  1. My daughter harvested this morning during the youth hunt! She is extremely excited ! I posted a few Picts on the harvest thread. And thanks again TreeGuy (Andrew) for lending her your go-to deer gun...a bit simpler for her than the flintlock.

  4. Cool, first gun harvest post on the thread! Carly's first deer hunt (Youth Hunt) A couple weeks ago, my daughter Carly (14 yrs old) successfully completed her hunter safety training. She has a lifetime sportsman but unfortunately, I didn’t realize that we needed to submit her certificate to NYSDEC so they could mail her tags out to us. As we would not have received them in time for the Youth Hunt (I was informed a 2 week mailing time), I had to buy replacement tags. We borrowed a Savage 220 20 gauge bolt-action from a friend a few days ago as I thought that my 12 gauge would be a bit too much for her (thanks again TreeGuy (Andrew) for lending Carly your go-to deer gun) . Carly shot the gun a couple times to get familiar with the feel of it…the gun shot great as expected, and hitting the bullseye boosted her confidence. This morning around 6:45AM we headed out in 9F behind the house to my ground blind. The forecasted rain held out for a bit and the wind direction was in our favor. Around 7:30AM (sunrise at 7:24AM), Carly spotted a deer…I was not able to see it at first and thought she was looking at a squirrel. The deer was approximately 25 yards away and starting to feed under some wild apple trees. When the deer was broadside, my daughter sent it. I saw the deer jump in the air and run out of sight. She felt she made a good shot, as earlier, we spent a lot of time discussing shot placement. After several minutes I took a quick look for blood as it was now starting to rain…no blood. After a 20 yard walk in the direction the deer ran, I found one small drop of blood and then went back to the blind where we waited for another ~20 minutes. I would have ideally liked to wait longer but the rain was starting and I wanted to find a little more blood so I had a better idea of which direction the deer ran. No more blood was found. We decided to quietly take a trail along the creek to see where/if the deer crossed the trail…nothing. We then hiked up a ravine to re-group at the blood drop we first found…my daughter found the deer piled up under some wild rose bushes…about 75 yards from where the deer was shot…there was virtually no blood from where it ran when we back-tracked! After gutting the deer and a drag (uphill) to the main trail, I was able to bring the deer up to the house on the tractor. Carly was extremely happy and I was as proud! Now time to butcher!

  5. Rookie hunter here scouted some public land in Suffolk and browsed onX and had a good idea where I think they’d be....saw a group of 3 does while scouting and used the same area to hunt around a month later. bought a summit climbing tree stand very recently and got up in a random safe tree by 7 am...group of 4-5 does rolled in and I got a nice chance to get one within 20 yards...on one side I went through his ribs and the other side i don’t know how to describe...kind of thought it was a gut shot but all that was comming out of that wound was a little swelling “bubble” type that wasn’t leaking much blood...which I’m curious if anyone has an idea what happened there.... Heard the doe drop within 20- 30 seconds about 10-15 yards away from where it was shot so I’m happy in that sense. So I took up hunting solo so I was a lot of emotions when I approached the downed deer and things got real, real quick in my surreal state of now having to face quartering the deer up. I’ve been researching hunting and watching quartering videos and trying to prepare but here was the test... I didn’t like dragging the deer by the legs, it really wierded me out so I tied it up and dragged it with a rope to my tree and started cutting....got over the grossness real fast after the first couple cuts...got the guts out and then strung it up and started quartering. i know I’m gonna get a lot of crap for how much neck meat and I’m sure a lot of other meat along the spine I might have left....but for my first time really bow hunting deer and killing my first deer within a couple hours; tree stand was up just before 7 and the doe was shot about 8:15.- I’m proud I got it done and brought meat home to my family and succeeded in hunting by my own learning, research, and practice..and of course that nice tree stand I just bought which absolutely made the difference....My big day out away from it all was over by 11am and I was home by noon with the kids pulling on my leg But you couldn’t take the smile off my face eating that over cooked backstrap with some beers. Im very happy with the result but im disappointed how much I underestimated caring for the meat afterward....a experienced deer butcher would probably laugh but cry at how much I left and how bad I did...when I got it home I broke the meat down to the small pieces before going in the fridge to “dry age”. In retrospect I think I should have kept the quarters together in big pieces and put that in the fridge rather then me breaking it down....I’m on day 5 and now seeing the pieces harden on the outside and how much I have to cut away from each individual piece leaves me feeling wasteful and that I didn’t do enough to maximize my meat harvest....I have much to learn and hope this is just the first of many more to come! Thanks for reading and appreciate all the comments in advance! Only took 2 bad pics and didn’t have any urge for a selfie.

They are leading at half time 34 to 0.. He's playing like he's possessed ! A sack and a bunch of tackles on D. And opening huge holes for the backs on O. But.....if there is no practice, he will be taking a cheerleader to fright fest! What??? C'mon man! LOL !!!! Hey I get it. I was a young buck once too.

  15. Was a great morning (10/10)...weather was crisp and very little wind. Decided to hunt before heading into work and if i got lucky i could always take the day off or head in late. Got in stand quiet and immediatlely heard deer moving around in the thick stuff to the north. All the movement shut down as the sun came up and birds and squirels started to make noise, i figured deer had been feeding all night and were headed back to bedding area before light. Around 7:35 i see a small doe coming thru the woods to my south working her way to the bedding area north of me. She got to 20 yards and was hung up for 15 minutes. She was nervous and something was not right for her to continue...I knew she couldnt smell me as wind was perfect for the direction she came from. She finally turned and took a couple big bounds back from where she came from. I figured another deer was in the thick stuff but i couldnt see anything and thought my morning was done. 3 minutes later i see movement in front of me and right away i see the antlers and tell myself its one of the shooters we have seen. I watch as the buck comes directly towards me head down and smelling the ground. He gets to 25 years and stops behind trees puts his head back and is licking the air, again i know wind is perfect so i wait till he puts his head down and just flicks his tail, i go to full draw as he steps out from trees and slight quarter to me, put my pin on his shoulder and touch release....i see blood instantly as he takes off, i can see him stop and i lose sight of him 30 yards from the stand. I make all my calls to let people know im gonna be late (and i need to settle back down as the aderenline was pumping)...i get down and go to where i shot him find blood right away. Its amazing how you watch and replay the shot and deer running marking every tree and bush from the stand but as soon as your on the ground it all changes! I follow blood for about 20 yards and there he is lying right where i lost him, double lung and one of the easiest track jobs ever. This buck was in FULL rut, his tarsel glands are black as can be, big neck and he had the definite smell of a buck in rut...makes sense now why that doe would not commit to heading to the bedding area, she was not ready for this guy to be around her. Good luck everyone, don't overthink the "rut calendar" or moon phases and when the "best" time to be in the woods is! The best time to be in the woods is anytime you can!!

  17. First sit in the new plot stand!! Looks like my mock scrape has had some action so I can't wait to check the cam later. Plot looks good yet heavily browsed at the same time if that makes any sense. Not feeling well so it's gonna take a big deer to get me going. This was the stand I fell from moving it to this tree, so I hope it brings me better luck.

A medium sized owl swooped down and grabbed one right off a log, about 30 yards away. Also heard my first rifle shot in distance / youth hunt . Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  24. 10/11/19 #1 Kunox and I tracked a doe this morning that was shot last evening. The hunter was on the ground and said the deer was perfectly broadside. He felt that he had made a good shot, but had lost the blood after about 150 yards. It appears that coyotes were pushing this deer. The hunter states they were howling close last night, plus Kunox immediately started marking everything in sight for the first 300 yards or so. He needed quite a few restarts on this track, but showed us sporadic blood for over a mile. After 2.52 miles we called the track. #2 Luna and I went to a second track at noon. The hunter had shot a doe from a ground blind and felt good about the shot. He had recovered his arrow after the pass through and the sign on it looked good. He and a friend had grid searched about a hundred yards, but had been unable to find any blood. Luna started at the hit site, and 30 yards in showed me some blood. She made short work of this 193 yard track. The doe had been quartering toward the hunter and was hit in 1 lung, liver, and intestines.

  25. Work day on the land . Stuff I just hadn’t got to , really happy with results . Opened up behind a stand that allows a gun shot into a wide mowed trail . Raked my main path and two spurs that lead to three stands , I’ll leaf blow it when they drop ,today was to get the sticks . Best thing I’ve ever done there, walk in and out in silence, deer follow it and cross it ,leaving prints that tell a story , newbies can find stands without me . Trimmed more along soy bean field, opened up trail to stand id never find in the dark . Nice surprise, land owner who had mowed for me already ,plowed through a thicket opening up to an area where the big guys bed ,and was impossible to get near before .

  32. Nothin to bring home. First set, 5 minutes into calling, a house just down the road with a bunch of young people start up a bonfire. Every time my buddy makes a call they start making animal sounds... managed to call in a dinky red fox pup, sooo cute. He was about 6ft from my buddy. Next set, setup in a large field, 10 minutes into calling we have a few yotes sound off pretty far away. We move to were we would see them if they come in. Get them to respond 1 more time but they are headed away from us. Last set, 10 mins in buddy has eyes 200 yards out, but hes watching down a narrow strip of mowed grass border by tall grass. The eyes move from one side of the tall grass to the other, occasionally peeking out. They never come in. 20 minutes into that set i have eyes running in, get on the gun and its a red fox, a no go, season not opened yet. He stuck around awhile and provided entertainment. Good first night out.

  35. Phone was dead earlier but I had a nice afternoon sit. Didn’t see any bucks but had a lot of does come out. Weather was beautiful and made for a nice relaxing sit. On a side note. Anyone get the urge to call out a local guy on FB for killing a high fence deer and trying to play it off like it’s a fair chase kill? This dude is a local wanna be hot shot Mikey Waddell wanna be. I’m fighting the urge to embarrass the hell out of him.

  36. Congratulations! Ya done real good! And did the best you could with the meat. Though she looks pretty clean in the picture. Each deer will get easier, and you will learn more from each one as well. You should be proud of yourself! Way to go!

  37. Hey,if you dont have anyone who learn from directly it is gonna take a bit to figure out what works for you.. You got a nice clean kill, that is one of the most important things. You will get better at the meat processing part, ask around on the forum and if you have a chance to talk to other hunters. I was clueless but lucky enough to have a friend that is a lifelong hunter show me just about everything..He even gutted the first deer for me. You are well on your way to becoming very self reliant in this hunting thing.

  41. I took a series of wrong turns this evening and driving down this pathway that had no business being called a road, I came up on a field with two deer in it. Check out the jpeg. Not sure what they are. Incidentally I came across a hunting store. Literally walking down the street looking for food. They did not sell 7m 08 ammo and looked confused when I asked. Lots of 308 and 30-06. I tried to impress the guy telling him I owned a benelli sbe3. He said that gun was not so popular. So much for that idea. I also asked for a copy of the seasons and regs.

  43. So youth hunt this coming weekend , my 2 youngest nephews are eligible this year, the older isnt able to hunt sat as hes working his job at local tea shop. So the youngest is up 1st. This kid has no qualms about recoil unlike his brother. So I'll prolly get him set up on my largest field. His brother will be down for sun mon. Hes recoil shy so will be using a 357 lever rifle, shots will have to be short so he will prolly be in bow stand turkeyfeathers took his doe out of. Hope they can both get a deer this weekend, they aren't buck hungry and will take a doe so chances are pretty good. Here's hoping!!!
