  1. I started trapping a little last season after a 20 plus year hiatus. I have never trapped a bobcat before and made it my only trapping goal last year. Although I found some bobcat sign , I unfortunately came up short. So I decided to put out a few trail cameras after the season ended to hopefully get one on film. Unfortunately I had my first trail camera stolen in the process. Why people can't leave shit alone is beyond me. Anyway , I had the trail cameras out for 5 months and decided to get them and see what was on the cards. Most of the photos were of numerous deer , fox , coyote , squirrels , coons etc.... Much to my surprise I finally got a photo of one that has beautiful markings on it. I sure would like to get him this year.

  3. My favorite woods cartridge is fast becoming the 450bushmaster the problem has been that there wasn’t a rifle I wanted to tote chambered in it. That changed this year when I had a Remington 7600 rebaralled for the 450 now I have my new favorite cartridge in my favorite gun. Will a deer know the difference between the 450 or 35 Whelen probably not but I have all year to think about this stuff and only a split second to shoot my buck. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  4. Always paranoid when I do my last mowing of the season this time of year! I've been attacked on too many occasions by those damn-ground-nesting-nasty-tempered-yellow-jackets! I was on the lookout today to see if I stirred any up while mowing, but only got stung once (in the head! OUCH!!). While I was doing some ducking and weaving under some overhanging branches, I passed within ~5' of this very active nest, but never noticed it until my next lap that would have been at head level if I didn't notice it! Talk about doing some back peddling!! You can see to the left of the nest, how close I came to it on my previous pass! I can't believe they didn't attack! I was man-handling that branch as I passed under it, trying to keep the branches out of my face.

  5. Many years ago, when I was a mere wisp of a lad, a neighbor boy and I were out behind my Dad's barn with our BB guns, looking for prospective targets... We spotted a yellow jacket nest and decided it would be a good idea to shoot at it.. We learned VERY quickly that it was NOT such a good idea...

  7. hard to get pumped when it's 90 degrees out with 80% humidity. i think a lot of people get burned out when they put in lots of time and can't get over not tagging deer enough for their efforts. it's nice to commit to the season though and decompress, relax, and let things not be so busy or urgent. how i keep my sanity.

  8. I have had ups and downs with deer hunting, last year was a down year for me for a few reasons. One thing I really do enjoy is watching that sun rise and set and simply thinking about life and nature. Just seeing deer makes me happy, probably why I don't shoot them so much but simply enjoying the woods and some good company sometimes gets your mind off bad things and back on track with being optimistic an in the right frame of mind. Good luck this year, get out and enjoy, never know how many years you have left so take advantage while you can and get out! One of my goals is to try and get a new friend a deer this year, I have found more enjoyment from teaching and helping others than actually taking one for myself. Sometimes all it takes to get you back into it is one good day in the woods, good luck, hope you get out often!

  13. Nothing! NYS has a swamp of its own and just like the federal govt. the Republicans seem to have plenty of representation in that population of swamp dwellers. They are all buddies, and nobody wants to upset the balance or all the goodies that are coming their way.

  22. i don't think you could ever get a true answer to your question simply because every property is different. my best stand is right in my friends backyard, I can see his house from it when the leaves start falling. I see way more deer there than at my inlaws place where we gotta walk about a mile or so to our stands. but I see much bigger bucks there so it's a trade off. the only way your gonna find out is to scout and hunt. set up trail cams if you can and check for sign. for me I gotta hunt around my work schedule so if I have all day ill usually go to the inlaws. if I get out of work early enough i'll go sit in my friends backyard for a few hours. only way to really find out is to get out there and hunt

  27. grew up using green box Cor-lokts in 150gr. I've since switched to Federal Fusions in 150gr. seem to be really good terminal performance. I've also been told to switch to 180gr for big woods and lots of cover. honestly hitting any kind of brush will defect the bullet all the same as both the 150 and 180 have the same profile. i've used 180s and feel like they punch through more retaining energy (now wasted) after it's left the animal due to the added weight. the 150's i feel dump energy into the animal more but still have undeniably enough to punch to carry through any part of the animal through and through at those ranges. only reason i'd change is to go to a higher BC for longer range past 300 yards.

  33. 35whelen is one of my favorite cartridges I currently have 8 rifles chambered in it, 2 single shots “H&R, CVA” 3 semis “rem 7400, rem 750, browning bar” 2 pumps “both 7600’s” and a bolt “tilka t3.” Have had phenomenal luck with them when it comes to killing deer with all but one dying in sight. The 35whelen is an absolute hammer. With the way I hunt my biggest concern is getting 2 holes no matter the angle. I’ve killed 9 deer with them four being over 200lbs and have only recovered 1 bullet and that was a hard quartering away shot on a 225lb buck the bullet entered the rear ham and was found hanging out of the skin just below the white patch of his neck. I shoot 225gn Barnes ttsx’s hand-loads running about 2800fps from 18” barrels. There is plenty of recoil, you definitely know when you shoot one but not at all abusive other than in my under 6lb scoped and loaded tikka, that one isn’t much fun to shoot. One of my favorite parts about the 35whelen is how versatile they are, I carry my peep sighted 7600 for bunnies and squirrels loaded with 110gn cast bullets at about 1000fps. I know people who pay big money for them as Adirondack decor for there living space just pick it and put in and air free bag and got area and let set for awhile to make sure there all dead then spray a dealer on it to preserve. I've seen them sell for up to a hundred dollars depending on size and condition.

  36. Love wild blackberries, there are quite a few on my property. My dad grows a blackberry variant where there are no thorns on the stems and the blackberries are 4x the size of a wild one. He also makes a great jam from blackberries.

  37. Watched a little more than three quarters of the Bills game before I nodded off. I liked what I saw from the QBs. Peterman looked sharp in that first drive. 7-7 and a TD against what was mostly Carolina's starting defense. He looked like a poised NFL QB. McCarron was good after a slow start. Allen got a TD and took a couple of good NFL hits that didn't rattle him. I like rookie Harrison Phillips, you can tell he loves being a Bill - got his first sack last night. It's only preseason, I couldn't care less about the score. I made a big batch of Bills Koolaid to drink for the next few days!

  41. I think the Au Sable River is time dependent at times as well. When we used to camp at Taylor Pond a lot when I was a teen and into my early 20's, we would fish it from around Au Sable Forks east and south, it was hit and miss on some days. We got to the point where we just fished the lake at the campground, always limited out. That was trout and salmon. Bass, we would hit Franklin Falls and Union Falls. Funny, I was just talking to the wife saying I want to get a week camping in at Taylor next Summer. Been a long-long time.

  47. I'm hoping as the season gets closer, I will get more excited. But honestly, since spring, I have been far too busy with EVERYTHING! I really am not that stoked about hunting this year at all. Been out on the boat twice, that's it. Last year health issues kept me down. Those same issues are starting to give me trouble again lately. Back to the doc's right after Labor Day. I hope to help my grandson get his first deer this year!! I do look forward to that! But other than that, if I go, I go. No big deal. Very difficult to draw my bow anymore as well. Just not feeling it......... Hunting for me now is more about R and R, than killing deer.

  48. I've never fished in in the fall but I have caught some slammer eyes and small mouth in there. I would think unless we get a cool down, water temps will still be up a bit and the brown will still be down, but the lake is only 70' deep. Not sure if you have down riggers or not but if you don't it would be a good lake to run some dipsies on.
