  4. So, for dinner is smoked St.ouis style ribs. First time using a smoker. Came out awesome! Not quite fall off the bone, but tender as all hell, and just enough crust. Nice smoke ring to boot. Have some bacon and onion baked beans to heat up on the side in a minute here. Sent from my XT830C using Tapatalk

  6. 3N cams, loaded with groups of does. No yotes no Fox. Several bucks. Lots of pics of 5pt and 8pt I’ve had all summer long. In one pic they are eating together and next they are fighting. First sparring pic I ever got. Throw and grow plots going strong, as are the acorns. I’ll be here on 10/1-10/3 for sure. Pretty confident the 5pt and 8pt are both older than 1.5’s. 3 cams spread out across 400yds. These bucks are on each of them. Makeshift blind 8yds from the sparring fight. Several fresh buck rubs. 11. I've probably killed as many deer still-hunting as from a stand, actually, probably more. To me, still-hunting is when you move quietly through the woods looking for deer, hoping to hear and see them first. While stalking is when you see a deer and make a move on it. Lots of techniques...one of my favorite is walking quietly and slowly down the edge of a cornfield, next to the woods during the rut, quiet in the plowed up soil and listen back in the woods for deer walking and running through the leaves. 'Course the wind has to be right. But my favorite and most successful way is still-hunting in full snow camo in a snow storm or snow squalls.

  12. About 10 years ago I screwed up my back turkey hunting, trying to carry one out in my turkey vest...dumb. Twenty pound bird, wrenched my back. Anyways...I tried a chiropractor first...no luck, then pills from my Dr. to relieve the pain...no luck...just dulled it a bit. Finally went to an acupuncturist. I was sceptical...but will try anything. Instantly! felt better in a couple days I could straighten up for the first time in three weeks. I do not understand it...how putting needles in my ears, hands and arms could help my back? But I don't really care. It worked when the other two disciplines didn't. If....or should I say when I develop another chronic pain, I'm going to the acupuncturist first!

  17. Point well taken. We all whine about the shortage of access to open hunting land and how crowded hunting conditions are killing hunting. Well, we have enough crowds without trying to attract more. Relax and hunt the piles of deer that we got and get over this trophy craze. You need guaranteed trophy deer takes, go to some game farm and get your trophy-fix taken care of.

  22. 32yds. Longest of my short career. Broadhead. Perched up 15 feet on a rock ledge. Aimed a little high since I’m dialed in at 25yds dead on. Lobbed it in and it still was a little high. Maybe because I was high up? Regardless, it’s a dead deer. White target Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  26. Saw some nice knifes and collections in the thread for field dressing Deer and wondered if there was the same type of enthusiasm with the the small game and bird hunters. For doing up most of my small game animals and birds I like and collect bird hunter's pocket knives with the toothpick or clip style blade along with a gut hook for removing bird entrails. These knives also work well for me when skinning out any furbearers I take. Al Boker bird gut hook knife

  30. I have never worried about score I just target the top 3 to 5 bucks I have on cam.some have gone as high as 150 when scored..I share the pics with guys that hunt here and let them decide wether to hold out for a bigger deer or take a yearling ..that's is my management..no point or score restrictions just shoot what your happy with no complaining someone gets something bigger.. When you drop the score and just think I'd be happy with him you become a better Hunter and much happier

  32. We were getting stink bugs in the house all summer ,it seemed like everyday I was killing one and throwing it out . I would use 2 paper towels folded a couple times ,after I snatched them I would squish them and the stink would still get on my fingers.

  33. My dad loves to hunt that way ,unfortunately the property we hunt is longer then it is wide and doesn't allow for stalking into the wind for very long distances. He wears noninsulated muck boots and is dead silent when he walks.

  35. Id like to see the research on that... kind of hard to declare something as subjective as that. My vote would be for one of the best places to hunt whitetails, but I obviously haven't done the research on it like you have. It would be interesting to find out the criteria used to determine the BEST place to hunt deer. I may have to move to another state if the hunting here isn't as good as I've thought it was all these years. I certainly hope the DEC does something as important as "making good moves that actually help something" because that is definitely what is keeping NY from being the "best".

  38. My wife is not a hunter but enjoys the venison especially the venison bologna. She understands how much hunting means to me and my son and has never complained about how much I hunt. I always tell her she's lucky I only deer hunt and that the season is only 2 1/2 months long. She enjoys her alone time curling up with a good book. Sent from my XT1650 using Tapatalk

  39. Checked cams today, I’ll start with 3S (Westchester- Bow only). nothing bigger than the same 4pt I always get pics of. Several does, but I did come across a nice big buck rub that I’m hoping is from a bigger buck. I also took 3 shots with broadheads from my perched spot on some rocks. it’s about 15 feet higher than surrounding land. Shot 24, 28, and 32 yd shots. The 32 was the furthest I ever took. I aimed a little high and lobbed right in, still a little higher than expected but maybe since I’m shooting like a cheating treestand guy up 15’ essentially. Anyway, now I got confidence at that distance. You can see white target at base of old treestand. Next post will be 3N report, which is where I will be opening day. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  47. I will give you one of the best smoking resources around. http://www.smokingmeatforums.com/f/ Make sure to keep notes on your smokes. I failed to do that in the beginning and it extends your learning time lol. Take notes of times, temps, weight going in, woods, rubs, outside temp....Believe me it will help. I wish I had when I started. Also good thermometers are a must for the smoker and the meat.
