  4. Old truck restoration, a topic near and dear to my heart. Check out my latest purchase .... a 1979 F-150 Ranger, 72k original miles, NC truck, everything, literally everything, original and still working perfectly. One owner. The original wheels and hubcaps, and even LUG NUTS, were in the tool box. NO RUST. None. 302 purrs like a kitten. My son and I took 3 days to drive it up thru the Appalachians, on backroads, up to NY. His comment, "Wow, this place is just beautiful." Yes. It is. Nothing like the NC mountains and a good ole Ford truck!

  8. My 2001 Chrysler Town & Country finally gave it up. It wouldn't pass inspection because of the rusted frame, and then the power steering let loose again for the 7th or 8th time. it's parked in my driveway waiting for a salvage hauler. The motor and tranny are good, so I'm hoping for more than the usual $200 junk deal. It was a great and dependable construction work vehicle for ten years, and I won't say anything bad about it. I'll miss it. So long old friend. The new (to me) truck is a 2000 Ford Ranger. I know, it's older than what I just had, but it has a lot less miles and fewer annoying issues. The side panels on the bed look like crap, all rusted out, but the cab is perfect and it runs and drives great. I don't know if we have any Ford Ranger fans here, but the prices have skyrocketed since Ford discontinued the line. I had one back in the late eighties and it was a great truck. Just needed to gloat/vent after a long day of dealing with the paperwork. I'll post some pics when I can. "I'm on the road again." Almost two weeks of being homestead-bound had me going nuts.

  9. I guess there is a silver lining? I went out yesterday (with the new owners permission) to remove my stands. I down loaded the on X hunt app on my phone and used it to flag the property line as I have permission to hunt the piece to the west of this piece. I had to move 3 stands total but 1 of my food plots is literally 99% on the property i still have permission! I had to move my stand about 20 ft. i also found out that a large section of my mowed lane is on the other piece. It appears that I will have to park on the road and cross a creek but i will still be hunting the area!

  10. Started this hobby almost 4 years ago. My grand daughter Cadence. One of her favorite sayings is "Catskill Mountains". She lives with my daughter 4 hours away in God forsaken NJ. I'm expecting an expansion on this hobby in November too. A male addition I'm told.

  13. 9/15/2018 I was called at 9:30 this morning to track a bear in Pierrepont. Luna and I arrived at 11:00 and headed deep into the woods in a wagon being pulled by a 4 wheeler. The hunter had been walking out after morning watch when the bear coming running by at 70 yards. He believes he hit the bear too far forward, using his 300 win mag. He had only tracked for 30 or 40 yards before backing out and calling me. We started at the hit site where the bear had gone down, and had then jumped up and ran off. There was a small amount of blood and hair. Luna immediately locked on and off we went. We followed a very light, sporadic bloodtrail for half a mile, then nothing for the next quarter mile. Temps were in the mid 80's, so I stopped Luna many times for water and a breather. This bear had not been pushed and never bedded down in 3/4 of a mile, so I called the track at that point. Hopefully the hunter gets another crack at it.

  21. Saturday made the annual trip to Montauk. This place NEVER disappoints! Had the boat limit of stripers and a handful of blues by 8:30 AM, so we bottom fished for jumbo porgies and sea bass the rest of the day. A nice steady pick of quality fish! Ceviche on tonight's dinner menu. It has been a tough summer as far as charter fishing goes, I had quite a few trips either cancelled or rescheduled until next year due to either weather or boat malfunctions. I was watching the marine forecast all week, 7-10 foot waves forecast for Long Island, but finally laid down some Saturday, and we braved the ride through NYC to get there. I have a reschedule planned for this weekend coming up to fish for walleyes in Erie, PA, fingers & toes crossed!!

  25. So what other hobbies do you guys have besides hunting? I don't have the luxury of living "upstate" in the woods (even though I wish I could). I think my hobbies would be slightly different if I did. Anyways, besides spending as much time as I can at our property upstate, real life gets in the way all the time. I've been building, flying and racing drones for well over a year now, it is a blast. It is an expensive hobby, but its to much fun to explain, it satisfies the geek and adrenaline junkie in me. The drones / quads are from FPV (First Person View) meaning you wear goggles, its as if you are sitting on the thing. Few pics / vids:

  32. If you want to try this method without the expense of buying special equipment, all you need is a large sauce pot and a thermometer. Heat the water in the pot to 135-140F. Check and adjust water to maintain temp while cooking. I've cooked backstraps like this at my hunting camp using a six pack beer cooler and finished by searing on a grill over a hard wood fire. It was food fit for a king.

  36. Radishes and turnips have been great for me. I have been plotting an old hay lot for 3 years. I do till with tractor though. In the spring when what's left of the deer ravaged brassicas are rotten away (enjoy the smell) they leave loosened soil. Last March I did frost seed some clover and it caught well. I also have been liming every year. I have used clover blends, better chance of getting growth if one strain doesn't do as well especially with wet feet. I Planted Whitetail Institute clover and Hancock's killer clover late July along with birdsfoot treefoil, clover is several inches tall. Thanks late summer rain. Never used an annual clover, why not plant the PERENNIAL and see how it goes. Nitrogen is nitrogen. If I just wanted to add organic matter I would plant clover and cereal rye mix in spring over the old brassicas. Then decide in July if I wanted to mow and nuke them seed some or all of the plot to brassicas again. Here's my summer planted clover with a month of growth.

  38. Today I hung 2 more stands, used the weed whacker to clean up about half of my trails, raked all of the sticks and old leaves off of trails going to all but 1 stand and checked up on the plots. My brassica plot looked pretty low when I was driving up, so I checked It and it looks like the deer are hitting it really hard already. I forgot To get a containment cage in and now I’m kicking myself. There’s no way this plot is going to last into late season. I’ve never had brassicas get hit this hard this early. I also did some glassing this evening. Saw 2 of my “hit listers” and another buck that’s on Haley’s radar feeding in a hay field down the road This coming weekend I have 1 more double set to hang, and I’ll check my cams 1 last time before season starts. I’ve put a lot of work I to This place this summer. Almost time to enjoy all of my work!

  39. OK, so you probably won't believe this, but it's true - when we bought our house in Westchester (10 years ago), there were TONS of ratcoons (as my then 4 year old called them) in our backyard. It's a rocky hillside, with lots of "caves", some of them very large (really, you can shine a flashlight into them, and they're the size of of a small NYC apartment). Our predecessors here, a nice elderly couple, reportedly thought they were "cute", and fed them (much to the dismay of the neighbors). One night right after we moved in, we counted 32 - that's right, thirty-two - of the little bastards at once, on the rocks behind the house. Probably six families, each with their own "cave". The hillside smelled awful of ratcoon poop, and the filthy things were ridden with parasites. I HATED THEM. I mean, I don't hate much (other than D*ke University, a word my children are forbidden to speak), but I HATE raccoons. It has taken me 10 years to get rid of them. I tried trapping, had several "have-a-hearts". This required picking up the traps with beast inside (heavy), lugging the damn thing to my truck or car (disgusting), carrying them far away (waste of time and gas), and releasing them (risky, the little bastards are mean when released) (also I was spotted once doing it by some do-gooder who gave me a hard time). I eventually took to shooting the damn things. I bought a high-end PCP pellet rifle, and loaded a few of them up with pellets. They didn't die. Amazing, how tough these filthy critters are. Finally, I went back to the traps. But no, I'm not wasting my time and gas driving them up-county to release (only to be harassed by jerks), I took them into the garage, put the trap down on a large garbage bag, and put a single .22 hollow point into the head of each one. Instant death. Humane (if you care), and clean. Then I put the carcass in a garbage bag with a bunch of other garbage, and on the street. At this point, I seem to have only one family hanging on. I'm thinking of using my new crossbow to take these out. Nice practice, quick and clean. Cost - a broadhead and possibly an arrow per critter. I can live with that. I HATE RACCOONS.

  40. I've changed string and cable five or six times. This was top of the line bow when new. And there has been more than once, that I almost bought a new bow. But nothing else, feels like an extension of my arm like this does after so many years. Basically just point and shoot for me now. Still put a pass through on the buck I killed last year. With my bad shoulders, I think every year will be my last with the bow. Me and this old Mathews will retire together.

He just happened to be in town and tacks met him at 9 AM and had it ready and dropped off at the academy before he made the 1 hour drive back to camp. Thanks again tacks.

  44. This past weekend I got another 2 sets hung, freshened up my mock scrapes and checked trail cams. Plots are really starting to grow now, with bulbs and tubers forming in the brassica plot. When I was freshening up one of the mock scrapes, and trying to decide which tree to hang a stand in, I heard a rustling and looked up the hill to see 2 big doe and a fawn browsing my way. I backed up to the tree I was need, leaned up against it and remained still. The wind was in my favor as long as they continued in the direction they were heading. All 3 of them ended up slowly walking by at 15 yards, barely taking any notice of me even though I was in blue jeans and a red sweatshirt. I kept still until they were gone and then looked at the tree I was leaning against. That was right where I was putting my stand lol. When I checked the trail cam in that area, I saw alot of buck traffic. In fact, all of my cams had a large increase of buck activity on them. The food plots in particular have become hot beds of deer activity. I have added 3 bucks to my "hit list" for at home. Haley has a bunch more to choose from. Activity at the other farm is picking up as well. I am seeing some good bucks pop up on my cell cam, but only 1 so far that Im at all interested in. I had added my trail cam app to Haleys phone so that she gets the pictures also. Every time one of the bigger boys steps in front of the cam, I get a text from Haley saying "Oh my god Dad!!!!! Look at the pictures that just came through!!!!!". Makes me smile to see how excited she is for this season. I also took a drive over to one of the farms I wont be hunting much this year and yanked one of my stands down to use at home. It was hung over a plot that I had planted a strip in winter rye and Ladino clover last year as an experiment to see how well that works. The rye had been mowed and the clover was thick and lush. If my plot at home turns out as well as that one, I will be ecstatic. Below are pics of it.
