  2. Good news!! Recovered the buck. He literally only went 10-15 feet from where I jumped him and less than 200 yards from where I first shot him. I think the crashing I heard that I thought was him running thru brush was actually him crashing to the ground dead. I’ve never had to back out on a deer before so I was pretty tore up waiting the 6 hours but I’m glad he died quickly and wasn’t suffering for that time. I definitely got the liver and I think one lung but haven’t gutted him yet... figured it’d be best to do at my house given all the coyotes I’ve got on that property so I’m off to do that once I post this. It’s not the buck I thought it was but my buddy and I have seen this buck a few times before. Tank of a body and a pretty good set of antlers. We were undecided whether he was 3 or 4 so my buddy actually passed him at 20 yards during bow but he wasn’t getting away tonight when he came in grunting and chasing a doe. Will post some more photos tomorrow once it’s light. Thanks everyone for the input earlier!

  4. Dad showed up about an hour after shot and we started tracking. Found him less than 50 yards from shot in the thicket. Small 3 point. So I’m hunting with my dads lever action 3030. Deer comes out from where I expect him too. Line up shot, give him a “meh”, pull hammer back to take off safety, pull trigger and “click”. Gun never chambered a round when I racked the lever after loading. Deer still standing still looking. I slowly work the level, line another shot and bang. Single lung and liver shot. Liver was disintegrated. Quick recovery. Capes and dressed hanging for tomorrow.

  5. Ended up hopping in my new set in the grapes a little before 4.....upon getting to the stand I noticed two doe bedded about 75 yards straight away. After I got up into the stand and turned around ...they were now on their feet and bounding away. A minute or two later I see another doe make make its way thru the grapes and leave the property....within a minute or two it turns tail and comes screaming back onto my property and is walking parallel to my stand thru the grapes. I take a quick look down the lane and jude it to be 70 yards. She enters the lane.....I give a "meahh" to stop and take a shot with the crosshairs on her shoulder. She immediately reacts and runs straight away 10-15 yards and then starts zig zagging they the grapes eventually nose diving 65 yards from where she was shot. I am pretty happy....1st deer with the new Savage 220 and venison in the freezer. So as I am packing my gear up and calling the wife I notice her stand and make a small circle and bed down again. Through the binos I assume she is dead so I walk over slowly looking for the deer 20 minutes later and eventually bump her..... immediately back out and head home for dinner and and make a few phone calls. I ended up talking with my dad and we were going to head back at first light then my one hunting buddy convinced me to go back tonight since we may get a pretty nasty ice storm in the morning. Well after getting back there around 9pm and a .25 mile track which took us thru some thick stuff and which also showed us she bedded multiple times we ended up finding her not far from her last bed that had heavy blood. Glad we got on her tonight because she already had he back end nibbled on and tail completely gone. In addition it was pretty cool since I just hung this stand on Wednesday...and not that I wanted to track at 9pm.....but my buddy that I have been hunting with for years was able to help with a textbook track and retrieval. 6. I recalled today that I shot my first buck deer on the day after Thanksgiving in 1966... That was 52 years ago.....He had a spike on one side and a fork on the other...I was so excited that I did not realize he had a fork, and kept dragging him by the spike for about 200 yards uphill...The spike kept slipping from my hand and I had blisters before I reached the top...It was not until I went to tie my tag on his antler that I realized he was a 3 point rather than a spike..

  8. Another fun hunt with my brother. A nice close shot she came in at 35 yards and we weren't even in the blind for 10 minutes!!! My shot was perfect and she ran 75-100 yards where we found her dead right where he said she would be! Another great hunting memory for the books!!!

  12. Bada-bing. Was laying 30 yards from where I last saw it and from where I thought she got wobbly on her run. We were standing within 30 yards of her whe we backed out. No blood until the last 10 yards. Double lunged her after all. Zero varmint or predator damage and she wasn't frozen too badly. I fretted all night and was up before 4:00 waiting for good daylight. I think I worried more about this not going right because my grandson was with me and who wants to screw up in front of their grandson? Our third Black Friday doe in a row together and inner loins on the grill for him tonight. He's a Michigan fan so we're going to start to watch the game together and let him make the call on if we go out for a rain hunt this afternoon or not.

  13. Ok so this is different I'm almost 51 yrs old and this is the first time I've ever hunted from a tower blind. I could get used to this. I let a friend of my nephew's hunt my lease with us a few times earlier this year and once last year and he said if you ever want to hunt behind my house your welcome but I only got 15 acres but I do have a tower blind. Fast forward to tonight my nephew and I wanted to hunt but we were expecting steady rains a phone call to the Hunter and he said help yourself to the blind. I need one of these on my lease! 14. The boy did good, missed under on his first shot at @30 and then nailed it on the second and put it right down with a shot to the heart and lungs from his 7-08 with my hand loads. He was with my bother who has a streak of being with guys on their first deer. My brother said he was breathing hard like it was his first lol. Awesome morning.

  15. I used a yard stick cause that’s all I had and got a measurement of 76 inches. That means by VOLUME he should yield 193 pounds. I am positive we saw his relatives in the woods last time out. They all had the same color hair and each had two ears.

  17. Guys driving state land next to us pushed a herd of doe in but ran by at 200yds. No chance for a shot in these thick woods. I even ran out of blind to try to find a lane. Now huffing and puffing but no chance on a shot. Lol

  18. Negative. Saw 12 in all for afternoon sit. The spike , button , bunch of fawns , one decent deer walked right below my stand , one big body at 250 I couldn’t glass through thick brush and small tree tops. And then a doe hit the big plot at 175. We couldn’t be positive of how big and I was henming and hawing for ten minutes until a fawn hit the plot nearby and size comparison I said take the doe , she’s a shooter. Well she got to pretty shaky and couldn’t steady enough and be comfortable to squeeze the trigger. Doe eventually got back into golden rod. Was hoping she’d come back out but didn’t. She got very upset and shed a few tears disappointed in herself. I’m nor was not upset in the least. No dead deer but no wounded deer either. Told her regardless of 50th deer shot or about to and no nerves it’s time to quit hunting. We still had a great time , was warm without the heater ever turned on. Heard lots of shooting this afternoon. Our time will come. She’s got just a few more opportunities to go with me.

  20. Mom brought some pics up to camp and when I ran across this one it brought tears to my eyes. I had shot a nice 8 point with the bow the evening prior to this hunt and shortly after I killed a Jake. I allowed the birds to fly up and snuck out at dark so I could get dad to be there while I tracked my buck even though I watched him drop. We found the deer gutted him and before we headed down the hill I told dad I wanted to flush the birds so I could bring him back in the morning. Got a good scatter and we were back before the tree talk started in the morning. I started them up with a fly down into an assembly call. Soon there were birds talking every where and a hand full were closing the distance. I saw this Jake sneaking along the hill kee kee calling as he came in. When he got to 20 yards I told dad to shoot him first chance BOOOOM he got. Lol. This was his first ever turkey and sadly his only 1. The following fall I had scattered birds came and got dad. Went back set up and I had birds talking all around us. I heard something sneaking in behind us and when I turned around there was a guy with a shotgun shouldered pointed right at me....to say there was a profanity laced statement made would be an understatement. The guy had the balls to say you sound just like a real turkey with that call. Dad said he was done hunting and when we got back he said please don't ask me to go again as after this incident I will never turkey hunt again and he never did. But he never forgot his only bird and often told people about the hunt. Sent from my LGL58VL using Tapatalk

  33. Hey all Been MIA for a bit but had a great morning today. Opening weekend saw Zippo. Did drives at my buddies today. Saw 17 deer and 11 of them were all small bucks. Incredible action and a great morning to be out. Few more years and those bucks won't be safe. Rain is here now and I am back inside unfortunately. Hitting it hard in the morning though. Good luck everyone Sent from my XT1635-01 using Tapatalk

  38. 1964 in Susquehanna county Pa. I shot a 10pt folks kept driving by the house where we had it hanging for days to see it. My dad and uncle were there that day. Remember that day as if it was today. Since then it's been down hill on any buck with that many pts. Memories.

  39. Mine was a 7 point on November 7 1998. I remember it well I had my dad's Winchester semiauto in 308 ( not sure of the model it was stolen shortly after) with a cheap tasco scope. The weather had been rainy and all of a sudden at the base of my tree stand I heard them. It was a doe on a pretty good pace following 10 feet behind was the buck. I was so excited they circled around in front of my stand I pull up my gun to find my scope was half fogged up do to the wet weather and a I could only see half the view. I found quickly what I thought was the vitals and touched it off. My dad must have been looking down after me as I made a beautiful shot and he only went about 100 yrds. I was so excited and ended up getting it mounted. Sent from my XT1650 using Tapatalk

  42. It has been tough hunting since opening day of gun. Have not seen a deer!! Nothing! Until today. Had seen multiple decent bucks during bow. Passed a bunch of young ones, and even was second guessing myself about not taking a couple shots, I thought were iffy at the time. (glad I did) We had to keep up with the changing bedding areas, and feeding patterns, as the traditional ones along the swamps, were flooded out with all the rain this fall. So most all our spots were changed again and again. Opening morning came with a bunch of snow. We sat what we thought were our "best" options. Saw no deer. Day two, moved to a spot where they "had" to be! Saw no deer, and no fresh tracks at all. Day three, we figured if they weren't in the first two areas, well they MUST be in this one. Right? Wrong again! No deer or any fresh sign again at all! Was actually thinking have they left the property? Got a call last night from work, a machine was down, could I come in the morning, even though I'm on vacation. Sure, NP. Was out of there by noon. Ran home throw on my stuff, and started thinking where the heck could the deer be on our property! Heading up the hill, I decided to try the lowest end, with pines and some REALLY thick brush. After walking down the tractor access lane, I saw a few fresh tracks! Cool! Got to within 100 yards of a small ladder stand I was going to, and in the thick stuff to my left about 60 yards ahead, a bedded doe stands up! And I see another deer stand up behind her, and immediately see it's a good buck! But I have no shot, the doe is blocking him! The doe is giving me the stare down, but he is looking at her, not me. I knew whatever was going to happen, it would happen fast, as she was getting ready to bolt. She took a step left, right before she bolted, and there was the buck in my scope, thrugh a small window, quartering hard to me. He sees me now, and is looking my way too. I was on him, it's now or never, and trusted myself, and my 270 as I squeezed off the 60 yard shot. His front end dropped, he whirled to his right, and I lost sight of him in the brush. The doe bounded away, and as I watched her go, a bigger buck I never saw is on the other side of the lane!!! He bounds away too! Now I'm not sure of my shot. Did I hit him? Was that second buck him? If it was, how did he get there without me seeing him? So I decided to back out and give things, and myself a short time to calm down. As I turn around, a deer bolts across the lane! I'm on him. It's a spike! Don't shoot!......After threes days with not on deer seen, my hearts beating pretty good at this point. I call my partner Gary, he says stay there, I'll be right down. Sounds good to me. Now the doubt really sets in. When he gets to me I tell him I think I missed. I rushed the shot, as he was getting ready to bolt. We split the thicket, me on the side he ran to, Gary on the side of the shot. Shortly I hear a familiar whistle. And I'm crashing through the brush, to where the buck lays dead! He didn't go 20 yards! A quiet minute or two to give thanks, a handskake and pat on the back from Gary and my buck hunt is over this year. I'm so proud of this one! A lot of guessing, and moving set ups this season. Persistence and patience. Along with some luck. Just shy of 180 lbs. Nice three year old for my area of 4-H.

  44. I posted this in the live from the woods thread but wanted to put it in its proper place here. Let me start off by saying in my 21ish years of hunting I’ve never seen a buck this big alive in the woods. My biggest buck to date is a small racked 7 pointer. I was already having a pretty decent opening day. Saw a doe early then a spike around 12 and another small 4 pointer around 12:30-12:45. Things went quiet around 1pm. Around 2:30 I decided to have a pee then get out my lucky skittles and settle in for the last 2 hours of the day. Right around 3 I hear a few shots go off 200 or so yards away followed by very heavy crashing. I figured what ever the deer was is going down in some thick nasty stuff and I’d be helping drag out a deer after sunset. Just in case though I grabbed the gun stood up and waited. That’s when the surprise kicked in. This buck with a big rack comes smashing through the thicket with a broken rear leg. At this point a completely forget about the rack and settle the gun on the vitals and follow him waiting for him to hit my shooting lane. Now he’s not moving very fast because of the broken leg. He gets through my first shooting lane as I still follow him cross hairs on the vitals. He gets into my second lane and I squeeze the trigger. He folds up in 20 yards head facing away from me. That’s when I remembered Holy Crap! This dude had a rack on him and a big one! When I finally got down to check him out I was in complete shock! In fact I think I still am!
