  1. 11/12/16 will be a day to remember . Me and my brother took the last 10 days off from work. We hunted everyday sun up to sun down. Passed many small bucks but no shooters. In fact the last 3 days we didn't see a deer between us. Keep in mind we never left the woods (all day sits). Needles to say we saw the time dwindling . ... but we said we would grind it out. I shot my buck at 7:45am and he shot his at 8am. We each got the BBD text. My buck came in chasing a smaller 8pt. he grunted hard and snorted at the buck. he came in at 35 yards and my arrow found the mark. Never saw anything like it. His gunt lasted 10-15 seconds . as I was sitting letting a few hrs passI had a 9pt 4pt and spike come by. My brother let out a few bleats and had this 164 inch gross 10pt buck walk out of a swamp right into 15yards. He droped in sight. It all happens so fast. Hang in there guys and gals if you are getting frustrated .

  2. Well I had 3 bucks together at 80 yards, grunted and the bigger one peeled off and walked towards me to investigate, big mistake.

  3. My buddy just got this 8 right at sunrise (left) on the same property I bagged this 8 point (right) 2 weeks prior. Broome county does produce some good deer. Very slow season otherwise. Haven't seen much deer at all.

  4. Shot an eight point with the xbow this morning. He was following two doe that were in heat. After the shot he went about 60 yards and then lights out. Here are the pictures......

  5. 15 min before quitting time. I'm standing watching the bedding area to my left and the swamp at my rear. I hear a bull in a China shop come barreling down the hill directly in front of me. Thought is was those damn squirrels again until he grunted. Drew while he was on the move. As soon as he got on the right side of my stand I gave him a baaah and prayed he would stop. As soon as he stopped, I let the brand new Matthews Z3 rip and shot right down through him. So happy to christen the new bow. Shot my doe first week with my old Martin Jaguar. I still don't now what he was chasing. I never saw any does. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  6. First deer with a crossbow. I was in a ladder stand in a row of trees looking onto the a large field. Heard crashing directly behind me at about 9:30 a.m. Got my safety off and waited, but nothing ever came through. About 30 minutes later, I spot a buck exiting the trees about 40 yards to my left. Looks like a medium-sized 4+ pointer. I get ready. The buck is making a wide arc in front of me. I wait till it crossed the trail running straight in front of me, just past a large bush which gives me the only cover I have at this point. Distance of about 32 yards. The bolt hits in the lung kill zone, but is a bit high and does not penetrate fully. The deer immediately drops and tries to get up on its front legs, but can't. I spined him. Best I can figure, the bolt deflected off of a rib up into his spine. So he is just lounging there looking upat me with a bolt sticking out of his side. I immediately recock the crossbow and reload. I had to wait a few seconds until he turned his body to give me shot. He gives me an angled front shot. Penetrates the side of chest and exits out his lung. Immediately starts making noises and kicking his front leg. 30 seconds later it was over. Except for moving in a circle, he never took a stop past where he was initially shot. Am glad i didn't have to track him. Feel bad he had to suffer a bit more than he should have, but it was still pretty quick all in all. Field dressing him, we noticed only one lung was damaged; suspect the second shot hit a major artery. Is only a five pointer. Only one brow tine, and it looks like one tine got broken off. Estimated dressed weight of 100+ pounds. Sorry about the ninja smurf outfit; I don't photograph well.

  7. Yesterday morning killed this doe. Pushed by a big buck into 12 yards.......he was probably bummed when I plugged his girl friend. She's a nice adult doe, dressed at 102lbs. It was another fast & furious morning!

  8. Confirmed! Big Boy Lives. It's clearer in the video, but the crab claw arrangement on his left side is unmistakable, as is the high, but not super wide rack, as seen from front r back. Suddenly all seems well with the world. Typically nocturnal. This is a minimum 6 year old animal. In the video he is heading right for my house. I wonder if he is sneaking down the creek between me and the neighbors? Must put a cam in it.

  9. 8 does seen this morning, 8 point circling the first ones dead body for a half hour. Shot these right behind my house, the nap sling blade did a number on them. I shot the first doe at 15 yards, heart shot she didn't go far. I watched her go down and about 15 minutes later the 3 other deer with her went right toward her body. As that happened a big 8 point came barreling out of the thick creek side and started guarding her body. I watched him from about 80 yards and tried bleating/grunting but he would not leave. Shortly after the 3 deer that were with my first doe cam back to 15 yards, i shot the next biggest one and she ran off, died 25 yards from the first one with a double lung shot. The 8 point did not move still!. i had to get down to be at work at 11 so i climbed down slowly and moved toward him with my grunt call from down wind. Managed to get to 40 yards but wasn't comfortable with the shot due to branches so i let him go back into the brush. All of this happened on a small area i got access to right behind my house (11 acres). Now i can offer the landowner and neighbors some fresh venison and maybe get access to a couple other small pieces of property.

  12. Good luck to everyone today. Hope to see some good pics throughout the day. Slept in and watching football today. Had to hang the deer, because no one would take a 7pm drop off. If anyone knows of good processors within 30 miles of Canastota, please let me know. New to NY and drove my last deer to Syracuse. I will say I miss the processor we had in PA. They stayed open till 9pm. They had coffee and drinks, the butchers' wives ran a grill/concession stand, and it was a great place for all the hunters to shoot the shit and grab a burger. This forum is the closest I have to that camaraderie. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  16. Harvested Nov 10th at 0845, he was trailing a doe by 50 yds. She must have been close to being ready to be bred. Gave me a twenty yard broad side shot.

  18. Back in 3s... lost a stare down with a doe on the walk in. Drew back on her at 25 yards but shot never presented from the ground. Access is the toughest part about this spot. Can't seem to get in without deer already being there Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  21. Last one I buit quite a few years ago I put a 2"x6" on each side of the limbs and bolted them together with threaded rod 3/8" they never moved in 10 years used 2" x 6" planks to stand on also. wear a safety harness and or put a railing all the way around, they get Slippery in the rain and snow.

  23. A good friend ( forum member ) and his wife invited the wife and I over for some authentic Indian food. Northern region style which we weren't aware eastern , southern and western were different in ingredients and amount of heat used. Chicken tikka, chicken roll ups ( don't know exact name ) butter chicken, lamb curry , flatbread , daal ( spiced lentils ) , rice with lamb and rice pudding. We're stuffed as dinner was excellent. 24. I won't let it happen again. I was focused on my view through the scope. I have been bow hunting a few years but this is my first time with the crossbow. Funny..I thought it would be easier..if I had my bow I would have had a deer down today..

Had another 6pt, spike and finally the 8 come by while in the stand. Shot him at 40yds, he went 75. And this was the first day of my 2 week vacation. Sent from my XT1080 using Tapatalk

  32. Never seen it happen. With a safety line/prusik hitch you are connected from the ground to the stand and vice versa. There really is no other way to do it.......why in God's name would you want to climb up, step onto the stand, turn around, strap on a safety belt to the tree THEN hook up? Oh yea, then when it's time to head back to Mahogany Ridge you have to reverse the procedure; possibly in very dark conditions while stiff/cold/excited/scared or even elated. I'll pass......... To the OP; it's really quite simple. Have your buds all donate a little cash and make up some life lines. Then they all need to just buy a good harness with their own carbiner attached. Then you guys are all hooked up from bottom to top and then down. Slick as snot............

  35. IMO trim the front up and throw up a double buddy stand if it'll fit in the nook. Lots of room equal to a platform you want to build. I think that would be the cats pajamas.

  39. Through the years I have seen and read many articles where various gun writers would set up experiments and shoot at targets through a maze of simulated brush conditions trying to find an answer to the brush buster question. From what results I have seen there is no caliber or bullet type that will reliably fly true to the target after hitting any brush type material. Hitting brush or anything like it upsets the flight and causes bad wobble of the projectile. Once that happens predictability goes out the window. After conducting these experiments the writers all recommended precision shooting through an opening in the brush instead of trying to bust through it because from what they saw there was no such thing as a true brush buster. On a personal note on a moose hunt I fired a shot at a distance of about 75 yards with a 7MM Rem Mag at a nice bull, I took a heart lung shot as he was going through some fairly thick brush. At the shot he turned and started away from me in the opposite direction which provided me with an open shot at his neck which I took and it dropped him on the spot. When we took off his hide we found the first shot had hit some brush and keyholed, it was found just under the skin almost in perfect condition. For me it is best to wait for a open shot if possible if that does not happen try to find that good opening in the brush that offers a clear bullet path and have a gun that you are confident in so you can pull it off. 40. Got in late this morning but I don't think there was any harm done. I have a couple hours this am and then a little time this afternoon. Any body have any recipes for first year bow tag soup? Should be tender considering first year right?

  41. First I hope you get your deer. Second I have hit deer that did the mule kick, flipped over and made noise. These shots (2) have left me with no deer. I believe I hit bone, I did find both arrows that were bent, the deer bled like your deer. Again I hope you find him and good luck. Look around the shot site for that arrow, it will give you many clues. GL

  43. As some of you may remember I posted on here to get your opinion on adopting a rescue dog for waterfowl hunting. As expected I got mixed advice on the matter but decided to go for it anyway. She passed her gun shyness test, got her land retrieving down after that water and boat retrieving took less than a day each. Fast forward four months from the day I adopted her and add in many hours spent training and the verdict is finally in. My girl is officially a hunter. This afternoon was the real world test and I'd say she passed with flying colors. She was a little jumpy and whiny between flights but nothing I didn't expect, it was after all her first hunt. About 30 minutes into the hunt we had a flock of 6 geese come in and give me a passing shot at about 40 yards, missed twice, had an IC in for decoying birds. Surprisingly they doubled back and came in to land and I folded one and sent the dog. I was a little worried how she'd handle a 15 lb flapping goose as her first bird but after getting wing slapped once she grabbed it and brought it back flawlessly. Couldn't be happier with her and goes to show a little commitment and work goes a long way and you don't always have to spend 1500 bucks on a pup for a hunting dog.

  46. Well...I had the best day in stand today I can remember. 15 deer including 5 bucks one being a beautiful shooter 8. I can't remember ever seeing that many deer in one day. Made a rookie crossbow mistake on a big doe out of a group of 5. Squeezed the trigger and whack bang...yup..crossbow limbs expanded right into the tree my stand is throwing my shot way off and bolt stuck right in a tree about 10 ft in front of me..lighted knock glowing away. Won't make that mistake again. Looking through scope not paying attention to clearance. Hope tomorrow is just as good...
