  2. For the first time ever, I will be hunting without any cams and no scouting. Been hunting the same parcels for 6 years. Just going to rely on my experience to tell me where and when to be in the right spot. I am kind of excited about the going in blind approach. The questions is whether it will increase or decrease motivation without knowing what exactly is around. We shall see.

  3. I tend to be mostly flaccid myself these days, but I do have my moments, like after a couple dozen oysters on the half shell and maybe a couple of blue diamonds...Unfortunately, it's either " all dressed up and no where to go" OR " lead in the pencil and nobody to write to"...…<< sigh >>….

  6. I think the point Belo is that people's belief regarding whether marriage must be between a man and women or can be same sex comes into conflict and the media usually paints those that believe the former in a poor light (despite that it was the popular view not so long ago). Like the cake maker that declined to make a cake for a same sex marriage due to their religious beliefs that only a man and women should be married. They were sued because they refused the make the cake for a ceremony that is contrary to their own religious beliefs. Somewhat ironic that some claim a lack of tolerance but are not tolerant or understanding of a different belief system. Those that adhere to biblical Christian values are definitely under fire these days - regardless of race.

  10. I shot this buck on 10/2/15. At the time, I had no experience in taxidermy but was interested in learning so a friend of mine offered to walk me through the process at cost. In the end, I basically learned nothing as I more or less just sat back and watched as he rushed through mounting my deer. Needless to say, the final product showed the lack of time spent on it. The following year I started doing a little taxidermy on the side so I decided to remount this buck for a shop display as I didn't want anyone thinking that the original mount was my work. I did notice that the spread had shrunk some but thought it was the natural drying of the skull plate. The inside spread ended up shrinking a full two inches...not cool on a very narrow rack to begin with!!! Long story short...I couldn't stand looking it and I vowed to redo it again if I was able to find a nice, early season cape to use. Plus, my mounts have improved ALOT over the past three years. After season I was able to get my hands on a beautiful Sept 30th cape from Wisconsin on a taxidermy forum that I'm a member of. A few weeks ago I tore the mount apart and found that the skull plate had cracked from where my friend had drilled it and the bondo filler had come loose. I repaired the fracture and set out to bring my best bowkill back to life AGAIN... Before: The first remount that I did. Wish I'd kept pics of my friend's mount with the original cape... After: Believe it or not, it is VERY difficult to take good pics of a mount where everything is in proportion. The phone camera doesn't seem to pick up the colors in a true to life tone either...in person the colors in the mount looks better than expressed through these pics. Overall, I'm very happy with how it turned out and don't plan on ever mounting this guy again...lol.

  14. No scouting for us. We do very little actual walking around on our properties. Will have a few trail cams going out in September. That will give us an idea of what is around. Once bow season starts, we will be out there to observe more. Then adjust to what we are seeing. But just this morning, I was at a local place getting my coffee, and a neighbor was telling me about seeing two GIANT bucks fairly close by. He's a no bs kinda guy, so I left him with a smile and bought his coffee.

  26. They are trying to bring down everything that used to be deemed moral, honorable and traditional. If you are white, straight, christian and have a strong work ethic you don't fit into what they are pushing. Their message has never been clearer. It's all about the poor blacks, undocumented immigrants, LGBT, women and their right to abortions (even at 9 months), criminals, etc. It's quite sickening to watch. Absolutely everything the liberal media says and does puts this second group on a pedestal while they take every opportunity to show the first group in a bad light every chance they get. Yeah, I know FOX news can be ridiculous, too. If they would just take the high road and not use the same tactics as the left is using they would have way more credibility. Unfortunately, these days it's all about brainwashing the masses. Between TV, internet, social media no one can think for themselves anymore.

  27. All I can say is that the financials show to me that the women’s team is under-compensated, again, when looking at the financials. Union negotiations could have been a bad deal, or done not in good faith if the USSF’s financial layout blurred the income streams to the point it was not easily determined who made what. This was cleared after the audit was conducted. Women bring in more gross revenue, spend less in expenses, and have higher net profit. Any BS about how one soccer player acts, how hairy her crotch may be, or how little people may agree or disagree with her beliefs is irrelevant to me based on facts of compensation. Also, I fully disagree that supporting this scenario is going against the grain of any American values systems. Same with the insinuation that people who think the women are under-compensated do not understand how people are paid in a free market. There may be people with better business acumen than me on this site, as we don’t always know backgrounds. What I can say is that I personally lead and am responsible for a P+L that is larger than what these soccer players are discussing. It’s clear to me the under-compensation exists. I will speak no more on this topic. Enjoy. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  32. Thanks Grampy, I am happy to share this part of my life. I am honestly a very private person, and truly never advertise my business, but when it comes to this I seriously enjoy it. If I knew what I know now, when I was 18, I would have probably pursued prosthetics as a career.

  33. Yep that works. Just make sure you are not lost for an extended period of time. You keep playing with that belly and hungry people may take notice and you might be next on the menu. Nothing says food like someone with a big belly and bunny suit LOL! This can work, and I have done it but only for a very short term situation, walking back to my car situation. It's not a good idea in a long term situation. You can develop 'foot rot', which is about as much fun as as having a mule kick you in the face

  40. By filing a lawsuit against their employer, they are no longer negotiating their pay. They are asking BIG GOVERNMENT to force their employer to pay them more. They are suing for more money and they have no case. It's designed to make them look like victims, claim America is sexist, attack Trump for not supporting them and continue with their attacks on everything in America they can make look bad. All part of the "fundamental change" leftists have been salivating over for a decade now. For a women who claims we need more love in America, she is sure a hateful shrew.

  42. So I have zero experience fishing for stocked rainbow trout from a canoe. My fishing gear is limited to river fly fishing gear and some “bass stuff” and even that would be seen as limited. Heading to a lake tomorrow that supposedly holds rainbow and wonder how I could get my hand on one- I do have a trolling motor that I can rig to the canoe but no depth finders or fancy treeguy stuff! Hopeful some of the more helpful members chime in...and then there’s the guarantee I’m gonna take a hit from the WNY crew!! Preemptively, your pizza sux! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  43. Good thread! Some really good info here! Some of you guys carry a ton of stuff makes me wonder how far in you’re really going if you’re going to be toting all that stuff? My survival equipment is very small and light. From years of doing it something’s have been added and and taken out over the years but has stayed constant for about 5 years now. Everything I carry fits in a very small wool fanny pack. 8x9’ piece of tyvec ironed and vacuum sealed in a package the size of a sandwich bag and thinner than a box of matches. Small Corona folding saw “this is more for processing deer for the pack out but is dual purpose in a survival situation” Life straw 550 cord 10ft with inner strands 30ish’ with inner strands removed. Lighter x2 Tinder, can’t remember the name of the company but they come in a pack the size of a hard candy wrapper and have a fiber material that lights easy and stays burning for a bit. I have 2 of them in my pack 2 large construction trash bags folded and vacuum sealed “smaller and a sandwich baggie and thinner than a book of matches” 1 small single aaa led flashlight. 2 1ft sq pieces of aluminum foil for boiling water/cooking. I’m sure I’m forgetting stuff but that’s about it. I feel 100% confident that I could survive way longer than I would want to with what I carry into the woods when I hunt the ADK’s. I haven’t been on in a while but how is there 130 posts on survival and stormy hasn’t passed on all of his wisdom? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  44. Great thread! How did I miss this? I'm an avid hiker and take the warning, "Be prepared to spend a night in the woods" seriously. You can plan so much, but it's that 1% that might get you! Could be a medical event, a bad step that leads to fall and serious injury or simply a bad navigation decision. Now what? Keep your head and think through your options. Is self-rescue or hunkering down the best choice? Make a game plan and set goals. The tools you have on-hand and/or skill set that allows you to craft them will weigh heavily into your chances of success. Here's what I always take in my pack, whether it's a day hike or overnight: Shelter: Top priority right here. I carry a basic space blanket, duct tape, safety pins, paracord and SOL bivy. Total weight is less than a pound. My goal would be to build a simple lean-to fortified with evergreen branches and leaves to keep me dry and off the ground. Water: I have 3 to 5 options on every hike. Primarily, I use my own hack of a Sawyer mini filter and a Platypus 2L Big Zip bag. Simply scoop the bag into a stream and let gravity do the work. This fills my 1L nalgene and 1L Platypus soft bottles at a rate of 2 minutes/L. My backup method is carrying a bottle of iodine tablets. These weigh nothing and there's no reason not to have them. Next, there is the morning dew or rain water that can be collected, as needed. Lastly, I'll drink directly from the source and risk the beaver fever if desperate enough. It can stave off dehydration before the ill effects kick in days later. In the winter, I always bring a JetBoil so it's easy enough to boil snow or water. Only once have I needed to go to option #2 (iodine tablets) because a piece of downfall had unknowingly ripped open my outter pack mesh pouch and the filter fell out. Fire: Three methods at all times. 1. Bic lighter. 2. Storm proof matches in a waterproof container. 3. Ferro rod and steel. In addition, I always bring a candle, Wet Fire tablets and a baggie of dryer lint and vaseline. Birch bark is an excellent tinder that can be found almost anywhere in the ADK's. The candle and Wet Fire are most useful with wet wood; you need to get a constant flame on your tinder and larger pieces to dry them out enough to get the fire going. I never thought of bringing a flammable liquid, but tiki torch oil works very well because of it's slower burn rate. Food: I always pack extra so this is never a concern. Clif bars and jerky are my favorites along with peanut M&M's. You can live 3 weeks without any food so I'm sure that I could forage enough berries, worms and grubs to survive in a true worst-case scenario. First aid: I pack very little, actually. Basic band-aids and gauzes, some duct tape wrapped around a mini Sharpie, hydrocolloid bandages and silicone toe sleeves for blisters, butterfly bandages, Neosporin, some single-use alcohol wipes, Aleve and chewable benadryl. My worst "injuries" have been blisters, bug bites and some stings from one a**hole ground wasp. Misc: Headlamp with extra lithium batteries (since I typically hike at night), a Surefire E2D LED with extra batteries, spare headlamp, bandana, map & compass, spare boot laces, bug spray, sun screen, baby wipes, spare Smartwool socks, my Arc'teryx shell, seasonal layers and a multi-tool. This might sound like a lot of stuff, especially for day hikes, but it's really not. My typical hike pack is an 18L Osprey Talon that weighs 10-15 lbs with everything. I'll lay it all out and take a pic another time.
