  1. After 6 years, 27 days of hiking, hundreds of rugged ADK miles and tens of thousands of feet of elevation gain, I finally reached my last summit on Haystack to become an ADK 46'R! I had been patiently waiting for a break in the continuous thunderstorm forecasts and made the decision to go on Saturday afternoon. To make this finish even sweeter, my close friend Jenny (#8022) surprised me with a call only hours before leaving Saturday night saying that she and her friend would love to join me. What an incredible surprise! We hiked all night (starting at 11:30 pm) and after breaking treeline I could have sprinted over Little Haystack and up to Haystack's summit! However, I wanted to share that moment and together we enjoyed a spectacular sunrise and jaw-dropping summit views. In fact, I'd rate Haystack's views and grueling 18 miles RT as the best I've experienced of all the 46ers.Normally I would share a more detailed story about the hike itself, but this day was all about my 46'R journey and the motivations behind it. I wanted to prove to myself that I could do this. I wanted to say "Thank You" to those in our military (since I could not serve) who provide the very blanket of Freedom that allows us to enjoy our Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness. I wanted to stare down and conquer fear and self-doubt by hiking nearly all of the 46 peaks solo, including several throughout the night with no sleep. I wanted to enjoy each mountain a certain way and patiently planned each hike to ensure success. And I wanted to share these amazing experiences with those who couldn't be there or those who might also be inspired in the same way that others inspired me. Ultimately, I completed the 46'R because of a very difficult reminder that Life is too short. Tomorrow isn't promised to me or any of us. What we do today and who we share our time with is what truly matters most! I appreciate all of the time everyone gave me in support of reaching this day. I may have completed my 46'R journey, but this isn't the end, it is only the beginning.

  2. Well after 14 years of aggravation of owning a 2003 Dodge Ram 2500 I decided it was time to get a replacement. I have been studing and looking over what has been available for several years and finally made up my mind that I was going with the Honda Ridgeline. Was bummed out when they stopped producing them in 2014 and happy when they did a bit of a redesign in 2017 and brought them back. It is the only truck with a unibody and many traditionalists in the truck world scoff at it but for me it will do everything I need a truck to do. And after dealing with that Dodge for so long this Honda makes me feel like I have died and gone to Heaven. Below are pics the dealer took, she is a slightly used 2017 with 10000 miles, took delivery last Friday. Al

  5. I may have built a few of the parts on your Ithaca. I worked there as a milling machine operator prior to my military service for about a year 1970-71. My starting hourly wage was $2.08 with $.08 shift differential. Most of my labor was piece work, so the goal was to make a lot more. And yes, those were union shop wages.

  7. Thanks again guys! Jerkman- I'm adding a pair of chainsaw chaps to my Christmas list. I watched a few videos on them and it's pretty amazing how even a cheap pair will bind up and kill a saw if it comes into contact with them. They don't work quite as well as the pricier name brand chaps, but they do work and something is better than nothing considering that femoral artery is a pretty important one,lol I know I should have them right now, but hopefully wont need them before then. Anyhow, I got a little more accomplished today on this guy. Layed some hair on him with the angle grinder.., got some rolls added to his neck..., put the burn on 'em with the torch.., and brushed on a coat of antique walnut stain mixed with the boiled linseed oil. About all that's left to do on him will be done with the Dremel. Eyes, nose, mouth, feet, and I'm going to carve a few bear tracks around the base and that should do it! Gonna pick up a gallon of spar varnish and I think that will finish him off quite nicely. Here's a few shots of todays progress.

  16. Hell, that's not way up in Maine. Allagash is way up in Maine. Just kidding. I love Moosehead (although it does feel almost "suburban" compared to northern Maine). This is cheating - this is not my setup, although I did partake of that meal. Pic taken on the Allagash River, a few miles south of the Canadian border. We did the Waterway and didn't see a house or an airplane for 7 days. And very few humans (a few moose, though, about two dozen Bald Eagles, and some nice brook trout). I could go there and never return. If I could figure out how to deal with the winters...

  17. I would move closer to the thick stuff. Most all of my set ups are very close to thick areas. I have very few wide open stands or blinds. The absolute key to doing that, is to set up for the prevailing wind. And you MUST be willing to move, if the wind changes to the deers favor. For really good spots, I may have three different set ups, within one hundred yards, to take advantage of most wind directions. Also, I won't hunt these big buck hot spots, until I know the big guys are on their feet and moving, in that area. I learned for an old timer many, many years ago, who said, "the closer you hunt to where they are bedded in the thick stuff, the more careful you need to be." I've found that to be very true.

  18. You can be banned from any forum just because the owner wants to for any reason. There is nothing in the Bill of Rights to stop it. Again NOTHING. Same as Youtube, FaceBook and every forum out there. To continue to say otherwise simply reinforces your total lack of understanding of the Bill of Rights. So by all means continue.

  19. You know what Youtube, Facebook, this forum and everyone like it has in common? None are required by the constitution to provide free speech. If you claim otherwise, it demonstrates your lack of understanding of the Bill of Rights. And this belongs in the political section.

  20. What? . U tube is not the government nor is it unconstitutional. So they also have to allow ANYTHING anyone wants to post? Nazi propoganda, Child porn, - You do realize they also ban stuff everyday as well as facebook etc. It is not up to them to offer everyones viewpoint - it is a business. So if you ever owned a business - do you have to put on your bulletin board anything someone from the public wants - NO you dont and its not unconstiutional . you need to read def of free speech https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/freedom of speech

  21. have you ever listened to what he has said??? He said the parents of Sandy Hook helped STAGE this tragedy , that it was a setup and never occurred etc. He hounded the parents about it. Its a LONNNGGG stretch to say CNN did anything like this. You tube is not a god of anything they decided that it was in their best interest , which it is. Its no different than the whole arguement of the cake place not wanting to make a LGBT cake. It is their business to decide. Free speech does not mean you HAVE to post the ramblings of a crazy person who is taking a terrible tragedy to draw attention to himself. Hes a POS and who wouldnt want to get away from him. Because you speak doesnt mean it doesnt come with reaction and consequences. You tube doesnt want you to turn the channel - so therefore boot this guy. No different than Brian Williams being booted from the news desk. He lied , they dont want to be associated with him so he was fired. They dont want people to " Change the channel" its a business just like Utube is.

  26. Pheeeew..., I didn't realize just how much wood I had left to remove from my latest bruin after getting him blocked out!My dream with all this carving stuff has been to carve some realistic animals at some point (preferably sooner than later), and I think I may have learned a few tricks along the way through all my screw ups that have got me a few steps closer to that goal. Here's a sneak peak of my day one blocking out of the log compared to where I left off yesterday.Still got plenty of work to do on him, and a few subtle changes to make, but man am I excited about how this one is coming along so far! I forgot to measure him, but he's probably in the 32"-36" range. This new saw package is such a step up from what I was working with in that electric model and I'm thinking there may be another one added to the line up shortly so I'm not wasting so much time swapping out sprockets, bars, and chains.

  35. I know. We had a house on Rockport Harbor years ago - before they raised the taxes thru the roof on waterfront property. I never cared for the Wells area. The Boothbays are ok, if you kayak. But it's all a bit touristy. Mid-coast has become just as bad. But yeah, most people, when you say "Maine", think of those areas, or Bar Harbor (eeek!). I recall many years ago, stopping at the (now gone) DeLorme map store in Yarmouth. Picked up a huge map of Maine, dining room table size. Got it home and spread it out (on the dining room table) and had this "wow" moment... the sliver of Maine I knew at the time was a tiny part of the state. There's not much there up in "The County". The logging roads that we went on were pretty rough. And yeah, there are not that many places where you can drive near the Allagash Waterway except on a few access roads, mostly. It is protected under federal and state law, and has a buffer zone. To get on the Waterway, you have to register your trip with the Rangers. But canoeing that waterway (river and lakes) is a magnificent experience. Did it with my son when he was only 11. He wasn't much use as a bow-man - I recall one morning one of our group was asking "who's paddle is this? Miles, is this your paddle?" and someone piped up, "Does it look like it's never been used?" A good laugh. But I assure you he will never forget that trip.

  36. A sheep grand slam is to take a ram of each of the 4 North American subspecies of wild sheep, Rocky Mountain Bighorn, Desert Bighorn, Stone Sheep and Dall Sheep.. Now the " Amish Grand Slam" is something different...Can't give you the details, but I think the main equipment requirement is a pair of knee high boots.... Jenny loves all animals ?? I'll bet she'd REALLY like ME <<smile>>…...

  38. Actually this whole thread is not really about constitutionality. There are no constitutional guarantees regarding these internet entities that really are a whole new form of political manipulation that has not yet been regulated, and may not ever be regulated until Democracy has drawn its last breath and the heavy hand of socialism finally has it's death-grip around our necks. Credit the left for having dominated most forms of media that forms public opinion. Understand that it is the left that has been able to control the educational institutions and bend the young skulls full of mush of entire generations to tolerate and encourage the pushing of Marxism and other such anti USA agendas and ideals. The educational system has been in their control for many, many decades. Take note that the left has found ways to turn our own freedoms against us and done so in a way that there is no defense. Don't blame these e-businesses for making use of our own free-speech guarantees. They are just seizing the vulnerabilities of our own freedoms and applying what has been drummed into their heads by the Marxist professors in their education that we paid for. There definitely are enemies of Democracy at work here, but there is no Constitutional argument to be made against them. They will use the Constitution right up to the day they abolish it.

  40. couldnt happen to a better guy - he is a POS! Hope the families of Sandy Hook bankrupt him. There is free speech - he wasnt arrested - thats what free speech is about. Doesnt mean what you say doesnt have consequences and that companies and people cant distance themselves , that is also freedom to make that decision. Hoping he falls hard. Hes made a lot of money off the backs of parents that have lost their children in a terrible tragedy, theres a special place in hell for this fella.

  43. Recurve, compound, car, truck and shotgun. One time while hunting I heard a commotion in a creek bottom and walked over to investigate. A young lad had wounded a small buck and run out of ammo. He was trying to finish off the hapless criiter by throwing small boulders at it. Fellow would not let me shoot "his deer". After several minutes I was able to talk him into using one of my slugs. I didn't realize until today that he was after the coveted "took deer by boulder" designation.

  44. Really, Really Nice! Your artistic talent is amazing to me. To take a log, and see that in there, then bring it out, is so darned cool. When I look at a log, all I see is firewood......... Looking forward to seeing him finished, after the Dremel details. The chaps will definitely save ya from leaking all over the place, after a slip. Hopefully you can get em sooner rather than later.
