This guy snuck in on me this morning. I was looking left and he got my attention by destroying a bush 30 yards to my right. I was able to stand, grab my bow, and turn without spooking him. He took a few steps and turned to leave. He took one step and the arrow was gone. He went about 100 yards and piled up.

My wife took a new job and it's kicking her butt. I've been having to look after our son since my wife has been bringing work home constantly and is now always tired. So I haven't been able to hunt much all season. I went opening day of bow season for an all day sit and one afternoon sit this whole season. Yesterday (10/23), I went for my second all day sit of the season and I thought it wasn't going to go well since we got there a little late and sun was just breaking the horizon as I was hiking in. I hiked into my spot (ground, natural cover), dropped my bag on the ground, set my bow down, removed the quiver from my bow set that on the ground as well. Right after wards, I literally stood up, put my fist on my hips, sighed, and thought to myself, "well, today is going to suck" and boom...out of the corner of my I saw a deer coming down the game trail. I immediately ducked behind the tree, grab my bow with my left hand and trying to reach my quiver with my right hand (barely reaching it with the tips of my fingers). I quietly removed an arrow and nocked it. As the deer approached closer, I drew back but stayed behind cover which is two trees that forms a "V". The deer walks down the path but comes to a split in the game trail and stops...for what seem like an eternity. Twice, my arms got tired and I undrew the bow. I was afraid that I was going to be too fatigued by the time the deer gave me an opening so I decided not to draw until it decided with path to go. Path A gives me a 20 yards shot for sure. Path B was something like a 40 yard shot. I ranged it a some time ago. The deer of course decided on Path B but again, stops after a few steps. Where's the range finder. Damn! It's still in my bag. Luckily, it was unzipped. I reached in, pulled out my ranger finder and ranged a tree further down the path at 43 yards. All while completely behind cover. I then leaned to the right and the deer had moved a little further down but is not slightly blocked by a smaller tree and it's head was up. Damn again. I duck back behind cover. I lean the my left and I see the deer's tail. Okay, it's still there. Wait a little more. Lean to the right again and again, deer is standing behind the tree with its head up. Duck back behind tree. Okay. Lean left again to see the tail and the tail was gone! Craps. I lean right and the deer was right there...it had moved a few feet past the tree and has its head down in the grass. I drew...aim right behind the shoulders with my 40 yard pin and let it fly. I heard a "thunk" and the deer immediately turned 180 and ran over hill. I didn't see an arrow sticking out but then again, after a 180 turn, I'm looking at the other side as it ran away. So limping or anything. I was like "Damn! I missed!" So went down to where it stood to retrieve my arrow and I could find my arrow. Huh? If I missed then the arrow should have been buried in this dirt mound and tree that was right behind it. No arrow. I looked some more and found some drops of red blood and white hair. Now I went from feeling bad that I missed to feeling bad that I injured it and it ran off with my arrow. I followed the trail for only a few feet and now I'm seeing tons of red blood. After some more thought, I figure...if it hit the brisket (due to the white hair) my arrow should have gone right through. For it to get stuck and have that much blood, it must have been a pretty solid hit. I backed off. Now my mindset has changed to this being a day of tracking. I hiked back to my car to drop off some of my gear in preparation for some serious tracking. To get to my car, I would have not have to pass through where the deer went but I would have to at least circle around it. As I walking around it, I saw a piece of white in some brown brush. Initially I thought it was a white plastic shopping bag but then I though that might be my deer. I decided I'm not going to risk pushing anything so I continued towards my car. I sat there until an hour had passed. At one hour on the dot, I got out of my car and hiked back in the direction of where I initially shot at the deer but I pass by that white shopping bag again and I kept staring at it. It's been over an hour now so why not? I went towards that white color and there it was...my deer. I arrived at my spot on 7:10. I shot the deer at 7:28. Turns out: 1. It wasn't a doe as I initially thought but a spike. For a spike it was pretty hefty....for Westchester standards. 2. I didn't miss. I was pretty much dead on. Arrow hit maybe an inch or 2 above where I was aiming at. 3. Not sure why the red blood and white hair. I took out both lungs, broke one rib, and it was a complete pass through. 4. I never did find my arrow.

This guy was 5 yards from me when I noticed him. Couldn't hear him with the crazy wind and rain. I had to let him walk until he finally went into my shooting lane. I let my 100 grain muzzy fly at 32 yards. It hit him a little back or I thought. I let him go 6 hours. My Dad and started at impact and found him 75 yards later. The 3 blade muzzy found both lungs. Awesome hunt and easy recovery. Thanks everyone.

I killed a buck last night around 5:30.......got in the stand at 3:30 prepared for the cold and wind. Man was the wind blowing, there was NO doubt what direction the wind was coming from as it was steady as can be from the north west. I was wearing my glasses and not my contacts so my eyes took a while to get used to the bright leaves and darn near full foliage. This was my first time bow hunting this year and I was excited to be back in the saddle. I had a doe sneak behind me around 4:00 while I was seated so I decided I'd better stand for the rest of the shift. The wind was crazy and with that and the wet leaves, you'd never hear one coming. My head was swiveling left, center and then to the right when all of a sudden as I was looking to my left I see a blurred brown flash off to my right and below me. I steal a quick glance down and here's this buck skidding to a halt STRAIGHT down. He's withing 12" of the base of the tree where just two hours before I'd stood and hooked my bow to the haul rope. He looks right up at me and I quickly made the decision to go for the bow, regardless of his next move. I got the bow, hooked the release on and drew back; he freaked out and took two quick bounds to my left and stopped, quartering away. Before I could react, the arrow was gone, slicing right through the boiler room. A quick 40 yard run and he was down......... Well now I went and did it. I punched my buck tag on my first sit, not what I was figuring on. He looked good as it was all unfolding, now he's dead and I'm hunting doe. I'm figuring 2.5 years old, 4 on the left and two on the right. 17.5" inside. I didn't weigh him but probably 140lbs.

I pass up a lot of bucks under 200" every year. I wont shoot anything over 200" because I like to have them around to pass on their good genetics!

Sorry if this is long winded. I am from long island and have property near hancock. It is really tough for me to get time away from work and family to hunt. Long island hunting doesn't interest me at all. For me it's all about getting away. Getting camp all set up, having a few cold ones by the fire, breaking each other's balls, eating some good food, strategizing over where to go and the anticipation of the hunt. Then once in the woods all that comes with it. Seeing the woods "wake up", so many species of animals that I am fortunate to have watched. Then culminating with actually harvesting a deer. How many points is really inconsequential. The whole experience is special to me. Every small racked buck is a trophy to me. I think it comes down to why do you hunt. Whatever your reason is it should be respected and not questioned. Just my 2 ¢

So guys what a morning. Live from home now. 9ish am I noticed a doe walking down the path right to me. I stood up and heard something drop outta tree. Figured was one of my antlers for rattling. Anyway doe didn't even flinch walked right down the path 20 yards in front of me I whistled she stopped and arrow shot true. She took 2 steps and dropped. Awesome I'm pumped filling tags with the new bow. Go to get my phone and text dad and wife....no phone. Looked down and there it is at base of tree. No biggie so I get down to get phone and process deer. Pick up phone screen is broke buttons won't work nothing works. Now I'm p^&%*$*... so I gut her get back to truck and drop of to processor on way to phone place 100 bucks and few hrs later I have a new screen and phones working. No pics obviously. If this guy (hang em high) is shooting 6 points then he isn't killing mature deer, anyone trying to kill mature deer doesn't look for a set amount of points, they judge from the body characteristics. He's just another keyboard commando who watches too much Drury Brothers on tv... I too can kill 6 pts every year on state land, I typically choose not to as I would like to cross paths with them again in the future, but I also don't belittle guys who are happy with said buck. I enjoy hunting. I keep my tags until the last minute unless I see a big buck. I will shoot a spike in the last day and be perfectly happy with my season. To date I have let 13 different bucks go this season if I haven't killed a big one by the last few days I will shoot a small buck and be very happy with my season. I think one of the cool things about deer hunting is everyone has an opinion and a little bit different way of doing things. We all enjoy being in the woods, so that right there should be common ground for all of us. My opinion on what will make me happy has changed just this season. Even though I hunted with my dad for about 10 years he wasn't a mentor for the woods. He was a guy that enjoyed hunting camp and would go out and sit on a stump for a couple of hours after breakfast. (I loved hunting camp) I tried to take hunting more seriously than the guys at camp did but I had no idea what I was doing. Since my Dad (retired from hunting) I have learned a lot. It took me a lot of years being in the woods before I killed my first buck. It was a 4pt and I was so proud that I finally did it that I seriously thought about getting it mounted. That was only a few years ago. DMP's were hard to come by and I didn't hunt with a bow. I think it was the following year that I killed another 4 pt on the last day of the season and I started thinking, WOW....20+ years hunting and two deer in a row...I was really excited..It got me excited enough that I purchased a bow, and started practicing, took the course and started bow hunting. My first year bow hunting I saw more deer than I ever have in my life including a few bucks but none were close enough to sling an arrow. This got me even more excited. Last year I harvested a big doe with the bow and that was awesome. Then I was able to get a 5pt with the bow (both posted in last years archery thread) and that was even more awesome. Not only was it the biggest deer I have ever gotten but I got it with a bow!. Then on opening day of rifle last year, at about 7:30 in the morning, I had a big 4 pt come in...He was really close (within bow range) and I decided to let him walk. I sat there and pondered the fact that I just let a deer walk that I would have been jumping up and down in my stand if I had gotten him only a few years ago. I was rewarded for letting that deer walk by shooting the 8pt in my avatar around 4pm that afternoon. When I walked over to that deer that I dropped in its tracks, I looked up and thanked god (and I am not very religious) and I had to keep myself from crying. That deer now hangs on the wall in my family room. It is also a deer that some people on this forum would have let walk and see what he became next year. So far this bow season, I have let a fat momma doe walk twice because she has a fawn with her. I let another doe go because it was a lone deer and I was having a very difficult time judging size (I know some people say it is easy) and I was pretty sure it was the fawn that I had been seeing with the mother. I have seen a 4pt and a 3pt from my stand and even though I didn't get a shot I wouldn't have taken them. I am just getting incredible enjoyment out of seeing them. I am not sure what exactly will make me happy now....I know a lone doe that I can tell is a large deer will get an arrow or .308 round. Any bucks I see will be a game time split second decision for me now....I guess what I am saying is...nobodys opinion is wrong and ideas can change....When I see a thread of a deer kill, I just hope no matter what size that deer is that the person is as excited about it as I am when I get one....

"I like big bucks and I cannot lie. You other brothers can't deny ..." - Sir Mix-A-Lot Shoot whatever you want so long as its legal. I try to be selective (meaning holding out for a 3.5 year old buck or older) but have the luxury of doing so because I see lots of deer. If I saw a few deer a season, I probably wouldn't be selective. Plenty of doe to fill the freezer. And, for what its worth, I don't consider my standard to be "mature bucks" either. A 3.5 has plenty of growing to do - maybe like an older teen in human years. 5 or 6 is mature, but I haven't seen many of those around (only 2-3 on cam on four properties in the last 4 years) so I will settle for something less than truly mature, but will be thrilled if the old man stops by the stand before I kill his younger teenage brother. So why do I hold out, because I can without any real risk of an empty freezer. And for those that shoot something younger, that's awesome! No criticisms from me. Enjoy the hunt and have fun that's what really matters. Don't let others rain on the parade. In fact, my buddy that has yet to shoot a deer will be thrilled with any deer and I will be equally thrilled for him - more so than seeing the great big buck hunter that knocks another stud down. Its all relative.

Just make sure you shoot what is legal. Be safe, have fun and enjoy being outside

We all hunt for different reasons and on different lands. All pay the same price for our tags. And I truthfully believe that "ANY DEER" is a trophy. That being said I like to shoot a nice fat doe every year for the freezer. And hold out for a decent buck. I can't really explain what a a "decent" buck is. But I'll know it when I see him!! And it may even change from year to year. No such thing as a "bad" deer! So shoot whatever you like and enjoy hunting, along with all the wonderful things that go with being in the woods. The greatest reward is just being out there.

Back from camp. No deer down but a couple sightings between 4 of us. Got lucky this morning on our way back to camp around 1130 we walked up on a group of turkeys making their way down the edge of the pond. Wind was blowing like crazy which must be why they didn't see us. We spotted a long beard in the group and I was able to get a shot off. Of course when shot he flopped around in the mud and went farther out into the mud flat. Almost couldn't get him out of there the mud was so deep and sucked ya right in, I almost lost a boot! Lol. I hunt a large farm ( acres in the thousands ) we have rules so I can only shoot certin size bucks. Ok sometimes it seems to be a sliding scale , for many years( in my 29 year there ) I was happy to shoot a 1 1/2. A few years back my little piece of the farm got placed under the rules. So basically in bow even or outside the ears , if I score in bow , I'll wait for bigger in gun ( wait not score .... Lol ). So some years I don't take any bucks , although I can't remember the last one ,most I take a doe and buck. That's more then enough meat for two of us. Coonhunter well said ! Tonight as I parked a young guy was there waiting , he wanted to use our posted land as a route to the field on the next farm to shoot one of the 20 turkeys that were In that field . I said sure even tough I was hopping in a stand near to that spot . We walked In together . I was in my stand , when bam bam and my woods went silent . But I smiled as I knew he got his bird, even if it may have effected my hunt.

I consider myself very fortunate to (finally) own my own piece of heaven.. Going on 14 years of managing my land for mature bucks and constantly striving for that healthy buck to doe ratio. I plant food plots and love learning about and creating deer and wildlife habitat. I attend as many deer management, habitat management seminars as I can to better my land. When I first purchased my land I would see 9 or 10 does to one buck, and that one buck was usually a yearling. After years of harvesting does and letting yearling bucks walk, I have noticed a stronger more intense rut, with bucks on their feet looking for hot does most years during the rut, and now I'll see 1 buck to every 3 to 4 does. I start my bow season filling my freezer buy shooting as many does as I legally can to keep the ratio in check as my neighbors do not harvest does they only hunt for horns. After I harvest does for my freezer I start horn hunting. I have absolutely nothing against any hunter who wishes to shoot the first deer they see to put meat in their freezer, as someone else said if it's legal and they are happy with it then sounds good to me! Hold on, who are you to say what "hunting is about"? Hunting is about different things to different people. Always has been, always will be. There is no standardized "hunting heritage" that anyone needs to adhere to.

I haven't been feeling 100% lately, so I haven't been out as much as I would have liked to be. Things sure do seem to have picked up quite a bit since my last few sits though. As soon as we dried up from the downpours earlier this week, scrapes started opening up everywhere. My cam was getting some good daylight action but again, not much size to any of them. I STILL haven't seen what I would even consider a 2.5 year old this season, but hopefully that'll be changing soon. My last few close encounters weren't anything special, but I always enjoy the close stuff where I can snap a few pics in good light. Spotted this fawn bedded yesterday evening. Made it to within 20yds before she stood up where I could snap a shot. This morning I snuck out for a little while and had another fawn come in as I was still getting set up in my stand. My camera was still in my pack that I just pulled up the tree so no shots of that one. About 9am I spotted a young 6pt working his way directly towards my stand. He was gobbling up hickory nuts all the way in to where he finally got closest 3yds out from the base of my tree. Somehow he never winded me and he never looked up. Just maintained a steady pace through the timber and made his way off unalarmed. It never matters to me how big or how small they are when they do that. That's always exciting to me!

I sat 10 hours yesterday, between two of my best set up's. And saw Zip, Nadda, Nothing! And to add an insult, there were two fresh scrapes made on the way out, that were not there on the way in! We have deer on the property, and a bunch of bucks on trail cam. So lack of deer is not the problem. But my luck so far this year has been terrible!!!! Well now I know why! I was going to pick up a bag of Fireballs last week, and didn't. This coming weekend I have three days to hunt. And I can assure you that my pockets will be lined with Fireballs! At this point, I need anything to swing some luck back into my corner!

Ok guys let's keep it civilized but what makes you wait or not wait for bigger deer. For me I don't wait I fill freezers first and hunt both public and private land that pretty much all will be shot if not by me by someone else. So for that reason I am not picky I try not to shoot fawns but the moment gets me and they end up getting shot to if I have a tag and they taste so good. Someday when I own property ID like to manage it and be able to pass smaller bucks but right now if I have a tag it's dead. Again let's keep civil. Sent from my SM-N920V using Tapatalk

I kill at least one doe fawn each year. I like the tender meat, and I know exactly what size the deer is. I could care less if you find it unacceptable, your opinion really doesnt mean jack squat to me.

my situation is unique like everyone else's so her it is..... I've grown up hunting family farms, including my immediate family's. various stuff still made hunting difficult, but always have been able to pass deer. probably from dad as we both enjoyed sitting and just watching deer. if we shot something the hunt and outing was basically over. I've shot yearling bucks in the past to fill freezer. I've shot a spike on public land just to make some memories with my cousins and brother. usually just held out for the top few bucks known to be in the area though. countless hours watching deer also served as scouting in hindsight. by the time I graduated I had lots of 2.5 yr old racks mounted on a plaque. fast forward to now at 33 I'm one of two primary individuals running an 11,000+ acre QDM co-op and are a part of deer orgs. most of my efforts and any spare vacation time are to help others hunting. here in NY there's always somewhere doe harvest is needed that can also fill my freezer, and a doe fawn just doesn't serve that purpose the same. been to full draw on lots of little bucks this season well within my wheel house, including a stalked stud of a 2.5 year old that far met co-op antler restrictions. I fully think I could've took that deer, but it'd mean a lot more to other hunters on the property. for a bunch of them it's bigger than any buck they've gotten, especially the youth hunters. what I believe to be 3.5+ yrs old is what trips my trigger for certain reasons as a hunter, a local with realistic expectations, and deer manager/bio junky. I've had my heart race this year with encounters coupled with anticipation, then let those deer walk for different reasons. hopefully those deer give other hunter(s) similar experience before they die. doesn't matter if I hike miles and elevation further north or have a different weapon in my hands. recurve bow or beanfield rifle on a pod my shooters for me (buck or doe) don't change much anymore. I still seem to get out of it what I want for me, so for now I've stayed the course.

At my age , I am not waiting . The deer I have seen are at a distance . If one gets close enough I will take the shot .

You guys are killing me with the Fireballs!!! Started many years ago as a joke between a friend and I. "Not seeing much ", " you better eat a Fireball ." We'd text back and forth . I just told him how it's caught on here. His reply, " they're lucky for everything but teeth ." Good luck fellas, I'll be out next Fri.

First off ill just say, i love being in the outdoors and witnessing the woods wake up and shut down at the beginning and end of each day. That being said we manage our property in 8P along with many of my neighbors, for healthier deer, better buck to doe numbers, more mature bucks, food plots, sanctuaries etc.. Ive shot plenty of deer, from tiny to quite big in my 16 years of hunting and just dont feel the urge to harvest any younger deer anymore. Now i will never judge anyone for what they harvest ever, we all have different lives and different circumstances, pay taxes and what not, most of us work and or have worked for a living to provide for our families and i completely respect that. But I do my best to pattern and gain history with deer and let my wife try and harvest the first deer or two of the season before myself. I dont ever want to shoot a deer and not consume it, i cant justify shooting a deer to not eat it or make use of it in any way unless the animal went to the less fortunate. If my wife doesnt harvest anything 1/2 way thru season, i will take any good size doe i have a tag for. Buck criteria wise for me he has to be atleast 3.5 no matter where i hunt, 4.5yrs+ on our managed properties in 8P. and 3.5+ on my family farm in 8F(not so managed) I would much rather let the animal grow(hence the name) and attempt a harvest when they mature..

So my one of my hunting buddies asked how my $300 dollar fan was doing this weekend. I thought that was funny, but I am still hoping to prove this does something... Saturday 10/22 In the stand and set up a little before 6:30 am. Temp about 40. Just as I was deciding I was very glad I came out when everyone else didn't go it started pooring and the wind picked up. It was blowing so hard my tree umbrella did very little. My coat did a good job keeping me dry but my pants not so much. I took the Ozonics down before 7:30 because I didn't want to ruin it and packed it away in my back pack. Stuck it out until 10am and didn't even see a squirrel until 10 minutes before I headed out. It was the most miserable morning I can remember spending in the woods. Sunday 10/23 I was excited for the morning hunt. I figured after more than 24 hours of crap weather the deer would have to be moving. I was in the stand and set up again before 6:30. Temp about 45. The wind was blowing but not super hard yet and seemed steady. I have another hunter closer to me than at any other time this year sitting in the oak stand across the ravine about 300-400 yds away. About 7:30 I have a small 3 pt come up out of the ravine behind me moving very quickly and go directly behind my stand and quickly disappear. Had this been a deer I wanted to shoot I don't think I could have grabbed my bow, stopped him and made a shot even though he was well within range. He came in directly up wind and I figured he winded the hunter on the opposite ridge and was vacating the area. About 10 min later I got a text that the hunter was out of the woods, that he got called into work furthering my belief the little buck was pushed. The ozonics played no roll in this siting. By 10 am the wind was blowing so hard that I decided sitting there was becoming dangerous and I didn't want a tree to fall on me. So I packed up and headed out. I have never had that happen to me before with wind so hard I didn't feel safe. Overall a pretty crappy hunting weekend.

Turkey wasn't the intended target of the day. But after a few miles of up and down steep hills I was ready to put something down. We were literally 80 yards from the camp and came upon the turkeys. Shot this bucklast year and found a swacker in his skull,found out later that a guy arrowed him chasing a doe but he turned at the last minute and hit him in the skull.The swacker just missed his brain cavity he seemed fine a month later.

Ya know, the problem with threads like this, and the dumb ass that spewed his BS in another thread, is people forget the true heritage of hunting and being a hunter. It wasn't about the biggest rack or the score. It was about feeding your family! You killed game to put food on the table. What would you do if there were no grocery stores? To pass judgment on someone who kills wild game for food and not the score the animal gets is kind of....Well,,,,Stupid!

Me any where the first two weeks of Nov. If I had to pick 7 days is go with the 4th through the 11th. The 4 is our wedding anniversary, she knows I'll take her out in Jan. But then I'm only working 4 days in the month of Nov.

The worst thing they can do is say NO... I asked an aquanitance to day for permission to hunt ducks..He politely said no and then told me that he had granted permission in the past and the priveledge was abused.. Possibly that is true...Possibly he just doesn't want anybody else on his land, but he feels he needs a reason so he doesn't look like a selfish asshole. It doesn't matter..he owns the land and he pays the taxes.

I try to wait on a big buck until I've at least had a few good sits in November. If it's coming down to the end of archery I will shoot a 1.5 unless I have a nice doe or two in the freezer. I do this to kill and eat deer Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Crazy late night recovery. Finally had a NW wind at my property after work tonight, snuck into my stand@ 410 pm. Was watching several does and 2 little skippers feeding in my standing soybean field just after 6pm, when I noticed this buck standing ten yards into the woods just off the edge of the bean field. He was studying the field what seemed like an eternity, then he finally committed to enter, where he ran into my 100 grain muzzy. I run a ton of cameras, but I've never seen this buck before. I'm guessing he's gone on an excursion from his normal home range. Bonus buck for me. He's definitely the largest bodied deer I've taken on my property. I'm anxious to age his jaw bone and see how old he is. Had to hang a block in a tree at edge of a step ravine and use 150 ft of rope and my tractor, but I finally got him up, buy myself.
