  1. Took my 10 year old son out this morning for his first opening day ( legal disclaimer he did not shoot or have a gun). Shot this guy around 745, 10 pointer with a huge g2, the other side g2 was snapped off but is still a legal point. Will probably get home mounted due to the hunting memory more than anything. My son is the one who saw him and said big buck coming. Heart shot and he went about 100 and he watched him pile up.

  6. What a crazy sit, in pa we have a resident grouse who follows us everywhere, he decided to sit in my treestand with me all day and peck at me. 8 am nice buck comes through not sure if I want to shoot him or not, (7pt no brows about 100”) I grunt him into 12 yards and the damn grouse flys up on my head and shoulder and starts flapping around. Buck spooks off and I laugh my ass off and the fighting this grouse for 2 more hours. He does not leave and jumps on my head as im Climbing down the treestand, then followed me to my buddies stand who happened to shoot a doe while pissing out of his elevated blind. Literally balls out shot a doe with a crossbow. What a day.

  7. Just kidding folks. But this is what happens when you take your kid hunting. He shoots a doe and a buck in the first hour with single drop dead shots from his .308. And for me? I get to help field dressing both deer and hauling them out with my atv. But seriously I am so happy for him as he has a new baby coming Dec. 6 and won't be able to hunt after that. valoroutdoors.com

  8. Well conclusion to my crazy live from the woods story. I finally see the guy that shot buck this morning in the field around 9:00. I went over to talk him and also see what deer he shot. The guy had kill another buck and it was dead in the field. The reason he didn’t look for first buck he shot in the morning was because he heard me shoot and figured I had put the buck down. The first buck the guy shot in the leg and on top hind leg. The two shot he took didn’t kill deer , and when I saw the buck still crawling and I put one shot in the vitals. Guy was a nice hunter , the guy even help me drag my buck to his truck loaded into his truck and he even drop my buck over my house. Glad to say we both got bucks opening. To God be the glory .

  21. No cell service on the lease so this is a bit late . Connected with my granddads savage on a good sized doe at 45 -50 yards about 9:30 . Had a hole in the brush big enough I could see her shoulder , neck head . The hand loaded 165 grain Speer hot core did a number on her shoulder, She ran ten yards. Bitter sweet as I wanted to shoot a deer with the savage but would have much rather had my wife or son fill our one doe tag. She’s skinned hanging in the garage, wife and I will process tomorrow.

  23. Always excited for opening morning of regular season. This will be my 48th opening morning. And I always reflect back to the first few. Hunting with the old farmer guys that have long since passed on. The guys that took a fatherless, stubborn kid who found peace in the woods. Took him under their wings, and started him hunting. From my first opening morning, I can still smell and taste the strong black coffee, and the thick bacon, on homemade biscuits in the farmhouse kitchen. As we made "the plan" on who was going where. They were all shining examples of good men. And I hate to think where I may have ended up without their influences on my life. Ray, Don, Bill, and Warren......will be sitting with me in the morning. Whispering encouragement as always. And I will give my thanks to them again for doing what they did. And at some point, try to pass along to someone else, the values and love of hunting that they gave to me. Well.... My hunting partner took a ride around this morning, and saw one of my target bucks near where I'm going in the morning!!! A four year old, heavy six point that i'm sure will dress out close to 200lbs. Hope to see him tomorrow! Good luck to all of you. Keep safe. Shoot what you like, like what you shoot!!

  28. Nice buck 9pt I took this morning at 9:30. Neighbor missed him twice but I didn't. Dropped in his tracks! Redish head and his bottom legs are piebald like even the claws.

  29. Doe down. Not sure what I did on the first shot (missed) but all three stopped for a minute and then walked straight to me. 25 yards and a 30 yard run before crashing. Meat for the freezer and a good start to gun opener.

  33. Super psyched for tomorrow. I haven't missed an opening morning in 35 yrs. That said, daughter is up from out of state with our 2 and 1/2 yr old granddaughter for her annual buck, and between my wife, daughter, and I, someone has to stay behind with Evelyn. I'm thinking I may do the chivalrous thing and volunteer for the morning granddaughter watch. Sounds crazy, but this little smiling face makes it easy. Plus I'm off work til the 25th, back for 3 days and then off for 4 more. I'm more into the ladies getting their deer this year, and I can bat cleanup. As long as they don't have me recovering dead deer all afternoon, I'll be fine with getting out at noon for the rest of the day. Facetimed with her last night and she told me for the umpteenth time that she wants to go get a buck with me. I can always lay the rifle outside on the deck...

  34. Dragging a friend's buck out on Nov 2, I unfortunately hurt my back right at the start of rutcation (L4-L5 and L5-S1); presently dealing with a battery of tests and alot of challenges I'll have to deal with over the next few weeks. Stupid amount of pain, too. Surgery likely looming. I was dumb enough to push it probably too far; managed to get out with the help of a friend 9 days out of the originally planned 12 off. The other three I couldn't get out of bed due to pain/soreness. The sets were close to the truck and as expected, just outside the bulk of the action. A few close encounters with target bucks but physically it just didn't work out well, including one miss due to unfamiliarity with a borrowed xbow. Sometimes I could carry the bow and sometimes my friend had to walk me out. My wife is proud. Really, she is. I promise. She's still yelling at me, and I can hear her. I'm at work now 35 miles away. The evening of our snowstorm, I hunted the PM and on the walk out of the woods, picked up on where a target buck was bedded in some swale on a hedge row based on tracks and being able to glass him in the dark against a farm flood light. The next PM I drug myself with a Lone Wolf to the spot I thought I could get him and sat it out a whopping 6 inches off the ground. No usable trees to get higher and I couldn't carry a blind or sit in a folding chair comfortably. I couldn't climb either, let's just be real about it. At 3:30, three does come across an open field with the last being this one. I had to take the opportunity and did. 30 minutes later the target buck stepped out of the bedding and skirted me at 80 yards not knowing I was there; he picked up the trail of the does that came in with this one and followed the way they ran after the shot. He was shot the next morning by the neighbor. I was too sore to make the morning hunt and I got images of him on three cells cams that AM. That left me high and dry with no strong confidence moves to make on the last day of rutcation. Ah well. Still had as much fun as I could.

  35. Finally back to civilization, after shooting my buck Tuesday I spend wed-Friday trying to track a buck with a guy I work with that wanted me to teach him some tracking. We got on a few good ones but he was never able to get a shot off. I think I wore him out because He decided not to hunt this morning so we came home a day early. Thanks everyone for the congratulations, it was an awesome hunt now I’m just sad I have to wait a few weeks to do it again in Mass. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
