  5. I don't know about your pooch but my old girl can only stand 5-10 minutes MAX in these temps before she starts limping badly. Sometimes she looks like she's going down........I quickly get her back into the house and she is good. It kills me because she just loves to be outside, especially when I'm out monkeying around. Tough watching them get old............ So, keep an eye on your pups, this weather is brutal on them.

  6. I haven't seen much evidence of yarding here in Erie Co.(9h) Matter of fact, I haven't seen much evidence of deer gatherings PERIOD. Perhaps the are yarded somewhere I am not aware of, but they really seem to be spread out more this winter compared to years past around here. Here's shot I got back in 2013 while shed hunting in East Aurora. This was probably only half of them I could fit in the frame out in the field at one time. I remember another herd of equal size at the other end of this field at the same time.

  16. I will be mentoring a young lady from NJ this year thanks to a good friend. She doesn't have anyone to take her so I volunteered to do so. I'm really looking forward to it as the last time I took a youth out was in 2012. I really enjoy introducing young hunters to the sport of hunting and especially to the sport of spring turkey hunting. The look on their face when they harvest a bird is priceless. How many of you will be taking a youth out this spring season?

  18. I've been a UPS driver for over 19yrs. Cold yes but two winters ago was the longest stretch of cold weather I can remember in Rochester. Every morning I would wake up and it would be like -12 or similar. Then I would check the weather at the cottage near Watertown and it would be something like -23 and I wouldn't feel so bad and get on my way. I have had lost a few customers in my time to the cold. Always somebody over indulging in snow removal. Not saying any of you are old but take it easy!

  19. Heck yeah, same youth as last year. I was talking to him last weekend and he's all fired up to go. We had an awesome hunt last year and he was able to tag a nice long beard.

  24. This is a lively section of the site, and I find it important to get a feel for what other NY hunters and sportsmen think about issues other than hunting and the outdoors. It's a much more local pulse-taking for me, and a break from the reading and writing I do at the national and international politically-focused web sites. The name-calling and personal attacks here seem to come from a very small number of those participating in otherwise intelligent discussions. One member recently admitted that he was posting only to irritate and inflame. That kind of behavior does not encourage intelligent discourse. We are free to disagree, but I want to know why we disagree. My neighbor's three year old son can get away with simply calling me a poopy-head, but I expect a bit more from a thinking adult. We're in the midst of the most game-changing and controversial presidential election in recent memory. Everything is politically charged right now and ignoring that fact won't make it go away. The issues are either discussed intelligently, right now, or "We The People" will have surrendered our voice. Best, Mark

  27. After reading this thread, I decided to put up an avitar pic. But what to use?? So I chose the number one buck on my hit list, "the split ear buck"! He will be a five year old this fall. My grandson got this pic of him on his trail cam, that was given to him by a member here. It will be a constant reminder, to stay focused on putting my hands on him, this fall.

  31. same vintage...my 1st pair of black Converse high tops. Probably didn't cost more than $10-12 in the 1960s. BTW - Stock photo, my pair has long since been in sneaker heaven! Ugly, huh? There were super cool back them.

  32. Never bought a used pair of shoes in my life. Some of them last a year or more... When they get shabby I use them for yard work or whatever. I use my CLEANEST pair as my " Sunday go to meetin'" sneakers. I don't own many shoes...One pair of "good" sneakers, a couple pairs of kick-arounds, and one pair of black leather dress shoes for weddings and funerals. Then of course, I have 4 pairs of hunting boots, a pair of hip waders and a pair of chest waders for the important stuff.

  34. It's hard to say from a post on line what I could be worth. Farm land around mine is going for close to 4k an acre , yet a half hour away my buddy picked up 60 acres for 1k an acre. It was oddly shaped with little road frontage , long and narrow and a steep slope , scrub land no use for farming or development = little value . Swamp = little value . Myself I have little to zero interest in any land that has wet lands ( swamp ) to,many epa horror stories , and little chance of increasing values . For 125 k you could fly around the country for the rest of your life hunting the best deer county in the U.S., you would be eating fine steaks and drinking beer while they gut and process your trophy . Heck if you were half way good at investing you could do it off the yearly return off 125k while maintaining the principal .

  41. Do some of you not realize this guy is using public land set aside for conservation of our animals and resources for his own financial gain? Listen to Steven rinellas podcast with the first lite guys. These guys are using public land for their own financial gain and claiming to be patriots? Burning public land? Wtf?

  42. All avenues must be exhausted through the legal process. The stumbling block to that in many cases is when the Govt is the one you have a grievance with. They have eternally deep pockets (thanks to you and me), while a private citizen doesn't. I definitely don't see it as "better" and doubt I would see it ever come to that in my lifetime but given the wedge that is driven into our society, I could be convinced it is coming in the future.

  44. $1,000 for a pair of used shoes? I remember my grandfather telling me when I was a boy, "Some people will buy anything. I can sh*t in a bag, put a fancy label on it, and call it garden fertilizer".
