  6. Up in ladder stand. Never killed a deer past 2:30 so hoping to break the ice. Shooting through the hills so thinking that’s a good sign. A few field mode deer along the drive. Bumped a plump doe 30 yards from stand. Couldn’t get her to stop. Tried an estrus drag on way in. Screwy wind so only getting half my normal field of view without blowing straight at them. My ML wants to make some noise.

  9. Today's my birthday, and for 40 yrs I've done my damnedest to get a bday buck without success. This morning was no different. Didn't see a thing. I'll be out this afternoon for another try. There's always next year. Lol

  10. The ten I shot opening morning last year and the nine I shot this year with the bow. Not really into measuring and weighing every deer I shoot. But that nine was a fatty with some good mass throughout. Wider spread and good long main beams. I just know it's a big ol buck, Jack!!

  19. I love bowhunting. But i'll be honest. Drives are fun, both sitting and watching. With stand hunting you're rarely off approach trails, so it's a chance to go stomping through the woods and find sign and get some action.

  20. I love this statement! LOL Oh the travesty of getting up at 5am! And I guess that's only on the days you hunt? I have no problem getting up at 4am EVERY morning, so I guess that makes YOU lazier than me! LOL

  21. I participate in drives a few days per season with buddies. I prefer smaller, quiet drives where we plan them out, use the wind to our advantage and gently bump the deer along. Other times, we have larger groups, but we still apply the same basic tactics. I can only take so much of them though, I would much rather be still hunting, on stand or doing small pushes with one or two other people, but we hunt working farms where filling the farm DMAPs is the name of the game. Farmers dont give a rats ass how the deer are killed, as long as it happens, and well planned drives are a good way to get tags filled.

  26. Think I did okay on this one. Serial number goes back to 1976. It was an original owner estate sale gun at a local shop. 30-06. Seems lightly handled, although the ejector port dustcover cover is cracked. If anyone knows how to install that without removing the barrel to take the entire bolt out, please tell me. I ordered up a Redfield Revolution 3-9 for it.

  35. Did a slow trail walk around the property...OMG so much deer crap! ...got to the oak flats plot and I'm watching the bedding area on the other side as I approach to check cam ..Up pop two deer just off my left side..few yards away...They get 20 +yrds out on the slashing and stop...I froze. It's the buck fawn and doe... So starts a 20 min stare down and walk back to me...Do you know how sore that can make you?...geezs...The doe fawn was much smarter. She stayed well into the slashings slowly moving away as he came towards me. It ended when he got into the open and I stood there in the open as well . By now gun shouldered and supported with and army type sling rest....That was well over a 5 min 10 yrds wide open stare down ...him licking his nose bobbing his head...pretending to clean his back and quickly looking at me...pretending to eat and snapping to attention...LOL the little guy pulled out all the stops. I was dressed in black jogging sweats ,camo jacket ..work clogs orange vest and hat, no mask, no gloves...The doe finally decided she'd waited long enough ..gave a quick huff and trotted away he turned and decided she had the right Idea and trotted after her... Wow was that fun...sore... but shoulders ,knees on fire LOL...I'm not desperate enough to shoot a fawn buck or doe...besides I owe them, if not for them all I'd see this season is crap! Literally...Though he did give me a chance to at least remember what my gun feels like shouldered...hahaha...

  36. I was on a drive a couple years ago, we had a foot of snow. I came to a creek about 15 yards across and could not find a way to get over it short of walking 3/4 of a mile or so to the road. Finally said to heck with it and plunged in lol, waste deep. I got out and immediately froze solid. As I'm hobbling in a doe that got back through the drive hopped a fence and stood right in front of me, bang. Last day of the late season. Long story short, drives can be a lot of fun!

  37. Prior to about 5 years ago, our typical routine would be... Stand Hunting the first 5 days of gun only and then the remainder of the season, we would Stand Hunt til 9 am, Drives the middle of the day and then Stand Hunt the Evening. Just like any type of Hunting, I had Success and Failures. It broke up the monotony of sitting all day and also provided action when daylight activity was minimal. We have decided not to do drives anymore because we feel the Negatives outweigh the Benefits in regards to disturbing the Deer and pushing them off the Property. There are all kinds of Tactics for Hunting, no one way is better than another, it is a personal preference. I moved to Virginia about 20 years ago and they run Dogs, trust me that was something that was hard for me to adjust to. As time passed and I have started to understand the Heritage of Running Dogs for Deer and the Club Mentality, I have embraced it. It's not my choice for pursuing Deer however, I participate in the comradery and it's a nice change of pace late in the season when I have already put in hundreds of hours on stand. Merica, where we have the Freedom to choose! Don't Hate on others choices!

  39. oh please. If you're 2 weeks into gun there isn't anything wrong with a good ole drive. If that's the only way you hunt? maybe. at 16 I killed my first deer on a drive after siting a few times without luck. Put a few on for my 80 year old grandpa and disabled uncle who didn't have deer. I bet a picture of their mounts on the wall would put you to shame.

  42. If a drive is done properly deer are not flying by. They are in fact only suposed to be moving at a quick walk at best. There is a lot of planning and skill in doing a good drive.. I have done them with up to 21 people and they are very sucessful. Rules especially safety rules are to be strictly adheared to. Our biggest one is if you are in a stand you stay in the stand till drive is done even if you just shot a world record!!!

  45. Unfortunately many hunters would be lost just 100 yards off the road. The big woods is definitely not for everyone. I personally would not like to see the Adirondack park turn into what the other state lands have turned into for hunting. Some logging would be nice to open the canopy up and allow for better food source and better browse for all animals. I like the lower deer density though.
