  2. After 28 years as a firefighter and Lt for the City of Rochester , I’m calling it quits ! What a struggle , I still love suiting up for the game , but its taken a tole on my body and my wife is older and retired , she smoked for 40 years ( quit two years ago ) its time to travel and do things while we can I guess. I love being the old crusty guy teaching the young snot face kids ,still Iove being the first guy through the door, but I just don’t move like I used to , it’s time to leave while I’m still “ whole “ , if carpel tunnel , two bad shoulders, arthritis, bad hip ,and nerve damage means “whole “, but I still got my looks ! 4. If you’d toast the best man I’ve ever known with your next beer I’d appreciate it. Lost my mom January 18th and my Pop just now. 71 years of marriage. He died from a broken heart and now is with the love of his life again. I’m so proud he went peacefully and without pain. I love you Pop. Easter won’t be the same nor anything No comments or replies necessary just hold up your next drink to Leo. I’m blessed Samantha got to really know them both. I never met any of my grandparents. He taught me how to put others before myself , that family always comes first , to do something right if you’re going to do it , too have fun ( cmon look at the slippers he wears for Christmas, he’s touched so many peoples lives and will be deeply missed by all Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  5. Shorten the beak and ditch the massive nose holes (or whatever they are called). Tiny little dimples would work. Other than that I think you got it. Its an alligator right?

  7. The robins are singing their wake up songs this morning. How I’ve missed that. Can’t wait to hear my first wood thrush blended in. Soon after pow!! The thunderous bellow of mr Tom letting me know he’s up. That our chess match will shortly begin. There simply is nothing better than listening to the woods come alive on a crisp spring morning. 9. "old age and treachery always overcome youth and skill" got a hunting buddy that is 70. Sends me pics of his deer every year and tells me he doesnt know if he can keep dragging them out. Always tell him i will be glad to come help even though I am 2 hours away. But he is stubborn and brings them out. I would be too i am sure. But being stubborn still gets him out there. His deer from last year!

  11. After a health issue last year, I asked myself this same question. The answer I found, in the eyes of my grandson and my lifelong hunting partner. As long as they hunt, so will I. I'm still acquiring hunting "stuff" at 61. Most all of it will be passed down or given away, to complete the circle for me. Though I've lost a step, and slowed down a bit in the woods, I don't consider that a bad thing. As now I savor each hunt and experience, much more than I did in my prime. As long as I can roll out of bed, to put on my boots, I'll be heading out. Even if it's just to sit there and smile.

  14. Went 1 for 3 this morning and landed this spawned out hen, how I landed her is beyond me, I knew I was fishing a risky spot due to being in between 2 logs but I don't worry about landing them until I hook up. She took it and went around on the inside of the log and went screaming downstream, long story short, 10 minutes later and wading out into 4' of rapids I was able to work her back. 15. Will hit the big Seven O this fall, as long as I am physically able I will continue to hunt, there is no doubt that I have slowed down a lot from when I was a young buck. I make a concerted effort to keep my weight under control and to stay fit enough so I can get in the woods among other things that require condition. As of now I can get along pretty well, dragged out the smallish 115 lb Deer I took last fall by myself with no problem, something bigger would have made me take it a little easier and would have taken more time to get things done. My favorite hunting has always been with dogs but Coon hunting days are pretty much over, following dogs at night through swamps and woods for hours and miles at times would be tough at this stage of the game. Most of the time I was by myself and you never know for sure where you are going to end up and if I happened to keel over and drop dead it may be tough to find and recover my old carcass. Sometimes I wish I was out in one of the western states where they ride mules when they hunt Coon. I still can get out and follow my bird hunting dogs without too much problem, a big plus. I do know that taking game is not so important to me as it once was, when a young guy if I did not limit out be it hunting or fishing that day was a bust. These days I think with a totally different perspective and admittedly have become a bit soft in my old age. Many times I have a critter in my crosshairs and do not pull the trigger and let them walk, in my mind they were as good as dead and on that particular day that was good enough for me as I just enjoy being out there. And then there are days when get the yen for some game meat, have the same type of scenario happen and I say as I draw down "kiss your ass goodbye" and dump whatever where it stands. As for hunting equipment it is part of the whole hunting picture and there seems to always be something that catches my fancy that I would like to try even though I have everything I need. New firearms and their accessories are my Achilles heel and I am still a buyer. When involved with a sport like hunting a whole lifetime and have to actually come to the point of calling it quits would suck big time and be depressing as Hell when Fall rolled around. Al

  16. Just do your own thing, Wooly. Commissioned work gets to be a pain in the butt. I had a lot more fun just building random furniture pieces and guitars and then selling them than I did making stuff at the direction of people who didn't really understand that I was doing it because I enjoyed it.

  17. Thanks a lot guys! (except you Doewhacker with your crocodile and nostril hole comments, lol) Hey man, I'm flattered you would ask. Unfortunately I just prefer to do whatever comes natural to me at the time I sit down with this stuff. I've done a few pieces for others that started off as one idea and over time they changed their minds and it turned out to be something completely different, and something I wasn't happy with myself.(even though they liked it in the end). Now I just do my own thing and if someone likes what they see and wants to give me their money for it, I'll be happy to take it! Custom designs just aren't something I like to aggravate myself with.

  18. You have to notice they never say "nobody wants to take away your right to own a gun". Truth be told, they want it to be a privilege granted by, and restricted by, the big government they long for. In their minds, if they impose all sorts of oppressive restrictions and you no longer meet the criteria to own firearms, they didn't take your guns away, you lost the privilege to have them. Therefore you're the bad guy and they're the good guys. That's leftist ideology being justified with convoluted thinking.

  19. When in camp this past Oct. I extended an offer to a 74 year old fellow who had never shot a game animal before to come along on a walk and he got his first ever in Africa with my rifle. Was great fun, made a nice shot too! I think hes hooked. He's still racing cars and flying; so he needs a new hobby IMO.

  22. About 10:30 I Walked outside to go meet a client. Wait... What was that... OMG is gobbling. On the neighbors land I hear several birds gobbling. I can see several hens on my land. ( Only own 1.8 acres) The gobblers were a couple hundred yards further. I grabbed a month call, and got them all fired up. I can't hunt that land, so I don't care if I educate them. I left my phone in the truck as I scrounged for some calls, so unfortunately no pics. I called 6 toms within 20 yrds while I was wearing jeans and a light blue sweatshirt. The sight of them strutting in the snow was something I've only seen a couple times over the years. Watched them dance around for over a hr. Needless to say, I was almost 2 hrs late to my meeting. Priorities, mind you. Lucky my client is a turkey hunting nut, and when I explained the delay, his only response was he wished he was there. Lol.

  25. That is not a definition. It is a description of what is required should a standing army of citizens be required for national defense. That actually may happen again some day. The Second Amendment is about the right of the citizen to be prepared to defend themselves (as individuals) and their nation (as a group) should the need arise. All arguments against the Second Amendment start with one premise: The individual is not a sovereign entity but is merely part of a collective, and therefore subject to the collective will. That's pure BS.

  26. The new tractor was delivered today. Already put her to work clearing snow piles out of the driveway and from our front walkway. We still had 2-3 feet of snow piles up in there. The sun doesn’t get into that area much plus with the gabled roof, it just falls off and piles up in that spot.

  28. I was out checking Trail Cams this week . I was considering moving stands later and maybe buying a couple more . When I got home , I was in the basement later and checked the peg board in my hunting part of the basement looking at a lot of the stuff that I had collected over the years and never used . I even have hunting clothes that I don't wear . A thought came to mind . I will be 77 this coming deer season . I started to wonder , how many more years could I keep up the hunting ? As long as I can draw the bow , climb a ladder stand , drag a deer and walk a couple miles , I will keep it up . It gets me up off my lazy butt and gives me some exercise . I doubt if there is any member older than me but how or when do you determine when to call it quits ? When do you decide that you have enough hunting gear and don't need any more ?

  30. I just reached the grand old age of 60 myself. Still feel young in mind and body. But still can't believe 60 years went by that fast. One secret is to have a mix of friends that are older and younger than yourself. The younger ones keep you fit by trying to keep up and the older keep you from over doing it. I just booked a sheep and grizzly hunt in the Yukon for 2019, so mind & body are still telling me to go for it!

  31. Eddie - If you are 77, who's the young guy in your photo? My father is 84 and he still shoots a deer every year, at least one. His hands don't work well so someone is always around to dress it and help him get it out. The UTV is also his during deer season. My 62 year old legs still work. It the 62 year old brain that's the problem.

  39. Always amazed about human edgenuity especially hunters to come up with ways to insure maximum results. Talk about a mega blaster! A punt gun is a type of extremely large shotgun used in the 19th and early 20th centuries for shooting large numbers of waterfowl for commercial harvesting operations and private sport. A single shot could kill over 50 waterfowl resting on the water’s surface. They were too big to hold and the recoil so large that they were mounted directly on the punts (a small skiff boat) used for hunting, hence their name. “Used for duck hunting” isn’t the right expression for aiming this piece of artillery in the general direction of a flock of ducks, firing, and spending the rest of the day picking up the carcasses.

  43. How does this article define the "Militia"? The Constitution is well understood to give power to the government only where needed and it bars the government from any powers not specified in the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. Of course the founders would give the power to organize the people in defense of the country if ever needed. You need to read the line that states, "employed in the Service of the United States". The people were called upon by the government when needed to defend the country, but they were still free men, autonomous and without conscription. They could refuse to fight without penalty. They were also free to organize against their own government if it ever turned on their freedom. If today's events were happening soon after the Constitution and Bill of Rights were ratified, the people would've been shooting by now.
    2 points
  44. it doesn't say the right of the militia to keep and bear arms. Remember the first 10 articles are restrictions on the government. They are not an outline of freedoms. In that context it is clear the meaning especially if the founding fathers' of written of the period is understood. The militia was the people. All the people.
