  2. Great all day sit. Probably a record for deer seen for me, all but one were does. Lone buck chasing a doe way too fast for a shot attempt. Does got passes all day. Shortly before 4pm, group of does woke up and started to.make their way towards me. I reached into my pocket for another pass, but my doe tag came out instead. Went 20 yards and piled up. 3. Just got back into town this weekend. Sat in my “under-ground blind” last evening and in my “nest stand” this morning...still waiting for a deer to come by. I hunted the Massena area last week and saw more deer in a single sit then I typically do all season at my house...unfortunately they (at least the close ones) were all doe...no doe tags. I had several come within 10-15 yards (I was hunting on the ground). On a side note, I trapped several coyotes, fisher, and a bobcat. Good luck!

  7. While walking to my tree stand this morning I really had my doubts at seeing any deer due to the amount of coyote tracks in the snow but at 10:10 2 doe came trotting underneath my tree stand from behind. I had to react quick and gave a couple of bleats to stop them.I took the lead doe, she was quartering away and I hit her far back on the left side and the bolt exited the right shoulder. She didn't go far.Now I can relax and concentrate on a buck, hopefully the 10 point is still around.I have the whole week off to hunt so maybe I can get a chance to see him.

  9. Just fixed this tine for a buddy of mine. Antler was kinda weak/pourus...thus the dark color. Paint needs to dry still and I'll probably have to do some touchups.

  13. Ganna be a long post. Well it started fast and ended fast with an oops in the middle. I cant sit long in the cold we had this morning so me and a buddy did some wind bumps on stateland. Came to first spot and saw a big 8 working his way through so i dropped buddy off and tried to get around on him hoping he would cruise by one of us. He ended up going onto neighbors with a doe past my friend. Heading to spot 2 we spotted a monster 8 crossing onto stateland. Never saw him again after we tried to get around him. Went and scouted a couple spots for opener. We decided to sit for 2.5 hrs around 9. I had a lone unknown go through around 10 it ended up by friend turned out to be a 4pt. 1130 we headed out because we wanted to hit up my lease. Did a spot and stalk on a small doe. Wind shifted right before it got in my friends shooting lane i was trying to get the kill on camera. Lease: this is where it got bad before the good. So i forgot my pack at home and wad carrying rattling horns over my shoulder. Get to my stand and i hear a deer blowing. My friend jumped it going into another stand. It comes flying up to me to 8 yards i make sure horns are out of my way and release the arrow and kaboom arrow slams into the ground horns smack my face bust my fingers up. Look at the bow, string came off the cam moved the dloop and what im most grateful for it a was clean. So i draw bow to get my string back on bottom cam slide loop back, check for any breaks, get my small game arrow out and shoot a stump. bows shooting good like nothing happened. All i can think is that in the rush of it the horns slid down and in the way of the strings path. Then i forget my pull up rope so i had to tie my belt to bow and climbing harness. Get setup yep there goes the release out of the tree. Text my buddy my fun and said a 12 better come through now. Well it gor better 230 had a button buck work 70yrds from me and into the meadow. 3 i look at the other end of meadow i see a doe walking past another stand(one told my friend to sit in.lol). 330 another one pops out. 340 that doe spooks over above me which is when the bb went out of field. So i decided to hit horns and here comes 2 looked like doe and buck. Get eyes on the big body and holy crap its my target buck. So i grunt at him and he postures walked over to a tree completely destroys it and makes a scrape. I grunt again and he starts posturing towards me then stops and takes off up the hill(guessing he had a doe,he stopped and was looking before) because i finally spot other deer he was with its a spike. As i getting down another doe comes in and jump another doe. Be back in the stand in am. Sorry forong post it was a busy day. Congrats to anybody who took one today havent read through to check.

  14. Update on the bears . I think they were hunting deer . They stuck around and kept running back and forth for almost 4 hrs . Every time I had deer race by me a bear would show up shortly after. My buddy's stand was 400 yds from me and he got this pic. No bears were shot . Neither one of us wanted to kill one lol.

  15. Been out all day in three different stands because of wind shifts. Was looking to shoot a doe. Of course with no buck tag, I saw nine different bucks! A couple of doe too, but no shots because the bucks were chasing them! Its on here! Right on time as tomorrow is the "Magic Day" of November 10th ! Best of luck to all going out tomorrow!

  16. Did a full day sit today that wasnt planned. Solid action in the morning carried me into the afternoon so I figured why not. I probably saw 10 different bucks, couple shooters but none in range. Several doe as well. Really good hunt

  18. Something felt good about this morning with the fresh blanket of snow and my sister/her fam being in for an early thanksgiving.multiple sets of tracks 50 yards from the house and bumping 3 in the field on way in i thought for sure it would be a bust.have had this 7pt on cam many times and told myself im not passing anything this late in the bow season 7am rolls around and i hear crunching just to my left and sure enough i see him walking right in my direction, stood up and clipped release.at this point he's at 25 yards on the trail.puts his head behind a tree and i draw.expecting him to take a few steps more and he turned back around heading other direction.followed him then something was blocking my view through peep.not sure what it was but(leafy jacket maybe)moved my draw arm a bit, gave em a bleat and released.heard the thunk, ran 80 yards n stood there for a solid 5 mins then slowly walked off.waited until he was out of sight to check hit spot. White hair/little blood/no arrow....great,another replay of last year's bow buck.called first neigh or to get permission.went back to house to wait for dad and bro inlaw to help track(2 1/2-3 hrs).started at hit site and worked to where i saw him standing.good patch of dark blood with bubbles!found a bed with 2 nice spots of blood in it.most of this track turned into following hoof tracks/blood on the golden rod and saplings every 40 or so yards.at this point had deer search pulled up on my phone....hit 2nd neighbors property line and backed out. got back to the house and told my dad this isnt over yet,i wont give up.made a few phone calls and got permission.ate thanksgiving then went back out, just dad and i as brother inlaw passed out in recliner.marked last blood on huntstand app,50 yards from there with dad right behind me marking last blood there he layed.threw my hands up and said we got em!!!High fives,a hug and smiles.will definitely be one of my most memorable hunts with my dad by my side on the track for the first time.1 Lung and liver.i recall him saying atleast 3 times(wow,i cant believe how tough these animals are).now to get him on a deer during gun season!! Just goes to show how tough they truly are.still baffles me on how the heck i had white hair when my shot wasnt that low Sorry for the long story guys!!!!!!!

  19. There is no confusion, standers stay in stand till drive is done , doesnt matter if you shoot world record.you stay in stand or spot assigned , there is no I can see. Better from over there... Walkers know where others are in diagonal line moving deer ahead. 25 years and never had a problem with deer taken on drives.. well one incident where guy was watching drive on my side hill while driving swerved off road hit pole and rolled truck.. but he wasnt part of the drive..

  21. I should be out hunting today but I finally had it all come together today with a tractor to use and enough time to get something done with this blind I've had for over a year. Me and a buddy got it up in the air this morning. It still needs some work and I'm a little short on lumber but I'm hoping to get it done tomorrow. I now have two of these, one set up for east winds and one for west winds.

  25. Had a great hunt this morning against a snowy backdrop. It didn't last too long as I had a doe come through solo......she gave me about a 16-17 yard shot and I made it count. She headed back the way she came after the shot and after about 60 yards I saw the tell tale flicker of her flag. I didn't actually see her drop but I was confident enough to only give her 30 minutes before I climbed down and took up the trail. She was where I thought......... The drag was MUCH nicer than the buck last Saturday evening; 30 yards on level ground to a seasonal driveway.

  30. Crazy Bow season lots of weird stuff happened and back pains kept me out of the woods a lot but in the end a success... 10/14 7:45am Big Doe: 11/3 7:30am Yearling Doe: 11/6 2:30pm 11pt: He came right into my 2d doe decoy and antler Ice after I tickled the rattle bag and made an estrus bleat...5 yards but I regret the between the shoulder shot I took from above...never again 700 yard track over 2 days found him this am don’t think he died til last night all the meat is still perfect temps were awesome! Lucky guy on all counts... All my neighbors are awesome the shot was taken behind my parents and ran through every neighbor property in between and 2 more over, Awesome Rural Community! My wife took rutcation fir me this week I Love Her! Great harvests and nice bucks all (biz with the xbow!) have a great gun season!

  31. This morning was hunt #18 for the season. I bumped a doe walking in and saw 4 more does wander through. I never heard this guy walking in, he just materialized over a small ridge about 30 yards away. He came straight toward me (and in front of a trail cam) and at about 15 yards he started to angle around me. When he finally started to turn broadside, he was under 10 yards from my tree stand (sorry Biz... not from the ground). He was walking slowly and I didn't dare try to stop him when he was that close. I aimed just behind shoulder and halfway up his body. I hit him a little further back than I planned, and he took off running. He stopped about 30 yards away and started looking around, I was hoping he would fall right there. I could see blood pouring out of the exit wound. Instead of falling, he casually walked out of sight. I got down from the stand and checked the arrow. Covered in good blood, and I could see his tracks and blood. I slowly followed and found him piled up just over 100 yards from where I shot him. The bolt entered through the 6th rib about halfway up, and exited between 6th and seventh low on the other side. The Rage did a great job almost cutting one lung in half, and punching a hole through the liver. Because he was so close, and just slightly quartered toward me, I missed the offside lung. I'm very happy and thankful for a nice buck and a quick, clean kill. I won't be hunting the next two weekends (likely best 2 weekends) because of travel, and plans, so the timing of this was perfect. While I was skinning him I noticed a large bald patch on his back between his shoulder blades, looks like some sort of scar.

  34. I finalized my plans this morning and picked out my "target" buck from a group of (4). He looks like a near-match to the 2.5 year 8-point that I killed with my crossbow last Saturday on the opposite corner of DMU 9f. If all goes well, he will stroll by a stand that I have left un-hunted thru archery season. He was headed that way when I last saw him. If he don't, then I will be able to enjoy Adirondack deer hunting over the Thanksgiving long weekend, which is something I really missed last year after tagging out on opening day.

  35. I never gave much thought on how much the moon phases affected deer movement until I saw it first hand out in West Texas 4 weeks ago. About 3-4 days before and after the full moon , you could not find an animal to save your life in the dawn hours to mid morning.I would always see mule deer does, javelinas, black buck and Aoudad sheep at the feeders. During this moon phase you saw nothing ,I mean not an animal until about 10-11 am. Then there would be a lull until about 4-5 pm. , then unbelievable movement into dark. I don’t take the time on the tables , literally but in general, deer movement is in blocks of 4-5 hrs alternating between bedding and feeding. Now I if feed is abundant, movement would be suppressed due to not having to travel far for food. The rut or chasing phase puts a spin on this , but when the doe bed , buck movement will slow. Didn’t mean to ramble ,but getting into another lull period. and killing time.

  38. In truth, a "brush gun" is, by definition, a gun used in thick cover where shots are at close range. It is NOT the mythical gun that can be expected to shoot bullets through "brush" and still hit the target. If there is such a gun, it's a short barreled repeating shotgun using buckshot with lots of pellets in the round. A gun used in thick cover is best when it handles quickly ( because deer often jump up fast), can provide fast follow up shots (because deer run as soon as they jump up) and has enough power to kill the animal being hunted. If chambered for a "rifle" round, it must be a heavier gun. That means slower handling. Rifle rounds produce more recoil. More recoil means slower follow up shots. Rifle rounds have more than enough power. That means most of the power is unnecessary. Preferring to carry a bigger rifle chambered for a longer range cartridge will give the hunter a chance at deer farther away, but it compromises the hunter's chances at close range deer in thick cover. Considering the fact an M1 Carbine makes a good "brush" gun for deer when shots are all going to be under 50 yards, and a lever gun in .357 magnum has proven to be quite adequate for short range deer hunting, it is only logical a repeating, carbine length .44 magnum would be a good choice for hunting deer in thick cover where shots will be at close range. It handles quickly, provides fast follow up shots and has enough power to kill deer, especially when it shoots a 240 grain or larger bullet that has a large frontal area and high sectional density. (Sectional density (a bullet's weight in pounds divided by its diameter squared) describes a bullet's length for its diameter: The higher the number, the longer the bullet. Generally speaking, the larger a bullet's sectional density, the deeper it will penetrate.) Therefore, IMHO, a "brush gun" in .44 magnum would be at the top of the scale specified by the OP.

  40. Tagged out on my buck tag a month ago, finally got windy enough on the lake today to take the kids out. Just me in the blind with a license so two mallards in a short time and I was done already. I really miss the 4 mallard limit already as I could have had a few more, and to be honest 3-4 birds is just enough breasts to feed the family one meal. Same two ducks, my youngest (7) and my oldest (10) just taking turns for a picture.

  42. 11/8/19 I was called tonight by a hunter that shot an 11 pointer he’d been waiting for. He and three buddies looked for over an hour, but all they could find was a little brown hair. There was no blood, and they couldn’t find his tracks from after the shot. Kunox started at the hair and went into tall thick nasty swamp grass and downed trees, but could only walk about 10 yards in before being unable to get through it. I looked around a short distance and didn’t see any sign so I took him back to the hair. He did the same thing, then turned around and went the opposite way into a thicket. I let him look around in there awhile, and at one point he went hot. Investigation showed tracks too small for our buck. I took him back to the hair and one of the guys said he thought he had smelled the buck in the area Kunox had first gone to. I put Kunox down and he went back to the swamp grass, so this time I carried him around to see if he could smell anything. Sure enough, back goes his head and the sniffer went into overdrive. I watched him as I walked and he took me right to the dead buck. He was only 50 yards away, but you couldn’t see him until you were literally right on top of him. Great bunch of guys....I’d track for them anytime.

  44. I got my 2nd doe. I made a shot worse than on my last doe and had to leave this one overnight. Luckily she didn't go far,it was at the edge of a pretty thick area where i shot her. She about crawled under this uprooted tree. I could just see a little brown patch on the hole. I am happy she didn't go far and the coyotes didn't get her,but i did. She is a good size doe and will hopefully get along with the other one in the freezer. I am going to butcher her right now.
