  1. How sweet it is to knock down a doe with my son right next to me after the other little guy’s grandfather nudged her our way. First deer I never had to drag an inch!!! What a blessing- corned venison for everyone!!!!! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  4. I've tried for 38yrs to tag a buck, any buck on my birthday. Yes, I passed some barley legal 3" spikes over the yrs. I've taken several nice bucks before my bday or the day after or even later in the season. Today I broke the curse. I seen this buck crossing the old farm lane about 80 yrds out. It was too thick to get a shot. It took 30min to cut the distance to 25yrds before I had a softball sized window to the back of his neck. I couldn't be more happier. The type of hunt made the difference, despite he's not the biggest buck in the woods. My first birthday buck. He would have gotten a pass if it wasn't my bday, but he's a trophy to me.

  8. So I was going through the attachments that I have uploaded over the years on this forum and it made me realize how far I have come in the 5 or so years that I have been a part of this community. I decided I wanted to share all I have accomplished since I have been a member of this community and have learned more and more from the great people on here. My first year deer hunting was 1989. It took me until 2012 to kill my first buck. A small fork horn and I was proud as hell to have harvested him. In 2013 the pic in the top left is the first pic I uploaded to this forum. I posted that 12/2 and the name of that post was "Not the biggest in the woods but I am happy to have him". Reading through that post showed me how far I have come in the last 5 or so seasons. In that topic I was saying how I just don't see bucks that other people see and while I knew there were bigger I never saw them. You guys were speculating as to why that could be, especially with other guys on my lease killing nice deer every year. 2015 was my coming out party. I killed my first deer with a bow, the big girl in the second pic and my first buck with the bow, the 5 pt with the bow. I remember seeing that 5 pt walking slowly toward me and I was shaking like a leaf and believe it or not I was in awe of his antlers. In that post we had a heck of a track job on him, I shot a little too low but I tracked him down with the help of my more experienced hunting buddies and the feeling of holding those antlers was awesome. I also shot my first coyote with the bow that season. Made a heck of a shot on him at about 40 yds. Not a shot I would have taken on a deer but I was super proud of myself for the shot. That opening day of rifle I got my first 8 pointer and today he is on my wall. He came in about 4 o'clock chasing a doe. I didn't know how many points he was looking at him through the scope but I knew he was the widest deer I had ever seen. I had my rifle rested on my shooting rail and was waiting for a shot. I had my crosshairs on his neck as he was behind a tree and almost surprised my self as the rifle reported and I made a perfect shot and dropped him in his tracks. The doe hung around under my treestand even after the shot was taken. When the doe finally cleared out I could finally climb down and go see the deer. When I saw it was a 8 pointer I knew he was going on my wall. I was full of emotion and lots of hugs and pats on the back from the guys as they came in to help me gut and get the deer out. They all knew how long I had been waiting to kill a nice deer. The next year 2016, I killed what I assume will be the deer of my lifetime. The giant 9 pointer. The feeling when that boy dropped was overwhelming and when I was able to walk up to him I was in awe. The guys could hear me woot woot!! in the woods. I believe that is the biggest deer that has been killed on our lease and if I ever drop one bigger than that it will be amazing. Fast forward to this year and I harvested my first deer with the crossbow which is the big doe behind the 4 wheeler and the small 8 that I harvested last Sunday. While I was super thankful for the 8 last Sunday and I would shoot him again if given the chance, it is also the first time I found myself thinking, wow that would have been a great deer next year. Again showing my evolution as a hunter in a short time span. I want to thank everyone on this forum that's insite, posts, time spent, advice, persistence, determination etc have all helped me more in the last 5 years then anything I learned in 20 plus years prior. Its been awesome sharing my hunting experiences with you and learning from all of yours.

  9. First archery season for me this year. Passed on 11 dink bucks , tumor buck , busted drawing on a nice doe. Fawns , decent does too far off. Shooter bucks too far off. Gun season starts and same. Not sure how many hours in a stand but it’s a lot. Started to get burnt out , deflated, calling it quits and was very close to my second deerless season along with last year being my first. Daughter shot her first ( buck ) last year so that made it a great season. Someone made a golf related comment to keep me out here and it stuck. Brought up a club championship years ago where in dreadful rain and wind I shot 81 ( 9 over par ). It’s done , on paper and out of my control. The next weekend I shot 69 Saturday and 67 Sunday for the win 81-69-67. I put that experience into my hunting this year. The past is gone and out of my control. Been carrying my ML as primary gun all year as usual. Yesterday I asked daughter if I could borrow her Remington 870 youth 20. She gladly obliged. Got to stand at about 2 . My fawn friends arrive as normal to dig in the small plot. I notice movement coming from the west on woodsline into golden rod. West wind in my favor. Shooter buck I guessed at 100. Didn’t grab laser range finder out of backpack but looked like most of a sand wedge. He started directly towards me with only a head on shot. Then started diagonally and was getting closer. I turned on bushnell T optics and dang shooting rail is too low. Well Treeguy helped me set this stand in a 5 trunk maple. One trunk with a nice limb gave me the rest I needed. Put the T front shoulder and squeezed. Legs buckled under him. Racked another and kept eyes on him. 5-7 minutes later I see him trying to get up and head is raised. Put T on neck and sent another. Nary a twitch. First one went through boiler room. But I was taking no chances and no too dead. 81 yards. Buddy who’s property I hunt is in Ohio so no deer uber. Old school drag by horns most of way. Then hitting the uphill portion I grabbed the drag and shed some gear. You guys kept my head in the game , thank you for that. PMS and texts were blowing my phone up. Thanks for the congrats! Up in stand now trying to punch a doe tag. Guessing he’s 2.5. I like the dark chocolate rack. Congrats to everyone who’s gotten it done and good luck the remainder of the year.

  10. “No point hunting this weekend....... rest up and hit it the next two weekends.” That was the plan and instead I cooked breakfast for family and am heading out for the 10-2 pm hunting shift. It’s a sickness. Lol. Good luck all. Going to try the Pygmy christened muzzleloader.

  12. To the trapper who's red fox I just shot thinking it was responding to my call, well-done and your catch will be waiting there for you stiff in the morning. Consider yourself lucky that I brought two rifles tonight and decided to use the .22mag on that particular stand. The . 243 isn't so fur friendly on fox! 17. I’m bringing my own juju tomorrow! The stars aligned, the calendars cooperated, the boy is jacked up for a few hunts tomorrow and maybe Sunday am if the weather cooperates (yeah right!)!!! Honestly I may not sleep tonight- alarms set for 3:30 for 1 of my twins to come with me to my buddy’s Columbia county property. While I killed the best deer for me ever this season in bow, I must say this season has not been “my best” I just haven’t hunted as much or as hard as I would like. BUT tomorrow my son is coming along for the first time this year and I am stoked(god I hate that term but it works for how I’m feeling!). Still...all good vibes go to Bionic, with a side of Biz. Let’s have some fun and make some memories tomorrow! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  18. We have 920 in the North and 124 in Western Ny. The bigger is enough to control the deer a bit and the smaller borders 100's of acres of No Hunting so that works out well also. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  20. Got out for a morning sit with the crossbow before work. Very little deer movement, saw a small buck and a really small doe (possibly button buck). This good-sized doe snuck up behind me, and looped around in some heavy stuff. She popped out on the trail to my stand. She was slightly quartered to me at just over 10 yards and I tucked one behind her shoulder. When I checked the bolt, I was a little nervous because there was stomach contents, but I knew I made a good shot and there was tons of blood. I slowly peeked over the edge of the hill where she ran, and I could see a red path leading to her about 30 yards away. She weighed 133 lbs and the Rage did its job. Took out front side lung, and caught bottom of opposite lung and cut her stomach as it exited. Great to have some more meat in the freezer. I have to be careful though... I might go all season without firing a gun

  28. Im with you Crappyice. Even though I got my best buck to date this bow season, gun has not been working out for me as far as any of the big boys showing up. Passed on some smaller bucks including a small 6Pt less than 15 yds from me yesterday, but haven't laid eyes on one of the big boys during gun season. My log shows I'm up to 195 hours of stand time this year, not counting time sitting in the dark waiting for daylight...122 bow season and 73 gun season. But today feels like the day and I'm packed in for an all day sit today. Good luck to you and all the rest out there today. Biz you are due for one...hope your 8Pt shows up in front of you

  29. I was so excited when my dad, and I bought 21 acres in the dack’s, feels like a lot to us.

  30. For years dad and I hunted an amazing 8 acres. He killed a nice buck almost every year. Then it for subdivided and he didn’t want to buy it. He bought 30 acres in 2016. It borders 50 acres of landlocked public land that nobody hunts, so it’s like having 80. Only neighbor has 15-20 acres and they don’t shoot 1.5 bucks either like us so each year it seems to get better and better. It’s a 10min drive for him and 20min for me. 34. Going out for the rest of the afternoon. This will be it for me. Not been a good year for hunting trying to get our new house closed on now for 4 weeks has killed any joy of going out. But dad wants to go so im going to try and clear my head for 3 hrs in my stand so dad atleast has a chance.

  35. I believe that creates an easement by necessity .,through the private land . Which is easier said then done . Was hunting BLM land in Montana where the only access was down a private ranch road, the rancher didn’t quite agree, however my hunting partner lives in “The West “ and is an attorney, so the ranchers bluff was called . But we left just to avoid any further issues .

  37. I either have been or am a member of some other forums mainly motorcycle and or 4 wheeler forums and I have never seen a more tightly nitted group than this that I believe generally in most cases care for one another. In those other forums there is usually alot more criticism and sarcasm than any support or knowledge being handed down. This is by far my first and favorite forum to visit and be part of. I have met a few people in person from this site and they are down right awesome stand up people. I look forward to meeting some more when I make one of these get togethers. 40. We have 600+ acres, between two properties. I'm property poor! It is a blessing and a curse, trying to figure out where to be, and when. We do alot of the zig and zag game. And we certainly are not over run with deer here. Like some locals think we are.

  41. I think his answer will be no, same as mine ever been to Webster ? I’m almost 60 been to LI once for a wedding . To us NYC /li area is in a remote part of the state , almost more a part of other states . I almost have to be reminded that an ocean touches NYS . I could ask everyone I know or run into for the next month and not find one that ever ocean fished in NYS . its nothing we do or think about others here doing , that’s all .

  42. Deer 2 150 pounds dressed weight 18" inside spread 8 points Savage 220, 20 Ga., Remington Accutips This was my first outing with gun, for various reasons, including laziness. Seeing some great bucks taken recently inspired me (esp. TF) plus a Thursday morning sighting of this buck motivated me to at least get my butt in a stand. I was not even ready yet, had just clipped my harness onto the tree, had not loaded the gun or even wiped the snow off the tree stand seat. I turned around and noticed a deer about 150 yards away but could not see any antlers. I had to dig out my binoculars and when I had them could clearly see it was the buck I had seen the day before. I loaded my gun (Savage 220) as quietly as possible. I used a bleat can and got his attention. But he was not coming closer. I dug the grunt tube out of the bottom of my backpack, gave it one blow and that was all it took. He walked to me and I shot him at 65 yards. He took off and went behind some trees and brush. I gave him 20 minutes and found him 50 yards from where I shot him. I've never had such a short time in the treestand! Very thankful and happy for a great season. Hoping to take one with a muzzleloader too, plus I've got a DMP to use too. Sent from my SM-G950U using Tapatalk
