First day out with crossbow , morning I saw zip. Went back out @2:00 and put out some doe pee 20 yards from my stand. This buck walked right up to it at 3:15 and stopped at the spot and sniffed it, presenting me with the ideal quartering away shot. He went about 20 yards crashed into a tree and died. 11/6/19 100th career recovery I was called by some friends tonight that were unable to find any blood from an 8 pointer one of them had shot. They had gone in about 50 yards before backing out. Luna and I headed over and were taken to a food plot and pointed in the direction the deer ran. Luna picked a trail and 80 yards later the leash went slack. I looked around a tree and Luna was chewing on the dead bucks leg. I almost felt guilty having such an easy track.

1rst time out saturday November 2nd. I couldn't bow hunt this year do to a broken wrist. Been rough. At 830 am had this 8 point come threw. Had a small window to shoot and when he walked in I shot.Waited till 9 to track. While waiting had a 5 point walk by. Had good blood but then faded. While looking for blood seen another buck chasing a doe. Watched for about 5 minutes until they were out of sight. Tracked my buck for about 3 hours when I seen him laying down looking away from me. Shot him again. He went about another 100 yards and I found him dead. First shot was a little behind and caught gut. 2nd shot was in the back looking away but lunged him

Season is winding down for me. Go on night shift next week, on call 7 days a week, and no vacation approved after 11/1. May not get much more hunting in. So, I took this spike and I'm thankful for him.

Wife got a nice 9 point about 9 am Sat. Shot was 38 yards with a CamX Chaos 325. It was only the second buck she has ever killed. It dressed out over160#. We followed a 200 yard blood trail to her prize. The extraction was a tough, uphill haul.

I had a very exciting morning. Probably my best hunt in a very long time as far as quality and quantity. I had several opportunities and finally let an arrow fly. Early this morning I let a 9 walk by at 16 yards. Not long after, he decided to walk past all 4 of my cell cams on the property. After he left there were 3 different 8’s and another 9. Took some videos and let them walk. Giving a wide 8 a pass was a really tough call. I drew on him as he was about to walk under my stand. So I let down the bow and quickly grabbed my phone for a quick video. Looking back I probably shouldn’t have done that, but I knew there was bigger. At about 12, a buck came charging out of the bedding chasing a doe right under my stand. Just got a quick look and noticed some nice brows and kickers. Turns out he was the same buck I passed on early and he’s an 11. Stopped him with a mouth bleat for an 8 yard quartering away shot. Hit him high and slightly back and it came out low right behind the shoulder. Clean pass through and he only went 40 yards. He stopped and looked around for about 2 seconds, and tipped right over. He’s not the biggest buck there, but I’m happy with him. I still have another buck tag so I’m planning on being back in there on Friday morning.

Just got back from an eastern plains CO DIY public land mule deer hunt. We applied as a group (3 hunters) for 2nd rifle mule deer bucks back in March and were fortunate to draw tags with no points. We set up camp on Friday 10/25/19, with season opening 10/26/19. First day we split up and each covered a decent amount of ground averaging about 6 miles each without any deer sightings. We tried different ground the next 3 days and saw lots of critters, just no mule deer bucks. Highlight of the trip was seeing 3 big horn rams within 150 yards of the truck. Had a nice mature whitetail half rack 8 at 100 yds on day 3 who put on a show chasing does and grunting. Weather got progressively colder. Normal would be 60s for a high and 20s for low. We hardly got above freezing from day 2, had snow day 3 and hit 0 degrees by day 4 for a low with a steady 20 knot wind. Only the first and last days were close to normal. By 10/30 we were down to 2 hunters. After talking with some locals we targeted smaller patches of public next to crop fields. And we even got permission to hunt one of the fields. On 10/30 I saw over a dozen mulies including 1 definite shooter, one 3 by 3 (maybe shooter) and a forkie. Next day we were back where I'd seen the deer and my buddy got the 4x4 we were targetting in the field we had permission to hunt. I hunted the same public ground next to the field the next 2 evenings. I stalked the 3x3 and missed an easy 150 yd shot on 11/1. On 11/2 the forkie gave me an 80 yd chip shot, which I blew by shooting high. Still can't believe I missed clean at 80 yds, but I did. By 11/3 it was down to me alone. After checking the rifle, I sat the same area and only saw a doe and fawn. I am happy to scratch the DIY muley hunt off the bucket list and had a good time in spite of the unseasonably cold weather. I had one of the coolest experiences I’ve ever had in the woods today. Not only did I see two of the biggest deer I’ve ever seen on the hoof but I damn near stepped on them! My buddy and I got permission on a 50 acre chunk of river bottom near one of our other spots and decided to take advantage of the rain to scout it. Long story short, it’s completely hammered with rubs and scrapes and just as we are getting into the final stretch of cover to scout a huge 10 pointer stands up spitting distance away from me and let out the most aggressive blow I’ve ever heard before taking off. I shoot my buddy a text telling him a shooter running towards him and an ever bigger buck comes into the bedding from a logging road and has a stare down with me at less than five yards. I had a shot opportunity at his neck but decided to pass. By how tore up the area is I think they must be spending a lot of time back here and should come back. The first deer was probably 150-160 class and the second one was a 6x6 pushing 170-180. I’m thinking one of them must have had a doe and the other was lingering close by. Regardless I’ll be putting a lot of seat time in next week on this property. We’ve had a few 150-160 class bucks over the years on our spots but I’ve never had an opportunity to hunt a true booner Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Things are better this morning. I took yesterday off. I planned to quit by 9 am this morning because of the forecast. She was hanging before that. After a tea break, I'll skin her out. She dressed at 115#. The conversion says 152 live weight.

Here is entry. They live a long time on one lung...glad I didn't push him amd with temps in the low 30s it all worked out. Buck came in kind of sneaking by me. When he got downwind he stopped for a split second ready to bolt. He was slight quartering and felt like I made a good shot considering the angle. But you just never know it happens so fast.

FYI, I was enlightened. The bucks are laying low in woodchuck holes right now. But, "When the does are ripe, the bucks will come". I feel so much less pressure now wondering WTF is going on! Thank you Mr. Jack Daniels!!!

The "giant" my buddy missed was actually a split brow 9 point that I've seen around. At 415 I laid eyes on the biggest buck ice seen while hunting. An absolute giant bumping a doe around in the corn. Awesome stuff that keeps me coming back.

Had a great hunt yesterday! Saturday morning, I decided to hunt a rut travel spot with my compound at the lake property. Saw zero deer. In the afternoon went to the farm property, in another rut pinch point and saw zero deer. Figured in this area, the majority of doe were not ready, but the bucks are ready to go! Figured I'd go where the doe were feeding, to perhaps catch a buck lurking nearby? So decided to hunt an oak ridge Sunday morning with crossbow and if need be with the compound in the afternoon. (I like to alternate between the two) Got in nice and quiet, to a natural ground blind, built on a bench about three quarters of the way up the ridge. Not long after first light I see a buck below me making his way up! Just cruising, he came to within a few yards, but was just a six point year old buck, so let him go. A short time after he went by, I saw another year old buck coming down from above. He also got a pass at 10 yards or so. So now I'm thinking I made the right setup choice! Cool! At 6:30 I hear the shuffling of leaves behind me (my buck making a scrape) but glancing over my left shoulder, didn't see anything (he was on the lip of the bench, had I looked over my right shoulder I'd have seen him) But just thought it was one of the many squirrels running around. A couple minutes later, I again heard leaves crunching and CLOSE! Glancing to the left at probably five FEET, was a buck! He immediately stopped as he caught my scent, stomped a couple of times, blew and took a couple short leaps behind me. I slowly turned, and saw him staring at me and doing the head bob at twenty yards. I decided I wanted him! Not the best buck on the property, but he looked awesome to me at the moment! So I got the crossbow up to my shoulder, slowly turned 180 degrees around the tree, and he just stood there! I found him immediately in the scope, lined up the shot, and squeezed the trigger, seeing the lighted nock disappear right where I aimed!!! He ran up the ridge and as he got to the pines, I thought I saw him stagger. That's where I found him later 50 yards or so away. Giving him a while before going to look, two doe show up and start gorging on acorns!! They kept me entertained for over an hour as I waited. Coming within 10 yards many times! All in all it was just a perfect morning hunt! I'm very happy to have this buck! A solid two year old for this area. Got a hunting memory I'll always remember. And some tasty meat in the freezer. Now I will concentrate on possibly shooting a doe for some elderly folks I know. And then looking for at least a three year old buck during gun season. Also I was texting with moog during all this. Sharing my hunt with him, as he has shared so much with me. With hunting memories of WNY. Also heard an owl sounding off as I was going in. And thought immediately of turkeyfeathers and his brother Lee. I gave me a good warm feeling, and I just knew it was going to be a great morning! Sorry for the long post.

I ended Up relocating to my blind that overlooks the hillside above the plots. No more than 10 mins after I got Situated and I catch Movement in the bottom. I could See it was a big bodied deer, but when I got My Binos up and on it, I saw It was my #1 target buck, a big mainframe 10 that I havent Gotten great pics of so far. They are always blurry, but you can make out the frame. I grinted at him and he stopped and turned my way right in one of the long gun lanes I have For this blind. It looked like he was going to come right to me, but I lost Sight of him in a thick patch and haven’t seen him since. if it was gun season he would be dead. Ugh.

Up in a stand I haven’t hunted until today. Lots of activity back here. Big rub line in front of me and a heavy travel corridor off to my left. Ran a drag on the way in and some code blue about 20 yards away. Already had a 2.5 yo 8 cruise by right after I got Here. Hopefully this front has them in their feet.

First legal buck to give me a shot was on my last day bowhunting for the year. Saw a few spikes and Doe but never in range He came through at 25 yards and stopped broadside. I heard the pop when the Rage hit, he ran off full tilt and I heard him crash. Went about 100 yards. Hoping for a big one in gun season. I hit him a little lower than I aimed. My stand is about 23 feet high but the entry and exit wounds are the same level. Makes no sense. Not sure if anyone has experienced that. Been a while since I’ve logged in here. But, I was lurking the last couple days and needed to be involved. Currently snowing in northern Cayuga County. I guess we will see if the deer get up or hunker down.

Let's see if I can get this out coherently. Left the house at 430. Saw Lots of deer along the park way as usual. Parked around 530 and started the mile hike in. 40 degrees and wind from the West. Crossbow over my shoulder and carrying an old climber. About halfway in I saw a flashlight in the distance. Trespasser. Got to my tree around 6 and realize the tree I had planned to use was to big for the climber. In the dark I found another one but it had a limb about 8 feet up. The climber was surprisingly quiet for being so old. Right around 645 I had 3 or 4 doe come running in to my left. About 50yds out they turn into the woods and onto another property. While getting ready for the shot I notice that the cables are too long and so the platform is tipping forward. At that time, maybe 7 o'clock I notice another doe to my right. At about 60yds she also turned into the woods. I could see a few of them still smiling around behind me. Around 715 I saw a deer feeding in the acorns to my left, 100yds and closing. Buck. He came to shoot 35 yds and was broadside. I took the shot but misjudged the distance. Clean miss. After a free minutes of debating i climb down to recover the arrow. Found it covered in mud. Went back to the climber and found a better tree. Adjusted the cable length and climbed to about 10 ft. Felt better about the new tree but when I tried to host the crossbow, it was stuck. I had to climb back down to free it. Did that and then climbed back up. I figure my day might be shot because of all my commotion. I finally get back up in the tree, turn around and see another Buck marching through the beans straight to me at about 100yds and closing fast. I quickly raise my crossbow and load a bolt. The Buck presented a 12 yd broadside chip shot. He went about 50 yds and laid right down. First time using a climber and first deer with a crossbow. First Buck in 10 yrs. He isn't the biggest, but he'll be good eating. I learned a lot on this hunt and now the pressure is off.

This guy was tending a doe hard tonight - she walked off and he stayed with her- acknowledged and “spit on” my grunt and snort wheeze. Had three other does in front of me out of range- one thought it would be funny to practice blowing out her birthday candle. She must be close to 50 cause she blew ALOT!!!! Just had the big 10 and the big 8 chase a doe back and forth 70 yards away.

Its been a blast getting up to speed whitetail hunting after living in the Colorado mountains my adult life and chasing elk... My biggest question is just how many trillion acorns can these little guys vacuum up? And yes, elk are wary but nothing like a whitetail doe that knows its hunting season.

11/2: hunted with xbow with dad on his land. 29 degrees and barely any wind. Sent him to lower end of property and I went to the acorn flat blind. Cam showed a 8pt on 10/30 and a spike with a 4pt. I got into my blind at 630-ish. At 645am I heard a deer coming and saw a deer 28yds broadside but i couldn’t see antlers since it was too dark (sunrise 727am). The deer slowly walked away. At 745am I was glassing up to my right when I saw a deer. It was a tight 4 or 6pt. Eating and rubbing his antlers on some trees. He was about 80yards. I decided to try my grunt call to see if maybe he was with a bigger buck who would come In too. After hitting the grunt I got His attention, but I heard movement to my left. I looked left and saw an 8pt. 19 yards away making an aggressive scrape in the spot I always scrape in front of my trail cam. I knew right away this 8pt was a shooter but he was facing me with head down making a scrape so I couldn’t shoot. I planned to wait till he turned broadside either way. Instead he lifted his head way up high and started rubbing the branches above him. I had read a lot about frontal shots for year and to aim for a “front shirt pocket”. Being that i had the xbow and felt steady (while shaking mentally) I took the shot since it was wide open and so close. I heard a loud crack as the bolt went right through him. He tried to run uphill and tumbled back down. I saw him go down. He died 16 yards from the shot. My cam 2 pics of him before I shot at 750am. As I got my stuff together to leave the blind, the small 4/6pt came right in under 30yards. What a day! His antlers were all rubbed with trees and on the drag out I saw 3 fresh rubs. Up and out at 5 am . Drove the 22 miles to my property . 20 minutes to 6 I .go to put on my hunting clothes ... I forgot my boots at home on the dryer . SOB !!!!!!.. all l had was my crocks..

Lunch today at an Italian restaurant, this is their house Italian blonde ale , with some sort of tree part in it .... it was ok . Im drinking an Other Half ipa right now , no trees .

My first morning of a 20 day vacation, had a Spike and 6 come by, an hour later I hear grunts close by in the bedding area, I grunt back, nothing. About an hour later I hear a weird noise and a stick break in the same spot. I stand up and grab my bow just in case. Out comes the biggest buck we have on camera. He's at 35 so I adjust my sight and he turns and comes on the sidehill above me at 25 yds. No time to adjust the sight so I held low and put it behind the shoulder and I didn't dare to try to stop him So I shoot. It hits him a bit back, he runs 30 yds, stops, looking around, then panics and runs 50yds to the top of the hill and stands, wagging his tail fast. I slip out quiet and gave him 6 hours. We slipped back in and took up the trail before dark, pretty steady blood for about 75 yds then we see 2 bloody beds about 4' apart. While I glance up I see him 5 yds away but his head looks up. We watch him for a few seconds and I see his antlers move. I kneel down and put one in his lungs and he rolled onto his back and died. My best buck to date! 190# dressed. 11 points. While waiting for my buddy to meet me I had a 7pt cruise right by my truck without a care in the world! Sent from my moto g(6) using Tapatalk

Had this guy come down a ravine to my right a minute after I check the wind . As I watched my milk weed float to the left I looked over and thought oh cool nice little buck, no way he’s going to come my way. He started walking toward the trail that we walked in stopped on a dime and started heading my way. Now I’m thinking great how can I draw my bow. The only way was if he walks in front of a tree that was in my way. Well he did , I drew back he popped out 12 yards and the rest is history . So happy I can’t believe the way he came in to me.
