  1. TOOK MY 7 YEAR OLD OUT WITH ME SATURDAY AFTERNOON. WE HAD A BLAST. HE WAS SO EXCITED WHEN WE WOULD SEE A DEER. THEN THIS BUCK CAME OUT THAT I NORMALLY WOULD LET GO. THIS WAS DIFFERENT. THIS WAS ACTUALLY MY FIRST KILL WITH A BOW AND WITH MY 7 YEAR OLD THERE, IT WAS THE BEST HUNT I EVER HAD!!!!

  2. Took this doe Friday evening at about 17:55. She was in a group of six that milled around for two hours around me. I was surprised no bucks were anywhere near in that time. Legal time was ending and took a ten yard chip shot. She piled up 40 yards away. My brother and dad were there to help me out and that was the best part.

  3. Let's see if I can get this out coherently. Left the house at 430. Saw Lots of deer along the park way as usual. Parked around 530 and started the mile hike in. 40 degrees and wind from the West. Crossbow over my shoulder and carrying an old climber. About halfway in I saw a flashlight in the distance. Trespasser. Got to my tree around 6 and realize the tree I had planned to use was to big for the climber. In the dark I found another one but it had a limb about 8 feet up. The climber was surprisingly quiet for being so old. Right around 645 I had 3 or 4 doe come running in to my left. About 50yds out they turn into the woods and onto another property. While getting ready for the shot I notice that the cables are too long and so the platform is tipping forward. At that time, maybe 7 o'clock I notice another doe to my right. At about 60yds she also turned into the woods. I could see a few of them still smiling around behind me. Around 715 I saw a deer feeding in the acorns to my left, 100yds and closing. Buck. He came to shoot 35 yds and was broadside. I took the shot but misjudged the distance. Clean miss. After a free minutes of debating i climb down to recover the arrow. Found it covered in mud. Went back to the climber and found a better tree. Adjusted the cable length and climbed to about 10 ft. Felt better about the new tree but when I tried to host the crossbow, it was stuck. I had to climb back down to free it. Did that and then climbed back up. I figure my day might be shot because of all my commotion. I finally get back up in the tree, turn around and see another Buck marching through the beans straight to me at about 100yds and closing fast. I quickly raise my crossbow and load a bolt. The Buck presented a 12 yd broadside chip shot. He went about 50 yds and laid right down. First time using a climber and first deer with a crossbow. First Buck in 10 yrs. He isn't the biggest, but he'll be good eating. I learned a lot on this hunt and now the pressure is off.

  4. Got in my stand Saturday morning at 7:45.Sat there all day and didn't see one deer and was wondering why .Then at 6pm a pack of coyotes started howling and yipping about a 100 yds from me.Then another pack started carrying on between my stand and where I park my truck.I thought I better get out of here while it's still daylight.Went back Sunday am and was on stand before daylight.Again the coyotes were howling everywhere and again no deer to be seen all day which was very discouraging. I had over 100 pics of deer from my 2 trail cameras back in early Oct.Several does , a couple of small bucks and a beautiful 10 point but now I can't even find a track of a deer.Anyways I got on stand this morning and just as it was getting light enough to see I thought I would try rattling .So I rattled for a couple of minutes and after a couple minutes I heard something coming.I thought all right about time I see a deer! But it wasn't a deer it was a coyote and it came within 15yds but it didn't give me enough time for a shot.So I continued to sit in the stand and 2 hrs later I heard something walking behind me .I looked and it was another dang coyote.I watched him for a few minutes and he gave me broadside shot at 35 yds .I didn't know that I hit him until I climbed down and went over where he was. There was blood everywhere, so I started following the blood trail and couldn't believe how far he ran before he expired. At least a hundred yds and I hit him right behind the shoulder.

  7. Fun hunt. Started real slow and around 9:30 a doe comes screaming by about 50yds away with a buck hot on her. A minute later she comes screaming by again back in opposite direction and runs under another of my stands. Buck looked better second time by. Jump out of my stand and hustle to the other stand she ran by hoping her scent might start a parade. As soon as I climb in and remove pack, I turn to see this guy 45yds away. Have no idea if he was the one chasing or was standing there when I climbed in but he had to be close since I had not even turned around. Slowly nock an arrow and he starts heading to me. Trying to decide if he is worth shooting and he looks right at me at about 25yds. I have never seen such a bug eyed oh crap look. He veers away and takes about three hops and starts swinging to my left. At that point I am in it due to the excitement that and draw and he stopped just long enough for me to settle a pin and question how far, how far. Not really sure but looked more than 20 so 30 it was. Shot and he dropped in his tracks. Took top of ribs, through spine and caught a good amount of lung. Those rages do damage. Turns out he was 25yds when ranged after the fact. If he hadn’t went all bug eyed, not sure an arrow would have flown but he made it pretty exciting and that’s what I love when hunting.

  12. Had a great hunt yesterday! Saturday morning, I decided to hunt a rut travel spot with my compound at the lake property. Saw zero deer. In the afternoon went to the farm property, in another rut pinch point and saw zero deer. Figured in this area, the majority of doe were not ready, but the bucks are ready to go! Figured I'd go where the doe were feeding, to perhaps catch a buck lurking nearby? So decided to hunt an oak ridge Sunday morning with crossbow and if need be with the compound in the afternoon. (I like to alternate between the two) Got in nice and quiet, to a natural ground blind, built on a bench about three quarters of the way up the ridge. Not long after first light I see a buck below me making his way up! Just cruising, he came to within a few yards, but was just a six point year old buck, so let him go. A short time after he went by, I saw another year old buck coming down from above. He also got a pass at 10 yards or so. So now I'm thinking I made the right setup choice! Cool! At 6:30 I hear the shuffling of leaves behind me (my buck making a scrape) but glancing over my left shoulder, didn't see anything (he was on the lip of the bench, had I looked over my right shoulder I'd have seen him) But just thought it was one of the many squirrels running around. A couple minutes later, I again heard leaves crunching and CLOSE! Glancing to the left at probably five FEET, was a buck! He immediately stopped as he caught my scent, stomped a couple of times, blew and took a couple short leaps behind me. I slowly turned, and saw him staring at me and doing the head bob at twenty yards. I decided I wanted him! Not the best buck on the property, but he looked awesome to me at the moment! So I got the crossbow up to my shoulder, slowly turned 180 degrees around the tree, and he just stood there! I found him immediately in the scope, lined up the shot, and squeezed the trigger, seeing the lighted nock disappear right where I aimed!!! He ran up the ridge and as he got to the pines, I thought I saw him stagger. That's where I found him later 50 yards or so away. Giving him a while before going to look, two doe show up and start gorging on acorns!! They kept me entertained for over an hour as I waited. Coming within 10 yards many times! All in all it was just a perfect morning hunt! I'm very happy to have this buck! A solid two year old for this area. Got a hunting memory I'll always remember. And some tasty meat in the freezer. Now I will concentrate on possibly shooting a doe for some elderly folks I know. And then looking for at least a three year old buck during gun season. Also I was texting with moog during all this. Sharing my hunt with him, as he has shared so much with me. With hunting memories of WNY. Also heard an owl sounding off as I was going in. And thought immediately of turkeyfeathers and his brother Lee. I gave me a good warm feeling, and I just knew it was going to be a great morning! Sorry for the long post.

  13. My computer is giving me trouble or this would be a much longer story. Story is long and ugly as late night gutting and dragging is way over rated......... Shot him around 4pm and the hit looked good. Turned out it was liver hit and took longer to die. I recovered him around 9:20pm and got him in the barn at 10:15pm. (I took the pics this morning)

If so I’ll buy one . 17 yard shot a bit more forward then ideal, yet a pass trough ,including the heart . Short “ tract “ hard drag .

  17. This 2.5 year old 8-point may have been my easiest shot with my Barnett Recruit, since 2014, but it was the scariest recovery. For the first time, I did not hear a crash within 40 yards or see him go down. Chest girth was only 39-1/4" and I still have not calculated the dressed weight, from the PA chart (with the 9F NY correction factor applied), but definitely my highest scoring crossbow rack and the first in a long time with no "rut" damage. I passed up a 1.5 year 3 point at 8:00 am. This one followed the same path, but hung up 50 yards out and stared at me without even a twitch for almost 1/2 hour. Finally he started moving closer and I moved my crossbow into position in "super slow motion" When he entered the view in my "green dot" Barnett sight, I put the center dot on the spot and sent the bolt. It looked good but I waited a half hour to pursue. I thought I heard a "crash" in the nearby thicket. I said my usaual prayer for an easy recovery before getting down. I followed good blood, to the point I last saw him, where it appeared that he turned and entered the thicket, but the blood petered out at that point. I then did a 1/2 hour grid search of the thicket with no success. I had marked last blood with surveyors ribbon and I went back to it. I pulled the little red Bible out of my pack, opened it to a random verse in the book of John, said a quick prayer, and started looking for more blood. It turned out that he did not enter that thicket where I heard noise after he disappeared. There must have been other deer in there (maybe his little brother had circled back in there). I found blood leading across a field, and continued to mark it with bits of orange ribbon. He was headed towards another, larger thicket. I looked up, and there he laid, belly up, just about 5 yards into that one. My uncle lives next door. He is my God-father and is recovering from some recent surgery. I gave him one of the tenderloins and just finished up the other one for lunch. It looks like a good week to hang the carcass in our insulated garage.

  18. I'd say the high horse is actually a concern about starting young hunters on the right path. I'd venture to say that TF has passed on and will pass on opportunities that are marginal, and he's as young a bowhunter as the kids shooting trailing bucks. Chris, if you were mentoring a young hunter, would you really have him send a second arrow on that deer ? Stop making it out to be any more than a concern about mentoring the young hunters and trying to set them up for success today and in the future. It's apparent who's on the high horse. 21. My first morning of a 20 day vacation, had a Spike and 6 come by, an hour later I hear grunts close by in the bedding area, I grunt back, nothing. About an hour later I hear a weird noise and a stick break in the same spot. I stand up and grab my bow just in case. Out comes the biggest buck we have on camera. He's at 35 so I adjust my sight and he turns and comes on the sidehill above me at 25 yds. No time to adjust the sight so I held low and put it behind the shoulder and I didn't dare to try to stop him So I shoot. It hits him a bit back, he runs 30 yds, stops, looking around, then panics and runs 50yds to the top of the hill and stands, wagging his tail fast. I slip out quiet and gave him 6 hours. We slipped back in and took up the trail before dark, pretty steady blood for about 75 yds then we see 2 bloody beds about 4' apart. While I glance up I see him 5 yds away but his head looks up. We watch him for a few seconds and I see his antlers move. I kneel down and put one in his lungs and he rolled onto his back and died. My best buck to date! 190# dressed. 11 points. 24. Started my morning off at Gman’s by getting up at 3:45 to make the drive down. Heard the whooooo of an owl again. At about 9 I was ready to pack it in. Ok I’ll hang out til 11. At 10:30 I had a really nice 8 with good mass in an opening of the woods at 40, too far for my comfort. He’s now descending hill at 30 but tree tree tree and more trees about 6-8” across. Was not going to try and thread the needle. Off he goes. Grunted and no response. Hind sight I should have snort wheezed at him. Departed for home and quickly had some leftover Chinese food from last night. Boots back on and went local. Used the climber and climbed up along an old logging road near a little ridge and tiny stream. It felt deery once I got up. Perfect wind from the SSW. Not long after I hear footsteps and peer over to my right. Here he comes at about 25 yards hard quartering to. I contemplate do I let him walk ? Grab the bow off the holder and quickly snap on the release to the D loop. He’s now broadside and walking in , I wait til he quarters a little away , settle my 20 yard pin right behind the shoulder he’s giving me and vision the exit , the other shoulder . Loose grip , good anchor and don’t jerk the release. I see I hit him perfectly but the nocturnal never lights up. I watch his reaction and he bolts hard , watching him cross the tiny stream he runs all of about 65 yards . I hear him and see him crash twice. But just out of sight he goes. Climb down after a bit to look for arrow. Hmm, no arrow and woods floor blanketed in leaves .Find some hair and blood at hit sight. Then the blood gets real good , splatters on big trees , more hair. I follow until I see white belly. Shot was 17 yards . I flip him over on his bed and there’s most of arrow . Checked the entrance and spot on through the boiler room and angle says broadhead stuck in other shoulder blade. With passing 12 smallish bucks and goiter last year my first year I wasn’t going to let this one walk in hopes of getting a shot at a slammer. Might I see a big guy when I’m out for does , probably and could care less I shot this buck in honor of my brother Lee who I lost just days ago. He was so sorry when he sold the 60 acres I used to hunt and I kept reinforcing it’s ok I’ll land somewhere to hunt. He was so happy to hear this last year and this year. That owl I heard this morning was him overseeing my day. With the broadhead still in there and pouring rain about to come I opted to simply strap him on the carrier without field dressing him. I’ll pay the extra fee when I drop him off before work in the morning. No differently than I had to leave him overnight. Shot was perfect but I’m going to ask them to confirm my suspicions. Almost added a big 8 with a very swollen neck to the carrier as I had to really jam on the brakes 2 miles from home. I’m so proud of my first archery buck.

  25. Had this guy come down a ravine to my right a minute after I check the wind . As I watched my milk weed float to the left I looked over and thought oh cool nice little buck, no way he’s going to come my way. He started walking toward the trail that we walked in stopped on a dime and started heading my way. Now I’m thinking great how can I draw my bow. The only way was if he walks in front of a tree that was in my way. Well he did , I drew back he popped out 12 yards and the rest is history . So happy I can’t believe the way he came in to me. I huge thanks to @Jeremy K @ Tacks cause I cant find his handle and buddy Andrew who helped dragged out

  30. Been seeing bucks across stream where I hunt. This afternoon around 4 this buck crossed over to my side. I'm in a good blow-down natural ground blind, almost below ground level above me with a swamp and stream in front of me. A pretty area to hunt. I saw 3 bucks this morning from this stand, one real nice basket rack working out on a sapling. They didn't respond to grunt call or light rattle. This afternoon started off really slow- then later in the day this buck crossed the stream, as soon as he hit the water I was able to get crossbow ready so he couldn't see movement . He came right up the run in front of me about 18 yds away broadside. Made a mouth grunt to stop him - he only went about 5 yards from where he was shot, and expired within 30 seconds. Thank God for the short drag and nice deer.

  32. Kind of a unique buck I named Blade because of the left main beam going straight up. Came in behind me and offered me a 20 yd shot. He ran about 20 yds and crashed within sight. Of course Blade got back at me when I cut my knuckle while dressing him. 3 spikes wandered through about 20 minutes after I shot him. Gotta love November.

  34. If there were any adult with the youth and could clearly see the first deer wasn't hit very well then I hope they would restrain them from shooting again, yes. But let's not forget who we're talking about, youth's. TF can pass on whatever he likes, so can everyone else. He wasn't there to know what actually happened or what was going through the kids head. If he had killed both of those deer then everyone would be congratulating him without a word being said about shooting 2 deer. I'm on my high horse? For defending a youth and his mentor that I don't even know?? I'm saying give the kid a break. He messed up, we all have. Learn from it and move forward. Let me ask you.... You shoot a doe, shot looked alright but you just aren't sure. Minutes later the biggest buck you've ever seen comes by, do you shoot? I already know the answer and so does everyone else. So where does TF logic apply here? After all it most likely was the largest buck the kid has had an opportunity at...? Sent from my moto g(6) using Tapatalk

  37. I'm going to play devil's advocate here and bear in mind I'm not trying to derail or personally assault anyone. I would shoot 2 deer in one sit, and I have. I find it a bit asinine for you to stand on your high horse after only starting bowhunting recently yourself. Everyone makes mistakes, you too are going to lose deer in your career and does it really matter if it was a week apart or the same sit? No. I've lost a deer before I thought was dead and I've found deer I never thought I would. It's a shame there wasn't a better outcome but it's hunting. I'd be willing to bet 90% of hunters on this site would shoot a doe then shoot a trailing buck if the opportunity presented itself, without knowing the first shot was "perfect." To keep criticizing the young hunters or their elder isn't helping anything but throwing unnecessary shame. End of rant. Sent from my moto g(6) using Tapatalk

  45. 11/3/19 #1 Hunter shot the buck with a .243, 26 hours before we arrived. This was Luna’s first track since her paw injury sidelined her for almost three weeks. She quickly took us to last blood, then struggled to get us through the heavily grid searched area. I eventually took her 100 yards further to the edge of the swamp to see if she could pick up a line there, but the area was way too thick with briars, deadfalls, etc for her to even walk. I picked her up and walked the edge, heading toward an area that wasn’t as thick when I saw her nose kick into overdrive. I put her down and she led me to the dead, gutshot 8 pointer. #2 Our second track was for a buck shot late yesterday afternoon. The hunter has trailed light blood for 300 yards, then grid searched. Luna took us beyond last blood and showed a few drops a short distance away, then nothing. We searched extensively, but did not recover this buck. I hope they see it again. #3 This young hunter took a 200 yard shot at a running deer and missed. At the shot, the deer stopped and the hunter connected with his second shot. A few drops of blood were found just inside the woods, and a light grid search produced no results when the trail was lost. Kunox went to work on this one, but unfortunately we came up empty. When I questioned the hunter further, I learned his .308 was sighted in 1” high at 50 yards and he had held right on the vitals at 200. He had never practiced at that distance. #4 Another one we came up empty on. This 48 hour old track was for a buck that appeared to be hit in the leg, based on the pieces of bone found. The buck had bedded right inside the woods, but had been bumped when the hunter searched for it. They had tracked for 360 yards, then grid searched. Kunox was able to advance the track, but we never found the buck.

  46. Finally.... Last night was my first hunt in a week. Set up my stand by 4....at 430 a real nice 8 point comes to 60 yards...I grunt...he looks....and walks left away from me. I grunt again....he stops looks....continues on his way. Soon after I look up and coming down same trail is another nice 8. So I got situated. ...and set.. He walked to 30 yards and made a left towards the other buck....I drew back and released the arrow without stopping him.....I watched my lumenok disappear into the boiler room....and stick in ground behind him....he ran 25 yards and tipped over....wow....I needed that..
