  1. By far my least aggressive season ever. Been out 4x only. Off yesterday and today and didn’t go. Last year hunted probably 25 days of 31. BUT pretty sure “treebird” is one I’ve played with 2x so far. Same roosting area as last year. Played a great game last year with me showing him my whole hand until this happened. Few days later I killed his buddy (typical 2 year old ) and ole Tom was about 15 yards behind him. I smashed the sure thing as didht want to botch waiting for him to close the gap any farther. His head is ginormous and tallest fan I’ve seen. Well tomorrow daughter has ballet at noon and I work at 2. We’re going into his bedroom real early and hopefully she sends a load of tss his way doing something I haven’t been able to do. There’s a few other birds I could be playing with but this grudge of last year I will be handing over in the morning for Samanatha to get a chance. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  7. its to each its own..... but it just cant understand how people think a crossbow isnt easier to hunt with than a bow. It almost seems like have they ever used one? It has the same capabilities as a 50 yard gun. I hunt from treestands mostly, but on the ground or from the stand you just look thru a scope and shoot. Bow has to be drawn and more movement can be seen, have to hold it and there are more targeting issues with a bow by far. Correct form, if shooting down bend the right way, right anchor point, no scope, etc. even with practice those variables are still there. I actually love the way the seasons are setup right now cause i like to hunt with everything bow, xbow, gun. To say the crossbow is heavy - mine weighs the same as my -06. both 7+lbs. I can shoot my xbow quarter groups at 50. My bow I limit to 45 and shoot 6" groups then and it would have to a perfect shot to even consider it. Ive killed with the crossbow from the ground and from a stand and have held it on a deer - last year - for a few minutes to get the right shot. I can have most anyone shooting bulls with my xbow in 3 shots or less - the compound takes a whole lot of practice. I would certainly like to see xbow open with a dr note though for those that cannot draw a bow. - which in itself proves it is easier to use. Hell there is even an academy in Western NY for bow practice, havent seen it open to crossbow yet. Lol

  9. Going to be another long one, so apologies again Got to my spot at 4:55 today after only getting 2 hours of sleep, so i spent a little time in my car eating my breakfast. Got to the spot i killed the bird last week at 5:15 and didnt hear a single confirmed gobble on the roost. Thought I might have heard a few, but the creek was up again so I couldnt tell for sure. Sent out a couple calls with no response so I decided to walk back to my car to drop of my jacket and go to my ground blind. On my way to the blind I stopped in an area they usually roost to check for any sign. Before i started looking, I said what the hell and sent out a few yelps. Immediately got a response right where my blind is. I snuck as close as I could and he was non stop gobbling with out me even calling. I counted at least 7 in maybe 10-15 seconds time. Figured this bird was hot and I was going to get a crack at him. He must have only been 60-70 yards, but I was down in another creek bottom so I couldnt see him. I wear hearing protection when I hunt and it amplifies it. Usually not a problem, but it made it seem like he was right on top of me when I thought he wasnt so i moved them a bit so I can hear how far he really is. I guess he was that close because as soon as I did that, the gobbles stopped. I gave it an hour and tried looping around to where I thought it ran and nothing. I was half dissapointed and half excited for the expereince. I was all set to go to my ground blind until 12, but i decided around 8 to give it another shot where I shot that bird last week. Before I got to the spot, i decided to throw out a call just in case. What do you know I got a reponse from a bird about 150-200 yards away. I wish I could have seen the look on my face when I heard that gobble. I thought that this couldnt be happening to me since im not a good turkey hunter. I cut in as close as I could, but it got so thick I just sat down and started calling. It didnt sound like he was getting any closer so I decided to swing around to get in a better position. Half way to where I wanted to be I hear him gobble much closer. Actually right where I shot the bird last week, which I thought I was funny. I scrambled to find a good tree next to the small 1 acre clearing i was standing in. I sat down, called a couple times and was cut off. I called again just to make sure I wasnt going crazy and I heard nothing so i knew he was coming in. I put the call down, and not 10 seconds I see him in the middle of the field strutting. I dont like shooting strutting birds, so I waited for him to stop. I couldnt make any noises with my mouth becuase I had so much adrenaline pumping. Well he wouldnt stop strutting, spitting and drumming till he got to 15 yards. At that point he was to my left and I had to wait til he got behind a big oak to move. He must have knew something was up, because he just stuck his head out behind the tree, but it was enough for me to get it done. No pellets in his breasts for sure. I have to say, I really am addicted to turkey hunting. Deer hunting will always be number 1 for me, but this is a very close second. so far ive called in 3 birds that I know of and took 2...my best season ever. Now Ill be calling for some friends and maybe if im lucky ill convince my father to actually go out hunting again. Really didnt think id be able to get a second bird, but guess i had a little bit of luck on my side. Weighed 19 pounds 1 1/4 spurs and a 10" beard. I want to say its 3-4 years old. Trophy bird in my opinion. Also this is what my pants looked like with that bird on my back. I need to buy or make some kind of turkey tote lol.

  22. also use this setup. I have an empty paint can to hang from a bow holder about 6' off the ground. In the paint can I have a small bush beans can with a sterno. taped to the top i have a large empty bush bean can filled with goodness. I can then just light the sterno and let it puff (really cool how it puffs). You actually don't want to put too much in as it will overflow the honey and create a mess. I'll post pics this spring as I need to make a new one. i still think it's risky, but not illegal. Open to interpretation. the argument being that something boiling on fire and not left in the woods while not boiling isn't "edible" and therefore not food bait. I also think many dec officers run into actual baiting and understand how hard bear hunting without any form of bait can be, so maybe they're lenient.

  23. Pretty good you can adjust the volume I found it better to keep the volume low because there so sensitive I could here my self breathing was a little strange at first picks up everything once you get the volume lever adjusted just right you forget you have them on. I Definitely recommend them .

  29. I’m not a fan of large campers at all because all your time should be outside. I almost feel this one is to big but it will be nice to have a nice big dry open area to get changed in and such. Even has a bathroom which I honestly don’t want to even use. The wife and kids are all about the bathroom but of course they won’t be the ones emptying the tank! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  34. I believe there is a little more than merely semantics. Most Xbow mfgers refer to them as arrows. Possibly attempting to keep their products more in line with vertical bow archery. Marketing smoke n mirrors. I'll admit to being guilty of buying wrong items when in a hurry or not paying attention! Shouldn't be an issue with Xbow projectiles. Don't recall ever seeing unfinished Xbow bolts/arrows. You're always prompted or it's clearly displayed on pkging their length, either 20" or 22". Not to mention you have to specify a nock style, either flat or 1/2 moon. Agreed.. would make things so much less confusing if Xbows used apples and vertical bows used oranges.

  36. I get what you are saying. But we can't control the other interest groups and their lack of effort. We know all too well the Left and advocates can be laser focused on the media splash and not spend much time on results. This IS something the hunters could so and get results and beat our chest a bit about it. This IS NOT something the state is proposing. I am just looking at the number of licenses sold and honestly if it were even 50 cents per hunter we could fund the program at current levels with ease and never risk losing it. If they could pay a better market cost for the butchering we could expand the program and have processors much more conveniently located for us all. This program does a couple things. It not only provides the food to those in need but allows an outlet for meeting management goals in areas with high deer densities. Personally I have laid off harvesting does when my freezer hit capacity and I had given to family and friends that wanted some. I am in one of those areas that we never meet the harvest goals. That is an aspect we as hunters and managers of a resource should be concerned about and use as a feather in our cap...IMO

  37. My big concern is the state ADDING the $1 to the license cost. They are not asking for a $1 donation, they will be taking it no matter what. I still think hunter's are already donating the deer and they started the program in spite of huge opposition from the state and special interests groups that didn't like it. Hunters get almost no recognition at all for the program. I don't expect we will get any if we pay an extra dollar in the future. The problem of the hungry in NY is one that should be handled by many interest groups involved with the hungry and the homeless. Maybe it's time to ask them to pay these costs. It's not the $1 that's at issue. It's the state's attitude towards hunters regarding this program.

  42. you'd think for simple marketing and customer satisfaction they'd keep the delineation. I'd hate to make a hasty purchase of arrows for my compound only to get a package of crossbow bolts in the mail. Until they're identical in nature, they should be labeled and marketed separably.

  49. I got a 350 legend, as a tote gun wouldn’t be my first choice. I’m a 35cal nut and had to have one and it’s a neat round balistically a twin to the old 357maximum and right on the heels of a 35rem. It will be a hell of a deer cartridge and super cheap to shoot if you reload. It’s not near as perfect as it could have been because Winchester wanted to make everything a little different so you have to buy from them. It has a .355 bore instead of 357 and they didn’t use 223 brass as the parent cartridge. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
