  1. Could it be true do I win first harvest of the year? Almost bailed on going to camp do to being sick, glad I didn't. First buck in four years shot him at 6pm 20 yards broadside couldn't have asked for a better shot. I kinda rushed it he came from over my left shoulder and all I could see was his body which was very large. Saw how wide he was and went for it. I was up in my climber at 10:30 and saw nothing all day till he stepped out. He was feeding on some radishes and rye on a new no till plot I planted this year (ph was 4.3). He came from a extremely thick briar patch and he went right back to his bed to die which was only 40 yards away. Easy track job couldn't have been a better hunt. One sit one kill. Getting him into my wifes suv was a different story. He was shot in between the two shady patches in the last picture. For me he is a trophy for sure. 5H Oneida County

  2. This summer I pulled my 308 R700 VTR apart and sent it out for Cerakote, but haven’t put it back together yet, as I havent found just the right stock for it. I decided I would use my 6.5 Grendel for deer season this year. It should be great to carry, even with the scope it’s super light weight and pretty compact. I’m waiting for the Hornaday 132gr SSTs to come in so I can get it dialed in.

  3. Last month, my father in law was selling some gun raffles for the pleasantdale rod and gun club, and for 25 bucks I said ahh what the hell, I'll take one, forgot all about it. This morning I got a call saying I had won a marlin 45-70! It looks like a really sweet gun, cant wait to get my hands on it!

  4. 9/29/19 #1 I received a call from a hunter I know, and told me he had shot a doe on the public land across the road from me. Kunox and I headed over in the ranger, leaving a clearly upset Luna watching out the window. We started at the hit site and headed into the woods from the small clearing. This was an easy track with sporadic blood with some bubbles. We were 300 yards into it when Kunox went hot. We never saw the deer, but continued for another 70 yards hoping to catch up with her, before marking last blood and backing out. We agreed to come back at 9:00. Once again, Luna thought the world is not a fair place as she got left behind. We hiked in and started Kunox on the second to last ribbon and we were off. 40 yards later and he was chewing on her leg. Field dressing revealed she had been hit high in one lung. #2 I headed out at 10:00 on a second track that I probably should have declined due to the description of a high back hit, but decided to give it a shot. Luna was more than a little excited when I opened the door and she got the call. There was very little blood to start with, then none at all for most of the track. Luna took us to the hunters point of loss, then spent 15 minutes or so circling, trying to get past the grid searched area. She eventually started pulling hard and took off, showing me she was clearly on it. 1/2 a mile later we pulled the plug. Part of the satisfaction of doing this is giving the hunter some piece of mind that he didn’t leave a dead deer in the woods. He expressed his gratitude for that.

  7. Day 1, rained all day but we saw lots of sign then had a cow call to us from about 30 yards in the woods but it was so thick we couldn't even see her. sure did get the blood pumping though. Day 2 we saw a huge cow right at first light so my guide told me to get ready in case she had a bull with her. well I look through the scope and can't see a thing. it fogged up on the inside. I started to panic but the cow was alone. went back to camp and the guide let me use his rifle. 30-06 browning semi auto. he happened to be bear hunting the week before so he had it with him. went back out that afternoon and stumbled on a small bull about 40 yards away. was incredible just being in the presence of such an animal. Day 3, lots of sign again but didn't see or hear a thing. by this point we all put in a lot of miles but no one from camp got one yet. Day 4, morning was the same. didn't hear or see a thing. all the guides are thinking the rut just hasn't really kicked in yet so we change up our strategy for the afternoon. we sat in an open clear cut and wait to see if one comes cruising through. I'm sitting on a stump and my guide is on the ground. about 3:45pm I start smacking him in the arm saying "Big Bull, Big Bull!!!". he just walked right across us about 300 yards away not stopping once. so my guide starts grunting and racking and for a minute or two I thought he was gone. but then I hear the bull grunting and racking back. for about 15 - 20 minutes we go back and forth with him. couldn't see him but we would hear him come a little closer than get a little further. he goes silent for a minute or two then we hear him breaking branches as he circles around us to get down wind. before my guide even finishes saying "he's gonna come out right there" he was there. perfect broadside at 60 yards. first shot was a little far back but he turned away and looked back towards us and my second shot hit him through the bottom lip and nose. he runs about 20 yards and starts getting wobbly. hit him with a perfect third shot and he goes right down. unbelievable adrenaline rush!!! another guide and a helper come to help us quarter and pack it out. couldn't get it weighed but they all assumed it was over 700, probably closer to 800. 41 inch spread with nice paddles and symmetrical fronts. couldn't be happier with him!!! I spent the next 2 days going out with the guide and helping the other hunters from camp. I helped cut up and haul out another 40 inch bull for a client the next day. that same day another client who was hunting a different unit dropped a 52 incher. was an amazing experience!!! can't thank OMM outfitters enough!!! Hunt of a lifetime!!!

  10. Don't get on here much lately. I think the last time I was on was in July. Cam business is doing well, but the summer cam season has been slow bucks-wise. I'm sure they'll be around come rut. Good luck this fall everyone.

  13. Duck prosciutto Made this instead of the pork prosciutto only because it took 6-8 months for the pork and only two weeks for the duck. It’s a little salty but not bad. The traditional way to eat it is with tomato and basil but I forgot the basil. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  16. I’ve been hunting the local flora and fauna here. I’ve been successful with Vitis vinifera. A great local variety is here and easily hunted. I’ve also been hunting for Italionisis princessis. Unfortunately this has been a bit trickier to hunt and I’ve been unsuccessful so far. However I have good hunting skills and look forward to future success.

  23. So as we move into the opening week of bow I set my sights on the second week. My brothers son in law is a trooper and he has off that week. He will be bringing up a Suffolk county cop to see if they can shoot straight! lol I'm coming up Friday morning and going to spend the whole week at the cabin. This is the first time I'll ever spend so much time early season. Beans are everywhere and I hope to get a shot at one of the big boys still on the summer pattern. Because it is so early I'm going to really document here the conditions of the hunt every day. Good luck brothers and sisters!

  24. Looking for fresh road kill deer.. best attractant and free you can get ,the tarsal off the rear legs. If not bloodied up.can get 2 or 3 hunts out of one depending on how hot it is . I use one and freeze one. As long as it's from over a mile.from your hunting area it works!! Doenst matter if doe or buck all deer come to see who is new deer in the area. Bonus If doe in heat. Can be a bummer if it's big buck will scare You can also get them from a friend who is lucky early.if they hunt different area, try them gloves and a zip tie thru to hang 2 to 3 ft off ground up wind from your stand.. you won't be disappointed

  27. I was in the market for a new muzzleloader this past spring. After a lot of reading, I decided to get the CVA Optima V2. There is a wealth of info on this forum https://www.modernmuzzleloader.com/#muzzleloading-firearms-and-optics.52 . Everyone was raving about the Blackhorn 209 with the BH 209 breechplug, so I went with that. I'm shooting 290gr Barnes Expander Spit-Fire T-EZ. I topped it off with a Nikon Prostaff P3 with BDC reticle. I am thrilled with the accuracy!

  29. Usually after the first hard frost, is when they will start hitting the plots harder. As stuff like like turnips, beets and such will be more tasty to them, after a hard freeze, with a higher sugar content. Right now there is an abundance of natural food for them like acorns, wild apples, berries, sumac...ect. But as soon as that stuff starts to become less available, and everything starts to brown up, or even better, we get some snow. That is when they really seem to hit the food plots hard. Be patient, they will come!!

  31. As someone who love traditional old hunting rifles, loves single shot rifles, loves black powder cartridge rifles, loves traditional traditional muzzle loaders, and will do thing like drag a 50-90 Sharps through the woods, or hunt with a flintlock during the regular season.... I"m almost embarrassed by how much I enjoy hunting with the AR. The ergonomics are wonderful for it, safety and pistol grip work great with gloves, adjustable stock is a blessing with bulky hunting clothes, and I don't care how wet it gets or what I bang it into in the woods. In recent years it's become my bad weather gun, but I'm leaving it home this year as I took a deer with it last season and something else needs a chance.

  32. Good and bad... my primary hunting bow I'm in process of getting retuned. I'm still tinkering. My 3D bow serves as my backup compound hunting bow though. My first shot with it in 10 months was at a fresh deer target in the backyard. Second picture I moved back to 40 yards and shot two more arrows. Peep got a little twist in it and threw me off 2" to right. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk

  37. 9/28/19 #1 I received a call from a hunter last night telling me he had shot a doe way too far back. Based on the description of the shot, we decided to wait until first light this morning. Kunox took us to last blood, which was only 100 yards or so, then showed us another drop a few yards away. That was the last blood we’d see. I went into this track thinking it would be a quick slam dunk. I have no idea where that doe went, but we covered 2.08 miles searching for her. This really stinks because if the shot hit where the hunter thinks it did, that’s a dead deer. These are the kind of tracks that haunt me. #2 This hunter contacted me last night at about 10:00. He shot a buck and waited a couple of hours before beginning to track. He said he had heard a much louder noise than normal when the arrow struck, and he found the arrow, but the rage broadhead and 5 or 6 inches were broken off and missing. I’m thinking this deer was hit in the shoulder. The deer was tracked 250 yards to a neighboring property they didn’t have permission to enter. I was called at that point, but after waiting for an hour and still no permission, I went to bed. We had heavy rain last night, so most of the blood was gone this morning. The hunter was able to confirm that Luna was going the right way and she took us to where they lost the trail last night. We continued on and she showed us a little blood 140 yards further, but this was the last of it. We continued for a long way (my tracking app got paused in my pocket) and came back to last blood for a restart. Luna consistently took us in the same direction. Toward the end of this track she began her high pitched bark, indicating a live deer which we followed for a distance, but never saw it or any blood. I believe this buck is still alive.

  41. I have the optima v2 ,it will shoot as good as anything you're gonna come across over the counter. I always tell people to go the Blackhorn 209 route ,I don't know anybody who made the switch and wasn't glad they did. Get the Blackhorn breech plug ,100g Blackhorn 209 , 300g shockwave with a federal shot primer in that optima is a proven recipe. They sell a package that comes with a konus scope , you shouldn't have any trouble with that scope.
