  3. A lady friend of mine called to say hello. She likes to fish and I had a book on fishing for all the game fish in North America I wanted her to have. As we talked, she said her daughter is going on the youth turkey hunt with some other friends. It will be her first time hunting. She said they have lots of turkey on their land and usually do well. Mom bought her daughter a nice Mossberg 500 youth model in 20 gauge with screw in chokes to use. She got the turkey choke and 3" #5's for her too. As we talked, I asked if the girl has a sling. She did not. I told her to stop over and pick up the book and I'd give her one of the many extra slings I have that never gets used. I then started to find lots I stuff I never use anymore. Insulated camo coveralls, non-insulated camo coveralls, (both too small for me for years now) camo hat, neckerchief, face mask, license holder, gloves, seat cushion, belt, turkey call, hoodie, olive drab wool sweater, some netting, hand muff I used to use to bowhunt, a bore snake, and anything else I felt she might need to get started. I also scrounged up two good compact folding knives, some Cutters insect repellent and some bug bite relief spray. They came over yesterday evening and I gave them all this stuff. And since she plans to hunt deer too, I gave her 10 rounds of Winchester 20 gauge slugs to see how it shoots them later in the year. I also gave her a few rounds of 2 3/4" #3 Buckshot to have available if she ever needed to defend herself when home alone. (They live in a very rural area). We talked for awhile about hunting turkey, shooting guns and buying equipment. I answered a lot of her questions. I told her to call or e-mail anytime if she felt I could help her out. I like to do whatever I can to get new hunters started in the sport, every chance I get. She said she's going to call me about adding weight to the stock to cut recoil and adding some sights to the vent rib for slug shooting. I wished her good luck when they left. I hope she bags a nice one. Mom said they would invite me for the turkey dinner.

  4. I got up to the Adirondacks last weekend for some more shed hunting. I found a nice 4 point right away. Maybe a mid 130s buck, but pretty good for that area. (#53, 4/15/16) Fleur saving me the trouble of having to pick it up myself... Fleur found this ancient 4 point buried in the leaves. It looked to be 8-10 years old, maybe even older. Hard to believe the porcupines didn't get it. (#54, 4/15/16) Fleur came through again deep in a spruce swamp... It happened so fast I wasn't able to get good pictures. (#55, 4/15/16) I managed to find one more for myself at the end of the day. (#56, 4/15/16) Group photo:

  5. Today is the day that NYS residents vote in the presidential primaries, both Democrat and Republican. It's a 'closed' primary, so you have to be registered for one party or the other to vote today. Not a political post, just a public service announcement.

  16. I used to enjoy it when I had the time to spare. Nowdays I just dont, and it has become something that sucks up time I really could be using doing something constructive instead of riding around burning gas for a couple of hours at a crack. It has nothing to do with hating being outside or anything like that.

  17. Really hate to follow Sam ...... Went to a friends land in Macedon . I don't know the land well , only hop in one of his stands a couple times a year. Walked it to learn the land better and shoot my new Glock. Found the shed 50 minutes in to the walk and the small head a few minutes after. Number 7 shed for me in maybe 12 to 15 hours of walking around blindly. I just can't grid search to boring for me I just hike trails and such looking for good spots to hang stands .

  19. This forum is not really a true sample of NY Deer Hunters as a whole... the survey gives a good idea of the attitudes of those on this forum, but I don't think it reflects actual overall attitudes of most hunters from around the state... there are more informed and less ignorant hunters that regularly participate in this forum... I won't go as far as saying "the cream of the crop" but better informed than the vast majority of NY hunters.

  24. For any used item, 30 days for a refund is very generous. After that, it's silly to even ask. Especially anything electronic. That's why you should ALWAYS try it out immediately after receiving the item. Case closed.

  26. For turkey this thing is my favorite. Once I figured out to fold it back up into the neat little circle, it sets up or takes down in under a minute and I just strap it to my pack when we pick up to move. I like that it's semi-mobile, lightweight, and packable, and offers the best protection from the swarming black flies. I leave the fiberglass rods at home as I don't mind the sagging roof hunting with a gun. Never really bothered brushing it in for turkey either. Just cleared away the leaves on the floor where I'll set it up and start cluckin'!

  28. I always try to help out the ladies too. I once asked Miranda Lambert if she'd like to hunt turkeys with me, and she said she'd love to but she had to wash her hair that day. Then I asked her if she'd like to go out to dinner and she said she'd love to but she never dates guys who are shorter than she is.

  30. This pic is of 3 of my great uncles in Italy. They were out rabbit hunting back in the late 30's, early 40's. The dogs were hunting when they started baying very different than when they were on a rabbit. My great uncle, standing on the passenger side running board, took off running towards them and found that they had encountered a pack of wolves. By the time he got there the wolves had already killed one of the dogs. My uncle raised his side by side and took aim at the first wolf. By the time the smoke cleared and his gun jammed somehow, he had killed three wolves. When my other uncles arrived the remaining wolves had run off. Needless to say it was a day that they wouldn't forget for as long as they lived. The only remaining great uncle still alive is the gentleman standing on the driver's side running board. He's in his mid 90's now and I call him every deer season from camp to tell him that we're there and he loves to hear how we are doing and how many deer we killed. He hasn't hunted in years but he loves to hear the stories. Least I could do is call him and let him live it through us.

  31. After a few years of searching for a Savage 10ML-II and not wanting to pay the 1,000 price tag they have come to be the past few years. I found one Saturday at the gun show in Syracuse for a very reasonable price. Could not be happier! I took the breech plug out and found everything to be pres tine. Only problem I had was getting the vent-liner out of the breech plug. The prior owner must have forgot to ant-seize the threads. Calling savage to get a new breech plug on order. My next test will to be to locate some IMR 4759 or some N110.

  34. Turkey feathers, very nice patterns, I myself switched to 3-1/2" Longbeards last year only to switch back. They were actually too tight for my liking in my 3-1/2" gun. This spring I've been running em through an Ithaca turkeyslayer and I love the patterns. Very dense n consistant both through a .675 factory briley choke and an Indian Creek .665. Great loads. Want to commend you for mentioning patterning n shooting at birds are two different things n while a gun may pattern further ethical hunters prefer closer shots.

  36. Thanks for the thoughts gentlemen. I may have a line on a very good deal for the Bushnell Bone Collector RF. Should work fine and for the price, if it lasts at least 3-4 years, it will be worth it.

  38. That's neat! Like Skillet's recent score, cool when you get what you want after some searching. Consider trying some of the Parker Ballistic Extreme 275 grain bullets, they've been tremendous out of mine and my buddies NULA smokeless guns, pushed by SR 4759. Either way, keep us posted on progress.

  42. You guys a deplorable. I rarely get involved in pissing contests on this forum, but to listen to a bunch of you who have done NOTHING other than criticize someone for making an effort to gather opinions is ridiculous. REGARDLESS if gjs survey accomplished his target, at least he took at shot at trying to gather opinions that the DEC didn't bother with. The DEC gathered 2,800 opinions out of 550,000 hunters and used that as a representative of all of us. He collected 750 opinions with little more than a couple bucks and this useless forum. Goes to show, if nothing else, how little our DEC tries to capture the essence of our hunting community. You all have 2 choices: Do your own survey however the heck you want or shut the $%# up. Sitting in your chair criticizing the questions, the content, the results, the person who did it, while doing NOTHING to contribute to our hunting community says more about who you are than the person who at least tried.

  43. I am with ya on most..Even the Grange dances. lol Also was a time where a guy could walk anywhere up north where i grew up and hunt. my best bunny spot now holds Ogdensburg's Wal-mart. That is the reason i put my money into dirt and as much as i could get my hands on. Me or mine will never have the lack of spot's or deal with the yellow sign syndrome. Young fellas that hunt today would be smart to do the same!

  45. Kind of cool to see the way a flock of breeding turkeys moves through the woods. Two old (3.5 and up) lead a flock of hens. The two black birds on the right side of the frame are the curmudgeons, leading about 12 hens. The third frame is a good sized group of gals for my neck of the woods (on the Pa. border) these days. The fourth frame shows a 2.5 year old trailing the hen group and two adult toms, at a respectful distance.

  46. You do have to admit that the survey results do differ from what the DEC has said in many of their disclosures. Methodology imperfections aside, the results are so far different in some of those categories that it does raise valid questions.

  47. the antlerless season failed not because of equipment, it failed because it was basically done behind closed doors, announced late in the summer, essentially trying to force the season an antlerless only down hunters throats, but the single greatest reason it failed is because of the single biggest issue the DEC can not control,,,, hunter ACCESS! It doesn't matter how many tags are given, how many days are given, what weapons are allowed,,,Its pretty simple to understand that hunters can NOT kill deer they can NOT get access to. there are far too many small parcels completely locked down for access to anyone that give a large number of deer a safe sanctuary during the season, and it doesn't take long for the deer to figure that out. If you think the almighty crossbow is going to bring the population under control in a single year you are delusional, if gun hunters can not get the populations under control how are such a small number of crossbow shooters going to do it especially when a vast majority of the deer go nocturnal once season starts.
