  1. Got one this morning. 19lbs. 6.5" beard. 3/4" spurs. 45 yards. Only a few series of yelps once he flew down, and he came in looking for me. Thankful!

  4. I'm scheduled for another knee replacement surgery in a few weeks. To be able to hobble around the woods this year and shoot 2 nice gobblers was one of the most gratifying spring turkey seasons I've had. The tale of the tape from this morning : 19 pounds , 91/2" beard and 1" spurs.

  5. Cool hunt, but no bird. Set up on the inside corner of a field, two hen dekes out. Had a bird gobbling on the roost behind me about 5:10. About 5:20 he’s down and coming closer behind me gobbling over and over. Then he’s off to my left and inside the woods about 50 yds. I can see movement, but no clean look at the bird. He continues to move away inside the woods toward the cut corn field 300 yds away. Heard him gobbling up there til almost 6:00. Then 50 yds behind me I hear a couple of clucks and a boomer gobble that startled me. They moved in the same direction as the first bird, but stepped out in the field about 120 yds away. 4 hens, and then the tom. Gave a couple of clucks and the hens all looked over. The tom gobbles twice and I can see his swinging beard. Big bird. They all moved away along my field edge to the corn field. Couldn’t get either tom interested. Saw them on the horizon 500 yds away in the corn stubble on my way out at 7:30. I must have heard 50-60 gobbles between those two, but not a gobble after 6:10. Had things to do today, so it was a short sit, but I’ll be inside the woods 50 yds off that field tomorrow morning. Oh yeah, heard what sounded like a freaking roar from 100 or so yds in the woods when I was setting my dekes. Never heard that before, and I imagine it was a bobcat. Made the hair on my neck stand up! Short sit, but a cool sit this morning.

  8. 18 years ago I planted several apple tree on my place. Not knowing much about drainage requirements, most of them did not survive. I sold some property that had several Cortland trees that survived. The only survivor left on my current property was a single Mackintosh tree. After applying a plastic mesh to the trunk for rodent protection in winter and some 4' woven wire fence around the base for deer protection, it was neglected for all of that time. Since it was isolated from other species of apples/crabapples , it seldom bore more that a few apples. Back in early March I took some cuttings for the Cortland trees now on my neighbor's property as well as some from a tree located on the outskirts of Potsdam, NY, about 18 miles distant. Over the years we noticed deer under that tree on winter evenings and the fact that the tree held apples into January. My guess is that it is some species of the Rome variety. Earlier this week I pruned all of the brush and lower branches that were entwined in the woven wire fence circling the base as well as a lit of the intertwined branches in the crown of the tree. It took quite a bit of tugging and cutting with fence pliers, nippers and a pruning saw to get to the tree. Now the tree looks much better. I grafted the Rome and Cortland cutting higher up in the crown to keep deer from getting at those varieties so that they should hold fruity throughout deer season and beyond. The pink ribbons identify the grafts and variety so that I can monitor success and avoid pruning away the new varieties in the future. I will post picture of progress in the future.

  14. Today I get in early and setup where he's been heading after fly down, he lands on the power lines and goes into the woods on the other side. Strutting and gobbling for an hour. At 7 he walks away gobbling. I tried to get around and ahead of him but never heard him again. I did have three wood ducks jumping from tree to tree over me that was pretty cool Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

  19. if he was getting closer he cut the distance NOW you as a hen are supposed to go to him. We are reversing nature by trying to call him ALL the way in. Go silent/he'll continue to come in/scratch leaves in behind you to sound as hen feeding with a soft purr around the side of your leg mixed in

  30. Don't want to derail but I also have fawns reports from my buddy who drives at night, traced back and it would be the first pre-rut in October early. On LI the weather is usually mild enough for them to survive, often these early starters are the ones who get the biggest when they do make it.

  31. If anyone with experience on this subject would comment or critique my methods, it would be appreciated. I'm strictly winging it here. What little knowledge of methods & technique I have is strictly from what I have been able to get form Google on the pruning and the instructions that came with the tool.. What got me motivated this spring was the grafting tools being advertised on Amazon, eBay, and social media. I particularly like the "Ohm" type cut as it tends to stay together as the tape is applied. I applied plenty io the tape until the twig graft joint seemed to have as much stiffness as the branch it was grafted to. I will go out after breakfast to inspect the results after all the wind we had yesterday.
