  1. My buddy called me at about 530 for help dragging this guy out. He was behind some doe's and reacted to a grunt call. Deer was shot in Orange County, and the coyote were on him an hour later. I believe we pushed the coyote off him just in time to salvage all the meat. We found two fresh rubs from today on the track job.

  2. Surgeons pleased with progress. Still has thing attached to brain monitoring it , desperately wants ice chips but cannot have due to fear of lung aspiration, did move his left leg a smidge , sat in chair for 10 minutes, breathing and oxygen need improvement. These are all moving in the right direction and better than had he not had the surgery. We’re being cautiously optimistic. It’s hard to hear he’s said he’d rather die than this. Thank you for all your prayers and thoughts.

  3. I haven’t been out yet. Been busy getting caught up on things and waiting for the right time. A friend of mine got this pic yesterday on his cam of a good buck starting to chase. It wasn’t all out, but it’s a start. We’re starting to get to that time where the unexpected can happen at any time. I’m sure as the moon goes away this week, we can expect action to continue to increase. I’ll be out this weekend finally.

  4. Im goin to post my year of varmint hunting here instead of multiple posts. Took my son behind the house this evening. First time for him coming out with me for yotes. About 20 mins in i was doin some rabbit distress on a mouth call, spotted eyes coming in. Red fox, got to watch him for awhile. He was figuring somethimg was off and started to head away, i hit the foxpro and a fox distress call. He came back out and sat down looking out towards the call. Just then yotes sounded off across the street in a corn field. Unfortunately they never came across the street. Good night for his first sit.

  6. Few years back my niece got married on the day before opening day and her and her husband drove to the cabin that night. We had the 1 bedroom all set up for them....no details. lol That was a first! Now a few years later they will be coming up with their daughter all of 4 months old! Gioia the mom loves to hunt and has 1 doe and 1 buck to her credit! Eric the dad shot the 5 point at bow season so he gets first duty with Avery opening morning. We were all wondering who was going to get opening morning with Avery. My brother the granddad was going to do it if no deer was taken at bow. Gioia is a Real-estate broker and Eric a State Trooper. They are such wonderful people I just love that there will be a real little one at the cabin this opening day. It really throws the old image of deer camp out the window! BTW my camp is located on Avery road the little ones name is Avery Rose. That is Gioia and Avery fishing the south shore of LI today with my brother!

  8. Just seems to me, that when things get as regimentated as this guy is, you lose the fun of hunting. I don't care if I'm hunting 150 class deer. If I'm not having fun, it means nothing to me. That guys method doesn't look fun. But hey, whatever floats your boat!

  14. I didn't want to hijack Dirtimes thread so I will start my own. First I welcome any input, suggestions or corcerns pertaining to this hunt. I grew up as a kid in Alaska as a young child hunting bear and caribou, when I hunted NY as a teenager I always missed hunting big woods. I'm 34 now and a year ago my buddy and I decided we wanted to rough it and do a 4 or 5 day deep woods hunt staying in a state lean to or tent. He is active duty in Georgia and I'm a busy bee with work so we knew we would be going in with no actual scouting except for maps and reading whatever we could about the area. We have both done this before but not in coldish weather (30s at night 40-50 during days). We have been on top of everything we could but I definitely have that good nervous feeling now that we are eleven days away. We understand low deer population and a low chance of success but to be honest it is the experience we are both looking forward to. Of course we are looking at freezing rain (firewood will be a challenge) the entire hunt as of todays forcast, so rain gear will add some extra weight in our packs. Anyways I won't have service during the hunt but I will post pictures of our campsite and hopefully a harvest of a mature buck or bear. He has a marsh filled with pines in mind and I will be targeting a saddle about 300 feet in elevation above him. Of course we will follow sign but we do have an original plan. Of course life always throws you a curve and my wife and I bought a house and will be moving in right after the hunt so I will have a busy few weeks.

  15. Hey guys this is my first attempt at self filming an entire hunt ending in a harvest. I'm starting up a hunting channel where I hunt solely in upstate New York. Almost all of my hunting is on heavily pressured public land. I stay mobile and use a lone wolf climbing stand or hang on and sticks. Let me know what you guys think about the video. Lots more to come and they will get better as I go. Thanks!

  20. As you can see, I started with a basic Hornaday kit, that I bought from a forum member. Then built around it. It seems to fit my needs, and I can interchange with Lee and other dies just fine. I could have bought cases of factory ammo for what I have invested in handloading. But the enjoyment I have gotten so far researching, working, testing, and hopefully killing a deer with a round of my own making, is worth every penny invested! And the little bit of added accuracy isn't bad either!

  23. We had tons of them where I grew up (SE PA). Sadly, they are all gone now, unless you want to hunt stocked birds. My father always had a dog of some kind or another, a bird dog or beagle. Some days were better than others, but most Saturdays in the fall we'd come home with something (woodcock, pheasants, rabbits, squirrels). But those days are just past history now. We hunted with cheap double barrels he'd buy at an estate or yard sale, most were "skeet" or "cylinder" choked, until he splurged & bought himself an 1100. When we DID hunt without a dog, it seemed like nothing would flush until we got to the end of the field, then multiple birds would flush at the tail end of the field, usually headed toward the woods. Memories..... Your gun, your license, your hunt...use what makes you happy as long as it's ethical & legal.

  24. Guys used to steam their buddies stamps off and apply to their old license ,that was good enough to get in the system as a bow hunter. Way back when they still used paper and stamps.

  27. Last night I spent some time at the bench to get our hunting ammo done. 270, Nosler BT 140g and some 140g Silvertips. We are good to go. This recipe shot very well on the range tests. This year, for the very first time, a buck will fall from a bullet I made up. Been waiting for this for quite awhile! All the time, and effort, put into this reloading stuff has been worth it. I really enjoy the tedious aspect, and being precise.

  28. My Dad killed a bunch of pheasants years ago. He never used a dog. He just walked through the high grass until one flushed and then shot em.

  29. Well today was my 8th sit of the year and the first deer I've seen, unbelievably. After a quick stand move yesterday in the pouring rain I climbed in this morning, at 7:40 2 does came out at 5 yds and the biggest gave me a 21yd quartering away shot. Entrance was behind the last rib, exit was low behind off shoulder. At the arrow there were intestines laying on the ground, not terribly alarming as I knew the angle and could see the exit as she ran. Waited 3 hours just to be safe, she was laying right where I last saw her. Spitfire Maxx heads are nasty! 2 minutes after I shot her my other cell cam 250yds away sent me the pic of a nice 8 walking by my other spot! Feels good to have one on the ground. 32. I used to be quite annoyed when on public land hunting behind my dog when random people would “follow” us in hopes of shooting a bird he put up. I know its their right but sneaking around the next hedge row is quite dangerous or having a shot ring out from the other side of the hedgerow is quite unsettling. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  33. Please don't shoot my bucks. I know you would only use their antlers as toothpicks. I, on the other hand, would at least display them for the next 100 years

  35. That would simply be the old six oclock hold, as is used properly with all open sights. And the focus on the front sight again, very basic marksmanship. A shotgun (if used as a shotgun, not a slug gun) is pointed. not aimed.

  39. I've been a Panthers fan since day one. My take is Cam is not the same player he once was. Always respected his physical style of play. But always disliked his arrogance and moodiness. He had one great season in 2015, and has gone downhill steadily since. And lost a SB they should have won! He has never been, or ever will be the pocket QB he needs to be, to prolong his career in the NFL. Use Cam for trade bait. Some teams will surely bite! The Panthers will get much more towards their future, by dealing him than keeping him. Kyle Allen may not be the future franchise QB for Carolina, but he's doing a better job than Cam can right now.

  40. That is all I could find to put on that shotgun that was fiber optic at first I was a little skeptical like you but after seeing the positive reviews I decided to get one after using it I found no down side to it . Of course everyone's eyes are a little different you may not like it for all I know its the type of thing you have to try out to know for sure I guess that is all I can tell you.

  41. Reading one of these with my coffee and cider donuts in the morning is a warm and fuzzy way to start my day. Willing to be that is a huge difference for a youth and them being a lifelong hunter :. Finding their first deer vs searching for hours only for heartbreak. So thank you for doing this Tom, especially for kids.

  43. Was a great morning (10/10)...weather was crisp and very little wind. Decided to hunt before heading into work and if i got lucky i could always take the day off or head in late. Got in stand quiet and immediatlely heard deer moving around in the thick stuff to the north. All the movement shut down as the sun came up and birds and squirels started to make noise, i figured deer had been feeding all night and were headed back to bedding area before light. Around 7:35 i see a small doe coming thru the woods to my south working her way to the bedding area north of me. She got to 20 yards and was hung up for 15 minutes. She was nervous and something was not right for her to continue...I knew she couldnt smell me as wind was perfect for the direction she came from. She finally turned and took a couple big bounds back from where she came from. I figured another deer was in the thick stuff but i couldnt see anything and thought my morning was done. 3 minutes later i see movement in front of me and right away i see the antlers and tell myself its one of the shooters we have seen. I watch as the buck comes directly towards me head down and smelling the ground. He gets to 25 years and stops behind trees puts his head back and is licking the air, again i know wind is perfect so i wait till he puts his head down and just flicks his tail, i go to full draw as he steps out from trees and slight quarter to me, put my pin on his shoulder and touch release....i see blood instantly as he takes off, i can see him stop and i lose sight of him 30 yards from the stand. I make all my calls to let people know im gonna be late (and i need to settle back down as the aderenline was pumping)...i get down and go to where i shot him find blood right away. Its amazing how you watch and replay the shot and deer running marking every tree and bush from the stand but as soon as your on the ground it all changes! I follow blood for about 20 yards and there he is lying right where i lost him, double lung and one of the easiest track jobs ever. This buck was in FULL rut, his tarsel glands are black as can be, big neck and he had the definite smell of a buck in rut...makes sense now why that doe would not commit to heading to the bedding area, she was not ready for this guy to be around her. Good luck everyone, don't overthink the "rut calendar" or moon phases and when the "best" time to be in the woods is! The best time to be in the woods is anytime you can!!
