  1. Finally able to upload pic of the buck I got on 11/9. Main frame 10Pt with a 1" kicker off one of his bases making him actually an 11Pt! This is the buck that I've called my #1 from trail cam videos and posted a trail cam pic of him in velvet from August. I almost had a shot at him on 11/7, drew back bow on him on 11/7 @ 30 yards but couldn't get a clear shot before he bolted away after a doe...he was walking directly at me at about 40 yards and then was broadside at 30 yards behind a tree, of course with his head sticking out of 1 side and his back end sticking out of the other side while the doe was about 25 yards from me. Then she bounded away taking him with her ... tried grunting and some doe bleats but to no avail, so no shot that day. Then he came through cruising alone on 11/9 and offered a clear shot @ 28 yards!

  2. Finally got it done today in this crazy wind. First bow kill after 2 seasons of learning. 7ptr came in hot at about 20yrds. Let it fly and he ran about 40-50 yards. Slick trick left a nice trail to follow. Pumped is an understatement. Glad I finally get to contribute to the thread with a deer on the ground. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  3. Took this guy at 40ish yards(I think 42) on the ground today. He either turned or was quartering to more then I thought ,the arrow came out by the back leg . Light snow on the ground made for an easy track that would have been tricky with little to no blood .

  4. Not the largest buck I have ever shot but it will certainly be the most memorable with my little girl sitting next to me.

  6. My uncle calls me about 530 and ask what I’m doing. Automatically I know what’s up so I ask him where are you and how big. He went out to a piece of property we have permission to hunt in Pendleton. I jumped at the chance to help because I’ve never had the pleasure to take my little guy out and track/drag. It’s definitely a memorable experience I loved it and so did he!

  7. Killed mine Friday morning......6pt at about 10 yards. The shot angle was steep and he was quartering towards me. Hit the back of either one or both lungs and down through all kinds of things. At the shot he took a couple bounds then started walking slowly away and waging his tail in that "odd" way. I watched him for probably 2 minutes before he disappeared in the goldenrod. I figured I'd give him at least two hours and then take a walk. I went back to my buddies and had a cup of coffee and some toast. At the 2 1/2 hour mark I figured I better get moving, it had started to snow real lightly. I went down into the basement to get dressed, my buddy came down and we ended up BS'ing for 20 minutes or so. I climbed the stairs and opened the Bilco door to a BLIZZARD. SOB........ I quickly drove over and got into the woods were I last saw him. (back up for a second; when I was still in the stand after shooting him I could see all kinds of blood where he was walking with the binos so I knew he was leaking good) I got on the blood fast but it was covered in 2-3" of snow and it was coming down harder and harder. Making it more difficult was the way it was piling up on the branches, brush and ME. Sometimes the only way to see the blood was after walking a likely trail then going back and seeing it in my boot tracks. I'd catch some blood on the goldenrod and other brush too after I got into a second stand of incredibly thick pines. I was soaked, beat up and getting dejected with all the snow. It was getting worse..... I took the trail to a power line right of way and for the life of me couldn't tell if he stayed in the pines, crossed the ROW, back tracked, zigged or zagged. From the shot he'd gone about 150 yards and never bedded that I could see. I quit..... The day before I'd shot a coyote and couldn't find it. Between the 'yote and this buck I was beating myself up pretty good. I went back to my buddies, took my soaking wet clothes of, hung the bow up to dry out and had some lunch. I laid down for 15 minutes and couldn't sleep. I had brought two rifles with me and wanted to confirm zero so I did. It was about 3:00 now and the snow had changed to rain. I noticed that much of the snow on the brush around camp had either blown off or was dropping due to the (slightly) warmer temps and rain making me think I better get my ass back over for another look. I quickly swapped out some clothes and headed over. Within minutes of getting there I was at the spot I "lost" blood. I went to the north just 15' past my mostly gone boot tracks from earlier and there he was, deader than a door nail. I assume he was covered in snow at the time and so was all the surrounding brush making him darn near impossible to see. I quickly dressed him of in the failing light and headed back to camp for my buddy the Honda Foreman. I honestly can't remember the last time I was so soaking wet, from the waist down I was drenched from the rain and wet snow. Sorry the pic suck as I was not in the mood to snap any hero shots in the sow hole where I gutted him. The barn was drier....... My face looks like I'm having a stroke, I think it was just 'cause I had snot pouring out of my beak. Persistence paid off and I was thrilled with the outcome.

  8. Last bow sit for me. I’m planning on hunting morning and evening with just a small break in between to take care of some stuff. This is my third year with a bow and have yet to harvest anything. I’d sure like to take one today. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  10. A few weeks ago, I pulled The trigger on a Redneck 6x6 Buck Palace 360 and the 15 foot tower. Getting it in place and together was a bit of a project. Actually more of one than I thought It would be. I got My tractor buried in the mud getting the blind to the back of the property, plus 2 other times standing the thing up. Yesterday morning I finished Things up with it, and let me tell you, it was worth it. We are going to get so spoiled hunting out of this thing. I’ll take some pics of how it looks from up there this afternoon. I’m gonna go sit in it for the evening with Haley for one last archery hunt of the season. I’m really looking forward to the gun opener next weekend.

  11. Pains me to say this, but I CHOKED this morning and missed one of the bucks that I've been after! I couldn't believe that I actually laid eyes on him for the first time, other than trailcam pics. That SOB had me shaking!! I looked over and saw him 80 yards away, just staring at my doe decoy! That's what brought him to me, as he was heading in the opposite direction! He slowly made his way to the decoy. I had it all planned out in my head when I would be drawing and shooting. When he got to 30 yards, he unexpectedly veered off the path. I wasn't sure if he was just going to circle and get downwind of the decoy or if he lost interest. I panicked, and without realizing it, just rushed the shot and didn't follow through! I launched the arrow and it took some hair off of the top of his back! NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!! Oh well, so thankful I didn't wound or draw blood, not even a spec! I'm fessing up! No unseen twig that deflected my arrow, NO using the wrong pin, NO ducking the arrow, NO jumping the string, NO mis-judging distance! Just plain 'ole Buck Fever I guess, after 40 years of hunting!!! It took me 44 hunts to lay eyes on him, I FINALLY get the opportunity, and I CHOKE!!!!!! May our paths cross again some day..... you lucky SOB!!!

  21. There's guys putting balls in their mouth and were gonna bother to argue about aging deer on the hoof ? My night was great but painful. Had a doe come out with a mature in tow....but he just walked off. Then another doe came out and a giant ran her right back into the thick stuff. Got her locked down. Hoping he lets her eat in the am, then I'll let the ghost eat. Sent from my XT1650 using Tapatalk

  22. 11/11/18 Kunox I went on a track in a 20,000 acre tract of state land today. The hunter shot the buck from the ground at 60 yards with a 7mm - 08. The buck had hunched up at the shot, but the hunter got two more rounds off as the buck ran off. When hearing it hunched up, my first thought was gutshot, but I was hopeful another round had hit as well. He had tracked good blood for 80 yards, then sporadic for another 100 or so. He had ribbon with him (nice job) and had started marking when it got sporadic. He had not done any grid searching, which was good news. I told the hunter I’d come out, but if we jumped the deer we’d back out and give it more time. I arrived 2 hours after the shooting started. Kunox got on it and took us to last blood and we continued on. A few hundred yards further he began showing signs of uncertainty, so we did a restart. Finally, after a third restart he was sure and off we went. The hunter spotted some blood, which is always nice for confirmation. About 300 yards further I saw fresh, light, sporadic blood and Kunox was really pulling and I told the hunter it appeared we we tracking a live deer. I could see a swamp up ahead of us and told him we’ll see what trail the buck took into the swamp, mark it, and back out. When we got to the swamp, there was blood everywhere and I made the decision to push on. It was rough going through the swamp, so I carried Kunox since it was easy for us to see the blood trail. Once we got out of the swamp and back into hardwoods I let him lead the way, which he did in a hurry, barking as he went. We ended up going through another swamp, up and down a ridge, through pines, and back into hardwoods. Kunox was telling me we were close, and I passed that on to the hunter. A few minutes later I spotted the buck bedded down 50 yards in front of us and told the hunter to take a shot. He said it looks dead, but I told him to shoot again to make sure. At his shot, the buck jumped up and sprinted off, but the hunter racked another one in and made a great shot and dropped him as he ran. They’re was a lot of hollering and high fives happening after that! We’ve been on some 2 mile tracks lately, and today was no exception. Unfortunately, the pause button on my tracking app must have got hit when the phone was in my pocket so I don’t have an exact distance, but it was definitely 2 miles minimum.

  26. Well..at 4:20 pm I passed up my first 3 year old Buck . It was pretty hard to be honest, given the lack luster season thus far. But...I was committed to a 4yr old or better and that's what I need from this season. So, we just had 10 inches of snow and this always negatively impacts deer movement. They tend to stick to 2 or 3 heavy Hemlock stands and barely venture out. They are very difficult to creep up on with bow, the largest such stand is in the neighbors also. I scouted early afternoon and discovered that some night time action indicated deer coming down from the neighbors and just scooting over the property line before doubling back into the Hemlocks. I figured, if there was to be any chance at all, I would have to set-up on this edge and hope something came out before last light. The only stand I felt like moving was about 600 yards away, downhill. I had looked at moving it yesterday, knowing the developing situation, but all the ratchets were frozen solid. Today's Sun warmed them a little and I was able to get 'em loose. I carried this stand and my bow on my shoulders, uphill in deep snow. There was several expletives dropped along the way as I cursed the weather for making me go through this. I got to a stand of maple near the property edge where the tracks came over. Mostly young trees and not much cover. I picked a tree that would give me the best cover from the expected angle of entry. There was a small spruce in front of it which helped a little, but I could just see over it. I lost one of the ratchets on the carry up. Tried searching for it, but to no avail. I still had two straps, and this was enough to get the stand stable. Just before sitting I made a quick jaunt to another stand over some mature Oaks. I wanted to check for feeding activity. There was nothing going on by this stand. Not even squirrel tracks. Time was running out, it was already almost 4. I returned to the previous stand, just erected, and settled in for the last 45 minutes or so. 10 minutes after getting in I see a deer coming down through the neighbors trees. At first it seemed like a nice Doe...then I see horn but it looks small. I thought it was the local Spiker that haunts this edge. But, as the beast clears the trees and passes into the property, I realize it is a 3 year old, 8 points, nice tine length but not much mass. Outside the ears to. A pretty decent deer. At this point he is looking to come by my favored side at about 20 yards. I'm thinking I might just shoot this deer. He stops at the edge of the tree-line. Looks around into our more open area. I get the sense he may turn around and head back to cover, but no, he makes a 45 degree bee-line right for my stand. As he is coming up behind the spruce tree I think about drawing back but decide I want one more good look before finalizing my decision. He is now about 12 yards. He comes into 5 yards, stops to nibble a beech leaf and actually eyeballs me for a second. I am hiding behind my bow now, making like a tree limb. He seems unconcerned and starts to eat more leaves. At this point I have realized, as nice as he is, the antler mass was not there and so I go to reach for my phone to take a pic. I was a bit too fast in my movement and he spooked and skipped back into the treeline. He went close to one of my cameras, but sadly the angle did not pick him up. I don't think I have him on cam at all in fact. I felt good about the pass, but the evening was perfect, sunny, wind in my face and 32 degrees. It would have been a memorable kill. I know there are bigger boys running around and there is still plenty of hunting to be had. This was something of a one-off stand move however due to the poor cover. Hopefully a thaw means I can return to another location this coming week as the deer venture forth once again.

  34. Okay Stormy...I don't intend to argue this all night....Certainly he may have lost his balance and stumbled...Still, I don't think that equates to being " knocked off his feet" by sheer energy alone... I'll let the FOOT POUNDS OF ENERGY boys believe what they want to believe, and I'll stand by what I have witnessed from seeing a few hundred game animals killed over the last 50 years...

  37. No shoulder fired chambering is going to "knock a bear off his feet"...unless you hit the CNS or break down the shoulders... A 20 MM might do it.... Same goes for deer and other medium to big game animals...Those who think that you can "knock down" a game animal with energy are full of shit... HIT or perhaps "come close to" the CNS and shoulders and the animal goes down..Other than that, with a vital hit, such as a double lung or heart shot, the animal will usually go a short distance, but not very far..

  38. Well it happened this morning. Was windy when I got In the stand. Then at about 7 am it went calm. Looked across the creek and up the side hill and saw a good sized deer walking within 10 yards of my buddy’s stand. Oh did I mention he slept in this morning and didn’t come? Looked through binos and it had a decent rack. He is about 200 yards away or better. I hit the grunt call and he turns and starts that bristled stiff legged walk towards me. I had my crossbow. Seemed like forever for him to cover that ground but he came in a straight line towards me. Got to the path I walked I. And started sniffing twigs I had rubbed against walking in. But he kept coming. 25 yards and he turned broadside to walk up a path. Shot. He bolted for about 40 yards through the thick crap and I saw him stand for a few seconds and then walk off. Gave him and hour and he was down about 15’ from the last I saw him.

  46. 11/9/18 #1 I had a call from a hunter with quite a tale to tell. He was still hunting at 9:30 this morning and neck shot a big 8 pointer with his 30.06 at 30 yards. The buck dropped in it’s tracks at the shot. In just a few minutes the grandfather and cousin were on scene, and they all stood there for 10 minutes waiting for the buck to die. The grandfather had told the hunter not to shoot it again so as not to ruin meat. Finally the hunter decided to finish him with his knife, but when he made a move toward the buck, they were shocked to see it get up and run off. They waited an hour, then tracked it for a mile until it crossed a road and went into some pines where they lost the bloodtrail. They hunter and his cousin read my posts and heeded my advice about not grid searching, and called me at this point. I normally start tracks at the hit site, but due to the distance the deer had already traveled, the fact it was still bleeding, and heavy rain moving in, I started where it crossed the road. Kunox immediately got on it and quickly took us through the pines and into some hardwoods. We were seeing sporadic blood along the way. We were a mile and a half into the track when Kunox got vocal and I told the hunter the deer was close. A minute later and we could both smell the rutting buck, and the hunter saw him get up out of a bed 50 yards in front of us. I never allow a hunter to have a round in the chamber as we track, for obvious safety reasons. When the buck jumped up, I reeled Kunox in and called the hunter up and told him to chamber a round. It was too thick for a shot and the buck took off. 200 yards later and we found ourselves at a property line where we were unable to get permission to enter. This track was 1.72 miles and Kunox was all over it. I discussed with the hunter the wisdom of a shot to the vitals as opposed to a neck shot. I think that will be his aiming point next time. The picture shows the buck as they stood there. The second picture shows the blood we started on at the road. #2 Kunox and I got called at 5:00 this evening to track a buck shot at 50 yards with a 30.06. The buck was shot in the shoulder and flipped over backwards when it was hit. It ran off as the hunter’s second shot missed its mark. The hunter, his father, and his brother took up the track 30 minutes later. They tracked 300 yards before losing blood, unsuccessfully grid searched, then called me. Kunox took us to last blood, then took about 10 minutes to get us past the point of loss. He finally chose a trail and off we went, occasionally seeing blood. We were a couple hundred yards beyond last blood when I saw the buck bedded 40 yards ahead. I pulled Kunox back and got my revolver out of the holster as I called the hunter up to take the leash and hold Kunox there. By the time that happened the deer had taken off. Kunox was frantic and quickly took us down the trail after it. I kept his lead short in case we had a close encounter with the buck, but we never caught up with it again during this 2.02 mile track. It was pouring rain the whole track and I called it out of concern for Kunox, who was exhausted and shivering.
