  1. Evening sit for hunting partner and I. We passed on a button buck at 2:30 60 yds away. That was all we saw. On way home farm fields were full of deer after dusk.

  3. Well, snow to rain to snow to grapple. That’s why I’m heading for the hunting hut. Nice views from here and dry! Look closely if you want a laugh. I built the wall panels separately and moved them out of the barn to paint. The paint job came out fine but when we put it all together in the field, my buddies immediately noticed that my trees were all upside down! Ah well. Warm and dry.

  4. Went for a creep around the woods today with my camera, didn't bring a gun because I don't need another deer. I found some deer and got in pretty close, still not positive how many were there but several does and a few bucks. Conditions weren't great for photography and these pics aren't good by any means but pretty neat. The buck on the right was a 2 yr old 6 pt out to his ears. Sent from my moto g(6) using Tapatalk

  5. They just don't come any tougher than wooly. He's still around, just really busy. Was wondering about some of the members mentioned too. Hope they are all ok? When I go to the clearing at the end of the path, have a huntingny GTG and talk smack about me!!!!! The first deer season, after I reach the clearing, I'll come and sit with each and every one of ya's!!

  6. On Sunday morning (12/1/19) while sitting in my tree stand I heard a crunching movement off in the distance. The ground was frosted with a temperature of 21* and the crunching sound was real brief so I actually wasn't sure if it was a couple steps from a deer or just a squirrel. I turned my head scanning the area in the direction of the sound for about 3 to 4 minutes looking for the source of the crunching that I heard. I didn't see anything or hear anymore movement and figured that it must have been a squirrel. Then about a minute after I turned my head away, I heard two buck grunts coming from the same general area where I had heard the brief movement a few minutes beforehand. The area where I heard the movement and now heard the buck grunts from, consists of a decent sized pond situated about 115 yards from my tree stand. The area bordering the east side of the pond is a thick bedding area that I leave as a sanctuary on my property, only going through there if I have to track a hit deer through that area. Scanning this area from my stand, I still didn’t see any deer and I didn't hear anymore movement, so I believed that the buck I heard was slowly cruising through the bedding area looking for any receptive does. I waited another couple minutes to see if the buck that made the grunts would come into view to determine if he was traveling away from my stand area or towards my stand area. I still wasn’t hearing any more movement and still had no deer come into view. So, at this point I grabbed my deer call and made two doe in estrous bleats with it. After about 30 seconds, I could hear the crunching movement of a deer walking on the frosted leaves on the forest floor in my direction from the pond area. Then, after about another 30 seconds the buck finally came into view. It was an 8 point buck, slowly walking down towards my stand area. At this point the buck was about 40 yards away moving through some brush and was walking slowly, stopping every few steps, turning his head looking back and forth trying to find the doe that he heard make the doe in estrous bleats. Within a few more seconds, the buck eventually worked his way down to an opening in front of my stand offering me a 35 yard shot. My shot hit its mark and I harvested an 8 point buck that I called in with my deer call. I've experienced success calling some deer to my calls but this was the first time that I actually harvested a deer that I called in...pretty exciting to say the least. I had passed on this buck during bow season at about 11 yards and I passed on a 70 yard shot at him yesterday chasing a group of does, but now this late in the season and offering such a chip shot he was out of passes.

  7. My girlfriend thinks I’ve lost it. Bailed out of work a couple of hours early, plowed the driveway, loaded the wood stove, and now I’m sitting in a tree overlooking a small turnip patch. I’m armed with nothing but my phone and video camera. I’ve been seeing a good buck but I don’t have a tag. I really just enjoy this more and more as I get older!

  9. When I hunt the afternoon I always set the alarm on my phone for the end up legal shooting time. Went out this afternoon and sat through the swirling winds and blowing snow until dark(legal). I packed my stuff up and headed out, go about 25 yards from where I was sitting and see two deer about 60 yards away. I head their way and drop down into a little dip and when I come up there they are broadside 50 yards away. Couldn't see any horns but I have two doe tags for that area. I pull the gun up and can see them clear as day through the scope. I look at my watch and it is just about nine minutes after legal so I lower the gun and watch them feed for a little bit then mosey on down the hill to my truck. First deer I have seen in fourteen days. With only three days left I know I did the right thing and will just have to take my chances for the remainder of the season.

  10. The new Saturday start had all four kids returning to my farm for the first day of buck season. Stand locations where assigned and 1 ground blind was set up for the youngest of the group. The day dawned clear and frosty cold but deer movement was good and stand locations were where they needed to be Addison was the first youth to shoot. A nice Five Point gave her a broadside shot at 60 yards and with one of my 243 rifles he dropped in his tracks. Shortly after Addison shot I heard a Abby shoot from their blind location and was soon after sent a picture of Abby with her 10-point buck she shot with a 243 rifle with reduced recoil loads Gavin and I had seen two big eight points that he couldn't get a shot at and one other huge buck that was running so no shot taken by 10 a.m. We changed stand locations up onto my Oak flat and it was non-stop action at 2:15 3 buckchase two doe out of the sanctuary and as Gavin was getting ready to shoot the larger 8 point I looked up and saw another bigger buck coming so I told him to hold off I grunted the buck stopped at 50 yards away and I knew at the shot when the deer took off that it was hit hard and I thought I saw him pile up but we waited 15 minutes before we climb down to find a healthy blood trail and I had Gavin to track his buck. At the end of the trail he had a beautiful 10 point on the ground shot with his brand new rifle that I bought him for Christmas. Colton and his dad it changed stand locations and went to my corner stand where Addison shot her Buck at that morning and at 4:30 an 8 point came out with 8 doe and he made the 80-yard shot. The kids all did very well all one shot kills and very little tracking required. To say the excitement level in Camp Saturday night was that a fever pitch would be a huge understatement. 11. We had our annual youth antlerless hunt during the Oct. Youth season 3 of the kids arrived prior to the first day and checked out the blind locations I had set up for them. All 3 of the youth hunters scored the first day on adult doe. Gavin is 13 and has been hunting with me in pa since age 7 Addison is 10 and has been hunting since age 6 in pa. My buddy's daughter abby is 8 and this is her 2nd year hunting my farm. My buddy's son colton is 12 and has been hunting my farm for 4 years. This years antlerless hunt. 12. A short sit on stand this morning. Filled my 7M doe tag. Deer tracks were everyplace I looked on my way to my stand, and all around my stand as well. Something has them on their feet. My sits have been few in number and pretty short in length with a severe respiratory infection kicking my rear almost all gun season. I'll put story on harvest thread tomorrow. I'm calling it a day, a good but tiring one at that.

  15. Small flat-top joined me a half hour ago, bedded down 25 yards away. We've had coffee, watched squirrels play, caught snow flakes on our tounges, cruised the internet, and a few other activities. Can't get bigger friends to come out ant play with us... 18. You may want to "Educate" yourself on the ways of the Whitetail. You can call them scouts or any other name but the fact is 9 times out of 10 you would see a mature deer be the last deer out regardless of what other deer they are with unless maybe a hot Doe is involved. It's called evolution before it's called a mature Buck knows he is with some stupid spike buck so he is going to send him out first. I know better than most how smart a deer can be but they sure ain't that smart. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  19. Had a very similar experience yesterday, but by only 4 minutes after sunset. I don't set my alarm (great idea by the way) but I watch my phone like a hawk towards the end of the afternoon making sure I don't goof up with the time, especially on overcast days and/or snowy days when it is hard for me to be certain the sun is dropping below the horizon. Then today I think I was rewarded by taking a nice big doe. Judging from her size and that she was all alone, I almost wonder if she's the same one I watched last night. I think you too will be rewarded for making the right decision. Good luck!

  28. I got out Thanksgiving Morning with my stepson for our 3rd, and possibly final sit for the year together. The 35 mph winds and snow squalls wasn't stopping him from wanting to fill a tag. We chose a ground blind that i felt would be tucked in out of the wind more than most places and not far from a bedding area.. First whitetail to show was a fawn, it stepped out from cover and fed out in front of us, a few moments after entering, another bigger bodied deer appeared right behind it feeding away. We watched them for awhile waiting on more. After 15-20 minutes, nothing else showed up. And these 2 had made their minds up that they were moving on, So we decided to attempt a shot at the bigger of the 2. He had a buck tag, a doe tag, and I had 2 doe tags that could be filled for the area. So we elected to get him his first deer by rifle regardless. Well what we thought was a doe, especially by how it was acting with and around the fawn. Ended up being his first buck ever, he was super pumped. I can't explain how happy I am for him, how happy he was for himself! We could literally see zero sign of antlers over the deer's head, Not that it matters it was his first and he is pumped to say the least! I couldnt be more happy for him. Bucks tagged legal and in the freezer! I brought my tripod I use for predator hunting to help him to my best ability. He split that bucks ticker in 3 pieces with a 140gr ELD at 120 yrds and it still ran a good 50 yards!! Kids a sniper in the making! That morning he learned what it was like to enter the tip of a sharp knife into a nice warm deer stomach! that irreplaceable sound and instant smell of a stomach deflating! LOL!! i hadn't laughed so hard in a long time, I tried to warn him to turn his knife around that you'd be better this way especially working around that stomach of his with the initial incision lol. He insisted it was how his dad showed him.. Lucky for him Im a good guy, and instead of only one set of blessed field dressing covered arms, there were 2 since he couldn't hold his own stomach together lol!! It'd be nice to get out and fill a doe tag or 2 before seasons end together. And a selfie after the shot!

  33. I was looking into it myself and it appeared that most use the chest freezer with the lamp to maintain the temps. I also was unaware that it wasn't the "beetles" that did the majority of the eating but the larva so they need to be a breeding colony. My wife would kill me, she isn't buying into the whole skinned drying animal smell in the garage from the trapping skins...lol

  37. We fishermen know what we want in a boat. And what's right for one, is completely wrong for another based on how and what we fish for. Rob, you have done it long enough to know exactly what you want and need! Settle for nothing less! Buy once cry once and you will always be happy out on the water! The console steer, is to me the most comfortable with my bad shoulders. And I would always prefer to have a little more HP than to be underpowered. Both of the boats you are leaning towards are nice boats. The only issue you have is deciding what will work the best for YOU. You already know the answer to that better than any of us. Go with exactly what you 'want' and 'need' and perhaps a little more. And don't look back! You will never be sorry! I have had many different boats over my lifetime. And when it came to my last purchase, I knew what I 'wanted' and 'needed' for what I enjoyed fishing for most....bass. So a pro style bass boat was the answer to me. By the time I got done adding all the gadgets and gizmos I had quite the sticker shock!! BUT.....there is not one time, that I turn the key on that boat when my face doesn't light up in a smile. It fits me perfect. That is your decision to make on your new boat purchase my friend. What will fit YOU perfect??? I think you already know. Good luck. Can't wait to see the pic's of the new rig! See ya on the water!!

  39. Got out all day today, saw more deer today then all season (of course the snow helped). Pull up to one of my spots with a spike I saw opening day literally standing in my parking spot. Decided to try a different spot after he went running. Fresh tracks everywhere. Took long way around to a bedding area to keep wind in my favor, by time I got there sun was up and I see fresh tracks coming from the bedding area, followed them and spooked a feeding doe. Was able to pick up fresh tracks and locate a out 10 deer (two different locations), and also came across 3 does bedded down together ((no doe tags). One big one went running when I was on another track, couldnt count point but that was the one I was waiting for. I saw for a few hours with nothing so got up to keep warm. Gonna try to sit still tomorrow - not exactly sure how to still hunt and get close enough without spooking them.
