  4. l've been hunting for 20 years now...with my father and a few friends by my side all of those years...I have seen numerous big deer with the bow and just have never been able to seal the deal...on 11/5 at 9:03 I finally got a poke at what I knew was a good deer...he strolled by at 38 yards and I slipped one off...I knew the shot ended up a tad low so I met with my father and backed out of the woods for 4 hours...after a dicey track job with my pops by my side... when we finally came upon him it finally sunk in that I had finally sealed the deal on a good one...the rollercoaster of emotions throughout the day is only understood by a hunter...its a day and a memory that I will always charish...10 score able pts and 205lbs dressed on the scale...

  6. Finally got a buck down today! Not the biggest bruiser in the woods but with the bow season winding down I decided to take him. He came into the right of me and continued up the hill. I grunted at him twice and he turned and came to 13 yards of the treestand. When I shot he acted like I didn’t even hit him and just walked off. Straight down the trail. I waited about 1 1/2 hours then went to check the arrow. It looked good so I started blood trailing. After about 50 yards it looked like someone poured red paint down the trail. He went 142 yards and piled up. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  11. After the morning I figured it was gonna be my worst day ever in the woods. At 730 a two doe came running through with 4 bucks chasing them hard. 2 of the bucks chasing were shooters. I grunted to get one of them to stop and he turned and came to 20 yds to investigate. As I drew my bow I heard a snap and there was no tension on the string. Something got in between the cam and the string and knocked my string off the cam, so I had to watch the wide 8 point walk away. I packed up my stuff in a fit of rage and went home to get my old bow to try and salvage the rest of the day. Shot for 15 minutes out back then headed back to my stand. At 430 that afternoon I was watching a doe by my stand and I glance behind me and saw this guy bee lining it for her. He had a couple branches with leaves in his antlers, but I new he was a shooter. Made a good 10 yd shot on him, but bumped him walking out so I recovered him in the morning. Still can’t believe how it all happened.

  13. Deer Search will not go on any property that permission has not been granted. I will not pile on here. But there is so many things about this, that really should be reflected upon, and learned from.

  23. Gotcha. I have to go to a wake tomorrow so I cant be much help, but I think it's worth a look. Liver shot is a dead deer. If you aimed any higher than low heart, you most likely have a high hit since he prob dropped with the far shot. Both liver and high hits typically don't have great blood trails. Usually drips. Liver shot deer want to bed within 100. If you bumped him he prob only went another 100 or so. If I had to guess, you might have hit high liver and the lack of blood/ why you lost it is because he was running. You may want to focus on finding hoof tracks Vs blood till you get back on it. If you want any kind of assistance you can pm me and I'll give you my cell. If not, this forum is loaded with knowledge to help with recovery. If you can, get a dog out there cause they have the nose and any tracker would be willing to go after a liver hit deer. Im hoping you consider the fact you took the shot and wounded, and that buck deserves every effort to be recovered. Coyote bait or not, my .02 is you owe it to the deer. Good luck !!!! 24. You need to buck up and do everything you possibly can to find that deer! That is the ethical thing to do as the hunter, that pulled the trigger on this animal. You have someone with the experience, kindly willing to help you. Take advantage of every opportunity.

  27. I hunt mostly from natural ground blinds. Last year, opening week of gun season, I wasn't feeling too good, and was hunting from one of my best blinds. Was in there for a few hours and had not seen a thing! Decided to pack it up and go get warm. So I did something I "NEVER" do! Stand up, before doing a 360 degrees look around. Yup.....coming in from my back left, was the number one buck on the property! I got just enough of a look at him, as he was bounding away into the swamp to sink my spirits, and to kick myself for the rookie mistake. Had a very nice 8 pt last Monday at 30 yards, to my right, standing in some very thick brush. He caught me moving into position for a shot, when he stepped out. A five minute stare down resulted in him going back the way he came. I should have waited, he probably would have walked to my front. I got too anxious. This is my 45th deer season. I still make mistakes that cost me deer. And over all the years, many deer lived another day due to my blunders! It's all part of what makes hunting so fun, and at times, frustrating!!!

  31. Regardless of all of the factors you describe I would be out looking for that deer at first light after securing permission this evening. I've looked for wounded deer for 2 days because I can't rest easily until I know I did everything I could to find it.

  32. No, offense but I would not take 50 yard shots . 30 years of killing them with compounds ,never shot more then 25, my crossbow I limit to 30 ish . Seldom need to “track” them . Just a thought . Maybe you’ve killed a stack of deer at 50 , I don’t know but that’s not a starting distance.

  37. I use a marlin 336 in 35 caliber and love it. Its over 50 years old (my dads) and is a gem, flat out knocks deer down in a hurry, short barrel, compact, lite and very easy to handle. Because of short barrell its very maneuverable in a treestand or blind. When climbing up my mountain, i strap it to my back pack and dont even know its there.

  39. Out for an early morning sit prior to work in 3G. Situated at a pinch point in a rock wall overlooking hardwood flats. West wind and about 50 degrees. Hunting from the ground pinched between two trees growing next to a rock wall. About 10 mins after legal, heard rustling to the east and figured squirrel. Then saw movement, nice bodied young deer. Spike with slight fork on one side. Unfortunately, dead in the wrong spot with the wind. He made his way to the pinch point and pauses. Licks his nose heavy and worked the wind. I knew he would wind me. Looking dead at me but no clue I was there. He continues to work the wind and then smells me. Tail up and turns, slow run off back where he came from. Stops and looks over his shoulder, then walks 90 degrees parallel to me. Slowly moving, nosing through the leaves and munching on mast. I wait for him to step behind a tree and draw. He moves forward, completely broadside and I bleat to stop him. About 10+ yards away. Relax, let the arrow go, hear the arrow hit him and pass through. He kicks and runs about 50 yards, then slow walk off along a ridgeline. Watch him walk off and mark the point of visual loss. Uggh, I am thinking miss, liver or non-fatal hit. Gave it 30 minutes before I looked for arrow. Found the arrow embedded in a rotted blow down. Heavy dark blood. Uggh, liver shot. On the fence on what to do. Let him sit and search later or push him. I go back to point of impact. No hair visible, track is clear but no blood. Uggh again. Decide to leave him be but walk along a ridge that I can glass back where I lost him. Sit down on the ridge and hit the binos. Spot white belly. Dead deer. Go back to the point of impact and trace his trail. Not a spot of blood visible. Spike is stone dead when I get there. Very little blood outside his body or in bed. Body cavity was filled with blood when I field dressed him. Liver was shredded. In hindsight three mistakes. I'd love to tell you the deer turned on the shot and that's why I hit back, but I'd be lying. First, mistake was target panic, I aimed for deer and not a spot. Second, I pulled the shot and had poor follow through. Third, I didn't follow the arrow and confirm point of impact. I am fortunate and grateful for having taken and found the deer quickly. It was my first recurve kill and I have plenty to learn. Deer is hanging, cavity packed with ice and ready for skinning quartering tonight. Not a p&y but a trophy to me and will provide good food for the family. Many thanks to Moog for giving me advice on getting started with the recurve. I probably will bring out the crossbow to fill doe tags, but bring the recurve back out for regular season. Sent from my Moto E (4) Plus using Tapatalk

  40. The book says " must be displayed on the middle of your back". If you are wearing it on your pack (like I do ) it is in the middle of your back. When I get in a stand it is still on the pack and usually visible. If someone doesn't like it ts. If it is on the middle of your back and you have a pack on it isn't visible

  41. Hunting the AM again! Excited, I needed to see some deer movement, was getting a bit worried, I overhunted it last year, or something. Deer are definitely moving here now, saw that spike pushing that doe allll over, back and forth. On the 37 mile ride home, saw a big tall spike, or 3 pointer in a very BAD spot for him to be on the road, and in another spot saw a deer jet all spastic in the road. May not sound like much, but we have big tracts of woods here, where you either see no deer, or a lot. I have a good feeling about the morning.
