  1. No boat ramp, but a funny story..A couple of friends and I were catching turtles at a local pond..We got one REALLY big REALLY pissed off snapping turtle in the boat..Forgot to bring a sack, so the turtle is in the bottom of the boat just mad as hell and snapping like crazy...I am perched up on the bow of the little 12 foot rowboat, trying to keep out of his range.... We pull up to the dock. with the snapper still hissing and snapping at my heels....My two buddies jump up on the dock with me still perched on the bow.. The bow goes DOWN and I go head over heels into the water...Fortunately, the snapper stayed in the boat....

  3. This got brought up in the 'Live From The Water' thread, so thought it would make a fun thread of it's own. Where do i even begin??? I've run boats since my teen years, and have seen so many dumb things at boat launches. Even committed a few myself. I have seen three different tow vehicles sunk, due to not setting a parking brake while in neutral, or leaving it in reverse. Seen boats sunk at the launch, or take on a bunch of water, because the plug was never put in. I did this ONCE!! (never tell someone else to do this, and assume they did) I've seen some really good knock down drag out brawls, where even the "ladies" got in on the action! Seen young kids swimming right in the launch itself, as their parents are passed out drunk at the picnic table. Seen enough bumpers mangled by jackknifed trailers that a bodywork guy could retire. Seen grown men cry when after 25 attempts to back the boat into the water, they still could not do it on attempt number 26. Seen so many boob flashes as women attempt to board the boat and slip, or are moving around in the boat as it gets launched. (this is not a bad thing) mostly........ Seen the skegs on so many outboards torn off by the ramp because the motor was not raised and left in the down position. Even a few lower units took damage from this as well. Seen people pulled into the water that were holding the boatline, or just lost the boatline, and the boat just floats away with no one in it. I really could go on and on, but will leave plenty of room for other comments that are sure to come. If you ever want some really good free entertainment, just go to any boat launch on a weekend afternoon!!! One of my favorites is the Mayfield launch on Sacandaga. Two ramps of fun in the sun!

  7. Update: the gentle fabricating my new arm for the research study, should be completed in 2-3 weeks. I also just submitted to have a new arm built...when I originally started this thread that was the goal, but I had broken that hand. Insurance will not fix a hand, then approve the purchase of a new one, which is obviously understandable. It has been over a year since, so I would like to get a new arm/hand/wrist rotator, etc.... just figured I would update those following

  8. My passion has always been wingshooting...Back when I first started hunting, it was common to flush 20-30 grouse in a day..Wild pheasants were still common, especially up on the lake plains... And then there was WATERFOWL !! A few times back years ago, the duck season opened the same time as bow season for deer.....I could never imagine how sitting in a treestand for deer could as much fun as shooting ducks and geese... Most of the wingshooting opportunities are gone now, at least in my area....I still kill 2 or 3 dozen squirrels each year, and a few bunny rabbits over my buddie's beagles.. It has been years since I shot a grouse or a woodcock.. As far as deer hunting goes, I wouldn't bother if I did not like the meat so well....I would rather hunt small game, birds, or go fishing... Turkey hunting has been a passion of mine for the last 45 years or so....Still, I am not as gung ho as I was a few years ago...I no longer have the legs to do the fall hunt, and have mostly blind hunted for spring birds the last ten years or so...

  9. I love deer hunting and bear hunting. But I started hunting rabbit, squirrel, pheasant, grouse, duck, geese and other waterfowl. (I love Rail hunting) All those seasons opened prior to my first deer season in DEC 1970, and when I got my first hunting license at 16 I wanted to hunt everything there was to hunt. I love ALL hunting and probably spend as many days in the field hunting small game as big game. Not sure why more people don't hunt a lot of small game, other than I suspect they don't know where to hunt and don't get many when they do. Then again, many bow hunt deer a lot now too. The bow season is very long and overlaps small game. Small game and waterfowl hunting was huge when there were few whitetail to be found. That was it's heyday. Now, there are lots of deer and a lot less small game to be found. Still, it's a different kind of hunting experience that offers joys one will not experience in deer hunting. Almost forgot to talk about Turkey hunting. There were NO turkey even around when I was young. I remember the stockings and the years waiting for a hunting season. Now the spring season just keeps me from doing more trout fishing. The fall season is mixed in with all sorts of small game hunting for me. I guess I'm addicted to hunting and it is a choice I made willingly.

  11. Ya think someone would make a hitch that'd do that.... Oh, never mind, someone may already have one. (although I put a work trailer in some pretty dang small spaces, most folks think we hand roll it there)

  12. Worst I had was launching a friend's boat with my truck on a smallish ramp. It was a 42' fountain on a ramp that was meant for small fishing boats lol the fisherman weren't thrilled and I felt bad but we got her done. They probably didnt like the sounds of over 1000 hp either. Edit last season I saw two different people take the jet ski trailer off the vehicle and manually walk it down the ramp to the water, then back up and re hook to avoid backing It up lol

  14. It's not so much letting them drive Cuomo is concerned with. It's getting them the ability to vote. He wants to make sure Trump isn't re-elected and he wants their votes when he runs again. He'll accept all of the crime and carnage to attain those two things. All part of the leftist plan people, all part of the plan.

  16. My experience at a FORD Dealership I stopped by the Ford Dealership the other day to look at the new 2019 F-150.. Just for fun, I took it out for a test drive. I wanted to sense that new truck "feel" before I get too old. The salesperson (a nice looking lady wearing a 'RESIST' lapel pin) sat in the passenger seat next to me, describing the truck and all its "wonderful" options. The seats were of particular interest. She explained that the seats directed warm air to your butt in the winter and directed cool air to your butt in the summer heat. Feeling like messing with her, I mentioned that this must be a Republican truck. Looking a bit angry, she asked why I thought it was a Republican truck. "I explained that if it were a Democrat truck, the seats would just blow smoke up your ass year-round!" I had to walk back to the dealership but it was worth it.

  17. I very rarely fish from a boat, but the last time I went was with my grandfathers boat that he just got (and only took out a few times in total). Took us about 20 tries to back the trailer up to get pick up the boat at the end of the day. Only reason we werent there all night trying was because a nice guy offered to get in the car and do it for us. He probably had enough of watching us fail horribly, than him being a nice guy. Thank god I fish from shore mostly

  18. Buddy was a trapper in high school , once in a while reaching into a runway , he’d pull out a snapping turtle , they were pretty lethargic due to,cold weather . He brought home one the size of a trash can lid , had it in a large cardboard box in the family room, that, thing scared the crap out of me !

  31. The ABS light came on because the front wheel bearings needed to be repacked with grease. Then the OVERDRIVE/OFF light started flashing and it wouldn't shift from 1st to 2nd gear. Then the "check engine" light came on, and the speedometer stopped working. This all happened in about 5 minutes on Saturday morning. All is well now, though. Newly repacked wheel bearings and a new speed sensor. Oh, and new front brake pads that were worn down to the core. The truck will be twenty years old in a couple of months, and it hauled ten full loads of black locust firewood last week. I won't freeze to death this winter. It's a tool. Not a luxury.

  32. Genesee river boat launch at Charlotte in the 90’s. Middle age guy with a brand spanking new Sea Ray open bow with an I/O, maybe 17 ft. He’s coming out and we’re in line to go in. Gets the boat on the trailer, pulls it out and parks right there at waters edge. Starts coiling his ropes, wiping down the boat while we’re all waiting or drop in. After a few minutes guys are bitching at him to clear the ramp. He took his sweet damn time putting everything away. He wasn’t really being a dick, he seemed clueless but was somewhat apologetic and I believe he said it was his first boat. He finally gets in the truck and starts to pull away. He never clipped it, and that nice new roller trailer promptly dumped his brand new boat on the ground just in front of the ramp. What a disaster for that guy.

  33. I once forgot to take off the transom straps. Kept backing in, till my front tires were almost in the water, and the front of the boat started floating. Another tournament angler saw me do this, and I was the butt of many jokes for quite some time................grin. I earned that one. Never be in such a hurry that you don't do a final walk around, to check everything before backing down.

  34. In watkins glen I watched as this guy came ripping in backs up yelling at his wife . She gets out redfaced visibly upset . He is just muttering swearing the whole time... hands her the rope backs down the ramp slams on the brakes boat slides half way off and he guns it forward. She is yelling at him to stop and he yells shut the f up he knows what he is doing . He drags the glass boat up the ramp until the lower unit snags the ramp boat come all the way off the trailer landing on the ramp with a big crack.. Wife is in tears .. jerk off gets out and starts yelling at her . He wants help pushing it into the water. Couple of us help him get it floating rather than drag it off the ramp. He actually thought he could pull it up onto the trailer with a hand winch.... then dumbass tells her to get into the boat .. fires up the motor and away he goes . He didn't get out of the canal before turning around as the boat was taking on water from the crack in the hull. Now he wants the ramp cleared so he can save his boat ... his wife walked away sobbing. Would have been hilarious except we were all worried about the wife.

I gave him a heads up and his response was " you know I never even thought of that" .... he was there grandfather.... Imagine having to tell your son or daughter that story......

  38. i've seen some sh!t too. I do sometimes feel bad for the guy/gal who is learning the whole boat/trailer/launch thing and some a55shole is impatient and giving them a hard time. Although, if you're new to this thing, dont go during a busy period. It does take some practice though.

  39. Well the dumbest and funniest thing I ever saw at a boat launch pier was a Hasidic Jewish couple with a young child trying to get into a rented row boat at a state park. All three were dressed how you would typically see a Hasidic Jew dressed. They were not wearing anything close to what an average person would be wearing for a day at a state park. So first, the Mom and child step off the pier into the boat to seat themselves. All good until Daddy, all 250 lbs plus of him decides to skip lively off the pier and into the boat. As you probably guessed, that didn't end well. All three of them took an unexpected bath in the lake fully clothed! They all had life vests on so they were safe, but soaked up to their necks nonetheless. Dad's yarmulke even fell off his head and it almost floated away! LOL

  40. I've been helping my friend launch his boat and reload back on trailer the last few times when we go. First mishap on first venture for me on it :Seen people pulled into the water that were holding the boatline, or just lost the boatline, and the boat just floats away with no one in it. Yup, I'm on boat and it floats away into the harbor. He's yelling swim back with a tow line and I'm yelling I can't swim Don't even remember how I got back to shore and I'm still traumatized over the ordeal. Last year he took me and my daughter out a few times. Boat on trailer and I'm in boat taking things out to put in his truck. I reach leg out of boat onto step plate of trailer to jump out of boat, foot slips and gets wedged between frame of trailer and boat with my leg bent the wrong way and full weight of my body and me hanging upside down .I was scared $hitless as it happened so fast. He's a smallish guy and grabbed my arms to pull me up with no success. Somehow I reached around backwards and grabbed edge of boat to pull myself up foot still stuck. Friend frees my foot and I let off another tirade of words my daughter has only heard on the bus. NO idea how I didn't pop out my knee, tear Achilles etc. Other than my own 2 personal mishaps I have nothing to report

  41. Worse thing I ever did was I backed my small 14 ft down the cheviot ramp and had rope through rear back window.... Pulled down fast then slammed brakes and pulled truck back up.... Worked good as usual , only problem was rope wasn't tied to boat... Realized it and parked truck to run down the ramp to dock which was wet from rain...... I fell and slid down the steep dock and cell phone fell into river... then i had to jump in river and go swimming for my boat... Somehow there was not one person there to witness it....

  42. I'm not really either I guess. I'd consider myself a hunter. Love the venison and really like doing things like making our own sausage to enjoy. But I enjoy the challenge of the process. (not just the hunt). I enjoy the satisfaction of practicing with an implement and trying to master it. (or get as good as I can get...lol). That is one reason I do things like getting into reloading, bought a crossbow and will be hunting this year with a recurve during archery. It's why I went to an Encore platform for some of my hunting. (I know Pygmy....so sorry about carrying that ugly gun). I practice to understand my limitation with each weapon. That way I can make the most humane kill I can. Bad decisions and pushing beyond ones skill set it a huge contributing factor of some of the horror stories we all hear during the season. Thanks for the acknowledgment on the F2F program. We are excited to get it rolling again this year. We have picked up some new mentors becasue of what they saw in the program and wanted to be a part of it. With more mentors we are upping the class size and right now we have 7 confirmed that are going to participate.

I wasn’t there to solve societies problems, just help the guy lying on the ground . And yes, I’ve held options very similar to many posting . oh and I’ve never had a FB account, it seems largely narcissistic at best , and full of false info , ( I do look at stuff from time to time on Mrs. Nomads )
