  1. Clothing variation is always a big problem with me. When things get cold, I start piling on the layers. Next thing I know, I am having collisions between the string and all the puffed out clothing. Also I can get so much clothing on that it starts effecting my stance and head positioning. Most times I wind up having to make sight adjustments depending on what I'm wearing. This year, I am going with a heated (electric) jacket to keep the bulk down, but still stay warm enough. The guys on TV don't have to dress too heavy because they just have to stay warm enough to last until the guys chase the deer out of the pen and past the stand.......lol.

  2. With the season fast approaching, let's all be safe out there and make sure we don't put a double load in our ML. I highly recommend a witness mark on your ram rod. http://fox13now.com/2017/09/19/sanpete-county-man-injured-when-rifle-barrel-explodes-during-target-practice/ lets all be safe and have fun doing it. steve

  5. The first hints of color apppear on the trees Golden rod and ragweed blooming making some sneeze A chill in the morning and heavy dew A cold rain makes everything smell new Red apples hanging on the tree Ouch one just fell and hit me. Birds flock together in anticipation of heading south Squirrels and chipmunks carrying nuts in their mouth. Soft crunching of footsteps in fresh fallen leaves A buck's antlers shaking a tree. A swoosh of an arrow the hiss of the string I sure hope I used the right pin. Crimson puddles on the leaves This is what early fall means to me.

  8. I guess that depends on who you ask and their level of experience hunting other states. It also depends on what standards you use to judge the quality of the deer hunt. I guess if you are looking for a trophy deer behind every tree, NYS may not be the best state to hunt deer. But it sure isn't the worst. Frankly, I have a ball deer hunting here in NYS and enjoy every minute of it.

  9. Everyone has standards that are a little different. That is fine with me. I see nothing wrong with folks changing their standards, depending on how much meat they have in the freezer and how much season remains. I know I certainly do it, and Rob said he does. I really don't know why folks think they need to condemn other folks for having standards that differ from their own. Why not embrace all of them ? I am about as far from a trophy hunter as one could get, but I appreciate the trophy hunters and all the deer they pass. Those small-antlered and young bucks that they pass may very well end up being what keeps my family fed through a tough winter. I also appreciate the brown-down guys, who always shoot the first legal deer they can. The big one that might have showed up right behind it might run my way and provided me with some bonus meat, as well as a cool wall decoration. Its all good, just enjoy the hunt. There is only one valid reason that I would support forcing "higher standards" on all hunters through mandatory antler restrictions. That would be if it could be shown, using data from other states that have them (ie PA), that these AR's result in less hunting accidents. It makes sense to me that it might, by slowing hunters down and causing them to identify the target better before pulling the trigger. I would definitely NOT make an exception for young or first-time hunters. If real data does not support that theory then there should be no mandatory AR's. If AR's ever do spread though NY state, I hope it is a 3-point per side restriction, which would not impact my personal standards at all. Like Rob, I also don't often settle for less than 6 points. I don't mind using my DMP tags on button bucks however, as long as there is not a larger doe available first to use it on.

  11. Saw some nice knifes and collections in the thread for field dressing Deer and wondered if there was the same type of enthusiasm with the the small game and bird hunters. For doing up most of my small game animals and birds I like and collect bird hunter's pocket knives with the toothpick or clip style blade along with a gut hook for removing bird entrails. These knives also work well for me when skinning out any furbearers I take. Al Boker bird gut hook knife

  12. I'm later than usual for checking cameras, but I am off to a good start. There are three or four bucks that I am able to identify and track through the property. Unfortunately, also too many pictures of coyotes, including one that I think is a pup. Looks like he lost one side early on, velvet is covering the stump. Coyote pup? One of several. I saw a nice red one the other day, yipping and barking mid day in the middle of the field. Four in one shot, all younger boys. These two are together a lot, for now... Nice rack, my deer. I actually like the dark ops shot here, looks cool. Closer look.

  17. Just make your habitat buck friendly set aside 5 acres and hinge cut it or clear cut it leave the tops then stay out of it.. All those big bucks find little spots like that band hide..my neighbor my property goes around doesnt hunt and the deer know it a tiny couple of acre spot is all it is and bucks lay next to her pool all day..you could lay a gun over the hood of her car and get a trophy every year.. Its pressure ..pure and simple.. I have a lot of friends in Ohio that hunt and my camp always takes bigger bucks then they do..one even started hunting here with me and he is astounded by the deer we have.. Stop looking at the tv and magazines that showcase. The top 20 bucks taken in 3 States every year( 10 different magazines all show the same bucks) and talk to actual hunters ..nys is not that bad off ..

  19. Whats the difference. A six, four, or spike are all usually only a year old. A couple two inch pieces of antler, will not add meat to the pot.

  30. Yup, right at three, to three and a half, is perfectly in my comfort range for hunting. Along with a crisp clean break, with no creep. I've never shot an Accu Trigger, and not sure if I would like it. For me, it would take some getting used to. But a lot of hunters and shooters seem to like them.

  31. Damn, a couple of my "aces" just stepped out of a sanctuary area, into a WW/clover plot, and eyeballed me for a while as I was trimming a shooting lane from one of my blinds. Hopefully, they have short memories. It looked like an old doe and a 1-1/2, probably her last year's fawn.

  32. Nah I think the Deer world knows we don't carry real trophy Deer in any numbers, are either over ran with Deer in one area with sex ratios and Deer numbers ruining hunting or other areas with a couple deer per square mile or that the weather many years can screw ya up. But I agree. We have a great state for hunters just looking to kill just any deer. Which most are young or baby Deer. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  33. There will be no vertical bow hunting for me again this year, but I am almost ready for my first day of crossbow hunting up in the Northern zone a few weeks from today . I just need to mend the serving a little bit on my string and lube the rail after three practice shots with it yesterday. It was hitting right where I wanted it at 20, 35, and 45 yards. After a day up there with that, my ML is all set for the next day and a half, of a long weekend up at my in-laws place in the Adirondacks. I should be ready for any weather conditions, with a new pop-up blind I just bought and the tree umbrella that I picked up last year. We should still have a little more than one deer left in the freezer, by the time of that trip, including plenty of grind, so a buck would need to be at least a solid 2.5 year old for me to use a tag on that trip. I would be very thankful to fill my antlerless tag again, with a 1-1/2 year old doe, like I was able to do last year. I had planned on staying up there thru the opening weekend of gun season last year. The weather got so bad, that I came home early with my ML doe, and never even took my rifle out of the case. I will not hunt deer at home in the Southern zone this year until crossbow opens, so I still have plenty of time to get things ready here. Hopefully I can trim up some shooting lanes around all of my stands at home this weekend, and over at my folks place next weekend. The food plots are all looking very good. I am going to be a bit more selective with my buck tag up north, because the neighbors have seen a few nice ones running around at home that would be nice to tag. All I have seen at our place is does though, but they should be my "ace in the hole" when crossbow season opens at the peak of the rut. I did see a nice 2-1/2 year buck over at my folks place a few weeks ago that I would love to get a tag on.

  34. I got to work this morning and all of a sudden me ears were plugged solid, like I had shooting muffs on. I grabbed a couple Tylenol something or others and about 45 minutes later they opened back up..... I'll take a couple more here in a few minutes before I hit the rack. I'd be thrilled to make it to 4am.......

  45. My wife has never hunted a day in her life. But she has supported my meager attempts at it for almost 40 years. Her and my hunting partners wife, call themselves widows, and converse through the season. Every year she says, "you claim to see all these big bucks, but you never bring one home"! If I bring home a three year old eight point she says, "it's a baby". Well this year I'll show her!!!.......................grin.
