  5. This all started last year during the 2015 hunting season Decided to start a backlog journal to catch my hunting experiences up to now 33 years old and never hunted until this season. No one in my family has ever been into hunting so it never really appealed to me. in the last 10 years I've always thought I may enjoy hunting but never had time to take the safety course. Recently my 5 year old has been so interested in hunting that I decided I needed to learn so he could have his dad be his mentor even though one of my closest friends is an avid hunter. My friend weather he knew it or not was going to mentor me. I managed to get a safety course finished the day before opening of gun and bought a crossbow so I could practice quietly for a few days. I got accurate enough that I decided to go out sunday am of opening weekend. Spent every morning and afternoon I could sitting quietly after that. Saw lots of doe. 11 walked through one day but I didn't have the range. Even had a small doe walk almost right up to me on two separate occasions but didn't feel right about shooting such small deer. Finally my friend tells me I have to sight in the shotgun I bought, practice and get up off the ground in a stand. Okay so he sights the 12 gauge in for me. I take a shot at a target at 50yards and hit close enough that I'm comfortable. I don't really like firing the gun so I leave it at that. One practice shot. Please don't judge me or my friend for the lack of practice. I get in a stand on my property with only a small area that I can hunt legally but I feel comfortable with. I begin using a new trick of rattling fake antlers and using calls. 10 minutes before sunset I wipe my nose and sniffle from the sinus infection and bronchitis I happened to get and decide to climb down when I realized my calling was working because all I saw were white tails running. I stop, call a doe noise and they all stop. I waited 5 minutes and did it again and they started back. One nice doe makes it on my property. She looks up at me, kicks her front hooves at the ground a few time. I stayed very still at the ready. She put her head down and turned. I shoot. I do all the safe things you're supposed to do next and go to the spot where she was. No blood, no fur and dark now. I call my friend and get a flashlight. Found tiny bit of blood 25 or so ft away and start tracking. not much blood but I did find a little frag of bone so I knew I must of hit her somewhere decent. Finally found her with the help of my friend and come to find out it was a high hit through the lung so she had to fill with blood before letting much out. 2nd bullet ever shot besides a .22. My 5 year old came out to the barn while it was hanging and saw it after warning him it was bloody and dead. His reaction surprised me. "awww cool....This is a nice deer daddy. Nice size. good job." what 5 year old is so calm and collected like this. Family liked how it taste so I went back out for Sunday the last day for gun. No rattling but just calling because I figure with all this talk about no deer around I would just try for another doe. As I'm about to leave my stand and call it a morning I hear something in the woods so I hang out and call like a doe. I see antlers for the first time in my life as a hunter. Heart pumps very differently than when I shot the doe and this thing is still deep in the woods I can barely even see him. He heads away so I call the best I can. He turns and I finally get to hear how a buck really grunts. He cautiously heads towards me. Shots go off way in the distance. A large doe comes booking across the field from where the shots fired and right at me in my stand. I call again to stop her. She stands 5 yards from the tree I'm in and the buck now sees her. All of a sudden my sounds were very real to him. He head straight at me and I have to shoot before he gets too too close. He jumps into the brush and only makes it maybe 20 yards away. Shot through the shoulder a little and got a lung. Third bullet ever shot. My friend and his dad come over to help me out. This time my 5 year old comes out to see the entire gutting process. Again very calm and a little excited he said because this one had horns and again was a good size. I gutted both deer myself due to the responsibility I felt in killing these two animals. With the coaching of my friend of course. Apparently this is a big buck. They told me I need to mount it so I guess I will even though that is not really what I did this for. That is also why you won't see me in a picture with the animal. I did it for my son who has such an interest in hunting and to have good quality meat for my family. Wegmans is right down the street but this meet came from our backyard. How's that for a carbon footprint. Thanks for reading

  7. Fifty years ago in the southern zone, only conservation officers and other police officers could legally shoot dogs chasing deer. A citizen could legally shoot dogs that were attacking his livestock, but not because they were running deer. I know it occurred, but the people who did it were in violation of the law the same as they are today and would be subject to criminal AND civil litigation. Years ago it was legal for a citizen to shoot dogs running deer in the northern zone, but to my knowledge it has never been legal in the southern zone, regardless of what one's inbred grandfather or simple minded uncle used to do.

  11. I went to the end of the upper lane-way next to a small WR plot and not too far from the corner stand I had the two young bucks sniff my ladder rungs... Before light I did some rattling and doe bleats...Because of the snow I could make out close objects and hadn't spooked anything on the way in. I was hoping the sound ,with the wind would carry up to the sanctuary and out to the green farmer fields at 7am, opening here was at 7:23 I did another series...A bit later I see movement between me and the green field 180 yrds away I looked like a small doe and she was limping very badly...I checked my watch and it was 7:25...I couldn't see the wound but the front limping had her bobbing up and down quite profoundly. She was on my trail to the gully stand which was taking her farther away...I pulled up not having time to range and guessed with the snow on the ground her to be 100-110 yrds out....I aimed a bit high when she stopped giving me just her front shoulder...Well I'll be using the range finder more, for she was 78 yards when she dropped hard and swung around at the shot limping up the way she came. I lost her in a group of trees and waited and waited for her to come out the other side...just as I was lowering my gun thinking she went straight away behind those trees to the pines..she popped out. She hit the trail straight to me and I readied my aim against the tree...The trail was straight away and when she was to get to the intersecting trail 20 yrds out it would be a continuance to me or a sharp turn to my right or left...One giving me a shot the other not....She stopped 36 yrds out and had the slightest turn to the rt...I had my bead in the crease along her neck to the shoulder ..Knowing at this angle I had a good chance on the nerve bundle and or heart...She dropped like a rock right on the trail. I was a bit surprised when I got to her..I was expecting some huge wound ,from that limp she had..It turns out it was an ankle cut..I think from a broad head and it was slightly swollen and a bit infected...but not bad.....I'm still glad I dropped her..Not what I would have taken I really wanted one of those big doe...but she won't have coyotes get her and the meat will be great....

  13. First appointment with this buck I was snort wheezed at. Second appointment I had a doe and fawn under my stand on my way to it and had to wait till they left. I felt regret that I should have taken the doe for the meat. I was 5 minutes into the hunt and would have been home early. Saw nothing else that day. However this afternoons appointment he showed up on time, actually a little earlier than I thought. As I walked to the stand I smelled him. I knew he was there somewhere. I even asked live from the woods what to do. grunt bleat etc. I grunted three times then bleated once. Nothing. A little while later a doe ran along the road to the right of my stand. I'm in a small hunting area surrounded by farm fields a few houses and roads. A small buck followed. I'm not shooting at the road but they went into the thick where the buck smell was coming from. Hour later about 12 doe and fawns came out and the doe were grazing and the fawns were goofing off. At one point a fawn chased another fawn right at me but a little down wind. The fawn sniffed me out and alerted others and half of them left. I decided to take my farthest shot yet at the largest doe left. Probably a little less than 100 yards. She's in the sight. Safety off. Finger to the trigger and SNAP. I heard a twig under my stand snap. I look down to the left and through the mesh of my seat I see this buck. I take my finger off the trigger. Swing the gun towards him smoothly and let him walk 5 then 10 yards and all I have is the texas heart shot but I'm not going there. He turns right to the remaining doe who surprisingly didn't see me move to him and finger on the trigger , shoot. He ran in the direction he was headed and tripped, flipped and ended up facing me. My light field found it's way through a lung, his heart and the other lung. Happy to be able to share this with you all and overwhelmed by all the likes and kind congrats. dressed

  18. Wasn't really asking what to shoot. Was asking what others thought. There is a rhyme or reason to hunting. I have 3 deer in my freezer. Was just wondering what other people thought and there opinion on killing doe! I mean if I didn't ask or nobody asked anything u wouldn't have this forum to post ur opinion. Was just trying to get so different opinions is all!

  19. Just because the DEC believes your area your has a population that's too high, doesn't mean that's the case for your property. Only YOU can decide. Micromanage! The DEC issues 4 DMP's each year for my area (8F). They are "idiots" to believe that my property has an excess of deer!! If I didnt care, I would fill all my tags. But, I own property and have a vested interest, so I haven't shot a doe in years! Finally saw a decent amount of deer this year, about 50/50 doe to buck ratio. Only you can decide. My son, daughter , and myself hunt my 28 acres (8F). Between bow, gun, muzzleloader/crossbow, and DMP's, the DEC issues 23 tags for us. WTF... Just because the DEC issues a tag for your area/property doesn't mean you HAVE to fill it. YOU know your property, better than the DEC! Sent from my VS980 4G using Tapatalk

Just so you get a tatste if your own medicine.

  25. Your correlations aren't even remotely related. I don't need hunting to survive, neither do you. Hunting is a passion that just so happens to also provide me with the reward of venison. The experience is more the reason I hunt. If it weren't for the experience we would all be better off going to the store and buying meat if you're looking at it merely as a price point, not to mention the time spent. My venison probably costs me more than filet mignon if I work up all of my gear, gas, time, tags. In another thread you are complaining that the selective hunters are wiping out the deer population where you hunt, I suggest you sit in a quiet place and truly think about what you're saying... You want to fill every doe tag and also use your buck tag for does and yet it's not you're fault the deer are in decline? It's the guy passing on 1-2yr old bucks that's wiping out the herd? If that's seriously your argument then I'm done because you truly are delusional... Sent from my XT1080 using Tapatalk

  28. I want to shoot does. I will kill a buck occasionally if meat is needed by my extended family. However, killing does protects my crops, improves the odds of healthy forest generation, stops the selective browsing that causes invasives to dominate native vegetation on my property, and helps improve habitat for a host of other wildlife species. The resistance to killing does is an atavism left over from a time when deer were scarce. Anyone living in an area with too many deer is a true conservationist when they kill does. Get some tags. Kill some does, eat well, and feel good about it.
    3 points
  29. Just kill the deer you want to kill. There is no rhyme or reason to it. Stop asking people on a web forum what you should shoot. You will get brain washed! Hunt for you, not social media. Hunting isn't about how many Twitter followers you get, or about how many likes to get. It's about hunting.

  31. If you are in a zone where they give out 4 DMP's, then you should take out every antlerless deer you can when the opportunities arise. If you can not use the meat, donate it to help feed the homeless. Most of the big processors will accept such donations. Those hunters who save their DMP's, in such zones, are not doing anyone else much good. When you punch your DMP's in those zones, you are benefiting the local deer herd, feeding people some excellent food, preventing car-deer collisions, reducing crop and landscaping damage, and saving the next generation of forest.
    3 points
  32. This brings up a question. Not to hijack the thread, but this is actually relevant. Why apply for a DMP/s if you don't plan to use it/them? All you do by doing that is make it harder for those of us that would shoot does to get a DMP in some areas.
    3 points
  33. The same doe you pass on today might get hit by a car tomorrow. Harvest what you choose. Those DMP's are offered for a reason.

  34. Very close attention, in fact. And I actually know a bit about what those positions and selections mean. They're all good for the country, and pure poison for the Democrats. I personally couldn't be happier. I think it's going to be a long time before we see another Socialist administration in DC.

  35. Only you know the deer pop in your area. We have shot a lot of doe on one specific property over the past 4 years. This year the doe pop is noticeably down. We need to lay off for a year or two there. That said, I saw more big bucks searching this year than ever before on that property.

  37. The last couple weeks my father in law started getting a buck on cam regularly. He offered for me to hunt there. Nobody hunts his property. He has a tree stand just so he can go sit in it and read and watch wildlife. He's not a hunter either. Second appointment I had a doe and fawn under my stand on my way to it and had to wait till they left. I felt regret that I should have taken the doe for the meat. 38. During the summer of 2016 I bought a bow and practiced so much my arms hurt and had to switch to practicing every other day. I got to the point of shooting groups within 4" at 40 yards and decided to bow hunt. I took the bow safety class. I bought a lifetime license for me and my four year old. Bow hunting I saw a lot but it was frustrating to say the least. Barely grazed a doe which showed up on trail cam a few days later she was fine but I was a little shaken up. I also missed my target buck at around 30 yards broadside. I used deer search once. I haven't gotten a deer with the bow yet but spent twice as much time in the stand 2016 compared to 2015. My son drew me a picture as some may recall of my missed buck.

  46. It has been a really crazy season but Sunday (11/27) I was about to pull into the public lot at noon to move a stand when 2 does nearly jumped out in front of my truck... I knew where they were going so I parked, grabbed my gun and jacket and cut them off all in less than 30 seconds. I was braced and ready when they walked right into me I shot at 5 yards brosdside 3 shots and then the same for her partner (another doe) in the same spots. They run off I run up on a downed one I thought was dead but she pops up...tracked all day in snow...lost them both: I went back Monday morning and followed crows to some gut piles but no new leads. Went out again mid morning Tuesday (11/29) and followed crows across the property with a rechecked gun/choke tube. As I was heading back toward the truck I ducked into some pines to check out a new stand location. At 11:45 I picked out legs at 80-90...I closed the distance thru the pines, braced for a 40 yd slightly away shot. Leading up to the shot she was behaving normally and showed no signs of prior injury until I skinned her which revealed she was one of Sunday's lost does. Sunday I shot her point blank on both shoulders and an abdomen (should have been liver) shot, none penetrated more than a half inch! This was Tuesday's single 40 yard shot with a cleaned barrel reset choke tube: Meat in the freezer and a loss redeemed/recovered. This is the 2nd time in 4 seasons I harvested a deer I had wounded with bad gun/ammo a few days prior. Im grateful (as is my wife and kids) for the monkey off my back.
