  1. I was out squirrel hunting this morning on some local public land... I was standing in a hickory grove, watching the trees when I saw a movement off to my left... There was a small ( perhaps 50-60 lb) bear walking right toward me....I watched him until he got about ten feet away and did not seem to see me or change course....I pivoted a few degrees toward him so that my shotgun muzzle was pointed toward him...Another step or two and I could have touched him with the muzzle... Boo-boo saw the movement and bolted, but only ran about 20 yards...The wind was right and he could not smell me...He walked across broadside in front of me and then continued on his way... That is the closest I have ever been to a live black bear in the woods..Pretty cool..I'm going to have to start carrying one of those silly phone/cameras you guys all have, just for such opportunities..

  2. First time for everything. For those who have seen it, this is about that spike buck that’s been tearing up my buck target below my back yard. I posted a bunch of pics a couple of weeks ago in the trailcam pic section and he’s regularly been coming back almost every night. Started to beat up my bear target too. Got home from work a little while ago and while letting the dog out, I heard that buck tearing up the target behind the house. I walk down the side of the gully, the deer target has his head on the ground, and that spike is just going ballistic pushing my bear target around 20 yds from the deer target. I was able to put the deer back together without that buck even noticing me. He was in a rage on that bear, snorting, almost woofing like a dog, pushing that foam bear back and forth, and only 20 yards away. So I yelled at him loudly to knock it off. That got his attention. He saw me, postured and then started coming at me with his head down. I slid behind the tree next to me, and I have to admit, was getting a bit nervous. He was pawing at the ground, and stepping toward and back from me. I picked up some rocks, and as I walked away toward the house he freaking bluff charged me to within about 10 yds as I stepped behind a different tree. Not afraid to admit I was getting scared here. He kind of calmed down for just a bit, and I walked toward the house kind of threading trees to keep trees between us, and hit my back lawn about 30 yards away from him. No more trees. That damn buck started coming in at me again. I held my hands up and just yelled all kinds of crap at him. He stopped, and I had three rocks. I freaking missed with the first two, and barely glanced his shoulder with the third. That was enough to get him to trot off, but only to maybe 50 yards. I hustled back to my back door and when I looked back, he was slowly closing with his head posturing high this time. WTF, WTF, WTF! My freaking heart was pounding, and I have to admit, walking out back from the house in the dark in a couple of weeks is going to have me pretty jumpy! He’s just a little youngster, but 10 yards from me, pissed off and testosterone fueled, he seemed big enough! I need to plan for a next encounter and come out looking a bit more in charge.

  4. This is Red's half sister, Sky.. She's 3 weeks old now, I bring her home on 10/13, she will be hunting right out of the gate, nothing to long, drawn out, but she will be out.. She's the 3rd largest of 12 and the biggest female.. Wife fell in love with her so it was inevitable she would be ours.. Will be doing preserve hunts with the two of them starting in January, she will be 5 months old, give her some serious experience for a few months. Put a few pics of Red in there, buddy said I can see it now "Red Sky in the mornings, pheasants take warning!!".. LOL

  6. I usually put a Hub Blind on a 6' high platform that I have on the bank of a pond . They usually collapse during the winter months and are cold . My oldest son said , "why don't I build you a more solid blind " . I bought some windows and helped with the framing and he did the rest . Matt , Nick and I set it up last Saturday . I took some pictures today .

  7. Are you going for the early ML season ? What areas are you looking at ? I will be up there (on the North-West corner of the Adirondack park) in October, for a couple days of crossbow and the first three days of the early ML season. Does are legal then in zone 6C, but not across the road in zone 6F, so I will spend most of my time in 6C. If I do manage to fill my "antlerless only" tag, I will cross over to 6F, because there are more bears on that side of the road. I have taken a few does up there at that time of year, but never had a good chance at a buck at that time. They are a lot easier to find after the first good snow (I have killed a couple up there over the long Thanksgiving weekend). This has been a much colder than average year so far though, so maybe we will see some snow up there in mid-October It sounds like you will be near water. If there is a distinct browse line, on the pines around the lake, then you will know you are in an area with a good deer population. If there are green pine branches hanging down to the water, it would be best to move on to a different spot. I also look forward to the fishing at that time of year, especially when it is a little warmer. A few years ago, I caught my biggest smallmouth in a long time up there in mid October (on a bucktail jig). A day or two later, I killed one of the does that was keeping the "snags" trimmed all around the lake shore for me. I usually hunt the mornings and late afternoons and fish mid-day. I can't think of any place on the face of the earth where I would rather be at that time. Certainly there is no finer scenery anywhere else. It is a toss-up, as to which is better up there - peak fall foliage and spectacular fishing, or first good snow-cover in the mountains and great buck hunting.

  10. Just got back from going out to dinner at a place we always love. What a shit show...different waitresses that truly acted like we were crashing a party of their locals. Waitress could not even bring our check over, and when we walked up to pay, she, or the other woman didn’t say a word. Gave her cash, and got my change without a single word from her...unreal, I could have stayed in NY to deal with that. Anyways, we had a nice 49 mile ATV cruise today, no moose! I can’t understand why though as for the area we were in. More Katahdin pics @Jdubs

  11. Glad you're OK Jerry! A wild animal can be unpredictable. If that buck lives a couple more years, he'll run off every other buck nearby. Just a real aggressive buck. I killed a buck a couple years ago with my bow that we called Big Bully. He was three when I killed him, but only had a decent four point rack. We named him that when he was a yearling spike, because any time he saw another deer, he'd run it off! Even bigger bucks!! At two years old we watched him run off a mature eight point!!! Didn't matter to him! When he stepped out in the open with other deer, he immediately laid his ears back and postured. Does, fawns, bigger bucks, didn't matter. He truly was a big bully! The day I shot him, I saw a nice eight going away from me so I grunted. A short time later here comes Big Bully down the run looking for the deer that grunted with his ears laid back. When he stopped ten yards in front of me and looked out to the brush field, I put an arrow through his boiler room. Could swear we heard the other deer in the area having a party, as we loaded him up! Pic's of him in the bow harvest thread from 2017.

  12. Indian Lake area. I have a few options, health will dictate how many I get in. Like I said in the past about this, we rented a cabin. If I take a buck, I will be removing and cooking the back straps that night. As for full processing, I will have no choice but to get it done, and get it cooling fast. Depending on how far from the cabin I am I may have to quarter the deer to get it out. This is going to be a tough week hunting. Me, my bow, and big woods. Come whatever may, I'm not putting pressure on myself, I am going to enjoy my hunts, and just hike my own hike.

  25. Late lunch today in Rapallo, near Portofino and Genoa. I ordered a seafood soup of the house and a grilled seafood platter. When they brought out the soup first, I honestly thought they had brought out the entree first by accident!. Very good, and very fresh. Damned if no hot sauce, though. They have a hot peppers in oil condiment, but it's not the same.

  26. Pulled it away after attaching tow strap. Moving slowly so as not to incite the jackets was not easy. But all good. Tire repaired and trails cut. Two stings was a blessing. Could have been way worse. Thanks for all the ideas.

  27. Something odd going on down in Steuben County lately; between Dan's bear and Jerry's spike buck the juvenile's are wreaking havoc and revenge, turning the tables on the hunters!

  30. The floor of the platform is mesh . It has a trap door in the middle of the floor . I put a piece of carpet upside down over the mesh floor and cut it so the 2 piece trap door can be used . I plan to use it for crossbow and gun . No need to camo paint it as the deer still go by .

  32. Be careful Jerry....Seems like I by read somewhere that more people are killed annually by deer in North America than by any other animal, and they weren't talking about traffic accidents.. Spike buck or not, he is a very strong wild animal...
