  1. So the g/f and I have been together for 7.5 years. We talked about marriage and both said we would marry each other. But never made anything official. Last night I got both of her parents blessing's. This morning I asked her to marry me. She said yes and was on the phone with her mother almost before I got the ring on her finger.

  2. Well I added another gun to my collection.. A factory 35 Whelen 7600 carbine. I've wanted one of these for years and seeing buckmaster7600s collection just made me want one even more. This is my third 7600 and by far my favorite gun in my collection. It came with a synthetic stock but I threw some walnut on it as soon as I got it home. I'm really looking forward to shooting it. I also have a new Remington V3 walnut coming in the next couple weeks. Anyone have any reloading experience with the 35 Whelen or any experience shooting the cartridge? I'm looking at making up a good load for next season. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  13. A fur hat or mount would be pretty cool. I sent out 6 red fox pelts to Moyles minkery to get tanned a few years ago. Gave one to my brothers, my buddy and kept a couple for myself. Neat wall hangers. If you don't know how to skin them look it up on Youtube You'll need to pick up some wire fox and coyote stretchers for drying process. You could make wooden ones if you desire too. Don't buy a tail stripper. Look up how to make one out of wood, it's easy.

  14. Wolc... First off did you just learn the term "selfish elitism"? You've thrown it in every post lately. Secondly, you are justifying why you should be able to jam your weapon into a current weapons' season because "YOU" want it so "YOU" can kill more deer. How are you any different than a guy not wanting it in archery season? You too are being selfish. But it's nice to see your true colors coming out, you hide behind your Bible most of the time but you're apparently riled up enough to belittle other people on their beliefs, even going as far as saying Jesus would be for full inclusion!? Seriously man? I'm against inclusion but I'm not crusading a forum telling you that you're a selfish prick because you don't agree with me. You filled all but 2 of your tags this year, quit whining. You do realize that you're whining more than most guys who didn't get a deer during archery at all right? That just shows how you don't enjoy the time spent in the woods, you just want to walk in and kill something because God forbid you don't fill a tag. We can't change the season every time some whiner wants to make it easier for himself. So stop your holy crusade, if you want to make decisions in your life based on the Bible, fine with me, where you start to really annoy me is when you try to force it down people's throat and use crazy correlations (like Jesus wants full inclusion). So go ahead, follow this up with a response about the Bible and how you'll pray for me, and you're right and everyone who disagrees is wrong, that seems to be your niche. 15. For me it's about the ultimate competition... I have always been very competitive... sports, martial arts etc. The experience of testing myself against something or someone in a challenge of strength, wit, and skill. What better than the challenge of man vs. beast where the opponent has the home field advantage, is faster, stronger, has keener senses and is a master at surviving under extreme and dangerous conditions? Then throw in the experience of being out in nature and the serenity of the outdoors... and I'm thinking the better question is "Why not?"

  16. One only has to look at the primitive human cultures that still exist in this world today in wild places to know that hunting is in our genes and we descend from and are natural born predators. Hunting fills a primal urge and need that is still present to varying degrees in humans today. Humans are a lot like the hunting dog breeds they once bred to help them be successful hunters. Remove those breeds from the hunt for a few generations and their desire and ability begins to wane. Some hunting breeds taken over by the pet trade have lost almost all hunting ability and drive. Humans for the most part have suffered the same fate as they became removed from rural lifestyles and more urbanized they do not have to get their hands dirty for their sanitized food sources available at their nearest market. In a nutshell if a person is brought up in a hunting culture they are more apt to be involved, removed from such a culture over time most will quit participating. For me the natural born predator instinct and drive for the hunt still exists strong, a lot of it because of the way I was brought up which provided me opportunity. Al

  17. Vermont added crossbows for hunters over 55 years old. I'm against it, though I haven't seen any direct impact. Yet. I'm not concerned about changing anyone else's opinion on that matter, but I have MY reasons wanting bow season to stay the same. I hate change in general. Bow season IS my "special time". It's special because of the time of year and the weather, and because the deer on a more natural pattern. That makes them easier for me to see them, and kill them. So I'm against anything that would change that. I don't have to worry so much about road hunters, trespassers, deer drives, and all the traffic in and out of the woods that I associate with gun/ML seasons. When somebody get a crossbow, the first thing I hear from them is "Man, you wouldn't believe how FAR I can shoot with this thing. It's so EASY." That's not what bow hunting is about for me. You can call me elitist, but bow hunting is about getting close, undetected, making a clean shot and recovery. Plenty of people can do those same things with a Xbow, but plenty will shoot too far, wound deer, and hurt the sport. My friends and I talk about getting lucky during rifle season. We look at taking a mature doe or a buck with a bow as both skill and luck. Every clean kill with a stick and string feels like a trophy. Many serious hunters in VT leave the state after bow season to hunt where there is more deer, or bigger woods. If it wasn't for the peace and quiet of bow season, I would join them. I'm not saying a Xbow is the same as a rifle, shotgun, or ML, but it isn't truly a bow either. That goes both ways. It isn't as challenging as a vertical bow, and it isn't as effective as a firearm. I'm not writing this in regards to NY in particular. Just some thoughts from VT, where we don't have nearly as much land, or nearly as many deer, overall. I just want my chance to hunt deer that are not overly pressured, in the peace and quiet, while the leaves change and fall. If Xbows effect that, then I am against them.

  19. This makes me laugh...I wish we had a "dog chasing it's tail " emoticon. I was against them until I actually picked one up...I have hunted with one for 3 years now..I've taken 2 deer. Do I want full inclusion No, why? Because the DEC so screwed it up when they allowed a insignificant read and sign piece of paper to allow anyone to use one. It should always been a bow course requirement. But they had a need to "test" the waters so had to treat it as a "gun " type of weapon to do so quickly. Personally I think some of these brain storms develop at the local watering hole in Albany well past 5pm. Want to know what the real effect will be...no deer and by gun season ,some seriously pizzed off gun hunters. Why? Because the deer are learning folks. So are the illegal hunters(want to talk St Lawrence county? The DEC did) ..like it or not The deer have started to go nocturnal way earlier than they ever have. It's been a progression, the more people hitting the woods with bow in hand the later they hit travel routes and the earlier they leave feeding to bed. They are changing...The local Farmer who has guys hunting talked about it...no more flagging alerts, less snorting being heard. So I started talking to guys around different areas and the guys from camp...They didn't realize it until asked but, yes no flagging...guys I know that do drives said the same. They bolt without raising their tails in alert. Now I don't participate in drives but a bright white tail makes for a faster acquired target on a brown landscape...Nearly every one around here ,even those that got deer, said they saw fewer in legal hours. You won't catch a significant # of bow hunters doing stalks. YES, some do but not a significant number...with a crossbow...one is much more mobile..no drawing and acquiring the proper pin...it's raise and look through the scope...Like it or not it IS easier...and there you have it more guys "sneaking " around the woods ,into safety zones looking for that shot. Want to ask me how many deer I walked within feet of while leaving the woods. Not seeing them and they not moving until I was past them...I can tell you, many more then ever in past years. Lets talk about your beloved buck...You think all these guys wanting cross bow in bow season are looking for "Just a deer" NO!, lets try just for a second, to be honest. They want a GOOD BUCK. So considering doe are smarter than buck..yes even your prized older ones...what do you think will be shot off? Young ones as well..It wasn't doe walking around sniffing my ladder rungs in day light this season it was 5 and 6pt's. So deer will be shot and early ,then the woods will settle a bit the rest of bow,but damage done,as it were. So early gun or cross bow inclusion...really makes no difference the deer have already got the memo and started changing some time ago. So inclusion will just shift what everyone is beoutching about. It will be DEC about doe numbers and hunters about buck and no deer sightings...OH wait...That sounds familiar...hhhmmmmm

  21. At a very young age, my Dad would take me hunting for small game and deer hunts. The seed was planted and the roots grew deep. The excitement of deer hunting and the love for the outdoors has just grown and grown. The thrill of being out in the woods knowing a nice buck could come into range at anytime, along with the beautiful surroundings that I tend to hunt in, and all the other wildlife I see..... is just about the best thing in the world to me. I enjoy the challenge too, so I maximize my time out there during the season, and I have the gear to keep me out all day, in most weather. When there is snow on the ground during deer season, the desire to be out there intensifies and the cold temps only mean the deer will be up feeding during daylight hours and I want to be out there as much as possible to increase my odds. You can't get em' if your not out there and you never know what you'll see in the woods. The romance of the hunt, new adventures on solo hunts or with life long buddies and memories of hunts gone by keep me wanting more. Now in my mid 50's, I find it difficult to work on some of those really nice days during deer season. I save 2 weeks to spend out there, but sure wish I had 2 months! I suppose if I had that much time off to hunt I might stay in where it's dry on a few days. I'm sure I would need to rest. But until then, I'll head out the door in the dark with my rain gear on, my backpack loaded with gear to get me through the hunt, doing what I love to do.

  23. sounds like Tom's got it handled on the key things to get the deer through the winter the best way possible and keep the doe population the most productive it can be. that's all you can do really. the DEC system is quite a lagging one and always has them playing catch up to actual hunter field observations. I really hope they get the AVID citizen science stuff going and work on fine tuning it to have info on natural browse pressure. They should push the bowhunter log more too. hunters have to use a little common sense though. Just because you have a tag doesn't necessarily mean that's exactly how many deer should be taken. if you think there's barely any deer around it's probably not a good idea to shoot the baby makers. like wise if you and those in the area are seeing lots of deer but DEC says there's not much around, that doesn't mean what you saw must have been a dream.

  27. I just don't get it. I bow hunt by myself sometimes, and sometimes with friends. One of my friends bought a crossbow last year and used it this year. Last year he got a buck with his vertical and this year he shot a doe with his crossbow. Same result for me, I got the pleasure of helping out on a 1/2 mile drag. I just don't worry about what others hunt with. Good hunters will continue to get the majority of the nice bucks whether it is with bow, cross bow, or gun. Hunting spots will continue to get harder to find and fewer hunters will go out. They can change the rules, seasons, limits, or whatever the DEC wants, but it will not change the fact that fewer hunters are in the woods every year.

  33. I too have been bowhunting longer than some members here have been alive. Killed my first bow deer with a recurve in 1984. Since then I've killed a LOT of deer with a bow. I hunted with a bow this year and will continue to do so as long as my damaged shoulders will allow me to. My grandson will kill his first deer with a compound bow. But seeing some posts here, I guess I am a lazy slob, because I have killed deer and hunt sometimes with a crossbow. But ya know what? I don't give a rats patootie what anyone thinks! I don't hunt with a crossbow because it's easy, more accurate or any number of other things people are spewing about them. I do it because I want to, it's legal and it's fun! If they pass full inclusion fine. If they keep it the way it is now, that's fine too. I do feel strongly about having to have the archery education course to hunt with crossbow. I will still kill deer in bow season with or without a crossbow, but it will be "my choice"!! Not some cry baby thinking a slob like me might kill your damned deer! If you are so worried about us slobs killing your deer, then step up your game and learn a few new hunting skills! And don't worry about what someone else is doing. Just hunt!

  34. The older I get the less I will fight the weather. I am in a position where I can hunt whenever I want and a few choices all over the state to hunt. Everyday of the season. That allows for more freedom for sure. Like Doc said we all have pretty much the same drive and enjoyment but now it is a drive of having to take the biggest smartest brute in the area I hunt and the rest turn into video harvests! It all changes with Age!

  38. I'll add that one of the best parts is just being in THEIR element and enjoying all the sights and sounds of nature. Maybe it's the ocasional black squirrel, the red tail hawk swooping through the trees, the red squirrel chasing the gray squirrel, the crazy rutting activity, getting to see your first (happened to me this past fall) black bear from the tree stand or even just enjoying the heck out of watching the black capped chickadee dancing from branch to branch. Those are the things at the top of my list...........

  40. Time to start scooping up all those antlers I couldn't get my hands on during hunting season! This one still had some flesh on the skull, but looked like he'd been there a while. I didn't look for the rest of the skeleton with all the snow in the goldenrod, but I'm sure it'll turn up. If I had to guess, I'd say this skull was from back in archery season just judging by the critter wear and condition. Anyhow, it was nice to see some bone sticking out of the snow once again. Hopefully this year will be ALOT beter than last!
