  1. Super stoked with this one. I had an encounter with him earlier in the season at 45yds, but he knew the area wasn't good and slipped back the way he came from. He knew again this time, but didn't clear out. He was about to walk through my lane at 8yds, but spooked and ran to my left. He stopped at 35yds, turned brood side and looked back at me. I wasn't sure if he would stay long enough for me to get a shot off, but I was blessed. A lot of first came with this hunt. 12pt, 210 dressed.

  7. 11/9Luna and I went up to the beautiful Adirondacks this afternoon to look for a buck that was shot this morning. It was reported as a shoulder shot, but turned out to be a gut shot. Nothing had been marked and the hunter was uncertain of the hit site location. We had to start at some blood on a skid road and had 50 yards or less of blood, plus one bed. The hunter reported seeing a total of 4 beds as he tracked it earlier before losing blood. He and his buddy grid searched for three hours. They must have been careful not to step in blood because Luna sailed right through the search area. We ended up going a couple hundred yards and I commented that it would be nice to see some blood. The hunter asked me if I thought she was on it and I said definitely. We went another twenty five yards down a hill toward the river and there he lay. It was great seeing the big smile on this retired Army veterans face. Thank you for your service, Carl!

  8. got this guy last Saturday out looking for does. he was the third good buck I had seen that morning all between 9 and 10:30. came in behind me stopped in a shooting lane at 27 yards. I made a good heart shot and saw him go down after about a 50 yard run. not the best picture to show his size, he was 18 inches inside.

  10. Well our time here in Nebraska is coming to a close. No big bucks for me or the other guy. I shot a doe Wednesday night to fill my tag and help herd management. Got her dropped off at the butcher yesterday morning and they said it will be done this morning. Got it all ground into burger, that’s what we use most of when cooking. Rut action seems to be late here this year. Everyone else at this hotel said the same thing. Not a lot of big boys out chasing during daylight yet. But we’ve had a good time, met some great people and drank ALOT of cold ones with them and the locals at the bars every night haha. Packing our stuff in the truck now and headed to the butcher to pick up meat then we are homeward bound. Wife says it’s 18 degrees at home and we have a heavy dusting of snow. Winds are whipping too I guess. Can’t wait to get home and see my boys, this is the longest I’ve ever been away from my kids since they were born, I gave up the guide life and traveling to be home with them. Sunday I hope to get a little hunting done behind my house though! Good luck to everyone hitting the woods today!

  20. so if your sick of hunting then just dont hunt. Take a break. A lot of guys dont get anytime off to hunt so its not fair to shorten season because some people are tired of it. Also if its to try to get bigger bucks how is the answer to shorten season so you dont get time to see them....still makes no sense to me.

  22. I've seen a mix of things going on this season so far. I've seen young and mature bucks with their noses straight down with doe's in front of them, tails straight up and happy to see them. I've seen that about 5 times over the last two weeks, but mostly I'm seeing solitary doe's.. in the woods and spotting the fields at night. I was fortunate enough to be in the right place at the right time to drop one off at the taxidermist tonight. He came out with a doe to hit the cut corn in the evening. Just light grunting as he walked with her, nothing aggressive. Talking with the taxidermist, he said the big wave hasn't hit yet. He has many years of experience and is always the best reliable source for knowing when "it's on". He's saying next week. Bad thing with that (and good), is a lot of mature ones are going to be chasing hard opening week of southern zone gun. Stay in the woods y'all, never know when they are gonna pay a visit. 23. So, the morning start was not ideal. Wife forgot to set her alarm so it was already light, and after 7 am when I got up. It was windy and raining so I decided against a hunt. Suddenly the wind dropped and the rain abated. I stepped outside and the air felt good. I wondered if the rains all through the night meant deer would be late getting going. I hurriedly dressed and hit the same stand I have hunted all weekend, along a rub and scrape line and with camera data showing daylight Bucks, morning and afternoon. I got into the stand and could see the leaf litter around was disturbed. I figured it was too late and I had missed the action, 8:30 am by this point. I needed to go number 2 real bad, and so hobbled over to a creek nearby and sat on a downed tree going across it. It snapped just as I was finishing up and I went tumbling into the creek water and got a very wet arm. I figured this was a sign and was planning to head back in. As I passed the stand I decided to give it one more half hour. It was about 9:30 by this point. I got into a daze, thinking and talking to myself and looking in the wrong direction. For some reason I looked back over my shoulder, and there he was at 20 yards making to walk right past me, just as cameras had indicated he might. I barley had time to grab the bow, turn 270 degrees with him as he passed, all the while trying to catch my d-loop and failing. Panic set in, I was not going to be ready. I just managed to draw back before he entered the last shooting lane opportunity at 15 yards, and I don't remember letting loose. What I do remember is the horrifying sight of seeing my arrow buried in his rump.He had picked up the pace as he passed by. I should have bleated. Blood spurted but he darted on although looking very wounded and limpy. I was crushed. I figured I was going to have a stalk, track and finish adventure. He stopped at 50 yards, lay down and stopped moving. After a few minutes there was a little more movement. I decided he was hurt and I needed to get down and finish things. I came around behind and downwind of him but as I got to about 25 yards it seemed like it was over. I got to 15 yards, drew back and made some noise. He didn't budge. I knew it was over and I had gotten very lucky...very lucky indeed. I went back and tracked the blood. It was heavy and bubbly. I found the arrow and I had gotten decent penetration. I had obviously hit his femoral artery. All in all I'd say things started and ended in less than 8 minutes but those minutes watching him down lasted a lifetime while I feverishly calculated the best plan. It was a big disappointment to have made such a crappy shot based on me being distracted and rushing a shot I probably should never have taken and was not ready to take. Lesson learned. I will be frosty in the future when I know Bucks are using an area, as was the case here. Happy to have filled my bow tag however, given the inclement and odd weather we have been enjoying. I am handing the property over to my neighbor for gun season. My mission is to help him get a nice Buck. I don't feel the need for another deer just yet myself.

  28. It's a fair point TF but gun in rut would change the fact that lots of deer are seen in that period. I do find it far easier to kill a nice buck in Archery vs regular season.

  29. To HELL with that idea!! In the past 10 or so years in the Catskill region where I've generally hunted, I've seen antler restrictions implemented, you have slim chances of drawing a doe permit and now they want to shorten the gun season? Maybe someone can give me a good reason why I should even buy a hunting license at all? And please, I don't want anyone giving me the BS that I should go out and start bowhunting where I could use the tag on a doe. Why should only bowhunters get the privilege of taking a doe? And of course shortening the gun season would also probably benefit bowhunters more than anyone else. Sure as hell ain't benefiting the gun hunters!!

  31. Guess I'm now officially old and soft! In years past, I'd be out regardless of weather conditions. Just not going out in this wind and cold. Hunting is just an enjoyment for me now, and if I'm not enjoying myself, I'm not sitting. The fact I've already filled my buck tag does make the decision much easier though. Wishing all who are out the best of luck! Any deer killed today is well deserved!

  33. Maybe he doesn't believe you because if he bought into everything you say he'd be shooting deer straight up the bunghole and hoping Jesus makes it right... Just because you had one experience doesn't make it gospel either, I've also had deer at 50 yds trotting through and wouldn't even stop to look at me when I yelled out loud, there are exceptions to every rule. The point to where this conversation is currently I think is that you probably shouldn't be taking any different shots than you did/could with a compound. The crossbow doesn't have laser guiding systems, and 60 yds is quite a stretch in a archery hunting scenario, compound or crossbow. I think most people forget, bowhunting is about how close you can get, not how far away you can shoot. Sent from my XT1080 using Tapatalk

  39. Here's a wild statement- I have NEVER seen rutting activity in my 10 years of bow hunting - no vocalizations, no chasing, no scraping or rubbing of trees, no bucks fighting...while i am in stand - I know it must happen but I also know that I am not able to be I he woods for any consistent chunk of time/days in a row based on my teaching schedule. I know it MUST happen but I have just never hit it right: maybe I will get to see it in 9 hours after an Evan Williams induced nap that is set to commence in 5, 4, 3, 2.....zzzzzz Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  40. I quit counting years ago, but in rough figures I have probably killed about 70 deer with shotgun slugs, 60 with various centerfire rifles and maybe 25 with a muzzleloader ... I have never hunted much with small bore like .22 centerfires, although I shot one with a .222 Rem and 2 or 3 with a 25-06... The majority of my rifle killed deer have been shot with a 7mm08 and a .280 rem, along with a couple with a 30-06 and a couple with a 9.3 x 62, which is roughly equivalent to a .35 Whelen. The shotgun slug deer were killed with foster slugs, Brenneke slugs, and Win BRI sabot slugs....never used any of the newer high tech shotgun slug loads...All my MZ deer were shot with .50 cal round balls or NoExcuses 460 grain conicals.. I don't recall any real trend for better blood trails from one weapon to another....On a broadside shot I usually line up with a foreleg and aim about 1/3 of the way up the ribcage...That has resulted in many heart shots, and many times broke a foreleg in the process..They run off with a foreleg flopping and usually drop within sight.. I have had a few that were hit high or high and slightly back that ran quite a ways and did not leave good trails...Two deer in particular would have been difficult to track without good snow...Another there was no snow and I could not track it, but fortunately it was found by another hunter...Those three deer were shot with three different instruments, a shotgun with slugs, a 7mm08 with 120 barnes, and a MZ with a heavy conical.. Nearly all of the deer I have hit in the low chest or center lungs have left good blood trails Soo, from my limited experience I am guessing that WHERE you hit has a lot more to do with the blood trail than WHAT you hit them with, within reason..

  41. That buck could no longer exist just as easily if someone kills it with a longbow... and there are many casual bow hunters, as well as determined crossbow hunters. So, you're in favor of reducing hunter numbers in NY so that you can have the woods to yourself?

  42. Well first want to know if anyone shot a deer with a crossbow on Lapp rd or Wolcottsville rd today or last night. Had this little guy come hobbled through and was suffering. I put one through the heart to end his misery. Pulled a small arrow out of his back in picture. Just cause ya hunt with a crossbow doesn’t mean you shouldn’t practice. Feel bad I had to waste my tag but wasn’t going to leave to suffer. Called DEC they didn’t give a crap.

  43. 11/8 A friend shot a buck last night and Kunox and I tracked it this morning. There were a couple drops found right where it entered the woods and Kunox headed up the trail, showing us a few drops here and there. About 75 yards in, he abruptly took a sharp right turn onto a different trail. 25 yards later he showed us this fine 6 point. I was really happy for him....he needed a find. I have no idea why pics posted on this site get turned.....nowhere else does this happen.
