  1. Had a couple visitors to the yard yesterday morning. Don't usually see them this close to home unless things really get pretty rough out there for them later into winter. Had to shoot them through the window un-edited so not the best quality. They eventually bedded down just 20yds off the back deck until the neighbor let his dogs out for their mornin' leak. These two have been hanging around for the past 3 days now snacking on all the low hanging snow covered hemlock on the edge of the yard.

  2. I'd call the guy from his number on the sign first. Me:- "Hey..., Mr Joe Blow, are you at home right now" Joe Blow- "Yes I am, may I ask who's calling?" Me- "Thanks for taking my survey",lol *wooly retrieves his deer

  3. I stopped hunting brush, sure it’s plentiful and easy to sneak up on ( if you watch the wind ) but I’ve found it to stringy and hard to chew, if I want that I’ll just eat Mrs Nomads cooking .

  4. Checked my traps the other day on one of the coldest days of the year. When I walked up to him he started flipping out. First he started growling and jumping around biting everything in sight. Even the hair on his back was up. I never caught a coyote by the back foot before which was kind of surprising , especially since I had a few guide sticks around the pan. The best thing about this cold weather is that you will rarely catch any non target animals like coons , opossums and skunks.

  7. Been a long time! I finally knocked down a mature buck here in my home State of Pa. Killed him the second Monday of rifle season. Friend and I still hunted toward one another along the "military crest" of a ridge. He bumped a bunch of deer and this beauty came along. Forty yard quartering to shot with the .270 dropped him in his tracks. Elated to say the least! A lot of luck involved but I did work hard to create some luck. Want to thank everyone for their input back when I started this topic. Sorry the photo came out sideways. I tried fixing it but had no luck.

  8. Nope... If you shot it on property you had permission on and you blood trailed it to there, can prove it... I would walk to a deer I could see and drag it back un-gutted, gut it on the property I had permission on..

  9. First to land some property to hunt. And many of you have graciously already offered that up and much appreciated Get my daughter to tip over her first turkey. Get my daughter her second deer For me and her to get 3 combined in the freezer. May 1st is rapidly approaching but now that I have a bow ( Thanks The Real TC ) I’d relish the thought of killing a bird with it. I gotta get cracking on that To be joining the Live from the woods thread during bow season is going to be awesome ! So of course my first archery deer on top of the list. To coyote hunt with success. Reasonable goals I think.

  10. In my late 30's I set a goal to hunt on all 6 continents for something by 50; big game;small game;birds; I'm running a few years behind but next year I'll finish that (hopefully) with an Asian trip (most likely Ibex or Tur) In between been a bit distracted with hunting Southern Africa and have more than a few months on the ground visiting and hunting. I'll add......Hunters who can successfully take and have the skills to hunt Whitetail deer have my utmost respect and admiration. The guys and gals who can hunt up a deer on unknown property from scratch are top notch in my book

  12. What makes a gun a "brush" gun? Small and easily maneuverable? I know deflection is deflection whether its a 12g or 30-30. I guess I would say my 30-30 because it is so easy to carry and shoulder being small.

  13. Never in the woods. Years ago I stayed in my folks guest room overnight as both not feeling well. Room is tiny and pitch black with lights off. I heard a noise and got up. I couldn’t find the light switch nor the door handle for what felt like forever. I totally panicked too. Thank goodness I didn’t rip off a couple of distress shots as would have scared the crud out of my folks

  14. Me too. As a property owner, I do not call this trespassing. And I have been on both sides of this.

  15. Move the posted signs temporarily?! Sorry , I’m retrieving him Sorta like doing 62 in a 55 zone. Being honest , bash me if you want. I’ve adhered to every hunting law in my life. Here lies a question What if you could see him farther Say 50 yards ? 100 yards ? What if there’s snow to show positive evidence ?

Small game...Grey, black and fox squirrels, cottontail rabbits, snowshoe rabbits, raccoons... Medium and big game....feral hogs, pronghorn antelope, whitetail deer, mule deer, 3 different subspecies of caribou, two different subspecies of moose, Rocky Mountain elk.... 20. i have a good relationship with all my neighbors. especially with deer hunting. if i can see it, i'm getting it. I'm calling or swinging by not too long after to let them know i did and what i got exactly. if i can't see it i'm getting a hold of them first. more for coordination of not screwing anyone else's hunt up and common courtesy. that's my situation though.

  25. Without that, everything else, and all goals are pretty much out the window..................grin. After last year, I'll take nothing for granted. # 1 for me, is still to see my grandson kill his first deer. He carries my torch when I can no longer participate. This year he will be 14. That opens up firearms season with a rifle. Last two years with bow, we just didn't get it done. This year a bow AND rifle kill would be so awesome!

  28. I used to think that too..... Went to get a new Customs form for a rifle this past year. Now, according to laws, there should be no record kept re. NICS etc by any Federal agency. They do run the serial number for stolen through a data base when one has the form done. Not only did Customs officer knew I took that rifle out of country in 2006(and where), she asked why i wanted a new form for ownership as she new I already had one approved in 2005! (new law for destination required a more recent date for import paperwork). Wonder where all them NICS checks are being stored. LOL

  30. Yes, you still have to abide by there gun laws. Including restricted areas. Read up on interstate gun travel. Locked and separate containers and you can only make stops for gas and food while traveling through states your not authorized to carry in. Go get your pa permit, show your ny 20 mins and $20 you’ll have more states.

  31. There are states that honor it. Make sure the map is right and that any of their state restrictions are followed. It's well worth the homework before driving across the state line. All that said, if you are staying on the ground for transportation you can only enjoy NY and VT.

  34. If I could see the deer from where I was standing at the property line , I would drag it back to the property I am allowed to hunt on . This past season I hit a deer that I thought was a doe . I tracked it all over some thick stuff . It went onto a neighbor's property that I have retrieval rights on . I called the land owner to let him know I was on his property . No problem . When I got back onto my SILs property , I decided to sit and wait as I was pushing a wounded deer . Got back on the blood trail and found the deer laying about 30 yards past the property line . It was a spike , not a doe. I dragged the deer back to my SILs side of the woods and didn't call the property owner whose number I had . Although the property isn't actually posted , I know that it is considered posted and I / we don't hunt on that property . For me , it would depend on who owns the property and do I know the owner . Often Posted Signs are up and do not have any name or other information on them so there is no way to contact the owner to ask permission .

  36. Guess I'm on par with most of the longtime NY hunters here. Well except Dinsdale and a couple others, of course!!! Wouldn't it be cool, to share a beer and a campfire with a guys like that? To hear some of those hunting stories would be absolutely captivating, IMO. One of these days I hope to do just that! Some of the odd ball stuff I've killed are...... Rattlesnakes, Copperheads and Cotton Mouths in SC and Fla. Wild boar in SC Gator in SC and Fla. A few Bobcats here in NY and a bunch in SC Coyote Fox, red and grey Possum Muskrat Mink Beaver (These last four shot not trapped.) Never shot a bear, though have had many opportunities. Maybe someday? Would like to hunt for elk and caribou someday. And who knows, if I can save up the coin. A trip to the Dark Continent with Dinsdale!

  39. They have begun nipping off the low hanging branches already. Usually towards the end of winter when we get a good wind storm, a few hemlocks will get snapped over. It doesn't take long before whatever needles are within reach are gone, stripping the fallen tree down to a bare skeleton. They will literally devour the entire tree. (minus the branches and trunk of course) Hemlock and some pines can be a big late season food draw when other pickins get slim and they usually don't have to travel far from their beds to find some.

  42. I am the antithesis of Dinsdale and Pygmy. I hunt deer. lol OK, I could add squirrels, fox, coyote, and even bear as potential targets of opportunity while hunting deer. And I could add turkey but I am so bad at it, I suspect a real turkey hunter would question whether I really "hunt" turkey.

  46. Did you see the list of un-SAFE Act provisions that Cuomo wanted, but didn't get? One of them was outright confiscation; his own party thankfully told him that would never fly. So what we have with this new recert law is basically a backdoor way to confiscate any and all firearms from a law-abiding citizen merely because they missed a poorly-advertised paperwork deadline. I certainly don't want to see anyone stripped of their property, but maybe such a case could make it to SCOTUS and ultimately end the blatant abuse of our Rights here in NY. No law-abiding citizen should need ANY government permission to own a firearm!

  47. Some dogs like the cold and some don't. Some people like the cold and some don't. I had a German Shepard/ Husky mix that wouldn't come in the house in the winter no matter what. And during the summer she hid under the deck most of the time. She was a cold-weather dog. She also dug out some pretty incredible 'snow forts' and tunnels.
