  9. A lunch buffet at the Phelps Hotel for my Mom's 80th birthday today with about 35 friends and family. Sorry, no food pics, but everything was excellent. Crab cakes, stuffed chicken tenders, quesadillas, little roast beef sandwiches with every kind of topping & insert imaginable, an ossobucca-style pizza, too much to mention. No one left hungry. An enjoyable afternoon. And my Mom, who rarely says a word about these things, stood up and said that she is officially as old as dirt. I had tears in my eyes. God bless you Mom!.

  12. I spent 21 hours in the woods in the last 2 days hanging 14 stands. Good news is I'm done in the woods till hunting season other than checking deer cams. I'm beat, but feels good to be ready for oct 1.

  14. I remember back in the 60's and 70's when I was still hunting from treestands, there wasn't a whole lot of talk about safety harnesses. I'm not even sure there were any available, or maybe I just wasn't aware of them. But as time went on there was some talk about treestand safety and a lot of us began the very unsafe practice of simply tying a rope around our waist and then to the tree. I rigged one up that incorporated an old VW Beetle lap belt latch mechanism that had a push button latch release which was a little more safe, but still could leave you landing horizontal with a back-snapping jolt to the waist. most arrangements back then were perhaps more dangerous than the problem they were supposed to solve. I am not sure when the first full-body harness safety restraints were introduced, but I believe that regular widespread use of them is fairly new-ish (recent decades). Today most designs are fool-proof, and there is no reason why anyone should go up in a tree without a proper harness on.

  15. I only hunt from a ladder stand. And we put double and triple ratchet straps on each stand . Have seen where squirrels and chewed them before. Not cool. So we put 4 ratchets on each one , and replace them often, then each stand has a shooting rail and the tree strap ready to go for a harness. And if it is icy then it's a day to hunt on the ground. Already 3 points of contact for each climb up.

  20. You’re absolutely correct, does a 35whelen kill a deer any deader than an 06 probably not any deader than an 06 does a 270 or 308 does a 7mm-08. But if that was the justification for any new gun purchase we would probably all still be using 30-30’s. A 35whelen has an advantage of being able to do more with a heavier bullet than on 06, I justify the 35whelen because it penetrates better and with still hunting and tracking I don’t ever get to shoot at broadside deer. With a 35whelen I know no matter if the buck is facing me or away from me that if I do my part the bullet will make it to the vital and come out the other side giving me two holes. I killed a lot of deer with an 06 and I will say I recovered more bullets from the 06’ than I have the Whelen. That is in no way scientific or even quantifiable but having shot about 10 deer with the Whelen I have not yet been disappointed with the results it I was never disappointed with an 06 or any other rifle cartridge that I’ve killed deer with other than 223 and 243. Does that make it worth having the added expense if you don’t reload maybe not? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  22. Sobering stats noted in this year's NY Hunting & Trapping Guide. Last year 6 of 12 tree stand incidents were fatal due to no harness (5) or harness not attached to the tree (1). There were (3) non-fatal injuries without a harness and (3) non-fatal injuries with unattached harness. I'd hate to see anyone here have a fall. Please use a lifeline and/or a lineman's belt when hunting from a tree stand this season. All of these accidents are preventable.

  35. I don't hunt from a treestand without a harness . I don't want to be a statistic . I also won't hunt from a stand that require screw in steps to get to it .

  36. I have to admit I wasn’t responsible in this capacity for a long time. I’ve been hunting for many years just like a lot of guys on this forum. I’ve just started using a harness. I don’t know what I was thinking all those years going up the tree without one on. Guess it has to do with the “young-invincible mentality”. I wear one now but feel somewhat lucky I never did take a fall. It should be a must every single time....

  37. Back in the day was huge nails as steps and a couple of 2x6's as the platform. I don't know how we didn't have more accidents. Be safe folks it just takes one moment and your life could change forever. Good post!

  41. I once perched in the tops of trees with a chainsaw tied to me for a living. For money. I was always tethered to the tree. Always. I never saw any reason to mess with that just because I was hunting rather than taking down a tree. As comfortable as I was climbing trees on a daily basis, I never forgot exactly where I was and the hazards of not being aware at all times.

  42. Tough to beat a medium to heavy weight bullet from a medium bore ( .33 TO ,38) caliber rifle, when shooting at the south end of a rapidly departing northbound deer, or elk for that matter...Elmer Keith knew that from his experience hunting elk in black timber..
