  2. 7/12/19: only could check 2 cams because the greens were so high. Need to go back with atv. Brought truck for first. Got at least 4 different, maybe 5 bucks on cam. Of course the biggest (red circle) I think isn’t a great pic. First year not putting throw & grow down in the spring and definitely less pics than I’m used to. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  4. Unexpectedly good shoot this morning over a cut alfalfa field. Birds were flying steady. Killed 27. Was able to kill 2 birds with one shot 3 times on passing doubles. One group of 5 came in and none left. Was a really fun shoot

  6. An ex coworker s husband of my wife told me he shot a deer at 100 yards with one shot with Glock .40 cal. and it dropped. He was a Buffalo cop and I’m like ya ok buddy. Oddly enough he lost his job for lying under oath on a case and lost his wife and job. I saw that coming years back Like many stated a better caliber to make a clean humane kill much better option

  7. Not really the right tool for the job. I'd stick with a slug gun, or center-fire rifle at least .243 caliber. So many things can and do go wrong when you try hunting with minimal cartridges.

  11. I became a NJ volunteer firefighter when I was 30. I'm 63 now and still do it as a Class A interior firefighter, but now with the department in my NY town. I'm in great shape for my age and like to stay fit so I can do all the things I enjoy doing. Being single, staying in shape helps too. To be a firefighter you have to stay fit. I was also an EMT in NJ and the Captain of the squad for 5 years before they went to career service in the town's EMS. Never saved any lives directly as a firefighter, but saved a couple as an EMT. Delivered a baby on the side of the road once too. I saw a lot of gruesome stuff as a volunteer over the years, but I was used to it, having grown up in a family funeral home and working part time for the county morgue when I was younger. I hate to think I'm cold, but I've learned it's a fact of life and I'm there to assist as much as I can, no matter how bad the victim is. I even help when they are gone and just need to be removed from the scene. I've become fearless of death, and don't even fear my own, but it does make me really appreciate life. I thought about becoming a career firefighter, but I was over 30 at the time, even though I made it into the top 10% in the civil service exams and physical fitness test when I took it. I learned how the commissioners can pass over a man 3rd on the civil service list to hire their buddy's kid in 4th place. Then they reshuffle the deck and jump over you again to hire another friend. Nepotism was a big problem back in the days of many men applying for the half dozen openings. Today I would be concerned about working in a govt position where the state can go bankrupt, stop paying you and void your pension. I'm waiting to see what happens when California goes bankrupt, because I'm certain it's going to happen. NY State recently passed a law covering us for cancer if we get it, as long as we've been a volunteer for awhile and still are when it happens. I've been real good about cleaning my gear and showering after a call over the years and am a big proponent of frequent hand washing. I'm an old firefighter. What I do best now is teach younger firefighters how to become an old firefighter. Sorry for the diatribe, but these things occupy a lot of my mind and it just feels good to let it out every so often.

  15. Main deer rifles ready for season. Put new scopes on them this year so had to dial them in. Good to go. 30/30 will see the most woods time. I don't bother with the muzzleloader or shotgun for now. I now they are good to go. But got this put of the way . Got to start a little bow shooting soon. On the way to range had to jump on the brake to miss an otter crossing the road. Right by a swamp and Creek just about a 1.5 from the house. Was cool to see , glad I didnt hit it.

  21. I think thats what my brother did up there great program. He didnt make it though one night he was on call. He went to a call involving a bad kid incident and it messed his head up good for a good year. Give alot of respect to people in those fields its not easy i know alot of volunteer firefighters that have seen some messed up stuff.

  22. Back to the fields for two games today, I'm hoping we win both. As you tournament vets know, the most important part of all of this is not that the girls have fun, not sportsmanship, not camaraderie or any of that nonsense. Its that they get a low seed so you dont have to get there early Sunday!!

  23. First card check at this spot...never saw this guy before. He's definitely got the stubby body proportions of a piebald. Would make a cool full bodied mount in another year or two. Tried to edit the pics to remove some of the glare.

  27. Having hunted one of your properties, and seeing the layout of another. Plus seeing what you've taken over the years. I can honestly say you don't really need cams! They'll be there! No doubt about it. Each hunt will be like getting to unwrap new big surprise! I'll be there, last weekend of October. Maybe we can unwrap one together!!!!

  29. What I am carrying on that trip to the ADK's is still very light weight. Like I said, it may seem like a lot, but it really isn't. For me it's all about peace of mind. I won't be just stopping by a trail head to take a pic, there are no trail heads were I'm headed. I will most likely be strolling about 5-7 miles out per hunt on that trip. That may not be as much as some can do, but that's my goal with a back that after 5 miles is screaming in pain, but I want to push it, so I am being prepared if my back gives out and I can't walk back. I again want to mention relying solely on gear that needs batteries or even solar power isn't a good idea. But, I digress, I can explain why this is, but I can't understand it for you. I prefer carabiners to secure a tarp shelter, mainly because they can serve multiple proposes. It takes time to develop a kit that works for you in this type of situation, trial and error, this was a great piece of gear, this sucked, that was great, that sucked..... Set up your gear for where you hunt/hike and the terrain. Sorry, again, I am going to say this, don't just read books, get and practice those skills. I know, "broken record", but ya know what, this is one broken record that might save your live.

  33. Many relatively shallow ponds like this have have mayfly hatches in the evening just before dark....Take your fly rod and some big ( #10 or #12) dun colored dries and you may coax a strike or two on the surface.. Use a serpentine cast to minimize drag...Current or not DRAG is DRAG and if the fly is moving they will NOT hit it... A neighbor of mine once had small pond stocked with rainbows ( some big ones too) and he fed them dry dog food every day... I tied some " dog food flies" out of spun deer hair and caught some trout on them..They were seldom fished for and unsophisticated, but TROUT are TROUT..If there was any unnatural drag on the fly they would not touch it.. It had to be floating like a nugget of Purina Dog Chow...

  34. I shot this buck on 10/2/15. At the time, I had no experience in taxidermy but was interested in learning so a friend of mine offered to walk me through the process at cost. In the end, I basically learned nothing as I more or less just sat back and watched as he rushed through mounting my deer. Needless to say, the final product showed the lack of time spent on it. The following year I started doing a little taxidermy on the side so I decided to remount this buck for a shop display as I didn't want anyone thinking that the original mount was my work. I did notice that the spread had shrunk some but thought it was the natural drying of the skull plate. The inside spread ended up shrinking a full two inches...not cool on a very narrow rack to begin with!!! Long story short...I couldn't stand looking it and I vowed to redo it again if I was able to find a nice, early season cape to use. Plus, my mounts have improved ALOT over the past three years. After season I was able to get my hands on a beautiful Sept 30th cape from Wisconsin on a taxidermy forum that I'm a member of. A few weeks ago I tore the mount apart and found that the skull plate had cracked from where my friend had drilled it and the bondo filler had come loose. I repaired the fracture and set out to bring my best bowkill back to life AGAIN... Before: The first remount that I did. Wish I'd kept pics of my friend's mount with the original cape... After: Believe it or not, it is VERY difficult to take good pics of a mount where everything is in proportion. The phone camera doesn't seem to pick up the colors in a true to life tone either...in person the colors in the mount looks better than expressed through these pics. Overall, I'm very happy with how it turned out and don't plan on ever mounting this guy again...lol.

  39. Mine is way more accurate than you’ll ever be. Accuracy isn’t an issue. Would I carry it in the deer woods? No. Will it work for a deer gun? If you’re willing to hold off and pass on all but the best shot opportunity’s then absolutely! If it was the only gun I owned and wanted to deer hunt with it I would load my own hard cast lead bullets around the 115gn range loaded as hot as possible using a mold with as large of a meplate that will feed reliably. 45. not sure if it's been mentioned yet, but another good, but can be expensive idea is to buy items with dual uses. For example, I have a large gerber knife that could be a small machete but also filet a fish. It wouldn't be ideal for either, but saves from carrying both. Also on the knife is a built in compass, bottle/can opener and there's a a removable flint fire starter in the handle. I have backup for some of these things as well, but when you're really talking about day trip survival and not "pack the kids up and drive" type survival, you'll be regretting the extra weight quickly. Lots of food prep equipment can be handled this way too with things like multi-tool style cutlery and filtering straws that can be reused over and over. also not sure if i saw this, but I keep 2 items that are battery powered with hand crank backups. A weather/fm/am radio that i keep charged, but also can charge via solar and hand crank. It auto-tunes to emergency channels. And a similar style hand crank flashlight. I of course have a nice led battery flashlight, but the hand crank is a solid option. As a type this, I should check to see if i can find a handcrank battery charger for rechargeable double A's. That might be even more efficient.
