  1. I went to Geneseo this afternoon to help my SIL put 120 bales of hay in her barn . Then I set out to check my trail cameras . I took a route that I hadn't gone on in a long time . I saw a trail camera on a tree and I had the key to the cable lock and brought the camera home . I had to cut the lock on the door to get the SD card . Uploaded the 4465 pictures . They were from 12-30-2014 to 9-12-2016 . The card was full and couldn't take anymore pics . I had forgotten all about this camera and it is in excellent shape . Need to get batteries for it . 4. I understand you do not know me. I am a Kung Fu instructor, temple ordained Sifu. Have trained at THE temple in the Wudang mountains for 10+ years and here in the states for 12+ years prior. 2 time NYS champ (back to back). In all honesty, I enjoy a good tussle.

  8. There has always been a population of fishers in the Adirondacks..I have a NYS Fishing and hunting syllabus from 1959-1960 that lists a trapping season in the northern zone from Oct.25 to Dec. 31...I think the fishers, like the coyotes, expanded southward and westward as the forests matured and the habitat became more suitable for them.. Pennsylvania did stock a bunch of them in the north central counties and it is believed that this population has expanded northward into adjacent NY counties...I am not aware of any NYDEC stocking of them.. Although fishers have the ability to kill and eat porcupines ( more so than most predators) I don't think they are a favored food source for them...In the first place, porkies have a very low reproduction rate, and even in places where they are relatively plentiful, there aren't that many of them...Besides that, killing a porcupine without ending up as a pin cushion is quite a challenge, even for a fisher..They would much prefer to take easier prey, such as squirrels.. I think squirrels and other rodents make up the bulk of a fisher's diet, although they are voracious, opportunistic predators and will take rabbits, birds and most anything small enough for them to kill if they get a chance..

  13. Had this happen to me in Bushwick Brooklyn when I was in my twenties. I still have his gun to this day...and he probably still has a limp. I am always armed, no matter what. I do, however, prefer to be up close, personal and silent so I am more of a knife guy. I have been training almost my entire life for things like this. (hand to hand, weapons, marksmanship) Although, I have been carrying since I was around 17. Brooklyn was a scary place in the 80s. You may look down at me for breaking the law back then, but I can assure I may not be here now if I didn't. The coyotes scare me more than the thugs do!

  15. And that is the reason that nobody including the DEC will ever admit to how they ended up on the eastern end of Long Island first. Usually when you have an expanding population, they will gradually extend their range from where it originated. In this case they ended up about 100 miles east of Manhattan and had to travel through the most populated parts of Long Island where there is probably more food than you would ever think. Just the feral cat colonies alone would be enough to feed the yotes for quite some time. I still think they were placed there.

  19. If you take away nothing else from these conversation, remember these tips: coyotes are really scary; their presence on LI is part of a conspiracy; do not let the children out; or, the pets; and, never go out unarmed, especially if you are gutting a deer. The coyotes will take your deer from you.

  22. Masks of either kind are not very effective at protecting you from picking up the virus. The virus spreads by droplet. So, unless you're getting very close to an infected person who's coughing or sneezing in your face, the mask is useless. The bug is picked up mostly from touching an infected surface. That's why hand washing is taught as the best method of avoiding the virus. Masks are more effective in preventing an infected person from spreading the virus because the mask stops the spray from the cough or sneeze. In hospital settings like where I work, anyone who has potentially been exposed to an infected person is asked to wear a mask for three days to prevent possibly spreading the bug during the incubation period.

  25. I went to a Drs. appointment this morning. Walking into and through, the medical arts building, I saw no less than half a dozen people wearing surgical masks. Never saw that before. And as always, I made a point to use the available hand sanitizer, after touching anything. Even the elevator buttons. I've done this for years though. Too many sick people in medical buildings!....Ha!

  26. You need be very concerned. At this point an attack is not if, but when. I would stay armed at all times when in the wilderness of long island. Pistol is a must. Maybe staying with a group walking to and from stands in a outward facing circle so all angles are covered. Self preservation is first. All else comes second.

  27. It was basically a wash for me....I had $80 invested and won $75.... I fried up a batch of crappy filets to nibble on while washing them down with Genny Light, and thoroughly enjoyed watching a good ball game all by myself... I invited Miranda Lambert and Jennifer Lopez over to watch the game with me, but I guess they both had prior commitments...

  33. Honestly, I've been going about my business like I normally do. I find it funny though every one if freaking out and wearing those facemasks. Those facemask don't protect you at all. The micros are too small and passes right through it. The facemask are really designed for those who already have a cold/flu and so when they cough/sneeze, it doesn't go that far. Though there is the running joke that being an Asian I can use it to my advantage. Whenever there's a long line, I just need to fake a cough and everyone will clear out of my way.

  34. No one knows our land, or our situation better than we do. We'll continue doing what needs to be done, twenty four seven, three sixty five. Every chance we get. Without a hint of guilt or remorse. That said, I do respect the coyote for what it is. And if their numbers were not so overwhelming here, I could even live in peace with them. But that is not the case here. So we try to control the numbers any way we can. Like some have stated in this thread, I feel there should be no closed season on them.

  39. Open Trapping areas for them seem to be expanding in NY. Still a free permitted activity though that requires pelt sealing. I just got done watching some trapping DVD's about them and martens. I've got a few on our hunting lease and was going to try for one this past season while up there hunting but I got the permit too late. I will say that it was an odd year for the number of grey squirrels. I should say lack of grey squirrels. There were entire day sits where i didn't see a single grey and they are normally like rats around there.

  41. Every year on here for the last few I’ve noticed members asking what’s this in trail cam pics or I saw my first fisher. They were found in northern N.Y. but infrequent most other places. Sort of like coyotes many years ago with none ever seen and now their everywhere. They’ll rip a gobbler right of its roost tree in the dark. I’m curious to porcupine populations around too as heard that’s a fishers favorite food

  42. Either way, I believe they had help getting here. And I also believe with the amount of small game, rodents, roadkill, and feral/stray cats, live deer are probably only a very small part of their diet If it was animal activists, then they truly are as stupid as they look. I wonder why when DEC acknowledged them in a letter written to the farmer who submitted pics a few years back, they said not to shoot them? They have no problem bringing in the USDA snipers to shoot the deer, but not the coyotes. They want them here.

  43. I have been around long enough to have seen this whole Coyote story evolve, from what was a Chupacabra like myth to what we have today. When I was a kid they were called Coydogs and they were as rare as Hen's teeth, many believed they did not exist and even the DEC did not acknowledge them. As their population grew they started getting shot by hunters and caught in traps proving their existence. Back in the late seventies I worked for a good friend of mine in his sporting goods store "Johns' Sporting Goods" in Rome NY. John was also one of the biggest raw fur buyers in NY and we had trappers and hunters from all over NY and neighboring states come in to sell their catches. The fur trade was a great barometer to gauge the Coyote's population growth from just a few pelts coming in to the hundreds in later years as populations exploded. Anyone who does not believe their impact has not been significant has their heads up their ass. As someone who has always been an enthusiastic small game hunter I have seen a big drop in several species populations. Cottontail Rabbits have just about vanished from my neck of the woods, it is a rare event to see one these days. When I was a kid they were all over the place, you could not drive down a country road a mile without seeing one dead from being run over by a vehicle. Same with Woodchucks, when I was a young fellow there with so many, one could not look over a large hayfield and not see plenty of Woodchucks standing on the hind legs looking for danger. The same fields today you will not see even one. Some will say farming practices are the cause of these declines and while I agree that is part of the blame it is not all of it. I attended a NY state Houndsman banquet and we had a state biologist expert in the Eastern Coyote as a guest speaker. He and his team examined the contents of Coyote's stomachs and during the warm months almost every single one contained woodchucks and his exact words were "if anyone has wondered where all the woodchucks have disappeared to there you have it". Master Wolfer Gary Strader feels that Rabbits are also one of their favorite foods. He says if you want to hunt or trap Coyotes find a good Rabbit population and you will find Coyotes. Being opportunists Coyotes will eat just about anything they can catch or find, Turkeys, Grouse, Pheasant and their eggs are on the menu all of these gamebirds populations are declining recently. They will kill Foxes, Possums and Coons which may be taken on occasion but I have a hard time believing they kill Fox or Coon with any regularity. Having hunted both Fox and Coon for over fifty years with some pretty fair dogs it is a rare thing to catch a Coon on the ground and if you do catch a big one they can hold their own in a fight. Catching Fox outside their den pretty hard to do in my opinion, I think they just move out of the territory when they are Coyotes around. And of course it is no secret that new born fawns and deer taken during the winter are very common. They will also eat cats and small dogs if they can get the opportunity to grab one. I know of several Hare hunter whose Beagles just vanished while running a Hare and like Gary Strader points out where the are Rabbits you will find Coyotes and it is probable those Beagle got picked off. I don't think anything should be completely exterminated but animals like Wolves and Coyotes belong in wild places and let them thrive there, once they get to have large populations around people the problems start showing up and that is when the gloves come off.
