  1. A coon hunt years ago me and my hunting partner go in to my treeing dogs and find them barking treed at the base of a huge 60 foot spruce tree. All the other trees around it were hardwoods with no leaves where any treed Coon could be easily spotted but those old Coons are smart and this Coon climbed up into the big spruce thick with branches and needles where he could not be seen. I shined the tree with my spotlight for about a half hour and finally saw one of the Coon's eye shine at the very top of the tree for a split second so I knew for sure he was up there but no part of him could be seen to take a shot. Now back in those days a good big prime Coon hide was bringing $50.00 so there was no way I was going to give this Coon a pass. When I was a young guy I could climb trees like a monkey so that was my plan, climb up to a place where I could see the coon for a good shot and take him out. Took my coat off and with my S&W K22 revolver in a shoulder holster and a 4 cell mag lite flashlight up the tree I went. The three was so thick with branches that it was pretty easy climbing but those thick branches also concealed the Coon from my view. I had to go right to the very top and when I was about 6 feet below the Coon I could see him well enough for a shot. Now this was a pretty tricky situation, I was sitting on a branch with my legs wrapped around the tree trunk, the mag light in my left hand and the S&W in my right hand. It was hard to be steady and I drew down on the Coon and squeezed off a shot. The instant the gun fired the Coon bailed and where does he land? right on my shoulders!! So here I am screaming like a woman with my legs wrapped around that tree beating the Hell out of the Coon with my Mag Lite. My hunting partner said it was a sight to behold, from the ground it looked like Darth Vader battling an unseen opponent with a light saber. Well I finally knocked that guy off of me and he fell to the ground where the dogs finished him off but that was pretty hairy deal for a while with that growling Coon breathing down my neck. The dumb chances one takes when they are young and foolish, potentially getting yourself killed for a lousy coon! Al

  6. Took my twin boys to my buddy's property today and picked up a few pheasant to let my Brittany have some fun(thanks cynthiafu for putting my "puppy" back in the forefront of my mind). I have not hunted him since last year and that was only for a day or two. He ripped a back toenail after the first 20 minutes but never missed a beat during the next two hours. He showed me a few flash points and then kicked both birds perfectly for me as my boys watched. He didn't retrieve them for me but he did make sure they weren't going anywhere after they hit the deck. Such a fun day. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  7. Always interesting to see behavior at the zip-tied licking branch, especially when a younger buck shows dominance over an older buck that is licking the branch. In this case, I would guess it is a 1.5 year old and a 2.5 year old...for my neck of the woods. I would have posted the photo/vid of the interaction on this site, but I have maxed out my megabyte upload limit here. But you can see it off site at this link: If it is slow or doesn't work... See the vid on my facebook page. Link below:

  13. nothing at all. But when we talk legislation on this forum the reason some are in favor for shortening seasons, reducing dmp's, implementing 1 buck rules and ARs etc. is because they don't want neighbors filling all the tags they have right now and have no legal recourse to stop it. I'm not saying it's my opinion, but there is a mindset that education can only go so far and some members here wonder why other members would ever want to change anything and I'm simply providing a reason why. I have brown its down neighbors on 2 sides. I'd love to see some ARs because it seems our mature buck population keeps dwindling. Is that selfish? of course, but I'm just being honest. We take a doe and maybe a buck or 2 every year and practice QDM, but if the neighbors don't it's all for nothing. It's the same reason many here don't want longer gun seasons. Save some freaking deer. Deer aren't over populated in most hunting woods. They're overpopulated in parks and no-hunting zones. This leads to frustrated drivers, gardeners and insurance companies and also leads to overhunting and scarce sightings in other areas.

  14. I have never had an issue with my scopes gathering enough light anywhere NEAR legal shooting times, and that includes hunting in PA where the shooting hours are 1/2 hour before and 1/2 hour after sunrise & sunset. I have always been amazed at how bright and clear my Leupold fixed 4X scopes are in low light, even comparing them to my 8 x 42 Leica binoculars, which are not exactly bargain basement glass.

  15. Here is another dilly and again it happened on a Coon hunt. I had my youngest son along that night and he was around 16 years old then. My dogs struck a track on the edge of a large section of forest and took it in deep, I would say we went back close to a mile before they made tree. When we got to them they had two big boar coons in clear view treed in two side by side in little white pine trees. So I got the loaded magazine of my old Remington Nylon 77 auto 22 LR coon gun out of my pocket and loaded it up in the rifle and handed it to my son, I held the spotlight and let him pop both coons out. One at a time they both hit the ground like a sack of potatoes and the dogs were on them immediately to finish them. So after all the excitement was over I put those two big boys in the large game bag of my old Carhart coon hunter's coat and we headed back to the truck. I will tell you carrying two big 20 plus pound coons on your back trudging through a swamp in the middle of night with a dog on a leash yanking you around is tiring. Well about half way back I start to feel something stirring and moving around in my game bag and all of a sudden all Hell breaks loose. One of those big coons comes back to life and is in full battle mode fighting his dead companion in my coat. Thinking about it now and standing back taking the perspective of a spectator who by chance would happen to come upon that scene would have been crazy to say the least. My big fear when it comes to live coons is rabies, my dogs all have protective shots but I do not and the last thing I want to have happen is getting bit by a coon and have to go through a rabies protocol. Here I am running around jumping up and down yelling and screaming, first I have to get my rifle which is slinged crossway across my chest off so I can get my coat off. The two hounds hear that coon squalling and they are chasing me around barking up a storm. I get the rifle off and hand it to my son and get that coat off and throw it on the ground. Of course the hounds on now piled on to my coat trying to get at the coon dragging and mashing it in the mud. I almost took the rifle and shot the coat LOL but thought the better of that and find a good stout club. My son pulls the dogs off my coat and I then proceed stomp and beat my coat until I am sure that coon is dead. What a freaking deal!! When the escapade was over we had a heck of a laugh but it was a long cold wet walk back to the truck. The trials and tribulations of coon hunting. Al

  17. One last check after replacing coil, wire plug, injector for just one cylinder . Swap the new components with a different cylinder and see if the problem stays on number 8 . If it stays on cylinder 8 ,that will pretty much tell you its a mechanical failure on #8 and not electrical.

  19. Possible it is a bad computer, test fuel filter and presser? Otherwise you covered injector, wire (Hope you did them all.) and plugs. I would do an injection test and possibly a compression test. Injection test will tell if the computer is firing the injector, compression will tell you if you have mechanical issues.

  21. With the light rain was no chance of getting on the metal roof to finish up that part of the job so with ice on and perch present and a light rain ziva and I headed out to fish. Lots of water on the ice so we headed back to the last hole from yesterday on the weed bed. Didn't take long and the perch were there, had 5-10 minute waits between the slobs but when they swam in they bit good. Once the downpour started the sunnys and gills showed up and there was so much water pouring in the holes you couldn't sight fish anymore so we packed up and walked back..well more like I walked and ziva rode the sled. 25. I can honestly say, having one of these beautiful displays in my possession, that they are absolutely breath taking in workmanship! The detail, design and quality wood is outstanding. If anyone out there is looking to show off or display their hard earned turkey trophies, this is the way to do it! Once you have one of these in your hands, you will see for yourself! Believe me, you will not be disappointed!

  26. So True...This all goes back to piss poor Mgmt by our great DEC. They keep throwing seasons and tags when what the herd really needs is less seasons and less tags. Just wait till they find the next case of CWD in this state and the sharpshooting starts on areas that already have a hurting deer population. Thats a fix all dont ya know?

  27. This is the very scope I have on my Winchester 1300 for turkey and for deer hunting before I got a rifle. The Leupold 1x4 with the extra heavy reticle works very nicely in fading light as well.

  31. Do a compression test. Try to rule out mechanical failure first. If it is, you may just need to do the heads. Your 07 has (or at least my 07 Tahoe) has cylinder deactivation, meaning four cylinders drop out when engine power is not required. It does this by redirecting oil to certain lifters to cause the valves to stay open hence, dropping out the cylinder. Compression test may tell you to look at this closer at this system. Also.... You should be using an AC Delco (original equipment) oil filter as they have a modified oil bypass circuit that can handle the cylinder deactivation system. Using any other brand could starve part of your engine of pressurized oil. Ask me how I know! Also, there is a second oil filter on your vehicle (if equipped with cylinder deactivation). It is located under the passenger side valve cover. I have not had to mess with mine yet (157,000 miles on it) but if I recall it is serviceable.

  34. The 1X4 Leupold is a great little compromise scope for someone looking to stay light and compact but yet have a magnification up to 4 power. Your assumption of the 20 mm objective from lens in low light is correct, it will not be as bright as a scope with a larger diameter objective. That being said NY law for big game states there is no shooting before sunrise or after sunset, a 20 mm objective lens on a good quality scope still lets in plenty enough light to get a good sight picture prior to the sun actually setting. I checked sighting ability of my little 2.5X compact several times this past season with actual sunset and time by my watch and would have had no problem seeing well enough to take a shot during legal shooting times had one been available. 38. when it comes to whitetailed deer and their acknowledged range.... NY state has the 4th highest amount of acreage open to the public for hunting them. we're 10th in the nation for antlerless deer harvested per square mile. 7th in the nation for buck harvest per square mile. we lead the nation with the highest % of yearling buck harvest that our the easiest deer to harvest. we don't need longer seasons. if you need a longer season and more time to hunt then you had an unusual hardship keeping you from the woods, didn't care to make more time for hunting, or need to be under the wing of a more experienced hunter to help get the job done. this utilized opportunity is bitter sweet in my opinion as our hunting satisfaction and anticipation is based on quantity and not quality. our state managed predator population as a whole is increasing and we currently have deer in the best situation given we've got nothing like EHD, CWD, or blue tongue to contend with. this target rich environment can't last forever and highest yearling buck take in the nation down right sucks from perspectives of both a quality hunting experience and whitetail ecology .....but nevermind we're doing fine. the way we're going is a like a cruise ship on the best body of water with a slow leak and no bilge pump. there's more than enough hands on board to fix the situation but everybody's too worried about enjoying their own vacation to bother what's best for everybody as a whole to keep the vacation going.

  41. Brownings have a high cutoff. Supposedly the new ones are more usable with rechargeables. Not really worth it IMO if you will only run them in winter. Cams can be finicky with rechargeables, but later models are better. I run rechargeables in my Spartans that have external or solar panels to ensure the external batteries are used first. Generally speaking if its a 6v setup and has separate banks, you can run them. Browning doesn't run the 6v setup in the Strike Force.
