  1. I'm pretty sure this will be the fourth spring for this friendship. How it's lived with coyotes, fox, fisher and countless others looking to make a meal out of it I'll never know. I've posted pics before of this interaction and I hope it doesn't bore you. The last two times down to my buddies my wife has been with me and she enjoys it too. Yesterday two times it flew into the back of my wife and I (actually physically hitting us) when we would pull away on the 'wheeler. I have video from my phone of one such "drive by" but it's to long for here. I swept the snow off this limb and got it to walk up to me..... It has landed on the machine numerous times but I can never get my phone out in time. Today I did..... 15-20 seconds is about all it will hang out for before jumping down..........

  2. I tried this for the first time this week and cooked it last night. Wow, it turned out great! Hands down, one of the best roasts I ever made. Brined a shoulder roast in the fridge for six days and boiled it last night. No plate pics as we dug into it too quickly, was fall-apart tender. Didn’t follow any one particular recipe for the brine, rather I read a few different ones and freestyled it. Very easy prep for such a good dish! Going to try the next one in the smoker for pastrami.

  5. So after many months of planning, today was my son's Eagle Scout ceremony and was honored along with two other young men from his troop. It was an unbelievable day to say the least which started with the USMC Color Guard presenting The Colors and ending with many local dignitaries, legislators, mayors and others who presented many proclamations and certificates of recognition to all the boys. As the Eagle scout oath states: The Eagle rank is not the end but only the beginning. Sent from my SM-G955U using Tapatalk

  7. Ruffed Grouse are an amazing species, ł wrote up my story in the Hunter Harassment thread a while back. Part of my long term land management plan is to improve habitat for these guys because they are so cool.

  9. Of the perhaps 50 or 60 firearms I have bought, I never paid more than $500 for one.....However I bought my last new one in about 1993, I think... I have bought a few used ones since then..Last one I remember was a sporterized 03A3 Springfield that I paid $250 for with a Weaver 2x7 scope.. The most expensive gun I ever bought was a field grade Browning Citori, about 50 years ago...I believe they were retailing for about $750 at the time.. Interest rates were very high at the time and the Bank of Boulder, CO had a deal on Browning shotguns and Weatherby Mk V rifles.... I sent $1500 to the Bank and they sent me a Citori up front as interest on my $1500.. Six years later they sent me my $1500 back...Best deal I ever made...

  11. Worked on giving the ol' stud a kid this morning and smoothing a few things out. Just kinda decided on this on the fly once I got going since I really didn't have a plan on what to do if the buck head turned out alright.

  12. Finally got out in the field with my rifle. My first hunt with it happened to be at Tioga boar ranch. This was my first type of pay to hunt so I was not real sure what to expect. The ranch itself is quite inviting and has apparently had some new buildings put up in recent past. It’s clean, kept well, and the staff are awesome. The hunt was finished quickly. We walked a short way into the woods while a guide worked to move some our direction. A herd of Russians came by but I was after meat, not a trophy. That herd had some meat hogs that stopped near us. They were eating and not moving much when the Mrs. clicked off her safety and dropped one at about 70 yards. Looking later, she made an excellent shot. I was up next but had to wait until the one was clear of the dead one. After a few minutes, I had a clear shot that found its mark. A little closer, maybe 60 yards. Both hogs dropped where they stood. The guides cleaned and loaded them up and let us know this was unusual to be done so quickly. For what it was, this went well. I filled the freezer, deflowered the NULA, and the mrs. Had fun.

  14. I actually enjoy walking with my rifle. And hell, who knows I might even actually shoot something that I'm hunting, betweem points A and B. Most 'REAL' hunters understand this concept.

  20. In my humble opinion, the Ruffed Grouse is one of the coolest critters roaming our woods. One of the tastiest too, though I rarely hunt them anymore. Preferring to just admire them. Not as many around now as in years past. I have had a couple close encounters with them too! But not for as long as the one Lawdwaz has! I remember the past posts for this. So cool! This is the kind of stuff I come here for!!! Thanks for keeping it real Larry.

  22. A more interesting observation is that regardless of what you spend....what are the most carefree /dependable guns for the money? The very inexpensive (but now defunct) Harrington/Richardsons single shots were legendary for their dependability and relative accuracy. I always thought they missed the mark by not marketing an upscale version (which I think Henry is doing with their new single shot). Freakin Winchester model 94s used to be had for well under 200.oo at Kmart....The newest renditions are between 1 and 2 grand!! A more proven dependable gun is hard to find. They aren't still being made (although under different labels) after 130 years for nuthin! Funny how at one time a guy simply had ….a deer rifle, be it a sporterized Mauser or Enfield, Remington, 700, Model 94 or whatever, and thought he was as well armed as ever could be. Now the mass media market has turned it into entry level (Ruger American, Savage whatever, etc)….any of which are as capable as any predecessors, and the more serious lines..Tika, Winchester, Remington, Kimber, etc. Through it all, the gun is nothing more than a decoration if the user doesn't have some substance.

  25. I bet my gun case against yours “ I have no idea what you have but Im guessing I have more than 10x’s the guns you do” that I walked more miles in a few days last year than you walked all season and I don’t even have a sling on a gun until I’m done gutting a deer. I’ve never been one to have to justify a want but to say you need a takedown for all the miles you walk is bull shit! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  29. Scaphism by Nightmare Brewing might be the most dangerous beer I've ever had! Silky smooth imperial stout brewed with milk, sugar, honey, Tahitian vanilla and Cacao. By comparison, DFH World Wide Stout goes down hot at 18% ABV. This Scaphism is pure stealth bomber mode at 17%. Can art matches the brewer's personality (he has a 1 foot spiked multi-color mohawk) to a "T". TF, aboa...do you dare try it?!

  33. Since when do any of those I mentioned do any of that? Go buy a Remington rust-o-special then. Fact is there are a ton of great rifles new and used for $2K but you have to use your brain first to figure out what are the most important features and what are priority. Most of them you have never heard of because there are multiple makers that aren't in Outdoor Life or some dumb link in an on line ad.

  34. When you get into that price range I would say most manufacturers will be putting out some pretty good stuff and will probably be reliable. More than anything else it will boil down to preferences of an action, it's styling and aesthetics, a Winchester Model 70 "Super Grade" in a caliber I like would satisfy me and substantially less than 2000.00 Shotguns are a different matter especially when it comes to doubles which I have a strong liking for but am short in the cash department. Been thinking seriously about a new O/U for a long time, I think if I had two grand laying around for a new double it would have to be the American made Connecticut Revelation 20ga over and under for 1995.00 Al

  43. My father and his buddy (the fellow who's land I hunt) did that same deal Dan.......back in 1976 or 77?? They both got the Grade 6 Citori in 20ga and both still own them. My father hunted his quite a bit for pheasant, quail (Mississippi) partridge, dove (Pennsylvania) and even a little duck. Although it is an engraved gun with gold inlay I'm so happy he used it hard and didn't make it a safe queen. It has screw in chokes; does your Dan? I always thought that was as cool of a thing as possible for a bank to do. CD's paid off with GUNS instead of cash!!
