  2. Two of my kids had invited me to dinner but had to take rain dates . I had already told my youngest son that I would come down and help out with the home that he and his wife bought down near Honeoye . I spent several hours up and down a ladder cleaning the gutters out . They were loaded with crap . After I got most of the junk out , I cleaned the shingle grit with my old wet-dry Sears Vaccuum cleaner . I had that fastened to the ladder and dropped it from at least 10 feet and it still kept working . I refinished and stained a 70 year old picnic table and benches and took them down to the property . So , I got a pretty good workout and I am tired !

  5. Another rescue. On way to pack up pop up blind and set 2 cams I noticed this guy trying to cross the road. Woman working in yard was curious to what I was doing. Gave me a box to put him in. No visible water so I drove him to a swamp mere feet off the road I knew I could let him go in. Umm, while getting a box for me I noticed her garbage can. Hoping these aren't human bones in it. Felt a little safer with the .40 stuffed in the waistband lol. Turtle managed to climb out of box on the short drive and decided to hop into an open pocket of my golf bag. Heard him scurrying around. Too funny when I popped the trunk. Painted ? No good orange on bottom. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  6. Many years ago, when lead shot was the only option readily available and turkey seasons were first initiated in New York, some bureaucrat decided that the range of legal shot sizes for turkey hunting should be #2 to #8.... The reasoning was probably because shot larger than #2 was considered more dangerous than smaller shot in case of an accidental shooting, and shot smaller than #8 was considered too small to be effective on turkeys...It was an arbitrary decision at that time and simply never has been changed to allow for some of the modern shotshell technologies.

  11. I'd put the buck in the trail cam pic at a bit ahead of average for June 8th. Some bucks start early and finish up early. Others come on strong at the end of July/early August. The tips of the tines closest to the beam and beams themselves are the last to finish growth...as long as they appear "bulby" they are still growing. I've been seeing a bunch of bucks around...only one was beginning to bulb into G3's but most older bucks that I've seen are forked at the G2's. Here's one from last year that is pretty average on his growth timeline. All dates are correct. Interestingly, this was during last year's drought. Hope he blows up this year...no pics of him since January.

  13. I haven't tried TSS yet, and probably won't anytime soon, mainly because I don't reaload. If they ever become available commercially at a somewhat reasonable price, I might give it a try. Also, wondering what it would be like trying to pick #9 pellets out of a turkey's breast if the shot goes a little low? Right now, I'm able to take the thump from a 12 gauge shooting 3 1/2" HS, and I'm getting great patterns at 50 yards. I spent a lot of time getting my guns where I want them, so starting all over isn't high on my agenda. But who knows, maybe getting a 20 or 28 gauge down the road when I have more free time and experimenting with TSS might be a retirement project?

  26. Nick , my youngest son , Is the one I helped . He didn't ask me . I just knew that with buying his 1st home that he was overwhelmed with work that had to be done before moving into the house . The gutters were something that I could handle while he did other necessary chores . The shingles had been replaced a little over a year ago and the gutter should have been cleaned or replaced at that time . They were loaded with grit from the previous roof . If I needed help doing something at home , Nick would be the one I could call on to help . I got more satisfaction out of helping him than going to dinner . It was a good Father's Day .

  27. When I got married, there were no game seasons open in September, and I was years away of even THINKING of hunting elk, moose or caribou, so I figured that Sept 4 would be a safe date... Then about 20 years later, I started going on big game hunts in Alaska, the Rocky mountains and northern Canada, many of which occur in September.. So it happened that on several of my wedding anniversaries, I was in the wilderness somewhere in North America instead of at home celebrating with my wife.. Do you suppose that could be ONE of the reasons I'm no longer married ?......<<sigh>>..... Oh WELL.....<<sheepish grin>>....

  28. Both our daughters rent apartments where electric is included in the rent, if they run a window AC each pays an additional $25 per month. I can't see where any real savings is in turning one off a few hours a day . Not a smart business move . But for $100 a night I wouldn't expect much either .

  34. Don't get me started on floats. My wife "had to get" big Swans last year from Nordstrom. They cost a fortune. We must legit have like 30 floats in the shed. It's annoying. On a side note. Everyone just left so it's WNY time! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  36. Got home from working nights a bit ago, head back in around 3:30. In between sometime oldest daughter will stop by for a combo Fathers Day , her Bday a few days ago. Youngest daughter is returning from NYC to Buffalo late today and won't be here ( marched in Mermaid Parade in Coney Island .) most likely I'll get a new tube for the pool , or a camo ball cap and or mixed 6 pack. I don't really want any gifts, well perhaps a Rolex Yatchmaster II . Happy Fathers Day to,all ! edit for pic. Here's the best gift of all .

  38. I have always wanted to add a pond within view of my cabin to my property. Want to stock it with bluegill and bass. be big enough to swim in and skate on in the winter. My brother inlaw has a bunch on his farm and they all vary in size. Any suggestions would be great. FL

  39. 100% worth it at 40 if you plan on hunting in NYS , only down side now is you need to pay ten bucks for a doe permit if you choose to get one. I got mine 20+ years ago and doe permits are grandfathered in and are free. Every year with out fail I have to show whomever is issuing licenses that they are free for me...

  43. we've got a shallow bass pond that's spring fed about 3.5' deep that's always been there. another bigger one that we dug with the dozer and about 10' deep bowl. stacked a few boulders together for structure. bigger bass tend to stay there. smaller 8-12"ers circle the shoreline. then we've got a few duck ponds that are designed for waterfowl habitat. they're very shallow with channels and mounded banks so ponds aren't visible from one another. about anything will use a pond. hardest part is digging it to hold water. we've got a lot of clay. doesn't grow huge antlers but it makes nice ponds. make it close enough to use for cabin but if you have the means give it a dog leg away from the cabin. then plant or give it some screening to keep the end out of view from cabin. animals will use it more often during daylight if it's out of sight from the cabin. another option to keep it cleaner is give it on out flow into a smaller pool for the wildlife. again not in view of the cabin.

  44. my wife wanted a fall wedding. i said it's hunting season, so no. she said we can schedule before deer season as she understands. reluctantly, we schedule a couple weeks prior to the opening day of bow season. any honeymoon that's not hunting related will still give me at least a week free prior to the season. DEC announces moving opening day up two weeks to october 1st. anniversary is September 29th. i missed the first week at most for honeymoon vacation but as the season carries on I remind her i missed opening week for her! lol not much of a worry most of the time the big boys aren't on their feet as much versus last half of October. i don't tell her that though.

  47. That reminds me of something that happened many years ago when I first started fishing for Lake Ontario Trout and Salmon. At that time, you could only keep lake trout that were less than 25" or over 30" long. One day I caught one that was well over 30", but I had no camera on the boat. I put it in the livewell (which it nearly filled) and brought it home alive to show my folks and so my mom could take a picture. After she got the picture, I put it in a cooler and took it down to the small stream behind our house. It was early spring, and the stream was flowing about 6" deep at the time. The fat laker was well over a foot from belly to dorsal fin. That stream connected downstream with Tonawanda creek, which connects with the upper Niagara river. The trout swam away downstream and may or may not have made it to the river. I would imagine that if anyone else saw it or caught it, on it's way back to the river, they would have quite a tale to tell. Incidentally, we did release a few spring lake Ontario cohos, browns and rainbows in that same pond where we put the Erie smallmouths and Ontario Largemouths. None of them survived the summer. I think the cohos floated up first, then the rainbows, followed by the browns.

  49. I don't shoot it myself, but there's no doubt it's devastating stuff. One problem is that the best choice for TSS is #9 shot, which isn't legal in NY (of course, I've never heard of an ECO running around with a micrometer cutting open handloads either...). I'm shooting HeavyWeight 7's from my 20ga and frankly that's already a bit overkill since I won't shoot past 40 yards. On the other hand, if I ever wanted to build a 40 yard .410 the TSS would be a great choice. Make sure you share some pattern pictures if you end up loading it, they are always impressive.
