  1. Success! Three doe came across from the other side of the gully and stopped to look back at forty yds. Dropped her in her tracks! Guess that's a wrap on 2016. Now for a long uphill drag.

  2. Good Morning, I was lucky enough to take this buck yesterday morning while hunting with my Dad. I was watching a hay lot that has been a good feeding spot lately with the snow on the ground. I got to the spot around 6:45, and at 7:30, this guy appeared out about 80 yards. It was a bit foggy where I was, and so all I could see was the silhouette, and I was not sure how big of a buck he was. I brought up my CVA Wolf, and squeezed off the shot. The shot broke his back, and when I got to him, he had crawled into the woodline, and at which point I finished him off. Dad and I got him out, and he is now off to be cut up. I will most likely do a Euro mount, as I personally prefer that to a full mount. His rack has 9 points, and measures 17" inside, and from the top of the skull to the tallest tine, is 11.5". A great way to end the season. He is my best buck to date, and my second deer with the muzzleloader. Enjoy.

  4. Sat at a spot last night with hopes of filling a doe tag. Around 4 pm had 3 deer move through but too far off. Then moments later had a solo deer off in the distance work in my direction to pop out at 30 yards through some thick stuff. I saw rack and my heart started thumping. I got to my feet and while waiting for a moment to draw I got hit hard with buck fever! He started working to within 20. He was facing me head on. Ha legs shaking and I thought I was gonna pass out. I was in mid draw and he picked me off. I was stuck. Between being cold hungry and shaking from the fever i was a hot mess. I couldn't control my legs shaking and he bolted! I grunted and stopped him around 30 yards. I finished my draw out the pin on his body and let it rip. Shot went higher than I wanted and I heard a CRACK! He bolted and the arrow fell out in 15 yards and that's all I saw of him. Thought I got 6" of penetration from my perspective in the tree. Instantly I thought I hit shoulder from the sound and reaction. Called my dad and buddy and said I just hit the shoulder of a buck. My heart must have been 200 beats a minute. I waited 30 seconds and got to the ground. I sat at the base of the tree till dark and then went to the impact spot. Immediately I saw blood in snow. I said man muscle blood? Then I followed blood to the arrow. I love rage hypodermics but the hypo shaft that screws into the insert broke off! Wth! Never had that happen, but the arrow shaft was covered in blood! I left the arrow and in the snow I saw the prints and kept following the spray paint of blood. I said maybe I got lucky. I looked up and saw body! Couldn't believe it. He went all of 50 yards. Didn't hear a crash between the snow and me crying on the inside. He was dead in about 4 seconds which I feel great about. I was so pumped with emotions. Biggest NY deer for me and first tag that was used in the late season. Upon field dressing the broadhead shaft broke while cracking a far side rib. Blood trail was insane. Gonna enjoy this one for a while! Threw him in the truck, grabbed a pick , filled out my tag proudly and drove to my dads house to share the story. Thanks for reading boys! 9. not just shooting. Twice this year i had people scope me. I don't understand why hunters don't buy bino's. for the most part you get larger field of magnified vision with higher mag than a scope. Hell I carry a cheap pair of 10x that are small, light weight and work great.

  10. The Mermaid's son stopped by today...His dad is getting along in years and has decided to get rid of some of his guns.. He showed me a beautiful S&W model 27 that his dad had given him...The M 27 was Smith's " Cadillac" of .357 revolvers faultless in fit and finish It is in pristine condition, with beautiful deep blued finish and a 5" barrel , just a slight cylinder line and virtually no holster wear. I DROOLED......

  12. So my dad dropped me off today. He retires in a week and will be spending the fall/winter in florida . He won't be hunting anymore , I made a point to thank him for 25 years as my hunting partner and mentor . I had to keep it short and sweet ,I know it was emotional for me and i could tell it as for him a little bit. We never really express feelings like that ,never have.

  15. Well my 2016 deer hunting season ended with a whimper instead of a bang. I "think" I saw one deer 200 yards away close to the road, but could not locate in my range finder, so I think it may have been a deermirage. Sat in the cold for a total of about 7 hours. It was a good test of my "very cold" gear. My head and face held up surprisingly well. Feet and body did OK. My weak spot was my hands. I don't like to wear bulky gloves. I had on thin neoprene gloves, hand warmers in my pockets and a muff warmer. As long as I kept my hands in my pockets or muff with the hand warmers, I was OK. When the sun came out in the afternoon, although only about 20 degrees, there were a ton of orange-chested birds swooping around eating berries and/or wild grapes. The field was much more alive than you would expect on such a cold day. Well, tomorrow I will round up the cameras and seat cushions, and put the UTV in storage. As a Cubs fan in my youth, all i can say is "wait till next year".

  17. yea i've been into it hard... lol.... dusted off half a dozen 45 lb plates earlier in the year to check my deer scale calibration. most they've moved since summer. bar is still laying on the basement floor mat. i think the treadmill sees use. all the clothes on it seem to be staying leaner than i. couple more hoodies and it might blow out a shock though and need repairs. effort's coming but no promises. someone should start a fitness activity thread similar to the first shots bow thread.

  19. Luckily there is barely a breeze cause it's cold! Sitting above a gully in 8N this morning. Nothing moving but lots of tracks from last night. Including some bear tracks. Only a little time left on the year, then I think I'll hibernate myself until April.

  21. Challenge wise nothing beats bow hunting and spending time with my friends. Lots of laughs to accompany the intensity that is the rut or nailing a buck due to patterning and scouting. At one point this bow season I had a mature buck walk across me on a trail while walking in to the stand in the darkness. He glided across the trail like a ghost and I could have poked him with my bow if I extended my arms out. He never knew I was there - so close my second thought after "so cool!" was "oh my god I may need to defend myself if he turns this way". Talk about an adrenaline dump. 22. Older does have longer skeletal structures - including facial and body. They too get back and belly sag. Not that hard to determine alpha either by behavior. And your stat on 25% is generalized because the real factor is weight - threshold of 60-65lbs. Areas with ag, food, and good soil CEC without overcarrying capacity will have a higher % of fawns bred. 23. i would be having a 1 sided conversation with that person and it would not be a friendly one at that! completely uncalled for...ever.. under ANY circumstance, and for absolutely NO reason. ! as far as the original post content, again absolutely no excuse whatsoever for that to happen. Once again another hunter that is extremely careless and even more so extremely lucky that a person was not hit. people need to wake up and remember SAFETY is your #1 priority when hunting, there is not a deer walking the planet that is worth risking someones life for. with the technology out there today saying you didn't know there was a house there is not a valid excuse! know your area, know your target and know whats beyond your target as not following that statement cause affect you for the remainder of your life as well as the entire family of the victim. this is not hollywood, nor a video game, there are no retakes, do overs, resets, pauses, once you pull the trigger its done so you better be sure what and where your shooting.

  24. Ridiculous and no excuse.as my grandfather taught me."either on the ground or up high know ur target and whats beyond it.i dont care if its a 20pt buck.dont shoot if you know its not in a safe directon, period."agreed TC!

  27. That's just sad. This is why during the gun season for deer I always set up where I am shooting down at my target. If I could hunt from a tree stand I would all the time. This is why boots on the ground scouting is so important! Not to just locate deer, but to know your surroundings and if any homes, buildings, or anything are in the area you might hit, and where they are.

  29. This morning I killed a NT 8 pointer in East Aurora. I watched him for over an hour before I could kill him as property lines are close...... The shot was at about 35 yards and he only went about 20 before piling up. Although he was on the right side of the line at the shot, I went down and skidded him over 50 yards so there were no problems although anyway you slice it, fresh snow tells the tale. I new he had a funky rack of course because I'd been watching him so long but after I looked a little closer, I saw some skank around the back of his neck. He was missing a big area of hair and had green goop frozen to his remaining hair in the area. Really gross looking! I talked to a few friends and even got a hold of the local EnCon officer. My buddies were spooked by it but the DEC guy said skin it and see what your eyes and nose tell you. I gutted and dragged him back to the truck and brought him home. After much thought, I decided I'd donate him through the local butcher shop. I figured I'd let them tell me what they thought.....they said no sweat, we will take it! I just didn't like the looks of it; the green pussy frozen matter, hairless patches and lack of an usable flesh wound from fighting or a bullet/arrow soured me. Ive never had to do that before and I hope I never do again.

  30. Well. 19th gun season ended for me with a first of no deer. Had no real opportunity's on any big guys even during bow. Barely was seeing any doe. As of Sunday night me and the kids were up all night barfing with a nasty stomach bug. Wife came home early from work and the snow was really coming down, she sat down next to me and said " didn't you get a big buck a couple years ago during a snow storm ?". Really sweetheart !?! How could she say that. So I decided to take a hot shower and if I felt up to it, bundle my butt up and hit the stand... Well, I did. Now I will tell you there was a few times I thought I was gonna have a rearend eruption and after I shot I almost puked a few times, but this unlucky buck came out into the cut corn @ 125yrds. Hit em and he dropped like a rock. Not my biggest but a decent buck and he's got bad Genetics anyways.. was 2.5 and only a 6, 17" wide. We have a couple bucks on the farm I wanted dead and he was on the list. Very happy to fill at least one tag this year !!

  41. I try to avoid taking alpha doe, especially in areas where I know bucks will routinely visit in rut phases. I try to do the goldilocks approach - not young not old...just right, to avoid that. If there is no middle age, I will purposely shoot the yearling. Only time an alpha needs to go IMO is herd reduction of massive proportions (meaning you have several alphas on your ground) or she's flat out busting your setups. I will avoid otherwise. I've seen what it can do to patterns and corresponding buck movements. No thanks. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  43. I like to pass the mature does and go for the 1 1/2 - 2 1/2 year old deer. This year I took a nice old doe, but she was completely alone with no others behind her. The way I see it, your taking out a good parent if you take out an old doe. Im not looking to do population control so I like to have a doe that is spitting out 2 fawn a year. I also think the younger ones taste better so Ill enjoy them more.

  44. it started at 4:00 pm Thanksgiving day... Supper for me didn't happen until 9:00pm. first deer the smaller one was taken at about 120 yards. it was a great shot. the deer expired in five seconds. that right there was what its all about clean kill and smoke. I hurried as with beans still in the field i might see another one. quickly i retrieved the doe, and with her safely behind my ground blind i jumped back into the blind. fifteen minutes later three stepped out. It seemed to be a magnet because the first of the three that came out walked right over to where i shot the first. she covered the 80 yards rather quickly . well this is where the story comes to an end , she gave me the pose when she turned to look at thee other two deer in the back of the field. well she dropped on the spot. second shot second clean kill ... Happy Thanksgiving to all espically my wife who puts up with me and my insanity. thompson triumph barnes mz expznders 80 mesured grains of blackhorn and winchester 209 primers
