  1. This guy showed up in the corn field. Not sure which buck he is from last year yet. Time will tell.

  2. My old Delta spindle sander finally gave up the ghost, so I up-graded to a Jet bench top model this time around. It is much taller than my old Delta, so I had to make a small bench to make it a more comfortable height. I also took the plunge on a new band saw as well. This one is a 14" floor model by Laguna. What a joy to use this incredible machine compared to my little 8" bench top model!!! Really getting back into the wood working no that I am retired!!!

  3. This only lasted a minute last night from the observation stand. The sunsets here glow spectacular-iilly if you catch them at the right time! It literally painted the forest orange, and was pretty amazing to see! Unfortunately buck sightings were limited to two punks the entire night. Would have loved to have caught one in this light!

  12. No, it doesn't, and that should change. If you go to a big store and don't get a well informed clerk, you might not be able to figure it out at all. Bizarrely, the non-lead stuff has the lead warnings on it just as if it were lead. It must be some federal rule. All Barnes brand bullets and ammo is copper. They invented the stuff, but not to be lead free. They created a better bullet. The non-lead aspect is just an unintended fringe benefit. This DEC page lists the brand names of non-lead ammo for some major manufacturers - http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/48420.html. I find the Barnes and Federal Trophy Copper the most available. Both have performed excellently. The best selection near me is at Bass Pro in Utica.

  15. Eagles get almost all of their water from their food. It is a rare thing for them to drink. If there was naturally occurring lead in water, it might contaminate fish - which are eaten by bald but not golden eagles - however, the increase in blood-lead during and after hunting season coincides with bald eagles relying more on scavenging in the cold months and less on fish. Also - unlike mercury which binds with organic compounds - lead does not bioaccumulate. Levels in fish would not be expected to be higher than that of the water. The seasonal lead levels and food sources would have to be reversed for fish to be a major source. The similarities between the two eagle species - with similar levels - and timing both argue against an aquatic source. Then there is the isotopes. There are multiple isotopes of lead. The one used in ammo is the one found in eagles and other scavengers. When examined, copper matching the jackets of bullets also shows up in their blood.

  16. One problem with getting data: most birds that are killed by lead, or become sick enough to die from other causes are not found. We were able to identify one source of lead because we were tracking an eagle. DEC was able to do the same thing with the bird that died last week - but as far as I know, did not enter the property where the bird had been feeding. Peter Nye - retired DEC and one of the people most responsible for the recovery of bald eagles - told me while we were filming that a researcher in the mid-west had documented over 1000 bald eagles affected (sick or dead) over 2 decades. Todd Katzner - a USGS raptor biologist says "Each year hundreds or thousands of bald eagles nationwide become ill from lead poisoning." There is no consensus on what lead level is dangerous. There seems no debate that blood lead above 10 μg/dL is clearly problematic. The bald eagle in video that died had a level of 65 when is was captured by hand. Since the birds are relatively few in number, and dead birds are hard to find, determining the magnitude of the problem requires looking at the blood lead levels of living, wild birds. I do not know of any research of this type on bald eagles in the east. Brian Bedrosian tested 63 eagles of both species in the Yellowstone ecosystem. "The median blood lead levels for eagles during the hunting season was significantly higher than the non-hunting season (56.0 vs. 27.7 μg/dL, respectively;)." See link below - http://www.biologicaldiversity.org/campaigns/get_the_lead_out/pdfs/health/Bedrosian_and_Craighead_2009.pdf Researchers east and west have been trapping and tracking golden eagles, and testing their blood. I have data on 239 birds, of which 49 are eastern birds. 58% of western birds and 61% of eastern birds were above the 10 μg/dL number. Given almost identical results on goldens east and west, I would expect similar findings with bald eagles - if someone tested them here, their lead levels would be similar to Yellowstone.

The Battle of the Bastards....What can I say other than the overused term AWESOME ?? Hated to see the Giant get snuffed, tho...I don't think they are making any more of them, or mammoths, either...

  18. Where do you have up to date at minimum 2015 stats and data on the topic? As was mentioned, most of this data is out dated. How many predatory birds have been killed by lead ammo from say, 2010 to date? It still doesn't change the fact that I am sick and tired of NYS residents and the "Go Green" crew telling me and others what ammo we should use! With all the other BS going on this is the battle you pick? We are on the verge of possibly having guns banned as a whole. I would think more people would be on board to save the 2nd Amendment over all the worry about lead ammo. Just my opinion as an American.

  20. You can preach all about the disadvantages of lead ammo and try to persuade people to use non-lead bullets, like a missionary trying to convert native Americans, and you will not get much push back. However, if you cross over the line and start pushing a law banning lead ammo, or even supporting one, you should expect to get a lot of push back. There any many reasons this will happen and people have a right to object. Once you partner with the government against people's individual freedom of choice, especially without a consensus, you will be viewed as subversive. I like Barnes X bullets, but do not want anyone telling me I cannot use anything else if I choose to.

  21. The trip was OK. Cabins are very close to each other. Fishing stunk! I heard a lot about Indian Lake being great fishing. If you have a boat to get to deep water for the trout or hit the coves and points for bass and pike. We mainly caught 3-5" Rock Bass and Small mouth Bass. The biggest was around 9". Great food, and lots of beer! The g/f took more pics so once she gets them from the camera to her PC I have a few more.

  22. For the recoil sensitive with bear in mind I would go for a 7mm-08 . 25-06 is a good cartridge but in my opinion doesn't do anything that another better know cartridge doesn't do as well or better. I have one and can't remember the last time I shot it. Like I said nothing wrong with them and the recoil isn't bad at all but for a woman or youth I would go with a 7mm-08 as a "step up" from a 243.

  28. This is where I see denial and arrogance in those who promote non-lead ammo. When someone uses the lead ban for waterfowl hunting to defend the elimination of lead rifle bullets, they spin it as voluntary, but want it to be mandatory. And that would be mandatory with all of the government imposed penalties that come with it. Also, implying that most hunters are not aware of the issue and cannot make informed choices is really calling them stupid, mainly because they don't want to go along with the program for whatever reason. Finally, saying they will make better choices when they have more information is a sign of a superiority complex, believing you know the only right answer to the problem and do not question your own choices. Yes, lead is bad, deer bullets using lead may be affecting raptors, (but so are many other things) they may even be contaminating some venison for consumption if not properly butchered. But do we want the government telling us it is now making the choices in this area for us by force, because they make better decisions than we do? Do we want to hand over freedom of choice here, like we did for waterfowl, without being absolutely sure the actual effects claimed are caused by deer bullets? If you believe it's harming you, choose not to use lead bullets. But do not think you have the authority, or even moral high ground, to tell others what to do. If you can't sway hunter's opinion on lead ammo with information, unless you are a total statist, you cannot use that same information to pass a law effecting others against their will. That's where America is going on many issues these days. It is completely against the original concept of freedom of choice and liberty this country was founded on.

  29. They are out feeding their pups now .. cam is on friends place he has problem with them, I don't have a problem with them here (about 2.5 miles from me. I'm lucky if I get 1 coyote on cam all fall.. but, my neighbor and I get after them and with friends thay trap amd call they don't last by me. He doesn't let people on his property and has problems.. management is hard and you need help, allowing a trapper or other hunters is a useful tool that many will not use as they are to worried someone will get their deer or come back and poach the deer they see . I haven't had that problem and have had them kick others off while they are trapping or predator hunting.. they respect me for allowing them the access to begin with and though we started as strangers we have become friends...

  30. I don't see the problem. I shoot a deer in the heart/lungs, and I should be worried about eating the meat? Must be missing something.

  31. if there's something out there that is just as good as lead without the possible dangers, I'm all for it as long as it's a choice.....as long as it kills what I'm shooting, I really don't care, dead is dead.

  36. If you search the literature you will discover that the smaller the lead particle, the easier it enters the bloodstream. And that there is no safe level of blood lead. It accumulates in many tissues, but also in bone were it mimics calcium. When women get pregnant calcium and lead is leached from the bones and enters the bloodstream of the fetus and later into the milk, Fetus and infants have a much lower level of tolerance for lead. An adult can have low levels of blood lead but still have health problems linked to lead exposure when he was a fetus or infant. Also, the story about lead naturally occurring in the environment is irrelevant. So is radon and a lot of harmful stuff.

  39. I won't say if they are more or less skittish, but I will say they are more curious. Once you get off the road there is a good chance that a deer hasn't seen a human before. I have had deer see me and or smell me and still walk up to me curiously. Never a big buck but I have had mature bucks give me 2nd chances that a mature deer in other areas would have never given me.

  41. That's a proper attitude and thinking Rattler. This whole thing is flat out silly! There's no current "FACTUAL" numbers/stats on how many 'birds' are effected from lead ammo. Every time I read one of these threads about lead ammo I think of the stupid gun control nuts that are eventually getting their way. It starts as a snowball and ends in an avalanche! I want to protect the environment and the creatures that inhabit it as much as anyone. I really wish people would stop telling other people what ammo to use, what guns they can own, and what time they can fart!

  44. I was watching a documentary with my grandson about the Grand Canyon, a good part of it was about a pair of condors that were nesting there, this would have been their first chick to survive, and either one or both of the parents were routinely trapped and tested for lead. Lead seems to be the biggest obstacle to the recovery of the species. A couple of great links here: https://www.nps.gov/grca/learn/nature/condor_updates.htm https://www.nps.gov/grca/learn/nature/condor-re-introduction.htm and this one on how a program to switch to non-lead ammo seems to be encouraging for the condors. http://grandcanyonnews.com/main.asp?SectionID=74&SubSectionID=114&ArticleID=10998 So, this is what I believe about the issue with lead in ammo. I started hunting some 50 years ago on my family farm in Delaware County. All our ammo was lead, there were no laws even for hunting waterfowl with lead. My house had shingles(for siding) made of asbestos, and the town would oil the roads once a year to keep the dust down, some of that oil probably had PCBs in it(it was cheaper),and it was perfectly legal. http://www.balch.com/files/Publication/a398308c-8127-41ee-b6bb-38fa16d76bda/Presentation/PublicationAttachment/569e4dcf-dc3c-4d54-b543-0a7fa02d93cc/PCB%20-%20THead.pdf My point being, is that we learn from things, and what we have always done, sometimes we can’t continue to do, and shouldn’t because we know better.

  45. Very informative video. I used the Remington copper sabots for many years when hunting with a slug gun. The were very accurate out of my Ithica. Last year was the first with a rifle for me. I did try a solid copper bullet but did not get as good a group as the Nosler ammo that shot great. Perhaps I'll try the copper ammo again. But will not try to sway another hunter in his choice or vote for another regulation placed on hunters. Also I've been eating lead shot venison all my life. Perhaps that explains a few things!
