  1. Well, awesome and eventful night. I finally checked something off the bucket list.... Took my son hunting ! He's only 3.5 and I figured we might spook something at some point. Threw the blind up in the neighbors field and off we went. Wouldn't you know it a couple doe came out after a short time! My son actually waved at then but thankfully we were in the shadow of the blind. We watched them for awhile then I decided to take the shot. She was at 20 yrds broadside. Unfortunately, I grazed the blind window and buried a rage right below her. They came in from a different route and I hadn't had that window open enough to shoot, apparently. Either way, he said he had fun and that we will get her next time !! What a blessing. Tonight will be a night I NEVER forget. Sent from my XT1650 using Tapatalk

  2. Well got a doe today. Haven't had a working computer in a year or more but now that I do, I'm back on the forum. I hunted this morning with my bow and did a little spot and stalk, came up on a doe and her fawn. (which I had the opportunity to shoot last night also) I couldn't get myself to shoot the doe considering the fawn was still seemed clingy and young. So after work today I headed out to a different spot. I may or may not have skipped my English college course after work. I got in my tree around 4:15 and by 4:45 I had arrowed this nice big doe. I had to work fast due to the heat and rain but she's quartered and in the fridge now.

  4. Just arrowed a big yote at 15 yds, hit him a bit back I think but he's got a 2" hole through him, didn't want to risk trying to stop him so I let her rip Sent from my XT1080 using Tapatalk

  5. 10/11/2017 rained a little bit and he completely snuck up on me. i was in a ground blind and he was less than 10 yds when i finally heard him. truthfully the 1st arrow buried into a 2 inch tree where he was walking across. He was going left to right and i was turning to my right - for me a difficult shot. he did maybe a 3yd circle and just stood and only gave me a neck shot as he was covered by trees.

  7. When we were out bowhunting the opening day my wife swore she had seen a bobcat in a tree at last light. I was like are you sure it wasn’t a raccoon or a porcupine. Well it was a indeed a bobcat..

  8. Finally! First with a bow. It has definitely been a learning curve. 1:30 arrived at stand. Camera had showed nothing coming during the day but I wanted to sit. Cooled just a bit near 6:00 and this guy stops quartered away.

  9. Wife was in a meeting today and got talking to the lady sitting next to her. Long story short...I have 100 acres to hunt in 6a now. Currently sitting on the edge of a secluded field watching 6 does and two bucks on the other side of the field. Gotta love the wife!!!!

  11. Well after anxiously waiting all summer for the bucks in my close to home spot to show back up, they finally did, the past week I've had 7 different bucks show up, much later this year than usual. And naturally I drove an hour this morning and a nice buck was under my stand this morning 5 mins from home... Sent from my XT1080 using Tapatalk

  12. 10/11 Kunox and I went on a 6 hour old track today. The hunter did everything right.....when the blood started getting hard to find, he backed out and called us. This was a perfect track for inexperienced Kunox. The deer was almost directly beneath the hunter who was 15' up in the tree and his pass through shot took out a lung on the way through. There was lots of blood on the trail initially, which of course was no problem for Kunox. As it started to disappear, he did miss a turn. I let him go about 75 yards to see if he'd correct himself, but he didn't so I carried him back. He at once locked on and stayed on. The blood stopped but Kunox kept going and 50 yards later we found the deer. Total length of the track was 250 yards. Poor Luna has an infection in her paw from a pricker. Warm water and Edson salt twice a day, and an antibiotic. My wife is taking her to NH tomorrow until Tuesday to see the kids. Poor girl doesn't understand why she can't take part in the fun.

  13. 10/6 5:30pm. First time successfully calling one in. Been getting trail cam pics of bucks sparring lately so I decided to just tickle the rattling antlers a bit. About a minute or two later, this guy is rubbing a tree 30 yards from me. Walked 8 yards in front of me perfect broadside. Double lung with an entry and exit hole but not a complete pass through. Good blood trail, ran about 100 yards. Got some bigger bucks on cam on another property I hunt but the access is rough and I'm gonna be working a lot so I decided real quick that I'm wasn't after a trophy that night. Although once gun season comes I might pass on something this big. Just happy to have some meat and time out enjoying the outdoors. Don't be afraid to hit the rattles a little this early in the season. Good luck to everyone! Sent from my SM-J327T using Tapatalk

  14. Hey Guys, So when I shot my Buck opening day this year and backed out for a few hours, I couldn't help by do my research on anything that could potentially give me an edge on following his spotty blood trail. I read online that some guys will put Hydrogen Peroxide in a spray bottle and spray the area of grass/dirt where they lost their blood trail. Any blood that is present will bouble and turn bright white! I tried it on my arrow and surprisingly it worked. I ended up bringing a bottle with me and used it a few times when the blood trail got really thin. It was unreal and definitely helped me recover my deer. This may be common knowledge in the community, but figured it wouldn't hurt to share for a relatively new hunter like me Thanks! Steve

  15. Not going out tonight but decided what a better way to celebrate my 30th bday tomorrow then skipping work and going for an all day sit. Perfect wind for my lease all day so ill start on my orchard stand then back to cornfield/food plot for night sit.

  17. I have (actually my son has) a Hunter Safety System harness in very good condition that we would like to donate to a kid who can use it...not for someone to take and sell, please. The harness is listed as SMALL with a 50-120# weight limit and a 22-32" torso size...I believe it is the Lil Treestalker model. As I recall, this was a relatively expensive harness when I bought it a couple years ago and very easy to put on...vest style. Again, the harness is in next to mint condition...my son out grew it. I can send a pict if needed. I would be happy to ship it...or you can stop by to pick it up...Lancaster, NY. Thanks, Dino PS. below is a pict of the harness on my daughter.

  19. Thanks guys , but no biggy half the fun is seeing if I can will them across...lol I have one and that was the first year hunting Rivers blind...It took for what seemed forever and I was watching the time, he showed before my timer buzzed for the opener of day......he walked out and hung in his lane way, went to the fence a couple of times and finally jumped about 10 mins into season.. but the second his feet hit the ground he was out of my lane way and in the woods...I had to re adjust windows(gun season) and find him again for the shot....72 yards but he fell behind the blind wht belly showing...not huge but first out of that new blind..

  20. I sat out this morning, about 8:45, a nice doe came through with her "fawns" The one was a button buck, and walked over to my path in the weeds where I was sat up with my climber. He came within 15 feet to the base of the tree before he turned and trotted off. Pretty neat to watch them at those close distances.

  21. Yup, it really just cooks down to a choice. Hunters can choose to hunt from tree stands, from ground blinds, still hunt, ect. Hunters can choose to hunt with a vast variety of hunting implements, even all bows are not even close to being the same.. Hunters can choose to wear an unlimited array of clothing that fits their own style of hunting. The point is, choice! And I am not willing to choose what another hunter chooses to use, because it may be something different than what I use. C'mon guys, just get out and hunt! Don't worry what the other hunters are doing. You will find it's much more enjoyable doing your own thing, and leaving others to do theirs.

  22. How many people are not registered to vote? If you are not Why? Voting is the biggest thing everyone can do to ensure their part of the process and their voice is heard. I hear all the time "My Vote Doesn't Count" "We Can't Outvote Downstate" Well the truth of the matter is only 30% of NYers vote. That holds true Downstate as much as Upstate. If 10% more upstate people voted, the tide would turn. The myth that upstate can't beat downstate is part of the media hype that keeps people from the polls. If you are not registered, tomorrow is the deadline to be eligible to vote on November 7th. Please register. It takes less than 5 minutes online. Lets make 2017 a year that upstate begins to be heard. Please Register and Please Vote. https://www.dmv.org/ny-new-york/voter-registration.php

  25. Went out this morning..at 8 had a high tight racked 8 point stroll by at 22 yrds...across the line on neighbors...the cutting fence worked because he passed me then went to a licking branch and scrape worked it and immediately went through the fence to our side and walked past 2 stands and a blind. 21/2 year old by looks of mass and body wanted nothing to do with the grunt tube...

  26. Ok. So I get this right. 2/3 of hunters in NY are lazy and can't score with a gun. But we put a crossbow in there hands and they will all of a sudden start to take deer? We must be saying they will take deer because they are going. Change the face of the archery woods. Right? That orange army will march in, slaughter everything and then stick with it year after years because it is making it so easy.

  28. I was able to get out for a quick sit before work, I had that same six pt that looks like a pronghorn milling around eating apples but nothing else. Just my second sit of the season and now im traveling again for a week, Im selfishly glad the weather has been so "nice". I pulled a camera and have 54 videos including a nice 8 point, would post it if I knew how. This cheap Stealth Cam has now taken 700 pics and 54 videos and the battery still reads full

  29. because you don't show the same level of devotion to be a real deer hunter as they do and becasue of that you shouldn't have a chance to shoot their deer.

  30. Well we were giving him the vitamin D through a dropper like the doctors showed us but he took a big deep breath right as my wife squeezed the dropper bulb and he sucked in a big shot of that vitamin D stuff. The vitamin stuff was kinda thick almost like maple syrup so it got caught in his little lungs and he was having problems breathing. I was sound asleep middle of the day and my wife woke me up screaming bloody murder that she thinks our son is dying. I have my CPR and first aid courses so I tried doing a few things to free his airway but didn't have much luck. That's when we jumped in the truck and I hauled ass passing everyone and their mother to get to the hospital. Kids can scare the hell out of you in no time

  31. Made by Ranch Hand in Texas. I've got 12 deer kills with it and destroyed a metal guard rail parking barrier at the hospital when I raced there when my newborn was choking on vitamin D liquid we were giving him. He was turning blue so I raced down the mountain to the hospital and didn't come to a full stop fast enough before blasting through the guard rail, chipped some paint off the bumper but that's it.

  33. Well I got a doe tonight. That Honda Civic sure did a number on her. Came out of no where, was doing 10 under the limit being as vigilant as always. Luckily it happened right in front of my bosses house as I'm on my way to work. So I had the perfect excuse to be a few mins late tonight. Car still runs and drives but its down a headlight and some stuff is hanging all over so I had my wife come pick me up and give me a lift to work. Will have to drop it off at the body shop tomorrow and see how much damage is really there. Not the way I wanted to bag my first doe this fall[emoji849]

  35. A couple of other points crossbows are very front heavy and difficult to shoot offhand,, also they can be very difficult to move around a tree stand with horizontal limbs, also I have put more than one arrow in a deer over my career try that with a crossbow or a recover from a miss with a crossbow is next to impossible..

  36. I have not missed an election in the 54 years that I have been eligible. Registered to the Conservative party because that has always reflected my primary values and most of my core principles. All of that and I still live in a commie state represented by all these people that seem to feel bad that we have any rights at all left. But, I can truthfully say that I had no part in electing these clowns. At least the local elections always seem to come out the way that I vote. Small victories here and there .... lol.

  37. How about... " crossbows are archery equipment, there is no significant advantage to them other than the amount of practice to become proficient, and therefore they belong in archery season as another tool for people to use. " ....as well as many other answers scattered throughout this thread and every crossbow inclusion thread for the last few years on this site. Now that that part is cleared up, I have to ask, who are you to say what is a real bow and what isnt? Personally, I go by the definitions of what archery includes.

  39. If you send me an IM, I'll give you my cell...I would be happy to talk you through skinning the coyote. Also, don't use bleach to whiten the skull...use peroxide. The bleach will make the bone very brittle. I can talk you though properly whitening the skull too. Nice shot!

  40. Nice. I'm sure you could find a YouTube video on skinning it. You can buy a wire stretcher to dry it. Can freeze hide all rolled up tight and in garbage bag until you score a stretcher. You'll want to stretch fur side in for about 12 hours tops. Then turn it fur side out to complete drying process. If you wait more than 12 hours to turn you won't be able too. Windex and paper towels will take the blood out. Look up tail stripper to help debone the tail. Easy make with a small piece of wood , drill

  41. Even though the hunter using a crossbow, may be a better than average bowhunter too. As the most successful crossbow hunters will be the average or above bowhunter. As they will already have the skills needed to get close to deer. As that is the number one skill needed to kill a deer, be it with a bow or crossbow.

  42. i'm just the opposite, i never buy new bows. I can get 2 used ones for the price of a new lol.

  43. i will not bow hunt in the rain, nor if there is a strong possibility of it raining shortly after the hunt. I take only high percentage close shots and even with that I have had several deer take a partial step between the time my brain says release and my fingers respond thus going from a lung shot to liver shot. What you do after the shot WILL dictate the outcome, you make a bad shot and its raining you have 2 choices either get down and follow/chase the animal or walk away and hope it only goes a short distance and dies and you can find it via grid searching because with rain you are going to have little to no blood to follow. for me there is no way I am taking an avoidable loss possibility shot because of rain.

  47. 10/10 At 9:00, Kunox and I went on a track for a doe shot at 5:00. The hunter said it was an extreme quartering away shot and the arrow was completely inside her. He had marked last blood. When I got there we drove into the field and the hunter said he had just seen eyes and it looked like it bedded down in the field. We scanned the fairly small hayfield but there was no deer there. He also stated there were 10 deer in the field when he shot. The hit site wasn't marked, so we worked the area and Kunox picked up some blood. He methodically worked that field......back and forth and kept picking up blood the hunter hadn't seen, and we ended up in the treeline. This is where the hunter had seen blood and marked it. We ended up going past the point of loss and into a cornfield. We found three drops within 10 yards of each other. Kunox was unable to show us anymore and was going in all different directions, I believe on hot lines. The cornfield has a huge weed problem, with weeds being waist high in some areas. We worked through this area with no luck. We called it at midnight with plans to come back at 8:00 after he took his kids to school. This morning we went back to last blood and again Kunox was all over the place. I did several restarts with no results. The hunter found some more blood as we worked an area nearby, just as we found the doe about thirty yards away in the grass. We were really close last night and I'm surprised we didn't find her. Great learning experience for Kunox though! Speaking of learning, or should I say "not learning", we saw another porcupine last night and with a strong grip on the lead, I took Kunox over there to see what he would do. He went into attack mode. The hunter shot the doe from the ground, and the arrow ran along the spine. We could not find an exit hole, but also couldn't find the arrow in the deer. He's going to let me know what happened to the arrow when he skins the deer out. No major organs were hit.
