Plan "B " if the perch don't co-operate, we will try for some lakers.. Gonna be chilly for awhile...I'm dressing like Nanook of the North going out to harpoon some seals...

  3. I just heard on the news another tear-jerker news story on how a family of "immigrants" were facing potential deportation. More "Fake news"! No, there are no immigrants being deported. They are illegal aliens. Lets get it right ........ They are illegal aliens. These are people who willingly and knowingly decided to violate the existing laws of the USA. They did not earn the right to be here, as lawful immigrants do, but simply chose to disregard the legitimately established laws of our country. Their very first act when they came here was to knowingly and without respect for this country, violate the country's laws providing clear insight into how they hold the sanctity of our country's legal system in complete contempt. They decided to make a mockery of all those legal immigrants who went through all the legal channels and hoops that are required for full citizenship and legal acceptance into our society. When talking about these people, lets not waste sympathy on them when they couldn't see fit to abide by the lawful requirements of citizenship here. And when these people are finally caught, deportation is indeed the proper path for them until they can see fit to abide by the laws of our land and follow lawful procedures. Until that day let's stop calling them immigrants and use the proper terminology, "Illegal aliens". Because that's exactly what they are.

  6. Grow, I had a wise old man that I once worked with that had a great quote he used to say. "Never argue with the ignorant, they'll only bring you down to their level and beat you with experience." With that said, I will never try to have a debate with you about AR as you will never change your stance no matter what information is presented to you. If you really truly believe that there are a reasonable number of 4 and 6 point 3.5 year old deer and older out there than I really feel sorry for you...

  7. So last weekend I was out on our back deck at daybreak and swore I heard a bunch of gobbling way back over the hill behind our property. There were so many crows cawwing that I couldnt be sure. Yesterday, I was out on the deck firing up the grill to make dinner and I heard a loud gobble, so I turned and looked in the sheep pasture out back and sure enough, 3 big gobblers out there hammering away. I didnt even know we had any turkeys around, as I havent seen any till now. I took a quick pic through the binos.

  10. S&S Archery Pro Shop out in Springville, NY had a one day sale Saturday from 9am till 5pm. Most bow companies were there and you got to try several bows at their range. Being a Mathew's owner for many years now, I wanted to try out their new bow for 2017, the Halon, specifically. Long story short, I loved the bow and put a deposit down and it will be delivered in about 2 1/2 weeks. This bow comes in a 5", 6" or a 7" brace height. I elected to get the 6" version. They also make the Halon in a 30" or a 32"ATA, but decided on the 32" instead. Now along with the new bow, a new rest, arrows, site and quiver, this will surely cost me a shiny nickel or two!!! Was seriously thinking about up-grading after 12 years with my Mathews Switchback model, so it was time. And besides they offered $100.00 off!!! All excited about this coming season now!!!

  12. I have seen a half dozen or so of these deer over 36 years of deer hunting. I believe this was the intention of the 3" rule. I haven't seen a fawn buck with spikes over the 3" mark though.

  13. I apologize for the poor pictures. No matter how I angled it I couldn't get the wire framed to look as good in the picture as it did in person. This is a full sized whitetail mount I forged up. The antlers started out as 1-1/8" square stock. The pieces are welded together. The originals are upright. Wish I could figure this crap out...lol We actually auctioned it off at the banquet this last Saturday.

  14. Only reason I chose the 32" was it would be a little less arrow pinch due to the lesser angle at full draw. Also my last bow was the same size, so I am familiar with that length. Yes, the bow weight of 60# would be 50-60 range. At 62 years old decided to drop down a few pounds in bow drawing weight. Going from 67-68lbs. down to 60lbs. Will be a little easier to draw back smoothly.

  15. Thanks guys! I can't draw for chit, but once I start seeing things in 3D, shapes start fitting together at different depths if that makes any sense. No laser printers here, but my plan is to incorporate some of my photography stuff into this stuff as I get some more experience and learn some new techniques. Obviously this was just a simple trial project to see how things worked and to see if I could get the hang of it. Now I want to know how to do it all, and I want to know now,lol

  16. Man, what a great work day...just starting to dry up a bit and sunny..42 ,just warm enough to loose the jacket. Dropped a few bigger trees, and small ones with standing dead ash. What a pain those turned out to be. Brush pile fence is now head high.Tomorrow I take out the leaf blower on the new plot areas. What a difference in soils! I have one of my very first plots in this area the soils . are dark and are neutral too sweet in smell, perfect. The new areas are reddish grey with a bit of yellow under tone and just as acid smelling as it comes. Almost nose tingling. I know I'll have a lot of rocks under that leaf litter to deal with. I'm up to 22 bags of lime and it will take most of it for just this area to grow anything this year. I've waited many years to do this ,standing back and envisioning it has me pretty happy with the potential. So much work, like I needed more, but love it!. It needs to happen to counter somerecentand potentially new changes

  18. That is what I am going with. I have been researching the snot out of every tractor in the 40 - 50 hp range for months. I priced out a JD, Kubota, Kioti and Case IH. JD and Kubota had some nice features on them, but the price tag to go with them, and then some if you ask me. Case IH was too pricey for the same features. The Kioti had basically the same, if not a little better lift capacity, PTO power, etc as the comparable other brands, not as many bells and whistles, but a great price tag. We are picking up the DK4510HS soon.

  19. Under the proposed rules for 8N, just down the road from our farm, this yearling would be legal But this 3 1/2 wouldnt be Before you guys say anything, both of these deer have most likely set foot in 8N, and we have deer that meet these categories every single year. Its not an oddity or anything like that.

  22. UPDATE: We are so happy to say that 9 beautiful, healthy babies were born today! 5 little girls and 4 little boys. Thought I would share a pic of 5 of them. They are the most adorable little puppies I have ever seen! Mom is doing great, and everything went well. I will also be notifying everyone on our waiting list of their arrival.

  28. It has to do with the rut. Basically, with a better age structure, combined with a buck to doe ratio that is close to 1:1, 1:2, 1:3 the main rut becomes shorter, and the smaller, later ruts become less frequent. In turn, fawning times are not as spread out in the spring, and deer are at a better age/size for dealing with a harsh winter, etc.
    2 points
  29. So if they make the rule 4 pt on 1 side or better OR wider than 16" inside spread???

  30. See that's the mentality I'll never understand. Why would someone choose to shoot that buck with 1.5 inch points, even if they had a DMP? The intent of DMP's is to take female deer to help with population control, not so someone can choose to shoot a micro buck just to say they shot a buck, or because "I'm going to shoot it cause it's legal to". I just don't get it.

  31. They base it on a percentage that they figure arent reported. Its kind of a guessing game, Which is why mandatory reporting of all tags (filled or unfilled) should be put in place. No report, no tags the next season.

  36. Probably not these ones. I have a flock down at the farm that I have been tracking since last summer. I know the roosting area and the typical paths they are taking away from it, so that will be where we go that weekend. Unfortunately I dont have permission for the land behind our place yet. Ill be working on that in the weeks to come.

  37. If you're hunting from a ground blind you would want something with a shorter axle to axle. Axle to axle refers to the distance between the cam centers. There are advantages to shorter axle to axle like fitting better in confined spaces but that comes at a price of shot forgiveness. There are 2 things that really impact how "forgiving" a bow is. One is the axle to axle the other is the brace height. If a bow is more forgiving it means if your form isn't perfect or at the last millisecond you tweak your arm the bow will still shoot reasonable well (not far from the spot you aimed). I have 2 Bowtech Tributes one was bought in 2007 1 year old that I retired to my wife and the other was bought in 2012. I have yet to find a bow that shoots as nice. It is plenty accurate out to 60 yards and having 50-60 limbs I can back it all the way down for my wife and I shoot it maxed out at 62lbs. I'm not sure if a bow will shoot faster maxed out but they say they are more accurate maxed out almost like making the the bow 1 piece.

  39. With NYC pistol permit - premises only - you can shoot at any gun range in NYC only. That's it. Not LI or Westchester. You can take your Pistol hunting during gun season, only if you have a "hunter authorization" card. I got my HA card in 1 PP after showing them my pistol permit & NY hunting tag for last season. Was very easy to get. But I've been told that if you try to get HA without the hunting tag, forget about it. Hope this helps.

  40. i would say the kid needs to learn to properly identify his target, what if he didn't have a antler tag? would he of called it in or just gotten someone else to tag it. KNOW what your shooting at before you pull the trigger or release the string because once its done there is no do over. It doesn't matter if its a monetary fine or loss of a buck tag, If there is a penalty the honest people will turn it in, others will either take their chances getting it out of the woods or leave it to rot in the woods. I have been hunting the PA antler restriction since its inception, my zone was the 4 pts. to a side which is now 3 up (3 up on the main beam not counting brow tines) 1.5 yo bucks are still getting killed, yes we have more 2.5+ bucks and we have some real dandy's BUT they also the first 2 years of AR about decimated the herd with herd reduction. What we have now is far more posted land and far more self management for protecting the doe population. we can not compare ny and pa as the hunter numbers and the overall mentality is far different between the states. whether or not the state goes to AR makes no difference to me, hasn't in pa nor would it here. We already have an AR in ny in some respect, as there was in pa. if you want herd health it requires herd balance to habitat carrying capacity, with the amount of posted land its an almost impossible goal because you can not shoot deer that you can not get to and the state can not force those land owners to open their land to hunting. people should just hunt how they like and should be allowed to shoot what is legal, they paid for their tag not me. like I said it doesn't matter to me if there are AR or not its not going to change what I shoot. from personal experience I can say there is probably not a more volatile subject among hunters than AR, its been the cause of more heated debates, posted land, poaching, and just plain dissension among hunters. If you want to pass up bucks to give them a chance to make it another year there is no problem with doing so, will some of those get shot later? maybe,, but one things for sure if you follow the attitude of well if I don't someone else will only 1 thing is true when YOU shoot it its chances of making it another year just ended. if you let that deer walk he may just make it another year or more. Survival skills of deer 2.5 + go up as they age, 1.5 and 2.5 bucks can be easy to kill, 3.5 they get tougher, the jump they make from 3.5 to 4.5 is unreal and when your hunting 4.5+ bucks you better be on your A game!

  41. I think that huge 4 point would never have grown another point to make it legal in one of the " trophy units ". Just has inferior genetics. I'm sure a deer biologist would pull the trigger himself to take it out of the gene pool to prevent more of the same future bucks. This is a good example of age harvest vs antler size.

  46. Easy to change weight as Chas described. Most will argue that a bow is most efficient at its highest weight. That means a 60lb bow maxed out will shoot the same arrow faster that a 70lb bow set at 60. My chrono didn't necessarily agree with that theory on all bows but regardless it's best to have a lighter bow that you shoot well than a heavy bow that is difficult for you. 50-60 is plenty and gives you the option to increase weight from 50 up as you get your form down. IMO.
