  2. Out for the first time with my stepson Cole, in about 5 or 6 years when he tagged along once.. In all reality, it was a quiet and quite slow morning. Nothing was talking. It was breezy, so we got down on a hillside out of the wind before daybreak to try and listen. Coyote pups lit up the woods around 6am, i believe answering the sound of hen yelps and cuts coming from the crystal pot call.. They loved it lol.. They were going nuts down where I was anticipating some quiet birds to be roosted.. It was fun to listen to.. A hen came out of that roost site but nothing else, we gave it time and talked back and forth(which Cole loved hearing). We got up after she slipped out of view, went and checked a plowed field about 1/4mi away where I had high hopes they would be. Got there, called nothing, checked, nothing, Waited a bit and listened, nothing.. Waited longer for the sun to rise up and shine on the field, Nothing. I couldn't believe it. 3rd or 4th time out and its been dead all around this area.. Im beginning to think redhead numbers are low .. Around 730am We decide to go back and get in the car and go try the property I hunted Sunday, On our way there, I break out of our Seasonal rd to the maintained dirt rd and instantly notice the field off in the distance is plowed and we can hunt it.. I knew instantly it would attract some Turks.. And its on the opposite side of a well known roost site on a neighboring property. So we drove around it and Walah.. Almost all the way on the furthest side from any woods, are 3 red heads and 4 hens.. We pass them a few times to check their moods and direction.. They didnt move a step or even stick their heads up.. So we drive around them and park to get setup on them.. I've Seen them do this time and time again on where they go in this area.. We get setup perfectly and a vehicle drives by and stops and watches and turns around, sending them across the rd. I hit the call once, and one bird gobbled, at this point i figure they may have busted up slightly. I hit it once more and nothing.. We tried to see where they were in the field across the rd but couldn't see. I told Cole, that they will be back right here to this exact spot sooner or later that morning, and that it'd be a good idea to stay here. He didn't believe me, plus he was hungry and had eaten all his snacks already lol. So he wanted food and that's where we were heading, to the gas station. We get back to the car, and drive the long way out to see if we can find these birds.. No luck. As w edrive down the hill I said to him, I bet they crossed the rd back over already or are close to the rd in the thick stuff ready to cross.. We did a u turn a little further down and drove back around.. BOOM, there they are, right where I had last called.. All we can see is the 2 Toms.. I looked at him and said I told ya lol, He quickly responded back, my stomach can wait, lets go after them. Lol. Music to my ears!! YES! He melted my heart with those words lol.. So we drive down to get around them.. Get setup actually got them to answer only a few times but they were right where we last saw them.. but closer to a field corner. With the winds beginning to pick up, we got up and re set up closer this time.. made a call nothing, made another, nothing and one last one before my silence.. we waited maybe 20 minutes or so.. nothing. I told him I didn't like the setup lets move again, Then it hit me, they arent going to leave the dirt field.. its too windy to be around trees and cover.. plus there fresh dirt. So we go to check the field to try and find them.. we carefully bump a hen in the most perfect direction and no other birds, all I could think was this could be perfect. We slowly crept to a knoll in the field and BAM there is 3 red heads less than 100 yards. We get down belly crawl back and tuck are legs under the brush.. drop our vests and wait a moment, I let out some soft yelps and clucks like a hen poking around.. they barely even turn to look, no interest, I scratched the leaves, continue on occasion a soft yelp with some clucks etc.. they end up getting to about 50yrds following the 4 hens that were with them that we weren't aware of.. but not coming any closer.. With shots straight into the strong wind I wouldn't do it, or let him attempt. He was a little bummed, I looked to him and said it aint over yet.. Around 11am the wind really picked up which we used to our advantage, Around 1130am The birds started slowly drifting away from the 50 yard position they were holding to a corner, I said its now or never the wind is perfect lets try and cut them off and wait them out.. We did, dropped back, circles around them in came in, got right into a corner and patiently waited in the prone positions, I scratched the leaves under the brush instead of calling. The hens worked across the corner at an angle, just about at the guns limit.. but the toms came right to the corner, they get to about 35 yards and stop and begin to strut(can actually only see one at this time). I'm guessing they heard the leaves scratching since the wind was in there favor at this point.. I told him I couldn't see the 2nd LB, just the one, neither could he.. I had him slide over to the left and peek to try and find #2.. nothing. I then looked at the phone, it was 1145am.. I said slide back over here and drop the hammer on this bird(the grass was perfect height for belly crawls today.. he slides back to me and begins to take the safety off and says there's the 2nd one.. They were strutting in the most perfect line side by side, he was hidden completely behind the first. I looked at him and said lets do this, off with both safety's, I gave them an ugly sounding cut, and another worse sounding cut, followed by a 3rd, eventually after what seemed like forever, they finally turned to where both heads were visible. Counted to 3 and hammers were dropped simultaneously.. Birds hit the ground and never even flopped. That Tungsten hits like a brick! And the cerebration began.. To say I was happy is an understatement, I'm still grinning today from the joys and memories made yesterday. And so was he, What an incredible day.. Besides my first bird with my Dad, this hunt was top of the all time favorite list.. Both had a 10" rope and 1" pointy curved spurs .. 1 bird had a club foot with half a toe Sorry for the long drawn out story.. It was a day I had been waiting for, for a very long time! I also believe these are the 2 birds I missed 2 weeks ago, since they had the same amount of hens with them and the 1 lone Jake.. both days

  3. Here is a summary of my two Canadian gobblers... Day two....I had my blind set in a very open patch of mature hardwoods, which is fairly tough to find in the area that I hunt due to the predominace of thick cedar and ash cover, interspersed with large pastures..I knew from previous experience that this woodlot was a favored roosting and strutting zone on this property...Due to the fact that birds might be roosting literally within gun range of the blind, is was necessary for me to approach the blind as quietly as possible, in full darkness...I plan not to use a decoy...The woods were VERY open, but I have had limited success using decoys in the woods.. I was settled in the blind at 4:30 AM....At 4:45 AM, a gobbler sound off in front of the blind, no more than 75 yards away...Then another gobbled BEHIND the blind, at about the same distance..I was bracketed between two gobblers, a good position to be in...After those two birds had gobbled back and forth for a few minutes, a pack of coyotes lit up about 200 yards away, howling, barking and yipping...Suddenly the woods was FULL of gobbles, all around me...There were seven gobblers gobbling on all sides of me..I was effectively surrounded...Hehehe... After a few minutes, the gobbling slacked off, with the bird directly in front of me and the one directly behind me doing most of the gobbling... When flydown came, the bird in front of me started moving away, toward some fields that were a couple hundred yards away..The one behind me flew down, and that bird started moving directly toward my blind...The bird appeared in sight, but he was just out of range and it appeared he was heading past me toward the other turkeys..I did some soft clucking and purring, and he stopped strutted and gobbled for about ten minutes, but refused to come within range. He finally turned and walked toward the other turkeys .. Things settled down and throughout the morning things settled ,down and I called on and off and received an occasional answer, but nothing seemed hot...Then about 11:00 AM, a bird out in front of the blind gobbled at about 100 yards away.. I called softly and we he gobbled a few more times, but seemed to be moving off...Meanwhile I heard a few soft hen yelps behind me, but heard no gobbling from that direction... At NOON, I heard a hen PUTT behind me, and I looked out the back of the blind to see a hen running away.... A full minute later, crow cawed right overhead, and a gobbler gobbled DIRECTLY behind my blind..I looked out the back to see a gobbler in half strut, walking directly in the direction the hen had gone, at a pretty fair pace.. I got the gun out the window and shot him as he came out from behind a tree about 30 yards away..He dropped like a rock.. I approached the bird and he was sort of squatting, bleeding profusely from his mouth..I figured he was dying, and just watched for a couple of minutes expecting him to start flopping any minute..After a couple of minutes, he seemed to become more alert and started looking around...I decided I should wring his neck to finish him, and reached down and grabbed him by the neck. ALL HELL BROKE LOOSE..!!>> The bird started flopping and pummeling me with his wings, knocking my half off and rotating me in a complete 360... He broke loose and started flopping down through the woods..I At this point I knew it was no time for a finesse shot, or he might get away...AT about 25 yards I centered him in the scope and plastered his rear end...He rolled and stopped, but his head popped up again, so I sent my last shot downrange...This time I walked over and stood on his neck until he stopped flopping..I was shaking like a leaf by that time..I am getting too old for full contact turkey hunting....21 pounds, 9 1/2 inch beard and inch spurs.. Gobbler #2....The next morning I was back in the blind before daylight again and a gobbler started gobbling in front the blind...I could swear he was in the same tree where he had been the last 3 mornings...Another bird cut in on him now and then, so I knew there was more than one.. Flydown came and the birds did some gobbling and I did some calling, but they did not seem hot and gradually gobbled less and less.. About an hour later I got a response about 100 yards out, and eventually I could see a gobbler strutting through little gaps in the trees... Eventually, two gobblers and two hens worked into sight..One gobbler was glued to the hens, but the other one decided to come over strut for ME, and I wait until he stretched his neck and dropped him at about 40 yards..Good thing I had my shooting sticks, because I had my gun up a LONG time , and never could have made the shot without the rest.. When I shot, one hen too off, but the other hen and the gobbler ran over to the one I had shot, checking out the action as he flopped..The second gobbler was HUGE...Easily a 23 or 24 pound bird...I had to get out of my blind and shoo him away, telling him to come back next year.. Despite being the subordinate gobbler, he was a true trophy..21 pounds TWIN 9 1/2 beards and spurs of 1" and 1 1/8"... I would like to know the weight and spur length of that BIGGER one...Perhaps next year....

  5. Having sold my convertible several years back out of stupidity and later my motorcycle out of fear that a teen texting would leave my kids without their dad, I have been looking for an open air vehicle to use in the summer. Got a sweet deal on this rubicon recon with only 1,300 miles. Who knows, if I like it enough, the carpeted bed sissy truck may be sold. Going to give it some time to decide whether I really need both. Might be a toy or just a daily driver. But liking it so far.

  6. I was 4 when I started shooting this weatherby off “chuck sticks” Tripod laying down in prone position. The day this pic was taken, I leaned in too much since gun was hard to shoulder and knocked a few baby teeth out. I saw blood everywhere and immediately thought I shot myself somehow. I was gunshy for a few months afterwards Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  8. I've had some pretty fishy tasting salmon from Ontario, so I'm always leery, but I can't be happier with how this turned out. I've never had my wife react quite the way she did to any wild game. Simply no fish taste at all and turned out great. Highly recommend for any trout or salmon. It's not really a lot of work either, just takes time to smoke. Shared with the neighbors and they also agreed. Heck even my picky kids devoured it. Vac sealed and froze the rest and hoping that they taste just as good down the road. https://honest-food.net/how-to-smoke-salmon-recipe/

  11. I almost lost an eye doing just that. The BB came right back at me and hit the end of the barrel. Didn't break the balloon. I heard the metal sounding "tink" after the shot and the balloon moved. SO I tried it again and then realized what was happening. BB's are ricocheting mothers and I am not a fan. Started my daughter out on the pellet gun. I think the pellets are safer IMO

  13. Ide say around 2nd grade is when i got my first daisey bb gun. So 7-8 ish. By 10 i was walking around my grandmas farm with a single shot 22 taking out starlings and frogs and a squirrel from time to time. My daughters have been shooting since they were 5. And at 8 they had permission to shoot bb guns without me being with them all the time. I decided to teach them as young as possible simply because i wanted them to learn gun saftey as early as possible so it stuck with them for life.

  15. Making the tough decision to get my black lab put down today. She was diagnosed with a believed to be cancerous tumor about a month ago and she has gone down hill quick. She's 11 1/2 and we had her about 11 years. She won't eat anymore not even human food and has all she can do to stand up. One of the hardest parts of the whole ordeal is watching my youngest son struggle with the decision as he grew up with her. Back when we got her I really didn't even want a dog but was out voted 3 to 1 but since I'm the one that ended up taking her out the most I've become very close to her. Always hard losing a love one but I do believe we are making the right decision. Sent from my XT1650 using Tapatalk

  16. After boar hunting in November the outfitter said that since I had taken a few boars with them maybe I would consider a goat hunt in May . I had hunted goats at Parker Ranch, but not with Nahele so I said that I would. On the morning of the hunt, when we reached the property, I realized I was a little familiar with parts of the land that they hunt and , at times, spotted some really nice goats there and had even taken photos of a herd there a few years ago.....Since my previous posts did not involve this outfitter for goats I thought that I'd add it. The terrain is similar to where I had goat hunted before, which is open land with hills , ruts, and rocks so I always use a walking stick, and wear good hiking boots(and wear sunscreen).. It was cool in the morning, but got hot pretty fast and we had very little wind. We took a stand on a hill and after a short while we spotted goats in large herds in the distance. Some heading in our general direction. We didn't actually count the # of goats, but there were easily over 100 of them . There were some really nice billies. Some had horns that swept backwards which they refer to as "Hawaiian Ibex", and some had wide horns ,( those goats with WIDE horns are sometimes referred to as "Helicopter billies".) They are the same species, but just have different horn shapes. I wanted a goat with a wider spread so when an opportunity came for an "Ibex" I passed it up. Most were passing us at distance that I was not comfortable with to shoot so we discussed stalking and planned out a route to take. However , before we moved a herd came to within 200 yards and I picked out a billy, at 168 yds. and took him with a .257 Roberts. We butchered the meat, which gets donated , and I'm thinking of a horn mount rather than another Euro mount. Hawaii Island(The Big Island ) has wild cattle and I'm thinking of hunting a Vancouver Bull in the fall, if not I would redo a goat hunt. I attached a photo of the goat, but for some reason it posted upside down, but it gives an idea of his looks.

  25. I was able to convince my father to go out today and not a gobble yet. Were Hunting my best deer spot to try something different. This area is loaded with birds in the fall, but for some reason it’s hit or miss in the spring. Some huge gobblers around here though. Probably going to be the only time I can convince him to go out though. Had a young buck at 15 yards for 20 minutes and I’m currently watch g a rabbit from my car. I decided to go around scouting for deer spots this fall and I found a few really nice spots. I’m already excited for this season. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  28. Good game today for my son. 3-3 multi RBI at the plate. Played short stop (first time ever-doesn’t have the range or quickness IMO) and had multiple put-outs and no errors. He usually plays the corners if not pitching. He ended up closing out the game as well. 2 run lead; inherited a man on first and had to face batters 2, 3, 4(all play on his travel team but go to a neighboring school. K; groundout to 3rd and pop out to second. Think he threw more warmup pitches than game pitches. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I think it's a turkey nest as I have been seeing a hen in my yard a couple if times for the past week. I'm going to put a trail camera on it if I can, hopefully I haven't spooked her away. I live in Amherst not exactly out in the country. I don't expect them to hatch as I have only seen hens around for several years, never see any gobblers. We'll see??
