutes after. an other 6 pointer. 13 W We didn’t git anything today. 14 Th We got one today – a 3 point. Mr. Young come in and got all the deer but the last one. We didn’t have him in camp yet. 15 F We packed up and Mr. Young came in and got our stuff. We had supper at his place and stayed all night. 16 S We got our stuff all packed on the truck and in the cars and started home about noon. We got in Perry Center about 10 Oclock. Clark came out and got Warren Brown and I. I got my check for $4.50 from the town. 17 Su We all went down to Leslie Wright’s and got our pictures taken with the deer. The trip cost us about $21.00. ggg

  2. I doubt that.Ya gotta give credit where it's due. You can't blame folks for being opinionated or even downright defensive when it comes to a sport that we all love. I think squabbling amongst each other brings to light many points/views which may otherwise be overlooked. Most adults on the site can understand the value in a good debate. How boring would it be if we all were pushover pantywaists who agree with everything/everyone? I also doubt that physical confrontation would ensue because the internet tough guys would most likely shake like a dog sh#tting burdocks if they were confronted!

  3. I've been wanting to try my hand at taxidermy for a while now. A friend walked me through the mounting process on my bow buck from this past season. I ended up picked up 5 bucks to mount. After dealing with some serious frustrations with the whole splitting/fleshing of the face, I finally had a cape ready for the pickle and tanning process. The test subject was my wife's opening morning buck. Thankfully, everything came together smoothly and I'm pretty happy with the results. Now, just have to give it a couple weeks to dry...then I can airbrush, paint and add the finishing touches. BEFORE: On to the next one!!!

  7. The reason why I wouldn't leave ammo on my dashboard is cause I don't want some little P.O.S. to see it and think where there's ammo , there might be a weapon. The next thing you know , you come back to your vehicle and find someone smashed a window and broke in.

  12. This was squashed in the late 1800's, no language in constituation clearly states that and numerous supreme court findings since have strengthened Fed ownership of land. You boys will have to find something else to argue about

  13. I was out in the woods today in a place I've only walked through once before. I came upon a spot where 4 or 5 high traffic deer trails were crossing and I couldn't believe the musky smell. It was almost overpowering. I slapped a cam on a tree and got out of there as fast as possible so I didn't leave any more scent. I can't wait to see what pops up on the cam. Could the smell be left over from the rut or do bucks continue leaving such a strong smell now? Or am I just crazy?

  14. Hello everybody, my name is Jim and have been an avid hunter for around 30 yrs. I hunt mostly just deer with bow/muzzleloader and rifle, mostly on the Tughill plateau. I live in the Watertown NY area. I consider myself a meat hunter first/trophy hunter second. I have never been a part of any forum at all but have been reading some posts on here now for a few weeks and it seems like a great group of hunters. I cant get enough of talking about my favorite pastime and I look forward to trading stories and information with people of like minded interests as well as meeting new friends

  15. Some does are still cycling if they were not bred on the first or second estrus cycles they come into season again every 26 days or so. It will be interesting to see the photos, but the breeding party or what I call the Whitetail Breeding Nucleus (WBN) moves through the woods. The action, hence the smell, is not stuck in a static place. The action probably has moved on and like the scent,...the breeding pheromones that you smelled will quickly disperse. But as to crazy...who am I to say?

  17. I would stay in the area but definitely would be looking to buy a very large farm with about 1000 acres and build homes on it for the entire family and maybe use one of the old corn field for a golf course.....

  25. I hit an 8 point a couple of years ago in the hindquarter with my truck. He cartwheeled off the road. When I walked up on him he was taking his last breath. There was no external bleeding. Even though I hit him in the hind quarter, the pressure that transferred to his abdomen and forward, causing multiple blood vessels to burst. His chest and abdomen were full of blood even though I hit him in the hindquarter. BTW, his rack was unscathed and hangs in my garage with the salvage tag the state trooper gave me. At the time I was thinking, "Gee, free buck and those salvage tags are free and unlimited." My $500 deductible proved otherwise.

  27. If I won, I buy you all the biggest dam piece of hunting grounds available in this state, FR. Then establish an ideal habitat for different species. You would all be invited as long as you can get along with each other. Think that could work? I think I'll just wait to get struck by lightning instead.

And I'm one of those sissy's that doesn't venture on the ice, until I see snowmobiles and atv's out there first. Having fun hunting coyotes, for now though.

In order, pay off house, cars, loans, and credit cards, then fully fund my kids' college funds, buy the RV that the wife and I have wanted for years, build of our house and my shop for the business, give a boatload to the NRA, invest a large portion of it, and take a 6-month vacation coming home just in time for bow season.

  43. Fired up the grill for a couple t-bones. Along with that roasted baby golds, jalapeno stuffed mushrooms ( used my homemade canned jalapeno's ), sauteed garlic and shallots to top the steak, and garlic steamed asparagus ( yes, we love our garlic in this house ). Might wash it down with a Grolsch.

  44. I agree with locking down the school, however I will rather have the school over-react, call me selfish but my daughter's safety and the safety of the other students and teachers take priority over the potential "ruining" of a students record.

  45. I remember when I was in 9th grade , I brought my father's souvenir Japanese rifle to school for a "show & tell" in my social studies class. Here I was walking down the street , getting on a school bus and walking into school with a fully functioning firearm in plain view and no one said a damn thing. In fact , I was the toast of the school bus that day, lol. Times have changed unfortunately.

  46. I doubt that mountain bikers would spook game just passing through as I have ridden right up on bears, deer & turkeys before they spooked. Kinda scary in bear country actually. When riding in the spring & summer in bear country I make sure to make plenty of noise. I wouldn't want to surprise a mama bear with cubs. Mountain bikes are illegal in some area though.

  47. Damn Biz, I never thought of it like that! I'm going out on a limb and say this: Considering I've been with the same gal (and true to her) for 26 years, see my doctor twice a year for all the blood work & necessary shots and drink just enough bourbon to kill any badass germs I might contract in day to day contact I wouldn't worry a bit. You will also (at no extra charge) get my own personal guarantee. That guarantee is kind of long winded mumbo jumbo but in really boils down to three minutes/three miles coverage. (provided through AARP of course) Just send me the money ya cheap bastid............

  48. I was just walking around some of the woods that this buck lived in. You have to see some of the cedar trees rubbed up. Not just one or two but 10-15 huge trees ribbed to shit. Pretty amazing but he is not the only big one that lives there. FYI just found a tick crawling up my neck. Warm weather has these bastards out again. BTW for the salt fisherman I have never seen so much bait in Northport harbor so late into December. There is plenty of hearing but acres of peanut bunker and other baitfish. Water hovering around 48-50 degrees.
